The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“Only 5 percent of new car and truck buyers choose electric vehicles … unless that number grows substantially and soon, Ford and other automakers who have made woke commitments to EVs are on a dangerous path, and even $7,500 tax credits may not be enough to save them,” Ben Lieberman, a senior fellow at the Competitive Enterprises Institute

Quote II

“We have therefore decided to massively reinforce the resources of the Central Office for the Fight against Damage to the Environment and to launch 3,000 ‘green police’ posts. The objective is that, in each gendarmerie brigade, there are gendarmes trained in attacks on ecology.” Gérald Darmanin,France’s Minister of the Interior

Do you think that he and John Kerry get together and jack off together?

*

Quote III

"It does seem unjust, and there does seem to be a long history of loss of credibility at the Department of Justice at the hands of Democrats. And I think people are rightfully frustrated about that," Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX)

.
I guess it would be mean to call him Squinty McSquint-Squint. So I won't.

*

Quote IV

“They’re saying that they’re going after all of the tax cheats, think about that for a second. They passed a bill on the premise that Americans are tax cheats.” Jobs Creator Network (JCN) President Elaine Parker

*

I had pulled several quotes from the latest Kurt Schlichter opinion piece. But Ace covered it in depth earlier today. Good stuff check it out if you can.

Trump v. United States: Former president files lawsuit to block DOJ reviewing raid evidence

Former President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit demanding the appointment of a special master to independently review any evidence the FBI seized from him as he pushes back against the unprecedented raid of Mar-a-Lago.

Trump filed the motion on Monday seeking an order from a judge which would appoint a special master, which would stop the Justice Department from further review of the information they had seized from his Florida resort home until the special master is appointed.

The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida

I've always laughed off Dennis Rodman after he completed his NBA career. However, now he has more gravitas than any one serving the resident of the White House.

WASHINGTON — Former NBA player Dennis Rodman said Saturday that he plans to visit Russia to seek the release of Brittney Griner, the WNBA star who was sentenced to nine years in prison on drug charges earlier this month.

"I got permission to go to Russia to help that girl," Rodman told NBC News at a restaurant in D.C. "I'm trying to go this week."

He is more likely to hurt than help, said a senior Biden administration official.

“It’s public information that the administration has made a significant offer to the Russians and anything other than negotiating further through the established channel is likely to complicate and hinder release efforts,” said the official.

Too little, too late and my blood still boils.

Statement by Anthony S. Fauci, M.D.
I am announcing today that I will be stepping down from the positions of Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and Chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Immunoregulation, as well as the position of Chief Medical Advisor to President Joe Biden. I will be leaving these positions in December of this year to pursue the next chapter of my career.

It has been the honor of a lifetime to have led the NIAID, an extraordinary institution, for so many years and through so many scientific and public health challenges. I am very proud of our many accomplishments. I have worked with — and learned from — countless talented and dedicated people in my own laboratory, at NIAID, at NIH and beyond. To them I express my abiding respect and gratitude.

Notch a "W" in the good guy's column.

NO DICE: Biden’s DOJ Loses Bid To Seal Entire Affidavit On Mar-A-Lago Raid
Biden pledged to be the ‘President of ALL Americans’ and to ‘Heal The Soul of the Nation’. Some people even believed him.

Meanwhile, back in reality, Donald Trump is calling for ‘full transparency’ and ‘for the temperature to be turned down’ while Biden’s DOJ … doesn’t.

What is offensive? Well, it's always in the eye of the beholder or the mob.

The University of Massachusetts Lowell bans students from sending or viewing ‘offensive’ material online

Most of the internet is apparently off-limits for students at the University of Massachusetts Lowell.

The school’s Acceptable Use Policy, which governs the use of computing and networking resources, prohibits students from intentionally transmitting, communicating or accessing “offensive” material. Every month, the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression highlights a university policy that hinders students’ free expression. Since most online content could be called offensive by someone, the policy has earned the dubious honor of FIRE’s August Speech Code of the Month.

Hey, I want peace, love, understanding and the ability to eat pie without weight gain.
But, I'm more realistic than our favorite Mush Head cabinet member at the moment.

