Good morning, kids. Before getting to the lead story, I want to Psaki-psircle back to the situation in China. Last week's article on the imminent collapse of that nation's housing market led me to speculate that it could be the possible spark leading Emperor Pooh Xi to attempt to engulf and devour Taiwan. It's no secret that that's his goal, except things like Evergrande tanking could screw up his timetable. Just as the junta in Argentina calculated back in 1982, a war could be just the tonic to distract the people from a collapsing economy and so, the Falklands. Look what happened to that junta and look what's happening to the Russians (so far). For sure, the Argentine military and even the Russian army don't come close to the vaunted status of the PLA, but the question remains of both preparedness and above all morale of the troops. With that longer-than-desired preamble we have two stories that perhaps put things in a more interesting perspective.

First: China Struggles to Prevent Food Crisis as Drought Hits Heartland Farms

"China’s record-breaking heatwave began in mid-June and has since caused much of the country’s central and southern regions to experience drought conditions."

Second, and quite eyebrow-raising: Beijing Imposes Vaccine Mandate, Backs Down and Cancels After 48 Hours Due to Public Outrage

"This must be a first in communist China. Is Xi nervous about the pending 20th Party Congress, where he hopes to ratify his plan to become dictator for life?"

A couple of observations. First, any news that comes out of China must be taken with a fairly large grain of salt, considering that the media is heavily censored as well as totally controlled by the government (sounds familiar, right?). That said, even a totalitarian regime like the PRC can't control everything and sometimes the truth does come out, as is the case with the drought and the crashing housing market. As for the government backing down in Beijing over mandates, my gut tells me this is not only true, but it is revealing about the mood of the people not just in the capital city but throughout that country.

Second, even Xi and his minions are not infallible. We only have the barometer of our own horrendous bureaucrats and politicians to go by, but human nature is what it is as is history. Did anyone ever expect the Soviet Union to collapse like a wet blini when it did? That's not to say that Xi and his ilk are in imminent danger of being ousted and Red China going the way of the Berlin Wall. But China today is not the China of 1989. Tiananmen Square was big and shocking enough, and yet the tanks eventually rolled over that unknown man and many thousands of others just like him. Yet here and now, all of these developments still lead me to believe that perhaps the Chi-Coms are heading for some "interesting times" of their own.

Meanwhile, in another part of the forest and speaking of totalitarian regimes with a shameless lust for power and control, this non-bombshell bombshell dropped late yesterday:

In the wake of the FBI raid on Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home in Florida, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre insisted multiple times that no one in the White House (from Joe Biden all the way down) had any role in the investigation of Trump or knew about the raid. They used the Obama administration’s go-to talking point that they only heard about it through the media.
But, according to memos obtained by Just the News, the Biden White House worked directly with the Justice Department and National Archives to launch the criminal investigation into Trump’s alleged mishandling of classified documents and deny Trump’s claims of executive privilege.

The memos show then-White House Deputy Counsel Jonathan Su was engaged in conversations with the FBI, DOJ and National Archives as early as April, shortly after 15 boxes of classified and other materials were voluntarily returned to the federal historical agency from Trump’s Florida home.
By May, Su conveyed to the Archives that [so-called quote-unquote "president"] Joe Biden would not object to waiving his predecessor’s claims to executive claims, a decision that opened the door for DOJ to get a grand jury to issue a subpoena compelling Trump to turn over any remaining materials he possessed from his presidency.
The machinations are summarized in several memos and emails exchanged between the various agencies in spring 2022, months before the FBI took the added unprecedented step of raiding Trump’s Florida compound with a court-issued search warrant.
. . . So, not only did the White House lie, they lied big time. The Biden White House was directly behind the effort to launch a criminal probe of Donald Trump, Biden’s 2020 opponent and potential 2024 opponent, in part by eliminating a potential legal defense Trump’s team might use in a battle with the FBI over access to the documents. . .
. . . This scandal just got a whole lot more serious.

Serious? Yes. Revolting in the extreme? Ditto. Surprising? Not in the least. That's why I characterize it as a non-bombshell bombshell. We know what Biden's controllers are capable of because they've already used every part of an already nakedly partisan bureaucracy to try and sabotage 2016 and then successfully steal 2020. In the wake of that, they've invented crimes and conspiracies while using actual crime as a means to distract and upset the populace in an effort to persecute at least half of the citizenry by deeming them "threats to our precious democracy" (*vomits) who should be eradicated.

On a not unrelated note, Anthony Fauci, the pint-sized mad scientist who more than likely aided and abetted the aforementioned Red Chinese in weaponizing a virus that sickened millions and was used with malice aforethought or as a propitious convenience to set in motion the so-called "Global Reset" announced his sudden retirement as of December. Red wave or not, does anyone really think this mass-murdering megalomaniac is ever going to face any consequences for his actions? Ditto anyone in DC who helped overthrow the republic? The corruption is so thorough inside and outside of government and in far too much of our society for any real reckoning, even a freaking wrist-slap at some future Nuremberg-esque trial, to occur.

BUT . . . contra to my generally pessimistic tone of last week, and citing what's going on in Red China, we cannot know the future. These bastards who did this to us are just as inept and prone to mistakes and hubris as those in Beijing. We can't know the future. And hubris on their part will lead to nemesis on ours. It should.

