Gun Thread: End of August Edition!

August-2022- calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Thanks for behaving yourselves last Sunday! As I mentioned I was away but was able to peek in from time to time making sure the place wasn't on fire. I read the comments afterward and only a few notes had to be placed into permanent records. I will be on another secret mission when you read this, but should be able to join you all in the comment hijinks.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Featured Gun
This week our pal and aviation enthusiast RS sends in a great gun photo.

rs grumman 1 082822 scaled.jpg

Attached is a photo of the M2 50 "stinger" on a Grumman TBF Avenger. I snapped the pic earlier this month at the Oshkosh Airshow. Not the typical gun thread photo, but it's special to me. My dad was a WWII Naval Aviator with combat tours in the Aleutians. His last assignment at the end of the war was as a training officer for enlisted men assigned to Avengers flying TBM-3W models.

Very nice, RS! I'm jealous - I have always wanted to make a trip to Oshkosh. As a matter of fact I'm currently in Pensacola, Florida , the home of Naval Aviation, visiting my 92 year-old uncle who took me flying a lot when I was a wee Weasel Pup. For those of you who might not know, the single greatest museum on the planet of the Earth, the National Naval Aviation Museum is located here, and if you are ever within 5,000 miles of Pensacola you really owe yourself a visit!

Nurse R and IDPA
Finally! Finally you people are starting to listen to me!! Before we get to Nurse R's IDPA report, allow me to offer some thoughts.

As long as I have been writing the Gun Thread, I have tried to make it a resource and open forum for all shooters, not just those who shoot competitively. I absolutely did not want it to become Weasel's Long Range Competition Thread, but rather to offer something for both beginners and the old pros alike. To that end, I have included topics on competitive shooting but have tried my best not to make it the single focus of our weekly confab because I realize everyone has a different level of interest in the shooting sports. Some people want to simply plink and have fun and there is nothing wrong with that at all. Others become interested in improving their accuracy, speed and precision, and I have made no secret that training and practicing with an objective are the very best ways to achieve those goals.

Competition will make you a better shooter. Period. Nothing will focus your attention like having an audience and keeping score. Let me repeat that. Nothing will focus your attention like having an audience and keeping score.

Q: Weasel, what other things focus your attention as well as having an audience and keeping score?
A: Nothing. No. Thing.

You can have the greatest gear and all the skills in the world, but if you are lazy or sloppy and unfocused you will not perform well, or at the very least not up to your potential.

Many of you know I was a rifle team coach for many years. A big aspect of that job is recognizing talent and then helping those shooters develop and refine their skills over time. In the first 30 minutes or so of working with someone I can generally tell if they are serious or not. Many people want to get the results, but are fundamentally unserious and unwilling to put in the work and effort required to get there. I'm always happy to work with everyone, but frankly my expectations of their performance is typically low. There are many qualities I look for in an aspiring shooter, and many of these things have nothing at all to do with gear or trigger-pulling. These are, in no particular order; attention to detail, the ability to handle stress, listening, comprehension and follow-through, a good attitude, and the willingness to work and follow instruction to name a few.

Our pal RI Red is great example of someone who has become a very competent long range shooter. Here is the Gun Thread from a few weeks back in which he describes dipping a toe into the world of IDPA, or International Defensive Pistol Association matches. IDPA is a sanctioning organization for matches where shooters are faced with realistic real-world self-defense scenarios, and shoot for score. RI Red ask questions, listens, practices diligently, and applies what he has learned. He is a very good shooter as a result.

I have had the pleasure of shooting with our pal and delightful 'ette Nurse R on several occasions, and have recognized in her all of the necessary traits to be a very successful competitive shooter. I have gently encouraged her to pursue IDPA matches as a way to improve her skills and have a lot of fun in the process. Pushing someone to do this sort of thing is usually counter-productive, and I figured she'd get there sooner or later when she was ready. She's calm, cool and collected, and thinks her way trough problems, and finally with encouragement from others, took the plunge. Here is her report.

So, I showed up for new shooter orientation and Mark Andrew Edwards and LazyMessenger were there as chaperones. We were asked to introduce our pistols (not ourselves) and when they got to the guy wearing the Air Force hat and shirt he said "well, I was busy packing my range bag and forgot my pistol." Without skipping a beat , I said, "that's why you're Air Force." Yes, I had an Eagle, Globe and Anchor shirt on. There were more than a few chuckles.

The difference between shooting in a match vs standing and shooting at the range is profound. However, used together, I can see how one's shooting could improve exponentially.

First of all, have fun and be safe.

At the range, my focus has been on trigger control, keeping firearms always facing down range and loading/reloading my pistol. And I am so glad I have those disciplines hard wired in my brain! Standing and shooting allows you to develop the muscle memory in not just shooting, but what your actions are before you raise the pistol and after it discharges.

On the IDPA course, I was happy with the fact I did not fan the crowd, I did not have my finger on the trigger whilst scooting from section to section and I was able to load and reload without having to think while on the run. All those skills made my experience much smoother.

I did get a procedural for dropping a mag with live rounds on the course. I also shot one hostage. But he deserved it.

It was so good to know that my basics are pretty sound, and that comes from being slow and deliberate on the range when we are just standing and plinking.

During the IDPA match, I was able to focus on the situation, the maze of "walls" we had to maneuver through and the "hostages" we were supposed to avoid shooting. I was pretty slow, but hit the target (somewhere) on every shot. It was also helpful that I turned off my "super uber competitive, knock grandma down to win the race, face" and was slow and deliberate. And I even finished one scenario with ZERO deductions. That was pretty cool, 4 different targets, three shots each and four "hostages" to avoid. Under 20 seconds.