Mayor Pete wants airlines to end delays with no instructions as to how

Department of Transportation figures for the first half of 2022 indicate that nearly a quarter (24%) of all domestic airline flights in the United States were delayed and more than 3% of them were canceled. This situation has left many would-be passengers seeing red and demanding that the government do something about it. The situation was serious enough to stir Mayor Pete Buttigieg (our Transportation Secretary because he’s always “really liked cars” from whatever he normally does to occupy his time and address the problem. During a recent appearance on NBC he said to the airlines “you’ve got to make it easier for passengers to understand their rights. And you’ve got to support passengers when they experience delays or cancellations.” If they fail to do so, the DOT may impose a “rule change.” So what solution does Buttigieg have in mind? His department is setting up a website, which will clearly straighten everything out.

Doesn't the Rainblow Coalition have keys to the Unicorn Fart Lab?

I did not know this. The J6 Congressional committee has 2 members who previously voted against Presidential certification.

I bring completely shocking, unexpected news on this Sunday morning: Liz Cheney is a Democrat.

I know that you are asking yourself how that could possibly be. She’s just so darn principled and cares so deeply about the future of the country. Also, her behavior on the January 6th committee has not at all been antithetical to how justice is supposed in the United States.

Alas, though there was no way to foresee it and no one predicted it, she’s going to be supporting Democrats in the coming mid-terms.

The Unbelievable True Story of John ‘Chickie’ Donohue and ‘The Greatest Beer Run Ever’
There are a number of wartime stories involving beer. For example, William Speakman of the Royal Highland Regiment is famous for holding back 6,000 Chinese troops with beer bottles during the Korean War. There’s also the legendary tale of how the 101st Airborne‘s Vincent Speranza delivered a beer to an injured soldier during the Siege of Bastogne. Oh, and we can’t forget Wojtek, the beer-drinking, cigarette-smoking bear who served with the Polish II Corps during the Second World War.

While those are all iconic, there’s only one beer-laden tale that holds the distinction of being “the greatest beer run ever,” and it occurred during the Vietnam War. This is the story of US Marine Corps veteran John “Chickie” Donohue and his quest to deliver beer to his friends serving overseas.

Posted by: Helena Handbasket at August 22, 2022 10:16 PM (llON8)

75 IMHO Ben Lieberman has it backwards. Ford and other companies are in big trouble because they aren't ready to sell the electric vehicles (EVs) that their customers want; and the $7500 tax credit is stupid because demand for EVs is outstripping supply.

Because the demand for EVs is so high, it's stupid to subsidize it; it's already so high Tesla had to raise prices repeatedly.

I think the $7500 is a bailout in disguise, there to help companies like Ford who are really behind the 8-ball right now. Tesla doesn't need that $7500. (I predict they will raise the prices of their cars at least $7500 now.)

Of course it's hard for me to object to the $7500 because we are talking about letting the taxpayer keep $7500 of his own money. Let's extend that $7500 so that everyone can have it, not just people who bought EVs.

Makes for a good yukitup, but the fact is, McCain's jet was the recipient of the errant Zuni rocket, not the producer of the misfired missile.

Every other plane he McCrashed, was his own direct fault (inferior airmanship), or .Mil-Stupid (pressing attacks in areas briefed as "no-go" due to heavy AA defense, which promptly shot his ass out of the Hanoi skies).

Only reason McCain is strongly linked to the Forrestal fire, is the largeness of the McCain name in the USN, as earned by PREVIOUS generations before him.

Y'all are missing the most important feature of EVs. You can completely remove yourself from government if you can provide your own electricity.

This "government" is doing all that is in their power to dominate, humiliate and confiscate. Since you and your buddies probably don't have a refinery, and if you did, the junta will regulate and tax you to death; you can generate electricity without the government's permission or knowledge. This makes your EV vehicle, during the Burning Times one of the few that you can actually control.

Welp, the only option to save union jobs and our Nation's industrial base will be to nationalize the auto industry and run it on Federal subsidies. By happy coincidence, this will allow us to produce the vehicles WE want made, and that does not include internal combustion-engined vehicles.

The actual fact that the president has unilateral and unlimited authority to declassify anything in any manner, or not, that he chooses was getting too much traction.
Especially that the statutes they cited in the warrent don't apply to the President.

So they've leaked that it was "over 300 classified documents." To short circuit the story back to their narrative.
30 agents. 10 hours. 9 boxes. And only 300 docs? That would have been clearly marked? That he had for over 18 months?

