From WSJ, a piece (behind a paywall, but you can listen to an annoying version of it) entitled Education Schools Have Long Been Mediocre. Now They're Woke Too. Plus a Wonderland video on how liberal elites folded when confronted with leftist radicals, "Smiley Face Liberalism".

I studied for a master's degree in education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2015. My program was batty. We made Black Lives Matter friendship bracelets. We passed around a popsicle stick to designate whose turn it was to talk while professors compelled us to discuss our life's traumas. We read poems through the "lenses" of Marxism and critical race theory in preparation for our students doing the same. Our final projects were acrostic poems or ironic rap videos.

The "Wonderland" video at the WSJ link is not behind the paywall. I didn't know that Seattle had a "Summer of Love" way back in 1967. I thought 1969 was the big year. The disorder of those early years led to disaster in our schools and other institutions today. Brings some perspective to the current trashing Seattle during its more recent "Summer of Love".

The experience of the author in the WSJ article above is not unique. Larry Correia describes son's honors English class in small town Morgan, Utah, complete with a "Critical Approaches to Note Taking" handout, by which they were forced to analyze "The Great Gatsby" for a full trimester. Instead of, you know, learning English literature or writing. How many of those kids do you think would ever want to read a novel after that experience? In one nearby school district, the word "critical" is now forbidden to teachers, and they don't understand why. Seems arbitrary, but there may be a reason . . .

Just in case you wanted to see what a full-on, lower-level academic paper in "Whiteness Studies" looks like, here's 'White Innocence and Mexican Americans as Perpetrators in the School-to-Prison Pipeline'.

There is some helpful background on how "whiteness studies" evolved from other grievance studies. The thesis of the paper seems to be that there has not been enough research into the efforts of teachers to protect "white innocence" in the disproportionate disciple of Mexican-American students. I hope I am getting this right: The goal of "Whiteness studies" is to get white people and others who "enact whiteness" to become "race traitors" and "eliminate the concept of race". Maybe that's not exactly it. But I am trying to understand. Maybe I am not trying hard enough. I have not "done the work".

We certainly cannot discuss things like this in "Whiteness Studies":

24 Until now student borrowers have enjoyed a moratorium on principal payments and accruing interest has been getting permanently forgiven. Worth $5000 to the average borrower so far (many have large balances).

So the new Biden deal will require them to start paying in 2023, and $10K/$20K in forgiveness will leave many with still large balances. And they should pay taxes on the forgiveness.

When do they wake up and see that their alma maters fucked them big time.

I think the "race baitors" have already accomplished that mission. Being a Mexican citizen or being a Muslim is enough distinction to be considered a "race".

I'm guessing that people who have been raised in a Day Zero culture, where there is no objective history do not have the mental structure, vocabulary and discipline to contemplate genetics and ancestry outside of categorical depictions such as "European Colonizers".

In the Thousand Genome Project (1KP) Dr Nathanial Jeanson has performed a lot of work that largely demonstrates that we are far more closely related than what the race hustlers and evolutionists want us to believe. To believe in "race" in a Critical Theory context is absolutely absurd, particularly since their CT Matrix is based on demonstrably arbitrary criteria. (why not consider left-handedness or attached/detached earlobes as race indicators? Why melanin content and presumed deep ancestry as if our heritage is less branched than royal blue bloods)

You might be in luck if you physically go to your local walmart and look for yellow clearance stickers. I saw a nice $600 gaming desktop for $200 at ours. Didn't need it but was very tempted. They had some decent laptop clearance deals, too.

You need to define "equal".

Clearly we are not equal in terms of social status, physical and mental attributes. In orthodox Protestant religious terms, most people are vessels of Wrath and will see eternal destruction while some will see Glory.

Our brains are wired differently so some will seek success, others will seek a drug habit. Men are generally stronger than women. Some people are left brained others more right brained. There are congenital defects and advantages that augment whatever experiences or disciplines are built upon it.

I submit that "created equal" is a simple expression for a well defined context. The idea that slaves were "created equal" to freemen begs challenging what the contemporary understanding of "equal" actually embraced.

Check the power strip first. Make sure the cord is plugged in properly in the back of the computer, and, then check the other end where it plugs into the power strip. Believe it or not, single outlets in a power strip have been known to go bad.

If that doesn't do anything, then, check the power supply where the cord plugs into the system. Some power supplies have on/off switches on them, or, a switch to convert between 110/220 and make sure that's not been moved. (this is very rare, but, is known to happen) After that, still nothing, no lights, probably power supply.

Like quantum mechanic said above, if there is zero beep beep and whir whir then it is probably the power supply which is a cheap fix (maybe $30-$40 for parts) and fairly simple to do (really simple if you know what you're doing, more like regapping your spark plugs simple of it's your first time with no one to show you).

Unless the cord has been abused, not likely. The power supply is actually always "on", and could have been damaged by a voltage spike over night. Unplug the main cord. Wait a few minutes, then, plug the cord back into the outlet. See if it fires up. If not, time to replace the supply. Usually the electrolytic capacitors fail after a number of years. Easier to replace the supply.

It's simultaneously a huge waste of money while also not accomplishing anything meaningful for borrowers. 10k, 20k if you had pell grants - means fuckall vs. the loan totals students have these days. The primary group benefiting from this are dropouts who only went to school for a year or so.

Meanwhile, I've pointed out before - I had ~45k - that's 45 thousand fucking dollars - tacked onto my student loan debt via paperwork fuckups after Obama's loan nationalization, wherein my privately serviced loan note was seized by the feds and farmed out to some shit fly-by-night operation. I know 2 other people who also had 20-40k tacked on. Years later none of us have been able to resolve the matter because the original loan notes on the servicer end got tossed; it's nothing more than an entry in a database somewhere now. We all make well over the cutoff for this nonsense - not that we want handouts anyways - but the whole situation is pretty infuriating. There is no accountability anywhere.

Y'all missed that part in 2009 where these debts - the ownership of the loan notes - were all nationalized, and all of the loan contracts torn up and replaced with new (and shittier) terms.

We are several steps down the unconstitutional rabbit hole, but at this point - if the feds own the debt (setting aside the illegality of getting there), the feds can write off the debt. That part is the least of the fuckery.

Yeah but I'm not certain that really is significant. Yes it shows that a lot of the degrees they are graduating students with are not of any real world value.

The thing is, a classical education, a proper university degree is not supposed to be a trade school. You should not be going to college to get a great job, you should be going to learn to be a better, wiser, more educated person who knows better how to reason, analyze, and lead. The purpose of higher education is not to get a job, its to become a better citizen and ready to lead the future.

Measuring how many people get what great jobs from college is like measuring how many popcorn bags a movie sold. A movie's purpose is entertainment, the popcorn is a side effect.

Heck, tabletop gaming companies regularly put out big thick hardback rule books that they sell retail for 40-50 bucks. These are super niche customer bases so it's not like they get much economy of scale. Later today or whichever future Saturday I remember to make it into the hobby thread I'm going to have some more commentary on hobby costs, but the tl,dr version is that I recently realized that I'm not as sensitive to a famously price-gougy company's price gouging because I never knew a time before $150 textbooks that you're required to buy but use maybe once, an endless stream of video game DLCs and online game subscriptions, and $500+ iGadgets. It's a generational thing!

Most doctors don't become GPs any more. There's been a shortage of them for decades.