My next range trip will be even more interesting as I will be really focused on cementing all the good habits that helped me so much during the match. Speed will come.

I am so very glad I went. The guys (very few women) were very helpful and encouraging and complimentary. It's a great community of people and I will most likely be going again. Thank you weasel, CBD, MAE and LazyMessenger for encouraging me to go.

Congratulations, Nurse R!! Now for the post-match discussion and analysis.

My advice to Nurse R before going, was to move slowly and deliberately, to have fun and to not worry about scores (yet). Shooting under pressure, whether it is the ticking clock or having a bunch of onlookers, is bigly different than plinking cans off of a fence with your shooting buddies. There is pressure to perform well and myriad rules to the sport, and the first few times is nerve wracking for certain. How did Nurse do? Well, bigly excellent of course! Truth be told, I would have said the same thing even if she had performed poorly, because she had the guts to get outside her comfort zone and try something different. As for the analysis, who cares? She went out and did it and at this point that is all that matters.

I expect we will hear more going forward regarding Nurse R and IDPA shooting, and I also expect her skills will begin to advance very quickly from here. Again, match shooting requires considerable concentration and focus, something often missing from repetitive and static plinking and you cannot help becoming a better shooter as a result. Nurse R has all of the qualities needed to become an excellent competitive shooter and is well on her way to getting there. If she chooses to pursue it, and I hope she will, I am looking forward to watching her progress!

Range Reports
First up, our pal Schnorflepuppy shares a report on a date nite range trip.

Spousal unit (who is, sadly, not an 'ette ... I'm working on her) and I attended a quarterly function at our local Freedom Store called Date Night With A Bang. It combines dinner from a local BBQ joint with open shooting lanes, free targets, and, oh yeah, 50 rounds of full-auto fire in any of a number of weapons owned by the store.

spuppy 1 082822 9mm_target scaled.jpg

This is my first couple of magazines from my M&P Shield 2.0 at 7 yards. Still working on my trigger press and avoiding the "flinch". The taped-over holes from the first magazine were all over the place, but the open holes from the second magazine were a tighter grouping. (Except for that 1-point flyer at lower left - can't really explain it, but probably due to some latent bad habit that manifested itself.)

spuppy 2 082822 fullauto_target scaled.jpg

This would be the Thompson full-auto, either a Model 1928 or a M1928A1, with a 50-round drum magazine in .45ACP at 10 yards. It was easier to shoot than I thought it would be. The weight of the weapon balances out the recoil nicely, making it easier (not easy) to keep on target. I used the advice from one of the Weasel Acres video library to lean over the gun to keep it from climbing. I count 38 of the 50 rounds that hit the paper, including the one at top center that almost, but not quite, went high.

Next time, I'm going to wear a fedora, a suit, and a duster jacket so that the illusion of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre is complete.

Nicely done, S'puppy! Fun, huh? Thanks for sending this in for us all to appreciate!

Next up, our pal and competitive shooter Dr. Doghouse reports on competition and the 40-yard shot!

dd 1 082822 scaled.jpg

Shooting at 40 yards has seemed particularly relevant lately, so I'm sharing my run from a local USPSA match that featured that challenge. There was a single target at 40 yards, bracketed by a pair of no-shoots. The procedure was draw, take 4 shots, make a mandatory reload, then take 4 more shots. There was a Bianchi barricade on the side of the shooting area that you could brace against if you wanted. It was a fixed-time stage with a 13-second par. You can hear the second beep in the middle of, "if you are finished, unload and show clear," so it took me about 11 seconds. I had all 8 hits on the paper (4A-3C-1D in USPSA scoring, or 30 points out of a possible 40), and the only people who beat me were shooting rifles or open guns, all with optics. I suspect the higher-level shooters (I am, on a good day, nearly adequate) were rushing their shots, rather than being more deliberate with trigger control--having nearly a second-and-a-half per shot for static shooting is FOREVER compared to the typical USPSA pace. It's true that you can only aim so much; once you have equal height/equal light or a stable dot on the point of aim, more aiming won't improve your shot. However, a cleaner trigger press with proper grip balance WILL improve your shot, by making it more likely that you're still on target when it breaks. That's what I focused on to make the most of the relatively generous par time.

For the gear heads out there, I run a CZ Shadow 2 from Cajun Gun Works with their Pro package. It's a slicked-up version of Jeff Cooper's fave commie gat, the CZ-75. Cajun does good work, too, they're worth the wait! (Just a satisfied customer, I don't have a discount code.) The only tinkering I've done is switching the fiber from red to green, adding fatter grips, and putting back the factory trigger return spring. Yes, I shoot a standard-pressure "gamer" 9mm load (125 gr boolits @ ~1,070 FPS) that will undoubtedly get me kilt in da streetz.

Finally, I echo and endorse everyone here who has been talking about making longer distances a regular part of your handgun shooting (whatever "longer" means for you, whether it's 10 yards or 100). Shoot more to shoot gooder!

Kamping Korner - The EarthRoamer LTi

I had the pleasure of meeting Zack Renier, the Customer Experience Manager for EarthRomer in this video last weekend at the wedding I attended. As you will see, he is a solid guy who really knows the product, and he's a serious long-range shooter to boot! I think you will like the video, a recent episode of Jay Leno's Garage.

