26 Charles Bridge in Prague was a highlight of my trip there.

They had an organ grinder (phrasing) complete with his pet monkey that was walking up to people hat in hand for tips, very cool.

That picture doesn't show how dirty and soot covered the statues on that bridge are though. 700+ years old and amazing to think of all the history they've been witness to.

Really surprised the communists didn't tear them down during their reign of error. Can't let people share a common history or culture outside of the party nyet?

32 A galaxy cluster has so much gas that we've picked up actual sound. Here it's amplified, and mixed with other data, to hear a black hole!

But.... how can they hear it over the intervening space? There's vacuum in between us and that nebula. I'd consider that to not actually be space, since its not a vacuum, but in any case...

I guess what they could do is measure the vibrations in the galaxy somehow and replicate them? But are they that large and obvious, so that they can be measured from a jillion lightyears away?

Exactly, they're seeing pressure waves and such and converting that into "sound" that we can hear. It's the same thing as these false color images that show wavelengths not visible to the human eye so you can "see" them, and see all sorts of cool looking effects.

You're not really seeing anything, other than representation of things you can see in terms of things you can see.

Same here with the "sound".

There are far better space death traps. Like put one in a glass bubble and expose to direct sunlight. That would be produce a very, very painful and protracted death.

Not to go all Nuke or anything, but if something is "falling in" to a black hole you ain't gonna see or hear anything from it. It might be sounds from the matter circling the black hole that is being destroyed before it is drug into the black hole, no idea though as I am not an astrophysicist.

But its okay, I mean people in the past with the best information at their disposal had some really odd theories about how things worked. Its just a matter of being willing to adjust your theories to new data, rather than the opposite, which is far too common in science.

Au contraire. The whirlpool material swirling and falling in, colliding and getting heated to extreme temperatures puts on quite a light show. It's known as the accretion disk.

And then there's the black hole jets. Suppermassive black holes at galatic centers can shoots jet of material out of the poles, accelerating that matter to relativistic speeds.

Its just a matter of being willing to adjust your theories to new data, rather than the opposite, which is far too common in science.

Some of the best times was watching the security cameras tracking the girls with us at check points. Once we figured that out, the girls would hide from the cameras, frustrating the guards, and in a few minutes we were on our way. Someday, I'll tell the story of panicking some East German border guard officers.

My first hunch was that one of our local Cooper's hawks had done the deed since they nest on our roof. Multiple hatchlings last two years, and they sometimes eat on my fire escape balcony, but no. Murder kitty! Kinda fun to be surprised by city wildlife like this.

Well, back when the red shift was being discovered (galaxies found had light shifted to the red, like they were fleeing us...all of them aside from the nearest, and the farther they were the faster they moved. ) This was explained by the universe expanding, and thus running the film in reverse you got to a stage were everything was in one spot, and 'before' became a muddy question.

I do think there's a general problem in current science that they just look at stuff and dash off casual theories rather than come up with some simple process that explains everything. There's too much stuff being made up to fill in holes without evidence to back it up.

It's not a "myth", but it has been "seized upon" you might say.

The bottom line is the JWST telescope is seeing things that the current LCDM cosmological model can't 'splain. If they are true.

They're seeing images of galaxies, that according to theory, should only be 220 million years old or so. Yet, that are way too massive and have stars that appear to be much, much older than they should be, according to current theory.

Now, they may not be as old (and hence young) as they appear. They've already found at least one such image is a very dusty galaxy. It appeared to have a redshift factor of 17, but turns out it's only 5. Which would mean it's well over 1 billion years old.

Actually that is how most advanced physics and mathematics works, first you build the living room and den, then the walls then the roof, and then furnish some of the other rooms, paint it, then you build the foundations.

Then the experimentalists come in and check the corners, footings and tell you if it is real or not

I saw a breakdown of the original 54 billion or whatever and the largest chunk was to US defense firms to pay to refill stores sent out, another big chunk when to NGOs in Ukraine presumably to steam and turn back to US and EU influencers and about 6-8 actually went to Ukraine, where likely it will be mostly stolen.

I went through the hassle of getting a new phone - after mine died - through phoneco's website. Two-factor authentication using my old dead phone was required to use their site. Nice.

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. They may be more likely to go to Heaven yet at the same time likelier to make a Hell of earth. This very kindness stings with intolerable insult. To be "cured" against one's will and cured of states which we may not regard as disease is to be put on a level of those who have not yet reached the age of reason or those who never will; to be classed with infants, imbeciles, and domestic animals.

Quantum Mechanically, Nothing is very much Something. The vacuum has all kinds of interesting quantum mechanical properties. Like polarization - which affects things like the spectrum of hydrogen and is why you don't see quarks in isolation.

The latter is why there literally would be nothing if nothing wasn't something (there would be no matter without the vacuum polarization of the strong force making protons and neutrons).

251 IIRC, IDW was Harris, Shapiro, Jordan Peterson, Eric and Bret Weinstein, Bari Weiss, etc. It was a weird cluster of "smart" internet personalities that supposedly championed traditional "liberal" values such as free speech and open debate, but it was never really a thing, despite an NYT or WaPo writeup, and fractured almost immediately.