They really needed to distract from the fact that his mere personal possession is declassification, don't they?

Something worse for them is coming. They desperately need him convicted now before the truth comes out. What else did they take? What were they really after?

The have a plan to eliminate that option (besides making gasoline and diesel ultra rare meaning ultra-expensive). Constantly lowering the allowable exhaust emissions. Ultimately, if they get their way, it will be illegal to possess a non-zero emissions vehicle, driveable or not, without a hard to get Federal permit.

If "laid alongside the quay", then yes, that's parallel parking, so long as more than one ship is moored to the pier, wharf or seawall.

If one ship is moored to the pier (etc.), and other ships are tied to the side of that same ship opposite the pier, then they're "moored abreast", which is hot, given that ships are referred to in the feminine. Unless you're German, which refers to ships in the masculine. But they've also got shelves in their shitters, too.

A friend who was on the Forrestal that day blamed McCain. That was good enough for me. He absolutely hated the man and told me so long before McCain ran for president.
Also I thought I read in a findings report that the reason the missles were in an unlocked mode had something to do with McCain.

Sorry, but McCain's aircraft did not launch the rocket that started the disaster. A Zuni rocket on a F-4 Phantom parked on the starboard aft flight deck was fired into a fueled and bomb-loaded aircraft parked on the port aft flight deck. The Navy identified the causes of the unintentional firing (I cannot recall the specifics) and made corrections to the firing circuits.

Due to a late change in design, ALL LPHs (Helo Carriers) had a 2 to 3 degree list to starboard (it was the weight of the Island).

Was always funny because if two of them were in Port, they would ALWAYS tie them up on the same side of the pier, with their sterns facing each other.... so the flight decks were off by about 5 degrees. Messed with a lot of crew until you got used to it.

When he was running for his first term, Eyepatch McCain proudly displayed his selection of alternate eyeballs, some were the Trident (SEALS emblem), some were RatFink bloodshot peepers, and other humorous things. Trying to make himself a "regular joe" to the voters.

Turns out, the voters have learned he's a "regular Joe Biden", and have about as much use for him now as one of Sleepy Joe's used Depends. I'll repeat it here: I'd really be interested in hearing the opions of Crenshaw from The Teams. Do they embrace him? Disown him? Something in between?

I'm so very sad. Wife & I decided we'd buy our first new car, a 2022 V6 Highlander. It would last us until we couldn't drive anymore. Then the chip shortage happened so - no.
"That's okay" thought I naively. "I will just wait and get a 2023 Highlander."
But no! The 2023 Highlander doesn't come with a V6, it comes with a turbocharged 4-banger. "But it will get better gas mileage!" you say. No again! It gets the exact same mileage. It just has lower emissions and less horsepower. And it will wear out sever hundred thousand miles earlier and wind up in a wrecking yard a decade sooner than it would have otherwise. Because that's good for the environment, or something.

All that to say - an almost min-van is not a great place for a 4 cylinder engine.

So they tried fixing that up by having mixed battalions. I believe I was in the first one at Ft. Jackson. It did result in less courts martial.

406 Bitter's Fast Food Principal states that as the messiness of the fast food entree approaches infinity, the odds of the side item surviving the car ride to the destination for eating drops to zero.

For instance: Chicken McNuggets are easily eaten while driving, thus the likelihood of the fries surviving the car ride to the destined eating area is maximal.

However, a Sonic Chili Cheese Coney is extremely tenuous to successfully consume while driving, thus the likelihood of tater tots or onion rings surviving the trip is virtually nil.

The drill cadre fucked with us afterwards -- WHO TOLD YOU YOU COULD DRINK ALCOHOL BEFORE GRADUATION!!! They were going to recycle us and stuff. Some guys were really sweating it but I was, nah, half of us are college kids who are on split options and if they did that, there'd be Congressmen asking why. They were just busting our balls. Being a drill sergeant is hard work. If you knew what you were doing, they left you alone. The drills had their hands full with the idiots. I did get kicked off the claymore training site when I started to correct one of the drills from another platoon.... I ended up doing the claymore assembly drill at the final exam never actually having done it IRL (just read the instructions carefully).

