Get Woke Go Broke – Big Rig Edition

The CEO of one of the country’s largest trucking companies made a big splash just over a year ago, when he declared the trucking industry racist, bigoted, and in need of enlightenment. And shocker, he was just the guy to enlighten us.

Barely a year later the company is in chaos. It’s losing money, laying off employees, and spreading its layoffs out such that the mass dismissal of its employees doesn’t violate federal employee-notification requirements.

We’ll take a look at the recent problems, but first let’s take a visit back to summer of 2021, when US Xpress CEO Eric Fuller accused his industry and his employees of being bigots, sexists, homophobes, and racists.

Trucking industry must support diversity and inclusion efforts – Eric Fuller, CEO of US Xpress [Freightwaves – 6/20/2021]

In recent months, I’ve become increasingly enlightened that the existing divisive rhetoric around diversity and inclusion within the trucking industry could significantly impact the growth and transformation of U.S. Xpress and our entire industry.

I’m calling on trucking and logistics business leaders large and small to begin taking steps to create a culture more accepting of others from different races, ethnicities, genders and sexual orientation.

This change won’t be easy and will take uncomfortable conversations and challenging opinions of the past. We should face the fact that our industry is behind others and needs to play catch-up.

Mr. Fuller offers contrition for being born a straight, white male, of course. But as a white savior, he is still not above using racist terms such as “Latinx,” a word that is well-documented as being a culturally offensive slur favored by affluent whites.

As a straight, white male, what I see as positive characteristics for opportunity within our industry is different than what a gay, Black or female person may see — or someone of Asian descent, someone who is trans or Latinx.

Unsurprisingly, this privileged white man who inherited his executive position from his daddy, accused truck drivers of being toxic people with white privilege.

Start talking to team members from minority communities within your organization and listen to them. Ask them to tell you how they view the openness and inclusion within our industry. Put yourself in their shoes. Think about the advantages that you have and how different their experiences are than yours.

CEO Fuller really, REALLY likes slandering his employees and his industry as being racist, doesn’t he?

In the previous year, I’ve interviewed multiple, highly skilled candidates for roles at U.S. Xpress. While each candidate has his or her own story, overwhelmingly I heard them talk about the lack of acceptance of diversity and perceived lack of opportunity within our industry.

While I admit that U.S. Xpress has a long way to go in developing a more inclusive culture…

Mr. Fuller made it very clear that the focus of his leadership had nothing to do with shipping goods, or making a profit, but instead on things such as creating “a safe space for open dialogue about important issues that impact women, the LGBTQ+ community…”

You’ll never guess what happened next.

Actually, you could predict exactly what happened next - the company started circling the drain. It had a massive financial loss in the first quarter of 2022 and then laid off about 5% of its workforce.

U.S. Xpress Lays Off 5% of Workforce After $8.9 MILLION Loss [5/13/2022]

One of the largest trucking companies in America dismissed a significant portion of its workforce this week.

Following a loss of more than $8.9 million in the first quarter of 2022, U.S. Xpress has laid off five percent of its employees.

Did that cure US Xpress’ woes? No, it did not. Another awful quarter just led to another massive round of layoffs.

Truckload carrier U.S. Xpress announces 2nd round of corporate layoffs; Company has cut roughly 10% of its corporate workforce [Freightwaves – 8/23/2022]

Since May, the trucking giant has cut about 10% of its corporate workforce, around 140 office jobs.

In May, the truckload carrier laid off 5% of its corporate workforce, amounting to around 70 of its 1,400 office employees at the time.

The 140 employees that were dismissed were not given 60-days notice as required by the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (“WARN Act”, which regulates how large companies engaging in mass layoffs must notify its employees of the impending job terminations.

While the WARN Act does make certain exceptions when layoffs occur due to unforeseeable business circumstances such as natural disasters, I’m not sure a CEO going woke qualifies as an unforeseeable natural disaster. US Express states that it did not violate federal law because no individual layoff event triggered compliance with the WARN Act – there were two separate layoff events separated by a few months. You would think, however, that a compassionate, enlightened leftist like Eric Fuller would have the decency to dismiss his employees in a way that comports with the spirit of federal mass-layoff laws.

In fairness to CEO Fuller, it may not be the wokeness that actually destroyed his business. Although the collapse of the company commenced shortly after he became a woke evangelist, he likely knew how badly he had mismanaged the company, and how bad things were about to get.

Struggling companies often embrace wokeness to receive critical acclaim that shields them from criticism as their business crashes. Megan Rapinoe was hired as a spokesperson for struggling companies Subway and Victoria’s Secret for that very reason.

As demonstrated by Eric Fuller of US Xpress, wokeness is the last refuge of C-Suite scoundrels. Maybe he can hire Megan Rapinoe to be his spokesperson.

7 I always wonder in such stories of "corporate layoffs", just how many of those laid off are those who actually do the work the company is selling, and how many are those "in corporate", i.e., useless pencil pushers.

I don't know about three letter agencies, but if you work in some industries, nearly all leadership is female, and they feel the need to tell you their pronouns, even though when discussing new hires, they almost always use the word "she" when talking about potential, theoretical candidates.

I have seen the line-ups for promotion and assignment boards, and they now include DIE representatives, by title: "Female representative", "Minority Representative", etc. Nothing about the reps having any qualification for their selection decisions. And I have seen the questions for job assignment consideration: 1 in 5 relates to the work; the remaining 4 are DIE topic-related.

Sounds like their workforce can be reduced by 4/5. Especially since they are likely paid with tax dollars.

One of the neighbors is a youngish buy in banking (major US bank firm). He described the surreal zoom/conference call for new hires/intros of new staff that happened in early 2021 (after the racist-totalitarian street festival of 2020). These calls are routine and periodic.