54 Days!
The countdown to the TXMoMe continues! That's right, boys and girls, the TXMoMe is a mere 54 days from today, and by now you should be rushing your MoMe attendance plans to completion. There are lots of big doin's in the works and your hosts Rancher Bob, Cow Horse Queen and Ben Had are ready to welcome YOU to the festivities! Have you signed up? Are you on the exclusive guest list, or are you one of the mentally defective people who always finds a reason to make it next year?

PRO TIP: Word has it there may be some, well let's just call them "exotic" weapons, available to shoot in Texas. I don't want to go into a bunch of specifics, but if you like shooting at a high cyclic rate, plan on bringing a box of brass case 9mm ball ammo (example) with you to Texas. Please, NO reloads!

Q: Weasel, what the heck is a "high cyclic rate"?
A: Well, it's faster than a low cyclic rate such as that found on semi-automatic weapons.

Q: Weasel, why do I want to do that?
A: Because it is mucho fun-o, and an opportunity that many of you might not have often.

As long as we're on the subject, if you aren't planning to bring a firearm and ammo, but plan on shooting, please pick up a box or two of ammo in the caliber you like and bring it to Texas. Each year we have lots and lots of guns, and even more shooters, and it's nice have the cost and effort needed to source the ammunition spread around a bit. We want to make the shooting available to as many as possible, and cover those who want to shoot but for whatever reason cannot bring ammo, so every little bit helps. Thank you!

Holy Shitballs, people. Have I not implored and cajoled you enough? Do you require additional imploring and cajoling? I challenge you to find a single person who has attended a TXMoMe and not found it to be a life altering experience. Life altering for the good even! So please quit screwing around and making up reasons not to commit and start planning on getting your ass to Texas in October!

You will see this material again, so for heaven's sake, so do yourself a favor and email Ben Had for details!

More on Ammo for Texas
Let's talk a little more about bringing ammunition to the TXMoMe. The options are buy it at home and ship it UPS, buy it at home and ship it in your airline checked baggage, or just buy it once you get to Texas.

Let's begin with the easiest, first. Texas is awash in shooting and outdoor stores, and you really shouldn't have any trouble using this option. There are a lot of sporting goods stores on the south side of Dallas and in the towns all the way down I-45 to Corscicana. A quick internet search should return several options, and you might want to identify a couple before you leave home. Next, there is a store in Corscicana, Brinson PowerSports, that has a generally reliable stock of major calibers, although ammo is not listed on their website. I'd suggest calling first and asking if they have what you're looking for. The physical address and phone number is:

Brinson PowerSports
1931 Martin Luther King Blvd.
Corsicana, TX 75110
903-229-4330

Honestly, sourcing ammo locally seems like the most logical choice to me, but for those of you with special needs, it's pretty easy to fly with ammunition in your checked baggage. Here I am speaking in very general terms and it is incumbent upon YOU to check in advance with your airline, confirm the requirements, and comply with them.

Southwest Airlines is a popular option into the Dallas area, and I have found them to be gun friendly as far as these things go. Here is what I found on the Southwest Airlines Special Baggage webpage:

Packing Ammunition
Small arms ammunition for personal use (provided it is properly packed) is permissible in checked baggage only.

The ammunition may be placed in the same container as the firearm and must be securely packed in cardboard (fiber), wood, or metal boxes, or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.

Ammunition Limits
When checking ammunition, Customers are limited to 11 pounds (ammunition plus container) per person. Gunpowder (black powder) and primers or percussion caps are not allowed in checked or carryon baggage.

Loose ammunition or loose loaded magazines and/or clips are not allowed. Paintballs must be packaged in a leak-proof container and will be subject to limited release.

So my read is that ammunition in its original cardboard container is all you need, and it does not have to be locked inside another container inside your bag as required for a firearm, and you are allowed up to 11 pounds carried in this fashion. Although the instructions are silent on declaring the ammunition to airline personnel, again as you must do when transporting a firearm, I think it's probably a good idea to do so. You may or may not be allowed to check your baggage curbside when traveling with ammunition, so be prepared for a little extra time at the counter. Again, this is my interpretation and as we all know I am mostly full of shit, so check for yourselves.

Every airline has a section like this on their website, usually found in the baggage section, and you may have to dig around a little to find it. I also recommend printing your specific airline's policy and bringing it with you on the trip, just in case you need to help the ticket agent understand how to do their job. I will say in all the years of flying all over the country to matches, I have never once had any problem with airline personnel and their rules and have always found them well informed and helpful.

Finally, if you are really a special needs shooter, our bestest buddy and pal and host RancherBob has offered to allow people to ship their ammunition to the ranch. I would recommend this only in very unique circumstances where very specific ammunition is required and neither of the other, simpler options will work. If this is you, then contact me for details. I have shipped ammunition via UPS in the past and it works, but there are strict packaging and labeling requirements and also necessitates you visit an actual UPS location rather than a retail shipping store. Also remember, you cannot ship ammunition via USPS.

Questions? Just ask!

Cigar of the Week
Our pal and Chief Gun Thread Cigar Correspondent rhomboid brings it with another excellent cigar review. Thanks rhomboid!

Bradley CT 2 082822 scaled.jpg

The Alec Bradley Connecticut, torpedo. The Connecticut leaf wrapper is from Ecuador, filler from Nicaragua and Honduras, the latter where the cigar is made. Won't waste electrons here - this is one of my favorite cigars so far, in about a year of pretty broad exploration. Definitely on the milder end of the spectrum, but described as medium by Cigar Aficionado (they give it a 90 rating), which I find accurate. The lighter body and overall experience one expects from a Connecticut wrapper, but lots of flavor, and some depth. Flavor hints of nuts, and sweet wood, voluminous smoke, very good construction (even burn line). Definitely one for all palates and strength preferences. Available for $6 and up online.

