A Hero Bursts Forth From the Sun

J.J. McQuade is the hero the lawless West needs in its most desperate of hours.

He is the selfless, tireless, and skilled Texas Ranger who operates only based on once code: that which is right. He protects the innocent, putting his life on the line to bring violent criminals to justice, cutting through the murky morality brought on by corruption and arms trafficking in the border town of El Paso. He sacrifices all that is his in pursuit of peace and freedom.

He is the greatest lawman of his generation, one who runs red lights because he's slightly late to a ceremony for an old friend after having single-handedly taken out an entire band of horse thieves after they took half a dozen state troopers hostage. He is the hero we need.

The Strength of Images

The director of Lone Wolf McQuade, Steve Carver, is one of the great visual artists of our time. His command of images and meaning is unparalleled. He uses his camera like a neo-classical artist composing images, but his subject is the epitome of manhood: Chuck Norris. Take the scene where Norris's McQuade, the lone wolf who is so dedicated to peace and goodness that he has no time to even clean his own house, finds the widow of the criminal partner of David Carradine's Rawley Wilkes. Lola (Barbara Carrera) is cleaning McQuade's house without his permission. She even throws away his beer! (The Freudian implications are obvious here.)

The two get into a physical confrontation that leads them to wrestling outside in the mud, made by a water hose. Knowing that we are in a piece of art, we can easily see what's going on here. It's not a random event just to make things look interesting, it's a penetrative look at the heart of the budding relationship. He is like the dirt. She is like the water. Combined, they make mud. It's enough to make one cry.

Finding Meaning in the Smallest of Details

There is a character in the film, an ATF agent named Burnside. The thing about Burnside is that he does not actually have sideburns.

What to make of this?

There's obvious deep meaning to it, and we just have to approach it from an ironic context. The ATF agent is never seen as anything other than a boob, someone more in place in an office than in the rugged terrain of South Texas that McQuade navigates with such ease and poise. Burnside is a detriment in the effort to track down Rawley Wilkes, his base of operations being deep in the wilds of the Texas countryside. Even the FBI Agent Marcus Jackson is willing to help McQuade by flying him around to look for any potential signs, but Burnside just complains.

The first sight of him without his side burns should have been the clue that he would not be a worthy contributor to the efforts. He could not live up to his name, named after Ambrose Burnside who was defeated at both Fredericksburg and Petersburg, he doesn't even have the necessary sideburns to fulfil the name in the basest of senses. This is the level of cinematic intelligence on display in Lone Wolf McQuade.

Lesser Films

There's a scene where Steve Carver looks back in film history and decides that he can do it all better. In Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Part II, Michael Corleone is attacked in his bedroom by machine gun fire from outside. Carver repeats this scene with the hero McQuade to much more powerful effect.

Essentially it's the same, but it's targeting the great hero Lone Wolf McQuade. It makes Coppola look like an amateur.

In addition, McQuade is given motivation in the film's final moments to really hate the bad guy when his pet wolf dies. How bad ass is that? He has a pet wolf! That's so much more badass than John Wick's puppy. J.J. McQuade > John Wick.

Coming Back to Reality

Okay, that was a bit over the top, no? Got a bit out of control?

Yes, I've overplayed the artistic success and import of this Chuck Norris movie, but I do enjoy it. It's a fun neo-western obviously inspired in equal parts by the Dollars Trilogy directed by Sergio Leone (the music by Francesco de Masi is the deadest giveaway) and the other Clint Eastwood star-vehicle Dirty Harry. In fact, the script for Lone Wolf McQuade was written for Eastwood, but he passed on the project which led to the director, Steve Carver, reaching out to the star of his previous film, An Eye for an Eye, Chuck Norris who did take the role despite his concerns that drinking beer on screen would ruin his image as a family-friendly action star.

Why did I go to these lengths? Well, the first was the joke itself. Inspired by our dear commenter Duke Lowell who has kept it up as a meme without any feedback for months, I decided to just do it without any fanfare. I thought it would amuse him. I hope it has.

The second reason was Billy Wilder: Dancing on the Edge by Joseph McBride. McBride has been writing about movies for decades, including having a day on set of The FrontPage. Wilder's writing partner I.A.L. Diamond said (I left the book somewhere I can't get to, so I have to paraphrase): "You people read things into these movies that are simply not there."