Just before the end of week 2 of airborne school during ROTC, Saddam went into Kuwait. That was a really tense time. They almost canceled the school because they needed every plane over there. Apparently they found a spare C-130 from the KYNG. We jumped the entire school with 1 plane. I think they normally had 5 each of the 130s and 141s. I never did a 141 jump. Too bad. Jumping with a stick of dudes from a large plane and a very loud "GO! GO! GO!" is much easier than sitting in a tiny Cesna with your ass half out the door staring down at the ground 3,000 feet below, then pushing yourself out. I have never been more terrified in my life. It was the only time in my life that I actually made peace with the fact that I may die very soon.

Said he had the platoon do a few rear-marches over him but I doubt that part of the story.

Fast charging is basically a 50 kW. That's 200A at 240V single phase.

So, a home charger ain't coming anywhere near that. 10kW or so max, 50A 240V circuit. 10 hours to fully charge at that rate. And actually longer than that because of various vagaries and details.

You want super fast charging? We're talking 150 kW to 300 kW. One of those, and you're gonna need a big ass 480V three phase service. 600V even better. On walks, she snuffs out all kinds of bugs & things, and then she pounces on them and seizes them with her paws. Obviously a Republican.

Okay, just babbling as I pass by. Gotta get up at first daylight and walk the dog - nice time of day, but up early and hanging out on the OverNight Thread aren't all that compatible.

They had their own side pieces. Don't kid yourself. They were probably thrilled that Ben was taking care of their wives while they drilled the women they actually wanted to be with. Most relationships in European nobility were geopolitical, not love-based. Both Catherine the Great and Marie Antoinette were Austrian because Austria was in the center square and that was important to keeping peace and maintaining at least the illusion of the ability to project power by bringing other countries into your side.

483 Evening.

Watched the 1922 Danish silent film, Haxan, tonight. Wonderful! I loved the shit out of this movie. There's something so awesome about it. It was made in the, well I guess it would be called the Progressive Era. Society was stumbling into modernity while at the same time Africa was still the Dark Continent. Anyway, so it's partly dramatic storytelling, part essay trying to explain in a rational fashion behaviors Medieval people thought of as witchcraft. In a sense it's backwards (it's hysteria as far as the eye can see) but seems like an honest attempt at a rationalization. But the dramatic bits are bug-nuts. Depictions of Satan and demons and all kinds of wild, hellish imagery that is just freakin' *awesome*. Like the woman that gives birth to so many of the Devil's children, and you see these wild monsters crawling out from under the delivery table, Satan is played by some muscle-y dude who is always, for some reason, wagging his tongue. Lots of bare female backs. Anyway, lots of little "shock" moments throughout the film. It's goofy now, but 100 years ago I bet people freaked out.

I loved this. Five stars. Highly recommended.

495 AOP. I wrote in "shortcut" there.

Actually, the technique is "leave it in cruise" and then accelerate, effect the pass, extend well past the slower vehicle, signal and return to "not fast lane". Then, gently lift foot from accelerator, until one feels the "cruise" regain control at the previously set speed.

But that's nuance, not readily available to the average "Oscar Grope" vehicular passenger who resides behind the wheel.

You have to be able to do both. Sometimes, you catch up to the slower vehicle on a 2-lane road when oncoming traffic makes it impossible to pass; then you have to drop out of cruise until the opposing lane clears. Then you give it the gas, pass the slower vehicle, and hit "resume".

I've never owned one of those with the telemetry (and hope to never have to), but I've read about installing terminating resistors on the antenna terminals. That will "short out" any transmitting and receiving.

Well, turned out to be 6 quarts of 'maters with this batch, cooling down now. That makes 55 jars me and Miley have done so far.

As I mentioned, I used the USDA 15 psi "crushed tomatoes" recipe. It took it a while to heat that mass of 'maters up to 15 psi temperature.

And that's not a full low acid botulinum cook either, as the recipe still requires citric acid to get the pH low enough.

One trim level on the Tacoma has the manual gearbox and it's quite expensive...

I've got the most basic level with 4WD, automatic transmission, smaller 2.7L engine...

It's alright...

It would be a great truck if the manual tranny was available in the base configuration!

The big engine for the Tacoma adds over $3000 to the price, and it's an Atkinson-cycle engine. It's much more powerful with the same posted MPG rating as the smaller engine!

Again, thoughtful Toyota, the engine comes with the towing package which is the receiver, wireing harness with two hookups, oil cooler and trans cooler.
