West was a contemporary of Franklin--an American from Philly, working in England. This painting demonstrates how quickly legends spread. I like the little genii. Franklin was *so great,* he couldn't settle from one genius. He had to have several. Perhaps representing his different interests?

the pointed lightning rod conductor, also called a lightning attractor or Franklin rod, was invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1752 as part of his groundbreaking exploration of electricity. Although not the first to suggest a correlation between electricity and lightning, Franklin was the first to propose a workable system for testing his hypothesis.[6] Franklin speculated that, with an iron rod sharpened to a point, "The electrical fire would, I think, be drawn out of a cloud silently, before it could come near enough to strike." Franklin speculated about lightning rods for several years before his reported kite experiment.

Meh, West left Pennsylvania for London and never came back because he was so enamored with the Brits. The painting of Wolfe is largely a commissioned piece, with I believe all but one person were not even at the battle. The attempt to make Wolfe look 'Christ-like" is even more distasteful. IMVHO.
By the way, both generals (Montcalm and Wolfe) died at The Battle of Quebec. Wolfe got three new musket ball holes on his body and Montcalm took one just below the ribs. Posted by: Marcus T at August 19, 2022 09:57 AM (VpIIl) 175

Realistically, for a metaanalysis, you would need a lot more polling samples at the same time than what they have. Watch for the change in polling screens from adult voters, to registered voters, to likely voters to happen soon as voting registration deadlines pass (about 30-60 days before an election for most states). The Democrats are clearly out fundraising Republicans and a lot of that is small donations. Again, that doesn't equate with popularity and with all other factors considered (the economy, crime, etc.) but its is worth a pause. The fact that people like McConnell and his coterie of Vichy Republicans are clearly working against the electorate and their primary choices presages at a minimum, subversion, at a maximum, a surrender. The senate fund (see above on our lack of funding) is important, and McConnell has weaponized that against candidates who will give us a majority. It also appears the GOP is once again totally unprepared for the shenanigans about to come. I think the story may change once people come back in September, but this isn't going to be the cake walk (nor should the GOP continue to treat it as one). I have massive respect for him as a historian. Is this mere trolling, or is there something to it? Posted by: Zombie Robbo -------------------------- Trolling. One of Franklin's office help in France was a British agent and he passed information on to London. Franklin appeared very careless in informational security in Paris BUT in a larger sense, Franklin did not keep tight security because he wanted the British to be anxious and fretful about the French. Shipping information during the age of sail was simply not that useful because the information went stale before you could use it due to lags in information gathering, distribution, and processing. Posted by: Marcus T ---------- The campaigns are out of the control of the NRSC, which is what is pissing off McConnell. The MAGA candidates who won are executing independent of the DC consultants. McCarthy would like to lose some seats, like MI-03 and WA-03, but despite his best efforts he probably can't lose them. The voters are too energized against the establishment to make fundraising the definitive issue that it usually is. There are only 4-5 seats that are actually in play; GA, AZ, NV, PA, and maybe NH. In the first four of those the Senate campaigns are driving themselves without help needed from the national GOP. Now McCarthy has purposely lost a couple seats, like CA-13. But where the MAGA candidates won the primary, his ability to sabatoge is limited. Also note how quickly Lake was on top of any possible election fraud. The campaigns themselves are not asleep. I personally don't think the GOP has learned enough to see the signs of fraud, act quickly on those signs and ultimately prevail. I do see signs that the left has learned how to cheat with greater success and has pulled more of the legal players into their corner. I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised to see a significant number of races that were more or less "red" to flip "blue" and reduce the Republican pick ups to an meaningless number. I personally don't think the GOP has learned enough to see the signs of fraud, act quickly on those signs and ultimately prevail. I do see signs that the left has learned how to cheat with greater success and has pulled more of the legal players into their corner.
Posted by: Martini Farmer ---------------------- The cheat machine doesn't work that well outside of urban areas which is why increasingly GOP is dominating state and local races outside of those areas. Makes it hard to jigger House races because there simply is not enough information and there is not the insulation that Soros type prosecutors give in urban districts. Identifying the ballot mules via GPS locating is also a key way to stop the cheat. @388: "... virus propagation in a population is a good candidate for modeling ..."
Eh, maybe in a general sense, but once you start factoring in specific vectors of transmission -- reducing flights from here to there does this, closing schools does that, summer and winter trends in specific regions multiply things by how much, etc. -- then it goes sideways just as quickly as AGW modeling. Most researchers just aren't very clever once they begin juggling more than a precious few variables. Posted by: Walter Freeman at August 19, 2022 10:41 AM (bM7vb) 419

She said she is doing well cognitively, but she is having flashbacks in her sleep in which she sees a large flash of light and wakes up with the feeling her heart is blown out of her chest. She said she is trying to deal with knowing the other people died, said she thinks of them every day. The fact she is alive is amazing.