Speaking of which, Weasel and I thought it might be helpful to list some good online sources, as with the long-standing Gun Thread ammo source list below. So here are a few. Different vendors carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines, so it's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar. There are more sites but this is a good start.

Excellent as always, rhomboid! Thank you, and great idea on the list of vendors!!

By the way, it can make a world of difference who one shoots with.

Back when I was shooting IDPA on a regular basis, I found out I didn't fit in with the hard core shooters, which made me try to stick with a group of people who knew how to laugh rather than grumble after a run.

14 Here's a gun thing that happened today. I was strapping up (not ON. Not On. Okay?) to go out today and while I am pretty much always carrying the P365XL, I don't always carry an extra mag, which I had gone to the trouble of getting a mag holster for. So, anyway, since I don't don it every day I had to fiddle with it. And dropped the mag holster and all on the hardwood floor and I guess it hit just right to knock the endplate off and stuff launched everywhere. Bullets, spring, the follower, and, somewhere, in the deepest haunts of the wooliest dust bunnies, the end plate.

So that was fun.

Shot a rabbit on the back lawn from the bedroom in the nude yesterday morning. Gotta love 10/22s.
Have a meeting today with a Colonel about automating ranges. I'm not luddite but I will give him my opinion in my usual shy and retiring manner. Had an older gentleman and his lovely wife come and visit the spread yesterday and he explored the mancave and gub collection. Twas a nice day.

42 Not to spill all the range writeup or takeaway from swa's story as it was her new pistol that made the day - but, this was an off Sunday for the DMV MGC, so only the two of us later joined by Hrothgar. But, this is the second Sunday in a row that the range has been evacuated for a fire alarm. Lst Sunday it happened before we were on the lane. Today, we were there and they say leave the guns where they are and go.

Not sure what is going on there. Are they real? Is there some troublemaker making false alarms? Dunno. But does take way from the fun a bit.

47 Finally able to access my long arm storage area. One is an on again, off again project, quest really, to find and reattach a scope mount to a No. 4 Mk 1 Enfield. The receiver was already tapped with screw for it but I could never find the side mount that fit it until last year. It was a Parker Hale A29 (if you care about such things) but then you have to find the scope mount that goes on top of the A29. Supposedly it is a BA24 but after a while, I found one and bought it as an import from England along with Sportsmatch rings (these fit and resemble the original Parker Hale rings). Screw holes do not match so it looks like I am going to have to fire up the drill press and very carefully drill it out.

If you ever question why all those old catalogs etc. bring money, it is because they often have reference numbers and dimension of long vanished products if you are restoring one.

I'm going to probably have to plead some user error here. The 15 round mag apparently ships randomly configured for use with 365 or 365 XL - same mag, different baseplates. I have an XL, the mag shipped configured for 365 - and I had to reconfigure. I don't think I got it as firmly snapped as it was supposed to be.

60 Brief update on my problem with the Aero Precision upper that I asked about, oh, four weeks ago now. Almost 2 weeks after contacting their customer "service" department, I got an email that said "send pictures." So I sent pictures and then heard nothing else for another 2 weeks. Then I got another email with an RMA return label. Sent the part off and on Friday, 5 weeks from initial contact, got a third email which said, and I paraphrase "We received your RMA. We'll get to it when we get to it. Don't call us; we'll call you." A search on ar15.com turned up an old thread where one guy said it took them 3 *months* to process his RMA. So at this point, I may not have a working rifle for the MoMe.

61 I got no range reports right now, and no gun reports.

Only thing I've done differently the last couple of weeks is carry while at home (which is, also, at the office). I've had some handymen in the house, and it made sense that if I normally carry while out and about, I should carry when other (unknown) people are in my home.

No one said anything, so I assume I don't print too badly.

Maybe I can get some range time once all of this carp is over.

73 Range report: YES! The range was open at last and I celebrated by bringing out the venerable Ruger KP-89 and banging away like a lunatic because it's the same gun The Mariachi uses in "Desperado." (Okay, mine's in 9mm, Banderas uses a .45, so what.)

Also got in some solid .32 Magnum work. The Charter Arms Undercoverette continues to impress. As one would expect of revolvers, repeated use smooths out the trigger and it's rapidly reaching the comfort zone previously held by the Taurus 85.

For those of you who remember a previous range report on this fine piece of machinery, the points of aim from the various calibers have converged slightly. My best guess is that as I become more comfortable with it, the differences in recoil between .32 magnum, .32 long and .32 ACP cease to matter as much. Put simply: it's running better, which is what one expect as the break-in period continues.

Some ranges require you use their targets at inflated prices. Using tape or pasters, you get more mileage out of the targets. At outdoor ranges, it can minimize the mess that you have to take with you or dump. If you want to go inexpensive, there are a number of websites where you can print your own targets or even just use a sheet of typing paper.

78 A bit of trivia on the Stinger aircraft gun. A Marine in G Company, 28th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Division was unimpressed with Marine squad support weapons, so he modified six Stingers into light infantry MGs, adding a BAR bipod and a cut down Garand stock for a buttstock. They were used to good effect on Iwo Jima.

