First-World Problems...

SumpPump44.jpg

Yes folks, that is a sump, with a pump. A made-in-America sump pump that is so ridiculously powerful that I am concerned about how fast the cycles are!

And why is it made in America? Because the last one -- the Chinese one -- failed. And of course, as you and I and Murphy know quite well, things like that fail only at the worst possible moments.

But this really isn't a problem...first or second or even third world! Because the damned thing works like a champ, and the only minor issue is that the overflow vent spits a bit of water out of the reservoir. But even I, the grand poobah of trivial issues, can't get too exercised about that!

Oh...what about in the event of a power failure? Hah! I have two deep-discharge marine batteries hooked up to an inverter, so in the event of a blackout I will still have loads of power available to this beast to pump out the sump. My calculations give me about 100 one minute cycles, and at 60 gallons/minute? I think I am okay!

Yes...I am scraping the bottom of the First World Problems barrel, but sometimes it's important to lean back, smell the roses, eat the oysters and cauliflower, and enjoy living in the greatest country on earth.

So see you next week. I promise I will have something genuinely awful!

6 LOL. After years of harassment from the university, eight fraternities at USC disaffiliated from USC and became wholly private organizations.

The university is not happy.

USC strongly criticized the move to disaffiliate and invite first-year students to rush, saying in a statement that such fall recruitment "has been repeatedly shown to be unsafe for new students." The university, which stripped the breakaway fraternities of the right to use the USC name, logo or campus Greek life resources, also asserted they were "chafing at procedures and protocols designed to prevent sexual assault and drug abuse and deal with issues of mental health and underage drinking."

The university has posted a prominent warning against the breakaway fraternities on the campus Greek life portal:

"The following groups are NOT AFFILIATED with USC. They are not subject to oversight by university staff, and have elected to forgo support resources and other benefits provided to recognized student groups. Some groups are undertaking unauthorized recruitment. Students are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to not join or affiliate with these organizations."

Speaking of, go right now and put bleach a bleach solution in your home's air conditioner's condensate pump. Let it get up to a water level where the switch activates the pump. Then do it three or four more times.

Trust me on this. They's algae in there, and one day you'll come home to standing water or wet carpet because the float is obstructed. Hopefully it won't happen while you're away on vacation.

Lots of folks are able to have one drain directly into a way out, but other installations require it to be pumped up and out or over to a drain.

---------------------

Even if your AC condensate discharge runs directly to a floor drain, the drain line is prone to algae/mold formation that can cause clogging. It's good practice to run bleach solution through the entire line periodically,. starting as close as possible to the discharge connection from the AC evaporator coil.

Turn it off. Get a big ice chest. Salvage the food as best can.

Break out the hair dryer.

Make sure all the ice is gone. Turn the thing on and see if it works okay.

The little fan that blows the cold air from the freezer got blocked. The fridge part was not cold. There was ice on the coils. There is never supposed to ice on the coils. Periodically, the coils are heated to melt the ice. Didn't happen. Ice formed.

I went out and bought a big ice chest. Put lots of stuff in it. Turned off the fridge. Used the hair dryer to melt the ice.

Turned it back on and it's been great since (over 3 years).

123 @9 Chatterbox Mouse-The Mitsubishi steam generators at San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant did not have a failure due to Chinese manufactured parts, China had nothing to do with that.
What you will not or have not heard is that the steam generator/turbine which is a 550ton piece of equipment was dropped 3 feet when it was being loaded for transportation. The "tubes" in this thing as far as my source informed me were damaged. They tried to find damage to the tubes which was near impossible. They rolled the dice, installed the generator. Didn't take long to figure out they had a problem "harmonic vibrations" and lack of tube "elasticity". For us laymen, there was probably cracked welds at tube heads and the plant, that was slated to be shuttered at a later date, was shutdown prematurely.

.....and now you know the rest of the story.

128 The new thing is SuperConferences. This was brokered by ESPN who are trying to take over college football completely.

Phase 1 bring all of the big schools into 2 or three "conferences" with 18-20 schools.

Phase 2 "realize" that the conferences are too big and unmanageable.

Phase 3 kick out all of the little schools to get them back to 10-12.

Did you guys notice that this happened immediately after they said that players could get paid and transfer indefinitely without any wait time. Basically, football players don't need to go to class any more.

College football is no more. They are trying to be the new NFL. They totally forgot how important tradition is to college football.