Maybe. Beijing is special. There are lockdowns galore in Red China. They kept Shanghai - a major center of their economic engine - shuttered for a staggering length of time and they're still shoving parts of the city into lockdown periodically. They shut down a tourist city at the peak of tourist season, stranding (and gradually bankrupting) tens of thousands of tourists. Lockdowns are hitting in the western provinces. Xi's "Dynamic Zero" COVID policy is still very much alive.

But Beijing is the capital and full of Party members who get away with way more opposition than the average Chinese. When Beijing locked down last time, it was hard to manage because a lot of people opposed and ignored it and the cops didn't know who would get them fired or killed if they enforced it. Unless it spreads, I suspect that Beijing's opposition is a point of Party privilege rather than Xi trying to do damage control.

This is my take. We won't even get the trial (though we should, and I think that kind of tribunal - including severe punishments or executions of the primary malefactors - is an essential step toward social and governmental recovery). The reckoning for this will come only after a new government (not a new president and congress, but a new *government*) is installed, and so it will not come. By the time we get to that point, there will be other, more recent behavior for which the new state will extract vengeance.

I doubt it. On paper, yes - there is a food problem fairly quickly, as well as a raw materials problem for their industrial sector. But there is never a vacuum and there are 3-4 huge question marks, namely:
1. Taiwan has agency, too, and might decide to fight back either by sinking Chinese ships or by missile striking the Mainland in key targets (Beijing, Shanghai, Three Gorges, etc.). Taiwan has supersonic missiles with range.
2. Japan has a declared interest in Taiwanese independence and a fairly significant military. Japanese intervention is not certain but is likely.
3. Korean intervention is possible. Less likely than Japan but entirely within the realm of possibility.
4. We're a factor, too. Much of our government is owned by the CCP but much of it also continues to view the CCP as the enemy that it is. We'll have a lot of infighting when this happens, but the outcome is by no means known.

And then there's also the poison pill: if Taiwan falls, they scuttle the industries and the CCP gets nothing.

Maybe he could have been a good man once, but he chose a different path. Once you've seen one show like that (for me it was "The Shield"), you've pretty much seen them all.

For a while I was surprised that as the country ratcheted further and further left the GOPe kept telling me I needed to support "moderate" Republican who every year moved further left as the Dems did.

If you were a political moderate in 2004, for example, by 2012 standards you were a conservative and now in 2022 a "far right wing extremist".

But then I realized that this was all a game. Specifically a controlled opposition game. The GOPe runs "moderate Republicans" so that if the voters are upset with the direction the uniparty pursues there is an outlet that let's them think they are doing something while continuing the leftist ratchet...just slower.

Part of the reason that congress writes laws so vague and poorly worded is so that the agency in charge of that area can "legislate" through regulation without congress being "responsible" for the resulting legislation.

They generally know how the agencies are going to "interpret" the poorly worded and vague statute. that's part of the game.

A huge part of the game is congress essentially giving legislative power to the executive agencies, who then act as legislative (writing the regulations), executive (enforcing the regulations) and judicial (your only avenue of appeal is usually to an administrative law judge employed by the agency).

At this point in our history, most of our "law" is actually regulations created by un-elected, unaccountable bureaucrats, enforced by unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats, and adjudicated by unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats.

The "surge" in total income is hugely disingenuous because it controls for neither concentration nor baseline new employment growth since the COVID nadir. What a toolbox.

The past 20 years - really about 2002 or so until around 2010 or 2012 - was a new golden age in television. Cable came into its own, streaming hadn't wrecked the business model and there were lots of good new shows being produced. There was great stuff before that - the Twilight Zone comes immediately to mind (and it might well remain in the "greatest show of all time" position depending on who you ask) and shows like The Wire were on the leading edge of TV's renaissance in the mid aughts. That period, however, was tremendous as well as, I suspect, being TV's last gasp.

It's always like a bad commercial where the actress goes off script because she's too feeble to learn the lines. She's Joe Biden in a skirt, and their is a history to back that up. She was right there for the lockdowns, masking up your kids, and forced vaccinations. In fact she is still requiring vaccinations for state jobs. She helped Cuomo kill grandma and she was right with him for all the garbage he resigned for. Crime is out of control, illegal immigration is going to crush the budget and their is fiscal reckoning that's coming.

But Lee Zeldin is an "extremist" and "it's your right to kill your baby!, says the pretend Catholic. None of that's even a good deflection. She's a complete dunce.

474 "What really happened to Dugin's Daughter?"

The way I see it, there are three logical options. First, just to clarify, from the reports I've heard, Dugin was traveling a bit with her that day in that car, so best guess is that HE was the actual target, and she was just collateral damage.

1.) Ukraine did it. Dugin was really the architect of Russia's expansionist policies. He isn't a "government official" so much as "Putin's buddy who he listens to" and so his protection detail (or lack thereof) would have made him an easier target.

2.) Some dissenting faction in Russia did it. An Oppo party or something like that. The FSB is falling on their sword and saying "we screwed up and let Ukrainians do this", which causes me to believe that that is probably NOT what happened, and reinforces the possibility that it was an inside opposition ("domestic terrorist") action.

3.) Putin did it. I'm struggling more and more to justify this one, because I can't figure out how it could possibly be a plus for him, no matter how it's spun, so I tend to discard this one.