He had to visit America to look at and fire small arm weapons of the Royal Navy, circa WW I. He'd evidently never done much, if any shooting. He did well. The range of firearms is more extensive that imagined. A 1911 in .455. A Webley semi auto, a Webley automatic revolver. An S&W and a Colt revolvers in .455.
The second video showed him and his wife, at the Maryland Machine Gun Club. Bren, Lewis, Maxim, MG 42 and an M 2. Worth the time to watch.

92 Range report: Took my .38 Colt Cobra snubbie to see how far out I could push it. Six rounds fired in each round, all double action at a fairly fast pace. Did fine at 10 yards - all hits on the silhouette. 15 yards was marginal at best. One or two hits hit the target, but the rest missed (still hit paper, though). I decided not to try to push out any further. If I can't do that well at 15 yards, I'm certainly not going to improve by trying for 20. For now, I think 15 yards is about my max effective range w/ that Colt Cobra.

They'd be worth a small fortune now. *sigh*

107 I believe most of the K-31 Swiss rifles in existence are owned by Americans.

Posted by: blake
---------------------
Centerfire Systems in KY did have some K31's in and selling them cheaper than normal due to some anniversary sale. About $400. They also have quite a few other used revolvers and other firearms and good people to deal with.

You can also find the less common K11 carbines which were the model for the K31 while using the older k1911 rifle action. Tad less accurate than the K31's. Those are usually a bit cheaper than K31's when you can find them.

Coincidentally, it was completed on the same day that grandson #1 completed The Crucible at Parris Island and received his Eagle, Globe and Anchor, so I'm thinking this will be a "Welcome to the Band of Brothers" present.

109 Range report! My buddy and I hit the indoor range Friday night. We've found a few more potential buddies but the scheduling has not worked out yet.

I shot the 1911 a lot - I'm having a lot of trouble with the sights, but I think a little paint or whiteout will do the trick. I always enjoy shooting it!

I had another decent outing with the P365. For both the 1911 and the P365, I started out missing low but was able to make steady improvement and by the end of the session I was hitting where I'm aiming. I'm happy with the progress but I know the bad guy isn't going to stand still for 10-20 rounds while I dial it in! So, more penny drills for me.

After the snubbie discussion a few weeks ago I decided to try the one Jesse had. Jim SND helped ID it as a S&W pre-model 10. I didn't enjoy shooting it because it doesn't fit my hand very well.

As usual I wrapped up with the model 28 (6 inch barrel) revolver because it's so dadgum fun! I shoot this very accurately single action and have started practicing double action.

111 They are around and usually a bit cheaper than the 7.62 converted ones. So, you can always get one reasonable if you want one. If you want a large ring Mauser, the Spanish M43 Mausers are a strong and decent action. They even had Spanish AirForce marked ones. These usually go well under 500 at Gun broker when they pop up.

This is part of the Great Schism between USPSA and the international version of the same shooting sport, IPSC. USPSA targets have "heads," although they really seem more like one of the robots from Robotron 2084. IPSC targets are shaped like a stop sign.... although if you look at the shape and size of the scoring areas, they are remarkably similar to a human torso and where the spine/heart is...

Funny enough, I recall seeing a picture many years ago of a German IPDA target that had TWO heads on (one over each shoulder), thus making it NOT a human silhouette. I'm not sure if this is an urban legend.

SiD, if you still want to shoot that pre-Model 10, could you change the grips out? A lot of S&W snubbies never felt "right" to me because their factory grips are way too small for my taste. After market grips should be readily available from a number of manufacturers.

172 Getting back to the KP89, for years I had regarded it as a lower-tier weapon, not on par with SIGs or Walthers.

So my experience yesterday was something of a revelation. I hadn't gotten it out in a while and I was expecting a serious falloff in performance but it wasn't half bad, not at all.

All of which is to say that while a finely crafted instrument helps, skill is usually a much bigger factor. Since I picked that up all those years ago, everything about my shooting has improved, and guess what? I can appreciate the clunky weight of that KP89 and squeeze more performance out of it than I thought it was capable of generating.

173 I have so many miscellaneous accessories in a drawer, and I need to sort them out. Mlok to rail strips, optics, and tiny screws. My rifle case has a bag with twelve little allen wrenches in it. I surely don't need all of them.

174 Based on local observations in Michigan, I'm sensing bolt actions in general are not getting much love. Everyone wants polymer ARs or former ComBloc guns.

Mosin Nagants skyrocketed after "Enemy at the Gates" came out, but I think there may be a dip coming. I saw Arisakas (admittedly flawed) going for grocery money.

Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. Lloyd
-----------------------
Ammo cost and availability is one reason. The cheap imported surplus blasting ammo is now gone. For many of them like the Arisaka, they are for primarily reloaders only unless you have a rechambered one or like fireforming a wildcat chamber.

If you ever decide you want an Arisaka, Castle Thunder website (run by two guys out with an Arisaka collector book) has datasheets that interpret the Kanji script on them so you get their year of mfg, series, and so on.

Itis a very handsome piece of equipment and from the reactions I keep getting when people see it, I think I made a pretty good choice. Not mention that it was really fun to shoot although because of the fire drill session got cut a little short.

178 Yes, after dialing in swa's optic I shot the Raptor II as comparison other with iron sights. I blew out the bullseye on our target with 5 rounds at 7 yards. I NEVER shoot that well because, well, I am just not that good. The dude next lane over peers around the side panel and says was that a 1911? His shooting partner ran over to look, too. And that's when they saw Sharon's gun.

BTW, this is the guy with the Nighthawk. His carry gun was a Wilson Combat in 9mm. So he had some appreciation for 1911s.