Rope handle on the center rail? Where the track or door chain is? If so it might just need "snapped" back in place.
The rope pull is designed to disengage the door from the chain drive. If you push the door button and the motor runs but the door wont move, it's likely the issue.

Multiple "clean" dishes were visibly dirty. It was uncomfortably warm and dank, presumably in an effort to cheap out on the electric bill. When that house eventually burns down, it's going to be because of the many electrical issues, and as I wasn't under contract to do any electrical work for the owner, there was not much I could really do. I did a few things, correcting the most immediately dangerous issues.

We survived. We saved, and we eventually bought a house with modern wiring! All the outlets in the house are properly grounded! There are no swapped hot/neutrals anywhere! It was just such a relief to get out of that place.

150 Re: siding. We used to live in a small condo community and replaced our wood siding with Hardiplank. I would highly recommend it. Fire-resistant, critter-resistant (a problem with our old, aging siding next to a greenbelt) and even some noise abatement and insulation value. May need repainting if you paint it a custom color as we did.

Not cheap though.

1. More expensive than a lot of other options
2. Light and easy for 1 person to position and nail it
3. Cuts easy
4. Primed so painting was easy
5. Softer cellular wood expands and contracts with the weather. I didn't want those ugly gaps that other engineered siding systems insist you put in because they cant absorb moisture expansion.

Depends on what is under your vinyl siding. The major issue with all siding work, including hardiplank, is improper installation.

Ideally, in a humid and somewhat rainy area, you should have a rainscreen design to allow the siding to dry from the backside because you do not want to trap moisture there. There are a variety of ways to place a rainscreen between the siding and the sheathing.

OB Opdyke makes the premier solution but getting your installer to use it and install it properly can be an issue. Old style heavy tarpaper can also work but it has to be done correctly. Tyvek and various other housewraps are less good solutions but can work with greater overhang areas where the siding hardly ever gets wet.

Depending on the existing siding/sheathing beneath the vinyl, you may have to do a tearoff of the existing sheathing. LP Smartside is the middle option to T11 (where the skill of the painter and quality of paint makes a huge difference--frankly spray jobs suck but are cheap due to labor costs).

Woodpeckers destroyed the side of our house in Connecticut. We had cedar shingles and they absolutely loved the sound of that stuff trying to attract a girlfriend. I tried nets, plastic owls and ultra sound stuff and nothing would keep them off the side of the house pecking huge holes in the shingles.

I finally went with pepper spray. I would hear them hammering the side of the house and I would sneak out of the basement door and come around the corner of the house and spray them. They finally left us alone and I replaced the shingles on that side of the house.

Posted by: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at August 21, 2022 03:59 PM (PiwSw)

164 The major issue that I have seen with Hardiplank is installation--you do want to go with a premier installer. The second is that even Hardiplank needs to be ventilated to get rid of moisture on the back side of it which can cause product deterioration over time and mold issues. Most installers want to use housewrap which is an inferior substitute. Hardi (and its competitors nichi something or other or the inferior plygem variety) are also heavy and require sheathing and proper distancing of studs to hang it. Depending on what is under the vinyl, you might have to add the expense of tearoff and replacement.

168 Cedar is a very nice siding product as long as you keep it up. It is best under wide overhangs of the roof as the oils in the cedar under direct sunlight dissipate quicker under direct sunlight. Eventually, some sort of stain is necessary--the more translucent, the shorter the period to reapply. A good quality solid stain can last about double on cedar siding.

The cedar siding on our house is about 40-50 years old and we just went through rejuvenation of it.

Asbestos siding is the champ for long lasting and insulation value as it simply does not transfer heat very well. Just don't grind on it or otherwise put it into the air and keep paint on it and it will outlast the wood structure probably.

175 Vinyl siding doesn't have the most high end look, but an expert installer can make it look very good. I put it on my now 30 year old house and have had zero problems, it still looks like new. I hate exterior painting. I've been gradually replacing wood trim with PVC to reduce maintenance even further. The stuff never rots and holds paint like crazy.

176 B&S lawnmower engine update: Top cover, air filter box, and fuel line from gas tank are all off. Crud cleaned off of parts and they are drying / airing out. I have the full metal carb, not the newer plastic one. I used throttle body cleaner spray to clean up the carb intake and butterfly and have lubed the butterfly linkage. Fuel hose is not blocked, neither are the fuel tank and carb spouts where the hose attaches.

Next will do a final wipe down then reassembly, then refill gas and give 'er a test.