McBride has not only the gal to print this in his book, he even goes on to say that Diamond is wrong and that his own over-indulgent readings of Wilder's work is actually valid. He even quotes D.H. Lawrence's "Never trust the artist. Trust the tale. The proper function of a critic is to save the tale from the artist who created it." The problem that McBride has is that he not only doesn't trust the artist, he doesn't trust the tale either. (He also doesn't quote the first two lines of the Lawrence quote.) He goes so far overboard to overexplain his own thematic obsessions, transplanting them into Wilder's work so completely when there might have been a germ of an idea to begin with, that it becomes about McBride's own ideas rather than Wilder's. What starts as an interesting look at the life of a nomad journalist and screenwriter who goes from Vienna to Berlin to France and finally to Hollywood becomes an obsessive bit of nostalgia for Weimar Germany of all things.

He even says that Freud's assertion that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar is wrong. He says that the cigar is always something else. If you are there saying that Freud wasn't obsessed enough with symbolism, you've fallen down a rabbit hole you will never climb out of.

A while back, I wrote about reading too much into movies, and Billy Wilder: Dancing on the Edge is a book form of that.

What Lawrence said was, "let the art speak for itself." What McBride wants us to do is read him to figure out what the art says. I don't need a translator. You shouldn't either. I've read good, illuminating books about filmmakers and their work such as Steven Prince's A Dream of Resistance: The Cinema of Kobayashi Masaki. McBride is not at that level, despite the fact that this was something like his tenth published book on film.

In Conclusion

Alright, I hope I combined something amusing with a small diatribe about something no one cared about.

It's conventional and operates in a fairly tight box, but Milland helps to elevate it and Lang's expert handle of the physical production keeps things interesting visually. I watched Samaritan on prime, same feeling, it is not a academy award winner and not meant to be, stars Sylvester Stallone. It is suppose to be a comic in real life and it meets that, good enough to feel you didn't waste 90 minutes of your life.

Robinson creates two such very different characters, and both so different from the gangster persona he was always associated with. (He was fortunate that he didn't get typecast. Maybe because he was just so good.)

Pompo The Cinephile.

An anime about a dude hired to direct a movie for a B-movie writer/producer named Pompo. It's basically a love letter to film and creativity. The dude makes a trailer. Then a film. Then he's got to edit the film. It's cute, amusing, well animated and looks freakin' GORGEOUS on Blu-ray.

Also, it's only 90 minutes.

Anyway, check it out. It's fun. I liked it a lot. I liked it enough to buy the manga. Check it out.

66 I liked 'Lone Wolf McQuade' quite a bit. Fun movie. Damn entertaining. I mean, it's not a brilliant piece of theatric art like 'Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man' but I liked it.

I haven't seen 'Extreme Prejudice' with Nick Nolte and Powers Boothe in years. I'm going to have to dig that up and watch it again. I seem to recall it was pretty damn good. Also, a young Maria Conchita Alonso!

the movie was spot on and Newman was great int he role and I'm not much of a fan of his

It's so easy for film critics and scholars to go off the deep end and just look for symbolism everywhere to find the "secret formula" of one thing or another. I found a paper that argued that Steven Spielberg's The Lost World was all about the Holocaust.

I mean...I suppose there are shades of it in the rounding up of dinos, but it's pretty obvious that even if Spielberg thought of it while crafting the film, it was not any kind of driving force to the story. So, maybe it's there, but it definitely doesn't say anything about the story. It might say something about Spielberg having a base set of experiences that he builds stories from, but it's not exactly important to figuring out The Lost World itself.

Though it's a Roger Corman cheapo, it's one of his better movies. And though I'm not a Ray Milland fan, I'd say he does excellent work here.

I own it. I think I saw it in theaters. It was one of those movies I got really excited about when it was coming out and couldn't get anyone else to care. It's really pretty and surprisingly moving (though Tarsem hasn't come close to matching it since).

The Blu-ray has become one of the most valuable in my collection. It went out of print years ago.

151 M is a great example of movies with symbolism that works but is unnecessary for the understanding or even enjoyment of the film.

Essentially, it's possible to read the child murderer as representing Nazism. It was a disease that was taking the children of the German people. If you were to kill the man spreading the Nazism, it doesn't bring back the children for they are completely lost.

