That is very cool. When I did my fellowship in Germany five years ago (wow, five already?), I took a cruise down the river from Mainz to Koblenz--the "Romantic Rhine" stretch they talk about. Extremely recommended. Definitely one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

We were stationed in Wiesbaden at the time, and traveled all over Europe (the US dollar ruled and you could stay in five star hotels for the cost of a Holiday Inn).

88 I took the afternoon off and went to the somewhat abandoned arboreteum in the woods. Forest Service started planting lots of different trees there, starting in 1912. Most of them died off but there was a grove of spruce trees that smelled wonderful. And I'd forgotten about the giant sequoias. And there are chestnut trees. There is a nice trail to walk through it but I decided to just check it out a little ways.

When I was sitting outside with my pack of cats in earlier times, the boss male always sat facing the other way so nothing could sneak up on the group. Made it tough to get pictures of him when he was 'on duty'

When he passed away, the young mild-mannered male cat started doing the same thing though he's got no alpha nature.

I read a book a while back on the distortions in WWI history - there was a bit where when Petain was rebuilding the French army's morale with modest bite-sized offensives near Verdun they couldn't get any credit since the government had already lied and said they had taken the entire area before.

He was contrasting the maintenance of the French and German graves and pondering that you'd think the French lost rather than won.

You might do best going to places where the US troops fought as I think they are better maintained.

The river is flanked by steep mountains, as seen in the photo, but there are amazing incredibly steep shale vineyards, up high, all along the river.

Off-dry riesling and other whites, with pastries, made for very nice snacks along the way (the boat would stop at many small towns).

I am late to the thread. I still feel bad that I wasn't able to keep the dog I found. I bonded with her.
I don't have a fence and she looked like she was going to attack my husband and kids. The lady at the humane society told me the dog wasn't aggressive, just scared and they revert to almost feral quickly. She was adopted in I think 2 weeks.

Thought so - she's learning the turf, and all about all of you. Just cautious. Some cats are wired so high they can't show more than to accidentally turn up where you are if you move and never show much. Most find a way to show how they feel, even if its not every day. My guard cat would become a lap cat only on rainy days in So Cal, and would every so often be a fur necklace in bed at night.

I think PC power supplies have a fuse like trip switch, you can see if it went off and flip it if it has. If you have a volt meter you can plug it in and measure on the plugs.

I have come to accept that it's a spiritual moment and not a human moment. That said, I still can't understand how humans can lean towards destruction like that. Planned destruction, with decades of movement, for a purpose.

Yes. But has no legal meaning. Clear and present danger test applied to free speech cases way back when but not since Brandenburg v. Ohio in 1969 which applies the imminent lawlessness test. You have to be specific in a threat and have credibly advanced the threat via specific actions and that threat must be imminent.

I've got my fingers crossed. I've had lots of cables go bad. Never one of those, but it happens.

I don't know if it was mentioned, but try the PSU cable in another outlet, because I've also seen outlets fail in odd ways (top work, bottom wouldn't or vice versa)

The part that I still can't wrap my head around is the desire for destruction.

We had reached a point where things were pretty darn great. Even after the politicians kept pulling the rug out from normal Americans by shipping jobs overseas and screwing up electricity and cars and the like, things were going great in the 90s through 2020.

And they wanted to destroy it on purpose. And did. They got your elderly family members and friends to die. They WANT your children to die. If it doesn't happen immediately, that's fine. Poverty and starvation will catch up eventually.

I have come to accept that it's a spiritual moment and not a human moment. That said, I still can't understand how humans can lean towards destruction like that. Planned destruction, with decades of movement, for a purpose.

They wish, every thing is turning up turds for them because threats, economic deprivation, etc. is far more likely to enrage the majority to vote against them than bow down. Joey Glue Sniffer is down to 38 percent approval again despite trying to buy votes, the FBI is in disarray, the military lurches from disaster to disaster, the courts are reining in some of the excesses now, and Covid/monkeypox/whatever is effectively demised, deceased, is no more, etc. no matter how many times that they put the shock paddles to it.

This is a coup regime aware of what they did to get in power and that staying in power depended on policy success and public approval. None of that has materialized.

There are some questions about QC on the vaccine itself, as well as how it is administered. If some lots were blank and others hot, there is a lot of variety in possible injury. I think that 20 years is like saying a dog ages 7 years for every human year. Interesting, maybe correct, generally not helpful

Right now, I am agnostic about the degree of dementia and the effectiveness of drugs given to him. Unfortunately, I have personal experience and vascular dementia presents somewhat differently than Alzheimers depending on what circuits got fried. Joe has a history of vascular events and basically is a poster child for it. So, you end up giving a specific drug class like Aricept to enhance memory enough of the practice to deliver a speech. Problem is that it can cause violent rages while improving memory marginally in some patients. I've seen it. So, it is unclear because this WH is so opaque who exactly is driving the bus.

414 I've been to that castle - and it is spectacular! Not much of it is medieval, mostly a 19th century romantic re-creation, but yes, it is on a very tall hill, overlooking the Mosel.
Cochem is a pretty little town, as well ... and you have to be careful when you go wine-tasting. They gave out the wine samples in half-filled water classes. (Or at least they did in 1985...)