He said this time, in start weird contrast to all previous such events, the new people being introduced (guess if there were any white males!) had Zero substantive introduction. That is, whereas normally people are introduced by their background, expertise, and therefore how they can contribute to company operations/team organizations, this time, bupkis. Not a word about relevant capacity or experience. He said it was bizarre and creepy.

168 Saw a TV news report this a.m. with an explanatory chyron reading, “Trump uses campaign speech to praise Chinese leader Xi Jinping.”

PDT basically said in the three-minute clip that foreign leaders [Xi and Putin] aren’t dementia-ridden eff-ups but are at the top of their game, using a Hollywood casting analogy.

Ironically enough it included PDT saying, “A lot of times I’ll say ‘somebody’s smart’ and the Fake News goes, ‘He called President Xi smart! He rules with an iron fist 1.5 billion people’. Yeah, I’d say he’s smart….”

BTW, PDT’s ‘1.5 billion’ sounded a bit like ‘million’ but re-listening to it multiple times I think it was just his speech mannerisms like saying ‘Chyna!’ and he wasn't pulling a Biden.

The 52-year-old, who is also the company’s executive vice president, lept to his death as the company announced last week they were instituting mass layoffs and closing 150 stores. According to the Daily Mail, Arnal was being sued for ‘allegedly inflating the Bed Bath & Beyond’s stock price in a ‘pump and dump’ scheme.’”

More than 55 percent of children ages 6 months to 2 years of age had a systemic reaction, which is a response beyond the injection site, in response to their first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, the CDC said on Sept. 1, and almost 60 percent had a reaction to the second dose of the Moderna vaccine.

While the most common systemic reactions were fatigue, fever, irritability, and crying, parents of more than 6 percent of the children in the study that was referenced said their child was unable to perform normal activities after the second dose of either the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine.

It CAN make sense in limited markets.... like for my house where it will be 113 this week... and been over 100 most of the last month. 321 I think that the turning point was 9/11. The Intelligence Community steeled itself for the mass firings and resignations that would surely follow after the biggest intelligence failure in American history, and then no one lost their job.

Convinced them that they were bulletproof.

Thanks, W.

Not only that, they ended up with more power after 9-11, thanks to the Patriot Act.

324 Shutting down our McDonalds was stupid move, Western pigdogs. We take control of Russia McDonalds, make better by using real beef. Fresh lettuce and onion, not stored overnight in jungle. People love me now for giving them good burger.

We keep fries the way they are, though. McDonalds fries are good...so long as fresh.

Heh. My arms, especially the "exposed" left, have scars up and down, looks like I've been cutting myself.

Just the friendly nips by shark teeth and flesh wounds by powerful digging toenails from the amazing Daisy the Malinois. It's only flesh and blood.

And who can be mad? She's lying nearby with a squeeky toy, with which she has become quite the virtuoso.

328 Shutting down our McDonalds was stupid move, Western pigdogs.

Yeah, the Russian McDonalds franchisees just reopened the stores under a different name. Curiously, after making McDonald's burgers for 35 years, they knew how to do it without help from the home office.

339 You know, you can pay people severance in lieu of notification. You’re welcome all those CEOs who hired HR teams who are more interested in fluff than the actual role of HR- which is to support the business, not employees. Shocker, I know.

Also, I would have had advise on the timing of the two events that probably would have been helpful, but go on. Invest in the DEI gurus v. someone like me. It works out brilliantly. Eye rolling needed here.

341 That first paragraph makes me think of a concept Dr. Peterson has been trying to get across to people for years: the only way to make the world a better place is by making yourself a better person.

But that's hard, and leftist dimwits always want the easy option, even if it doesn't work.

342 Spent four and a half days on the road to Houston from Michigan, and back. Endless semis with ads for drivers. Appears they can't haul as many loads as are available due to a lack of drivers.
Isn't this a seller's market for trucking companies?

343 I know there are three newer threads, but just for the record:

The woman who rented my spare room for 10 years and now lives next door, whose cats I just visited (they lived here too), has a job checking truckloads in and out at a frozen-food storage warehouse in the Shenandoah Valley. I just confirmed with her what I remembered her saying before: that the long-haul truckers who come to her warehouse are mostly immigrants who speak 20+ different languages between them.

She had mentioned thinking of using Google Translate on their signs and asking truckers to check the results for accuracy, so they could put up 'Bathroom this way' and 'Park on that side' signs that everyone could read. She didn't because (a) lazy, (b) too many languages to fit on the wall, and (c) now they all have translator apps on their phones which allow them to communicate reliably with even the redneck-talkin'est employees.

Anyway, she just confirmed that languages include Spanish (duh!), lots of Russians, other Eastern European languages, several South Asian languages (lotsa Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims), plus African immigrants and old-fashioned English-only African Americans. So: story's bullshit.

344 I am a driver for US XpressMusic, have been with the company for about 14 years. Have over 2 million safe miles. Have not seen anything. Have met and spoke with both Eric and his dad at company award ceremonies. Have seen nothing excessively "woke" in this company...from initial orientation to continuing training, it's all been standard "equal opportunity" stuff seen in just about every workplace. If you have a problem, talk to your supervisor. If not resolved, talk to HR. Open door policy to all levels of management. They constantly seek input from drivers.

346 The "female driver" stereotype is always good for a laugh, but I have a good (female) friend who has been driving big rigs (running doubles now) for more than 10 years and a million accident-free miles.
And, in contrast with the cigar-chomping diesel-dyke stereotype, she's 5'4", blonde, and gorgeous. Married, too.