You can also see this sort of thing in the Dr. Mabuse films Lang made (all three of them). Mabuse is first the failings of Weimar, then the rise of Nazism, then the unshakable after effects of Nazism on Western Germany. It adds something to be able to see it, but the films still work as thrillers even without picking that up.

Criterion's been playing "Arabesque", which is meant to be one of those Hitchcockesque comedy thrillers in the same way as "Charade".

Only instead of Cary Grant. It's got Gregory Peck playing opposite Sophia Loren. And man, do you miss the light comedic touch that Grant could bring to this movie.

Gregory Peck does his best to imitate Grant only it's Ulysses S Grant.

"Arabesque" is still worth a watch. It's not awful, it's good. But, with Cary Grant it might've reached the heights of another "Charade".

It's a funny and touching film.

208 I saw a minor miracle the other night. A "woke" thriller that was actually a good movie.

"I Came By" is a nasty little thriller currently streaming on Netflix. The acting and directing are very well done. The script has some nice and genuinely shocking twists. And the tension ratchets up efficiently.

The problem is that this is one of those movies where "character/personality" is almost strictly generated by barfing out some woke/SJW talking point. However, the movie mechanics take care of this as the danger increases, and soon really isn't an annoyance at all.

Check it out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. I was.

I suspect that type of thinking lurks in the mind of all critics, whether they be art, movie, food, book, whatever. The critic always has to search for meaning because that is what his thought processes have been trained to do.

I really don't think deep thoughts about movies because movies are not in my wheelhouse. I watch movies for fun. There was about a ten year span when I became a world class expert on kids movies because I had a grandson I took to lunch and a movie twice a month. (Long story.) I enjoyed most of these movies, mostly because I avoided the ones that didn't appeal to me.

The point is: evidently McBride took himself way too seriously, bought into his own PR. Not good.

-I am in a convoy of cars with my employees from work.
-the guy in front of me stops short for some reason and I tap the back of his car.
-I lean out through the windshield and push the cars apart.
-We are stopped at a railroad crossing. There is a car with a guy in it, passed out.
-a train starts coming, very slowly. I call out but make no move to rescue him (neither does anyone else.)
-suddenly we are in a forest, still in cars, still at a railroad crossing with a guy passed out behind the wheel.

There are hits and misses with franchise novels (e.g. Star Trek, Star Wars, Dragonlance, etc.). On the whole, they are usually decent "fluff" novels, when you are just looking for something entertaining to pass the time, but not really concerned about serious, thought-provoking stories.

354 Don't know if others feel this way but I think a bit of humor, might be subtle, really adds to an action and adventure movie. The Phantom, The Shadow, The Rocketeer, and John Carter of Mars are some examples. It helps if the film is sort of camp to start with and the titles above qualify.

Absolutely. My mom and aunt were HUGE star trek fans. They went to a lot of early cons and mom would buy 'zines' and bring them home. As a kid, I got into Star Trek and I'd go through the 'Star Trek Bookshelf' in the basement. Lots of fan novels, but one time I ran across a couple of those slash zines. Horrified is not even the word. There were illustrations. Dear God, I can still see them. What have you done to Captain Kirk and Spock!?!

Cooper was low-key, but very effective. It startled me when I saw the movie version of Hemingway's For Whom the Bell Tolls. Just like the novel, it starts off at a high point, has a low stretch toward the middle (including an intermission!), and then rises sharply to the climax and finale. The director and screenwriter really captured the flow of the novel's events.

That's true about Illya. He was always getting into uncomfortable situations on the show as well. However, there are a few fanfic authors who actually tell good stories and don't do slash. They are readable, and some are actually very good.

As a kid, I got into Star Trek and I'd go through the 'Star Trek Bookshelf' in the basement. Lots of fan novels, but one time I ran across a couple of those slash zines. Horrified is not even the word. There were illustrations. Dear God, I can still see them. What have you done to Captain Kirk and Spock!?!

That was a good Twilight Zone episode.

Minnesota has a very well regarded morning radio program whose main host's superpower is doing fantastic interviews. One of the things I learned from listening to his program is that famous people who are known for doing one or two things really, really like to talk about the other things that they've done. No idea if that would work with The Shat but hey, may as well try, right?