I don't think Peterson was ever in the club, though he also had a discussion with Harris. Peterson soon was off on his lecture tours live. I thought the DW was just 4 people when it was passing by me. I never gave them too much credit - I mean the one Weinstein was run out of his job by insane thugs and a cowardly admin and hardly seemed to resent it at all.

While I doubt that your motives here are sincere, I think Thomas Aquinas (who I don't claim to fully understand, but I'm working on it) has it right when he says that there is an important distinction between enjoyment and happiness. Enjoyment concerns satisfaction of worldly desire. Happiness concerns obtaining our absolute perfection, which by definition can only be found in the absolute Being, which is God. Either way, we have the free will to pursue whichever we think is important.

Posted by: Splunge

Essentially, yes. But that effect (confinement) only exists quantum mechanically.

If the world wasn't quantum, the strong force would be just like electromagnetism, only with weird "color" charges instead of electric charges and a "color force" (gluons) instead of photons.

In particular, you would see quarks in isolation like you see electrons: it would only take a finite amount of "ionization" energy to separate them from the nucleus.

We could make "quark motors" driven by "color force" like we make electric motors driven by electromagnetism.

It *should* make things interesting for the Obama junta when the next Republican president is sworn in, but we all know it won't (Biden will be dead, so his executive privilege won't matter).

There should be no such thing as Executive Privilege. Your privilege is getting to make and enforce the damn rules everyone else grudgingly agrees to live by. *Every* elected official at every level should live in constant fear of being found out doing something hinky or corrupt.

Worse still, applying such a privilege to those connected to The Party while removing it from those not connected is absolutely a breach of anything that could even remotely be considered a Social Contract. We The People did not ever agree to be ruled by a single Party of shadowy, unnamed plutarchs governing by corruption, graft, and blackmail. America is a federation of liberal republics, and it's damn well time it started acting like it for once in its history.

My technique consisted of : pick a number, say 10. You can smoke a cigarette every 10 mins. The catch is you have to smoke it. Then everyday add 10 mins between cigs. Time passes quickly and before you know it you're down to maybe a few cigs per day. Much easier way to quit better then a patch and cheaper.

401 When i first got into good pot in college (CA hydro vs VA ditch), i felt this internal vibration i could only describe as Brownian motion. It was cool but i eventually acclimated to it. Then after 12 years in the mil when i could get high again, there it was for a little while. It is true that if you do a lot of pot often, your CB-1 receptors desensitize until you stop for awhile. But when they're not desensed, such a wonderful feeling. God created marijuana for us to enjoy its magnificense.

435 Registered sex offender jumps elementary school fence, attempts to sexually assault student in restroom
https://tinyurl.com/5hywvbxj

A registered sex offender was arrested after allegedly attempting to sexually assault a 10-year-old girl inside McAuliffe Elementary School in Riverside Friday, police said. Logan Nighswonger, 32, was being held without bail at the Robert Presley Detention Center for attempted sex acts with a child under the age of 10 and being a registered sex offender on school grounds.

Riverside police were called to the elementary school, located in the 4100 block of Golden Avenue, around 12:30 p.m. Friday after receiving a report that a man had jumped the school fence and entered the girls' restroom.

"A campus supervisor observed this man, later identified as Logan Nighswonger, come out of the restroom and heard a girl crying inside," police said in a news release. "The campus supervisor followed Nighswonger as he jumped other fences to the parking lot and get inside a vehicle. He was then able to provide a detailed vehicle description and license plate as the suspect drove away."

The thing that scares me is that despite the weak, largely ceremonial role of governor, any D who manages to turn out the CA, IL, NY, NJ immigrant vote in the deep blue cities of Texas will likely pull off a "Biden" and go full totalitarian dictatorship, wildly exceeding any authority of the office, and will get away with it because no one will stop him.

Donks don't care if they land in Brooklyn or parts of Manhattan, but drop them in the Hamptons or Water MIll or Sagaponeck, and you have a different story. Also the preppy school towns are a nice spot, IYAM

485 Humanity has had that shit figured out since the days of painting dicks and boobs on cave walls."

For four centuries until it was torn down in the 15th century, the gate into the Italian city of Milan, visitors entered beneath the Port Tosa (Door of the Shaving Lady) which is a large carving of a woman shaving her pubes.

How long before some of our major cities (starting with Vegas?) do that?

486 Doing well. She is impatient with the recovery process, but there was no sepsis or anything alarming. She worked a half-day, but realized she needs to ease back into things.

Yeah. There are several post-operative considerations, healing of 'stitches', adhesions. From personal experience, I can only council patience.

488 Romeo.. prayers up for your son. This is my biggest fear. My stupid kids took that damn thing willingly.
Posted by: jewells45 at August 22, 2022 09:52 PM (nxdel)

My sons did as well, but not necessarily willingly. But they did not do the boosters. Mrs. Mahon did as well, but it was because of corporate pressure.

My company never, not once, pressured us to get the shot. They did have to follow the county face diaper and quarantine procedures. But, never any pressure. One of the reasons I like where I work.