I could have sworn it was banded -- and thus easier to disassemble for cleaning; and I see the self-priming model isn't until 1770, so I'd be missing out on that too.

I wondered if you had an old version or the new. What is funny is that, once police switched to autos, the market for 4inch revolvers died-out. Now-a-days, it's either snubbies or 6+ inch barrels for revolvers.

Back when I was a patrol officer, my sidearm was a Colt Trooper Mk II in .357 Mag. That was a heavy revolver with almost a bull-barrel to help minimize recoil. I ended up selling it, when I went to a auto for a sidearm. First a Glock 19 in the 9mm Euro-pellet and then the Colt Double Eagle in .45 ACP once we convinced our Chief to allow more cartridge options.

Best shot I ever made was with my Double Eagle when I put a bullet right between a pit bull's eyes when he was in mid-leap about to take a chunk out of me!

Very nice whig! My favorite Arisaka is actually the Type I with the Carcano action. Heavy, but zero recoil and the magazine is what the Italians should have adopted for their Carcanos but they were set in their clip feeding way.

236 That is one of the great unsung miracles was when Grumman invented that turret for their first Turkey.

Curtis could not invent such a turret for their Beast. At first the SB2C-1s went to war with a single .50 cal in a Scharff ring and later models reverted to the defensive armament of the Dauntless that the Helldiver was intended to replaced, two .30 cal machine guns.

244 blaster - that mug’s a souvenir from the Hawthorne NV ordnance museum.

Highly recommend a visit if driving through western NV. Huge ammo depot built for WWII, supplying the Pacific theater. Now just some de-milling goes on there. Scenic valley.

Highlight for me was the 16-inch naval gun stuff - shells, sections of unused spare barrels.

Posted by: rhomboid at August 28, 2022 08:20 PM (OTzUX)

245 Regarding 4 inch revolvers, there seems to be a resurgence in heavier calibers. The Taurus Tracker .44 Magnum in 4 inch barrel length seems to have found a niche.

Not as heavy as the longer barrel versions, and packs enough horsepower to kill anything you run into whilst hiking in the woods.

Carried in a comfy semi-open carry rig (open carry is legal in Michigan), and it would be a great camping/hiking option for self defense.

Those are generally in very good condition as they were not used much by frontline troops. I don't have one but supposedly they are one of the more accurate Arisakas which I do not doubt partially because the Japanese stuck with Metford rifling long after the Brits stopped using it. I actually have a nice wartime capture (probably due to intact mum) 7.7 Arisaka complete with the poncy bipod and the ambitious air craft wings along with a chromed bore. Rebuilt a 6.5 Japanese Long rifle and have several carbines. Rebuilt a 7.7 Arisaka as a shooter just so I won't be tempted to take the cherry one out to the range.

Look into fishing lure paint if your piece is one you hunt with and is subject to harsher environs than ranges. It's flat, unlike nail polish, and I think more durable than model enamels.

267 Weasel. SiD's Pre-Model 10 is a square butt, and will use any standard "K-frame" grip, sized thus.

Her's is a "five-screw" also known as a "long action" S&W. Fortunately, Smith had already resolved the shape of both the square and round butt dimensions of the K-frame grip, which continues today and carries over to the "L-frame" advancements. IIRC, even the mighty "X-frame" guns hide a round butt "K-frame" dimensioned grip frame under whichever external grips they ship with.

"N-frames" though, have dimensions unto themselves, in both the round and square butt variants.

In for the foreground on the flight deck is an actual survivor of the Battle of Midway, an SBD-2 Dauntless. Behind it to the left is a Vought SB2U Vindicator, the type saw its last action at Midway. Directly behind the Douglas diver bomber is a cut-away fuselage of a PBY-5 while suspended directly above is another Catalina of the type that found the Midway invasion force.

The P-40 with the shark's mouth was actually a P-40C recovered from Russia and painted in the P-40B markings of a Naval Aviator who flew with the AVG. A J2F Duck is suspended directly above the Dauntless, hence the shadows on that plane.

Other stuff lurking in the photo is a USCG Widgeon, the wing of Japanese N1K2 George, and a Lockheed TV-2 SeaStar, a Navy T-33.

The SBD Dauntless had two big drawbacks in the eyes of the USN: 1) It had non-folding wings, which severely limited the number of planes a carrier air group could field, and 2) it was SLOW. Max speed clean was 250 mph (Douglas' claims), but when loaded w/ a 1,000 lb. bomb, it couldn't make 150 mph. This wasn't a problem pre-WWII, when the TBD Devastator was the Dauntless' stable mate, but in an era where the SBD was teamed w/ the Hellcat and Avenger, the slow SBD held back the rest of the carrier's strike package, especially the Hellcats.

298 Actually, the backtracking, ducking around barriers and scooting along walls was challenging on its own. Loose gravel, rocks, tree roots. Then there were very specific areas in which you had to shoot. And you couldn't overstep the boundaries. You had to shoot in a certain order and some of the flights had as many as 10 different targets. Most of them were partially covered by a "hostage."

Vary different than standing and plinking. Anyone interested should Go and observe a match. Then see what you think.

That last one, during my career, ran the gamut of stored in my room in my wall locker to signed out of the arms room like a rifle or mortar.

Someone in another company lost a bayonet in my first mech unit at gunnery. Endless hand-holding searching and training suspended for three days. Previous unit I just left kept them in a foot locker in the platoon CP. Issue time was the PSG tossing "a" bayonet at you through the door. Not "your" bayonet with a number on it (oh, they aren't even serial numbered".