I kind of wonder whether modern genre entertainment encourages fanfic? The actual shows are about on the level of average fanfic themselves.

The thing about slash, and this is partially my mom's theory is that it has to be masculine, dangerous, competent men to start with. The gay part is because the woman writer wants to fantasize about being with both characters at once (that's my Mom's bit.) The hurt/comfort thing that the Cap'n mentioned above is because they want a situation where their hero is hurt and/or incapacitated and they need to 'nurse' him.

Do shitty, poorly written, bitchy characters provoke that kind of fantasy? I doubt it.

I never got to meet Robert Vaughn, but one of the fans I knew from the old Channel D Yahoo group did. She told him she was fascinated by his lead role as the surgeon in The Mind of Mr. Soames, a quiet little SF film RV did in Britain in the early '70s. She said Vaughn lit up and was very pleased that she knew that film. He said it was one of his favorite jobs.

As of a few years ago, U.N.C.L.E. fandom was still strong with female writers. There were a few exceptions, such as yours truly. The accepted wisdom was that male writers wrote about action and adventure, female writers about emotional matters. A couple, like the renowned Cynthia Walker, told adventure stories with meaning. I did the same in my few ventures into the field.

504 Aetius: No, I don't think so. As I wrote earlier, hurt/comfort sort of tipped over into slash. People kept pushing the envelope. Mary Sue was still around, but was despised by most of us. You knew which publishers to avoid. And, frankly, yes, there were some lesbian writers and artists. OTOH, several snide comments were made about writers who typed with one hand while holding a copy of "The Joys of Gay Sex" in the other. We also knew who they were. Most of the people I ran with had a "live and let live" attitude. Was it a good story idea? Was it well executed? Those were the important things. If you didn't like slash, you didn't write, publish, or buy it. If you liked it, you wrote, published, and bought it.

Having said that, I remember a story, "Return To Treasure Island" by H.A. Callahan, who took RLS's characters, and wrote a sequel. he explained in a forward that RLS had left numerous Easter Eggs in the original story that pointed to an expected sequel.

Its nickname arose from the way early writers categorized their stories: "Kirk/Spock romance," etc. So it became known as "slash."

There's nothing wrong with a writer taking another's characters and having fun with them, as long as it's not for profit -- and, to me, if it fits the original format of the show or story series and doesn't insult the creator's intent. (I think slash does insult that.) It's good practice for beginning writers too. I suspect a lot of us began writing with stories about our favorites from TV or books. Roy Rogers for me, and Jeff and Lassie from that series.

574 I'll admit that a LOT of fan fiction I've read seems pretty amateurish -- in the writing, the plotting, the dialogue, the situations, or sometimes all of them. To discover a writer like Cynthia Walker ("CWW") who uses English properly and tells good stories with human emotions too is remarkable.

I'd like to think I do well at that too. But I can't be sure. The fanzine editors love my stuff, but it could be partly because they do not need to edit my work to get it up to publishable standards!

577 Wolfus: I started with Hoga Kuryakin, moved on to Spock, then moved to Han. A lot of my fellow writers followed the same path. The primary characters usually have a pretty firm background. You can find the occasional omission to work with. But the second character has the least amount of background. The prime example is Han Solo. The word "Corellian" is mentioned only once in original trilogy canon when Han brags about the Falcon out running big Corellian ships. Only in the novelization of ANH does Lucas say Han is Corellian. And that mention spawned many an argument. A very good friend and better writer than I ever was, sniffed that his home world was Corella, not some damn brand of tableware.

No, it isn't stealing. None of us make any money, or try to, from someone else's intellectual property. Nor do we pretend that the characters or background are our original work. Plus it is good writing practice for doing our own original stuff. Where's the harm?

Sure. But in the case of fan fiction, the original property remains with the creators. Some of the fan fic may cast disrepute on the original -- which is my view on slash fiction. But it doesn't deprive the creators of their work or their profits.

If the author, like Anne McCaffrey of the Pern series, refuses to allow fan fiction, that is his right, and someone who persists is offending the author. But we're simply playing in their created universe. It's actually flattering to the creator.

I think fanzine publishers charge barely enough to cover postage costs. In the days of print zines, anyway. I'm not sure what they do now.
