Google search is quietly damaging democracy. (Wired)

The argument here is that Google moving from providing unbiased, unfiltered search results to attempting to provide you with what they believe is the right answer has a deleterious effect on individual ability in fact-finding and decision making in the modern world and thus in evaluating political news and making voting choices.

Well, so far so good. Needs to be examined but not implausible.

Where the whole thing comes off the rails, ploughs through a nursing home, crashes into a school, bursts into flames, and finally explodes is that this is the thesis of the author's book The Propagandists' Playbook: How Conservative Elites Manipulate Search and Threaten Democracy. (Amazon)

Yes, you read that right: She claims that conservatives are twisting Google's search results with the aim of "humanizing the people whose worldviews and media practices conservatism embodies" - using trickery learned in Bible studies class.

Stirling is doing well, as am I. Linda and I recovered the underside of the couch this weekend and put sticky tape all over the TV stand (it won't stick to the couch). Sunday night Stirling leaped up by the TV and was astonished by the sticky stuff. A piece stuck to his hind paw when he leaped down, and he ran like (in Pixy's words) a crack-addled squirrel with its tail on fire, trying to get it free. I grabbed him and pulled it loose.

He hasn't gone near the TV since.

Basically, it's really powerful, and with art skill and some work you can leverage it into some very impressive covers for relatively lower levels of work. It doesn't so much replace artists, as makes the ones willing to embrace it far more capable and productive.

I did this myself using Bing for search on Jan 6. Same thing happened for me. A few pages of recent events followed by pages of identical results. So 1.4 mm search results advertised but you can actually only see maybe a couple hundred. Try it yourself so you can that feeling of living in a simulation.

Except in my house, and my wife can be wobbly sometimes if she has too much contact with some of her friends, my town is firmly anti-Trump. Not pro-Biden, but firmly anti-Trump.

If the GOPe ran a McConnell-type candidate he/she/it would probably draw plenty of Democrat votes. But would do nothing, once elected, except pass a corporate tax cut and make a couple of deals with China. Republicans winning is not my goal, MAGA winning is.

I'd be wary of anyone estimating their own power being accurate. If it worked then R voting would have been suppressed and yet Trump got more votes than the first time. Tech has influence, but they are selling that influence and are probably as fraudulent there as they are with their advertising projection and user view calculations.