Amber Alert doesn't come close to the pain of a lost sensitive item. A whole installation can get ransacked looking for it.

One thing to watch out for is that the parts come imported from India as non firing replicas (no holes bored for priming or caps into the barrel for example) and the steel may not be so great compared with pricier Italian or US reproductions. Yep. The "ghost guns" aren't the point. The foot in the door is.

Good article here about the ATF decided a legal gun (a G36 clone) is really a machine gun if you destroy it by smashing the insides together with rare parts no one has and then not firing it to see if it's functional:

"The flip side to that coin, though, is that norms work to stabilize a relationship. And relationships are two-sided. So when one side unilaterally throws out the norms, now both sides of the relationship are destabilized, and therefore suddenly hard to predict. For the past few years, manufacturers (particularly in the pistol brace and 80% receiver industries) have tried hard to play ball with the ATF. With the ATF suddenly signaling that it doesn’t want to play anymore, we’ll see what manufacturers —and customers — do."

A low-key version of this is simply integrating moving and shooting into your practice. It only needs to be a few steps and you start to understand how it changes things up.

Obviously some ranges frown on this, but even taking a step or two can give you an idea of how you have to isolate footwork from your upper body.

True. I mean, ATF is calling something that isn't a gun a gun. But that's kind of what they do. An auto-sear is a machine gun in their eyes. I am not defending them. Just saying that this is not some new infringement, its just the old infringement re-applied.

SiD, a good gunsmith and Wyoming should have several, can point you toward a custom grip maker that will take drawings of your hands and then turn them into grips that fit your firearm and your hand. Highly recommended if you are shooting an N Frame like the 1917 but also work well for K or J frames as well. Properly fitting grips reduce recoil impact and increase your control of the firearm. In a crude case, you can also buy oversized plasticized grips and file them the down.

314 The Navy flyers loved their Clunk but SBD came to mean Slow But Deadly.

Even by 1942 the Dauntless was obsolete and its Northrop inspired wing structure meant no Dauntless could ever fold its wings without major redesign. This effectively banned the most beloved dive bomber from the Independence class CVLs because the Dauntless wingspan almost touched both sides of the hanger deck walls and only the Sangamon class CVE carried them for Operation Torch.

The Curtis plane though was cursed by impossible Navy requirements and Curtis mismanagement. But it was supposed to have twice the bomb load of the SBD, greater speed, folding wings, and two of them were supposed to fit with their folded wings on one of the Essex class carrier's main elevators. You can see where the trouble started. And the Son of a B1tch 2nd Class never recovered. It did its job but no one who flew the Dauntless ever liked the Helldiver much less love it.

That hard rubber grip for the 1917 will end up being uncomfy, just like the wood grips on your Pre model 10. They're not at all similar to modern Pachymer or Hogue rubber grips, rather, they're hard rubber analogs of the wood grips of the time.

Also, the 1917 is the progenitor of the N-frame Smiths, and none of the K frame grips will properly fit. You'll have to shop N frame specific grips to get it right. That said? A Model 1917 is a righteous collectible, and I'd put in into the look much, shoot little rotation. It'll be at its maximum value with the original wood grips, which if indeed original, are serial number stamped in ink on the inside flat area of both ofthe grip panels. Having those on the gun certainly adds +$100 value.

With ar10 there isn't one standard, so you need to research dmps 1 or 2, low or high. I started with a complete aero lower and I found a builder's kit at ballistic advantage. I also ended up buying several tools. I got an AR tool, a torque wrench, a barrel dimple jig, and a carbide bit for dimpling the barrel.

369 342 Thanks whig, I do know of a couple gunsmiths in town. The 1917 is mine (J transferred it to me before he moved out here) so I'd be willing to put more $ into it at some point. Also, I like shooting it even though it's currently a little awkward with the wood grips.

(The snubbie may not be staying with me so I probably won't put much more effort/$ into it until everything is sorted out.)

I've actually had decent luck with ebay as far as grips both repro and original. Eagle Grips, Inc. is an old established grip firm that also has a webpage and sells premium grips at premium prices.

Hogue is one of the slimmer versions around that are rubber and easy to contour to your own hands to some degree (plus cheap so you would not feel bad doing that. Given the 1917 age, you might have to do a bit of trimming or have your gunsmith do it.

Pachmyr grips are in the middle as far as cost, the Combat now named Gripper grips have the thinnest profile, then Decelerator grips, with the Presentation the thickest in profile.

376 363 >If you don't mind a build question (or several), how did you get started? What is the first / most important component to select?

With ar10 there isn't one standard, so you need to research dmps 1 or 2, low or high. I started with a complete aero lower and I found a builder's kit at ballistic advantage. I also ended up buying several tools. I got an AR tool, a torque wrench, a barrel dimple jig, and a carbide bit for dimpling the barrel.
Posted by: bonhomme at August 28, 2022 09:06 PM (i0wNm)

Thanks, bonhomme! Gives me somewhere to start. The build kits I've seen online look super-expensive and not particularly customizable.

The basics of a DIY rifle build are an area into which I've never really ventured -- maybe somebody cough, Weasel could schedule some time to discuss the topic at the TXMoMe.

I would suggest building an AR first to gain a little knowledge because the parts are standardized and the process is similar.

