Top Story

  • Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince, Wednesday:

Some argue that we should terminate these services to content we find reprehensible so that others can launch attacks to knock it offline. That is the equivalent argument in the physical world that the fire department shouldn't respond to fires in the homes of people who do not possess sufficient moral character. Both in the physical world and online, that is a dangerous precedent, and one that is over the long term most likely to disproportionately harm vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Today, more than 20 percent of the web uses Cloudflare's security services. When considering our policies we need to be mindful of the impact we have and precedent we set for the Internet as a whole. Terminating security services for content that our team personally feels is disgusting and immoral would be the popular choice. But, in the long term, such choices make it more difficult to protect content that supports oppressed and marginalized voices against attacks.

    Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince today:
    Yeah, forget all that.

Tech Video of the Day

This gets pretty technical, but it covers the semiconductor industry's plans out to 2036 - when they expect to be at something called the 2A node - 0.2 nanometres. TSMC is just starting production on its 3nm node right now.

That's smaller than the diameter of an atom, but as the presenter notes a couple of times, these numbers are marketing, not measuring any physical reality.

Disclaimer: There's a bear in there. And a chair as well. There are people with games. Nope, the bear's eaten them.

Yes, I'm going to need to take a closer look at this. It's very cool tech.

4 >>>"That is the equivalent argument in the physical world that the fire department shouldn't respond to fires in the homes of people who do not possess sufficient moral character."

"Argument." Eh. "Directive," maybe?

Combine that with CNN's Leana Wen's opinion/proposal that the unvaccinated should not be allowed to leave their homes, and, well, presto.

They don't seem to like a certain 'trans activist' very much and have 'swatted' him or her or they or whatever in the past. Funny, MTG has been swatted something like four times by a 'trans activist' lately.

I'm guessing there might just be a connection.

22 It's all bullshit. You'll note that as soon as Cloudflare blocked KF, within minutes there were news media pieces ready to go. It was a coordinated hit job.

What is KF, you ask? It's basically a forum board, where people make fun of other people and call them names. That's pretty much it. The flavour de jour of making fun was Keffels and it didn't like it, so here we are. I use KF to read about Virtual Youtubers. Many people read KF to follow the Chris-chan saga (if you don't know who that is, I'd advise NOT going down that rabbit hole without a number of drinks in you.).

I've never seen any illegal content on there at all, and anything approaching threats or doxing gets immediately bashed by the mods. It took Facebook over 20 fucking minutes to strike the Christchurch manifesto, and they have 27/7 moderation support.

Frankly, Cloudflare is fucking useless anyway, it doesn't really help much with DDoS attacks...

Posted by: cheshirecat at September 04, 2022 05:42 AM (TwA+r)

23 In any case, KF had mirror backups ready to go, so it's still up, just without Cloudflare.

If you want the whole story, go find Nick Rekieta's recent video with Josh about it, "The Null Position".

Yes, ditch the "cloud" and store your data locally. I don't backup anything to the "cloud". Portable hard drives are cheap. Sure, it's convenient...until it pulls a Cloudflare on you.

And yes, I'm campaigning to make "Cloudflaring" a verb.

Stirling the Evil Black Kitten is ensconced next to me, purring steadily. Time to give him breakfast. I planned to work out, but I dunno . . . it's so humid and hot out there . . . and I've got a lot to do today. Stirling goes to board at Miss Linda's, we drive up to pick up the new Siberian kitten -- a girl I've tentatively named "Dagny" -- and she and I will begin to learn about each other.

31 Keffals is a tranny that grooms and brainwashes children into sterilizing themselves, including cooking up drugs to that purpose in Keffals' bathtub and mailing them to said kids without said kids' parents' knowledge or permission.

Kiwifarms users express opinions on this matter.

THOU SHALT NOT EXPRESS DISAPPROVING OPINIONS OF YE TRANNY, sayeth the Cloudlfare.

Here's an opinion: trannies are a clear and present danger to children and moral society, and should be locked up. Those engaging in actions to sterilize other people's childrens should undergo summary trials to verify the facts and then be shot dead.

Here's another opinion: Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince and his upper-level management should be put on trial for attempted usurpation of the powers delegated to the government of the United States. It is not Cloudflare's prerogative to determine what is or is not allowable speech, but Cloudlflare has secured a market position where it in fact has exactly that sort of power over much of what was once the public discussion space.

(Same goes for Google, Facebook, and Twitter; and while we're at it anti-trust law should be enforced against Amazon.)

34 Hondo w/ John Wayne is on Grit tonight at 7 Central. I've seen it plenty of times, but there is still something to enjoy every time. I particularly love the scene in the colonel's tent where Sam the dog growls at Leo Gordon, Gordon is ready to kill the dog, Hondo threatens him and he leaves; and then Hondo aims a mock kick at Sam. August Ames was a female porn star who was harassed by 'gay activists' to the point she committed suicide. Her crime? Refusing to do a scene with a bisexual/homosexual male. Her body her choice, right?

These trans and gay 'activists' deserve every ounce of a shit sandwich they get - within reason. I'm glad I don't have to decide what is reasonable and what isn't.

42 This from the IndieWire article is funny:

The audience score later rose to 50 percent. Review bombing is birthed after a group collaborates to upload negative reviews for its “perceived cultural or political issues rather than its actual quality,” as THR defined the term.

The whole reason Amazon made "LOTR Rings of Power" was according-
to their own advertising, esp that one filled with idiots babbling about an LOTR "that looks like ME!!!!!! -
was directly because of "cultural and political reasons". No other reason or motive given at all.
So, a political and/or cultural critique is perfectly fine,
according to their Amazon's own stated standards that i9s how they hoped it would be judged."

"Lame-ass," said Bilbo puffing on his pipe, "Quite lame-ass, indeed!" -

45 @44 Well, if woke people want to claim, "What does it matter if the Elves are portrayed by People of Color?!", let's see how they react to "MLK", starring Keanu Reaves in the titular role.

----

MLK needs to be black for historical reasons, since the 60s civil rights movement was about obtaining certain rights for blacks specifically. It's just like Othello needs to be different in some way from the rest of the cast. A remake of Shaka Zulu with a white lead, on the other hand...

Posted by: junior at September 04, 2022 11:07 AM (PTw5h)

46 Imagine a world that is 100% non racist. Where at one point in time or another there were charcoal black people and the range went to paper white people.

After 1 generation, 50% of the next generation would be only about 25% charcoal black and 25% paper white.
After another generation the following generation would be 6.25% charcoal black and paper white. After 10 generations, about 180 years, every single human would be nearly identical in color that would be somewhere between charcoal black and paper white.

What this says, is that all these places where they try to show inclusion, what they are really showing is racism is rampant, as the people of different colors do not mate regularly and dilute their colors.

Our government overlords might disagree. Cloudflare is, or at least used to be, really great for blocking large portions of the internet from Tor users worried that their government overlords are building a file on them.

Google is a big fan of that too, though a quick test tells me they've backed off a bit and you can at least do a web search without getting LOLGFed by their servers.

51 Another good thing in regards to the Amazon unionization story: those employees get to learn the hard way that unions (now) do nothing but price the labor they “represent” out of the labor market. Enter layoffs. I’m not going to shill for Amazon - true to form, a company Americans liked until the moment it became a success, at which point Americans, hypocrites that they are, drew the long knives for them - but I’m not much for unions either.