On LR-308's or AR-10s (there is a difference), you have two different makes that are not compatible with each other in some major components--bolt, upper receiver, barrel, and some parts that fit those assemblies. There is a specific AR-10 forum that is pretty helpful to folks wanting a build. The most common and cheapest to build is a LR308 but then as someone said, you have two different upper sizes that are fractionally different. That make a difference on whether the upper matches up with the handguard for sighting or scope purposes if you are free floating the barrel (recommended) but otherwise the parts are similar.

Where people often fall astray is that they try to use AR15 parts that are dimensionally different in an LR308--the bolt catch is different, it is retained by a small allen screw, the ejection port cover is obviously different, and the recoil system requires a 308 calibrated weight and spring in your buffer tube. The bolt, charging handle, barrel/nut/handguard, flash hider, and handguards are not AR15

387 Late to the ever interesting WGT, wading through the content takes time if you try to pay attention.

I will add that Cabelas had a three pack of sight "paint sticks", red, green, and white. A paint stick is not exactly user friendly but it seemed to do the job if I followed the directions (what a concept). Not sure yet about the durability but it did the job for the Buckmark front sights, now I'm thinking I need to do the rear sights in a contrasting color.

As always, thank you Weasel for the effort and care you put into this weekly posting.

392 Texas has a law saying you can't ban guns outright from state and local government buildings. There are some exceptions like prisons, courtrooms, public meeting rooms while meeting are taking place, etc., if you are licensed you can carry in the Capital Building even. With constitutional carry they are still working out some kinks. So, I go to a brand new state building and notice a 30.06 and a 30.07 sign posted and I think to myself, they can't do that. Turns out I was right, the sign is no longer there.

Many years ago (1985) I bought a scope mounting kit from a company named S&K Mfg Co. It allows me to remove the 1917 sight and mount the scope adapter in the sight mounts. No alterations needed. Have original sights on now.

S&K Mfg Co. Pittsfield ,PA.

Posted by: Javems
----------------
S&K is still in business and still making scope mounts that do not require much if any gunsmithing. In the case of the Enfield that I mentioned above, I decided the poor old receiver did not need additional holes in it and set out to find out the matching scope mounts for it. Took about ten years and found the side mount for scope rail from Numrich for the princely sum of 7 bucks. But, it required a scope mount which had to come from England but that scope mount is going to require drilling a hole in it for mounting.

Generally speaking, I don't scope old military warhorses unless the receiver is already tapped because they shoot from 3-5 MOA on average which iron sights are fine to have for that level of precision.

If you want, I can walk you through building one but a lot of places already have done that. The build of an LR308 is not much different than an AR15 build--it does require a few different tools specialized for the larger size of the receiver and barrel but the steps are the same.

If you search for step by step building of an AR15, you should get a nice pictorial step by step. Brownells incorporated has videos specifically how to do that or other gunsmithing tasks.

The major different on the LR308/AR10 are the tools, and parts. Parts selection is more limited and picky as mentioned above but some parts like most of the AR15 lower parts kit will fit a 308 as will stocks. It is the parts to complete the upper assembly and tie it to the lower receiver which is wider and longer for the 308 cartridge length that are different.

Competition will make you a better shooter. Period. Nothing will focus your attention like having an audience and keeping score. Let me repeat that. Nothing will focus your attention like having an audience and keeping score.

I find that play at a higher level of golf when 50 cents is on the line; competition does heighten your focus.

It's not just true in competitive shooting.

I highly recommend the series of videos by Larry Potterfield at MidwayUSA as well as the vids from Brownell's. Larry devotes one video to each build step, usually no more than a minute and a half to three minutes long. Convenient to play them several times in order to get the procedure fixed in your mind.

414 Awww....late to the guns.

For the record, did get to the range yesterday with the Nurse. Was adjusting the optic on my XD9, got it zeroed with 124 gr Federal American Eagle (good ammo) and then just had some fun, doing one handed drills and some two handed 10 yard rapid double taps. I really, really loved shooting the XD 9. It relaxes me.

Shooting the Zinc Point 115 gr ammo, I had some light primer strikes. Retry did work. I've had this problem with other pistols, including the Taurus G3C. Other guns (Glock and PSA Dagger) have no problems with it.

Also shot said Dagger a few times just to remind myself how good that $300 pistol is.

415 Larry devotes one video to each build step, usually no more than a minute and a half to three minutes long.

Larry has specialized tools for every single pin and part on the whole damn gun. Granted, some are absolutely necessary like the barrel nut wrench, but you really don't need a dozen different punches, pliers, and jigs.

And speaking of specialized tools, ask here if someone has one to loan before you buy something you might only need once.

457 My spouse and i were absolutely lucky when Chris could finish off his research
by way of the precious recommendations he made from your very own web pages.

It is now and again perplexing to just find yourself releasing helpful tips which other folks
have been selling. So we already know we need the website owner to give thanks to for that.
The specific explanations you've made, the simple site
navigation, the friendships your site make it easier
to create - it's mostly sensational, and it's really leading our son and us feel that the concept is awesome, and that is incredibly serious.
Thanks for the whole lot!

458 The other day, while I was at work, my sister
stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a twenty five
foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation. My apple ipad is now broken and she has

to share it with someone!

459 I think that what you composed made a great deal of sense.

But, think about this, suppose you were to write a awesome headline?

I am not saying your information isn't solid., but what if you added
a title to maybe grab a person's attention? I mean Gun Thread: End of August
Edition! is a little vanilla. You should look
at Yahoo's front page and see how they create post titles to grab people to open the links.
You might try adding a video or a related picture or two to get readers excited about what you've written. In my opinion, it might bring your website a little livelier.