-presence, concentration and variability of all gases in a system the size of earth (which is also an open system) -the sun is the biggest source of radiation (and therefore heat) but is not constant. Got to model it's output. -loss of gases from atmosphere to space -competing processes that consume gases, from humans, to all wildlife, to trees -how much heat is produced by the earth itself? -gas production that is not biological in nature but is the release from volcanoes, geysers, hot springs, etc -oh, I forgot to mention, a lot of gas production and consumption takes place under water by biologicals, have to model all of them in every stream, pond, lake, and the oceans -how does the incident radiation (the sun) affect the competing processes from the biological contributions? -etc -etc Posted by: Aetius451AD Johnson at August 19, 2022 10:58 AM (dNqv+) Posted by: Lady in Black at August 19, 2022 10:59 AM (sVtYq) 519

-------------------- The GOPe formula for electoral success is stand for nothing, issue platitudes, pick rich corporatist types like Loeffler to run, and run low energy competitions that demotivate voters. Their campaign consultants and party apparatus are designed around such things. That is also where the wait your turn and other such obnoxious practices are used by state parties to stifle outsiders. The typical commission to a campaign consultant for running GOTV campaigns with volunteers is about 8-10 percent of money spent. You get a lot more in commissions from ad placements, direct mailers, and robocalling. That is why GOP campaign consultants avoid GOTV--it costs them personally and is a hassle compared with dealing with GOPe vendors of services. Posted by: whig at August 19, 2022 11:00 AM (CXr4y) 525

So I don't want to oversell what is coming.
If McConnell and McCarthy were fully engaged and trying to win, we would be looking at a historic win in the house. Over 260 Republicans. Because McCarthy is trying to lose some seats, the ones he thinks are going to give him problems as leader (e.g. MI-03), the victory in 2022 will be less, something like 250 Republican seats. But even that is more than he would like. In his ideal world he would end up with a 10 seat majority, and blame the reduced number on Trump. McConnell has less control over throwing Senate seats, and will end up with a 2-3 seat majority no matter what he does. He is going to lose allies in MO, OH, and NC and there is not a damn thing he can do about it. But voter enthusiasm is so high, that this is outside of their control. Usually, they can get what they want by controlling the money. McCarthy has never returned Gibbs call in MI-03 and would like to see Gibbs lose if possible. Problem is the voters have a different agenda, and they know about this money game too. Wyoming GOP votes in 2018 - 116,000, 2022 - 171,000, 47% increase in turnout. "The typical commission to a campaign consultant for running GOTV campaigns with volunteers is about 8-10 percent of money spent. You get a lot more in commissions from ad placements, direct mailers, and robocalling. That is why GOP campaign consultants avoid GOTV--it costs them personally and is a hassle compared with dealing with GOPe vendors of services.
Posted by: whig at August 19, 2022 11:00 AM (CXr4y)" And that's why I despise Rona McDaniel, Trumps favorite eGOP toady. She's done zero to change that, or any of the other GOTV fundamentals. It's all "technology". How about get off your fat ass and go press flesh, jackass. Voter engagement is where the rubber meets the road. Posted by: Marcus T at August 19, 2022 11:04 AM (VF4WI) 541
Franklin was writing to a friend, Cadwallader Coldon. He cited eight reasons why older women were preferred. His last point was "8th and lastly, they are so grateful!" https://tinyurl.com/theyaresograteful "Cadwallader" - there's a name just pining for a comeback. There is an argument that the "real" universe we exist in is only a surface of a much greater dimensionality, but it is not well considered since it seems so much like Hinduism's concept of Maya

Dark matter theory seems to be cut from the same cloth. Just so you know, I'm speaking as a cynical layman, not a subject matter expert or even physics hobbyist. I've got $2.50 that the app is way, WAY behind actual inflation.
Fair enough. It's probably working off of 2021 data at best. If roll it back to 2020, it says $69.62. That's probably a more reliable number. Posted by: Oddbob at August 19, 2022 11:09 AM (nfrXX) 545
You can model historical trends, sure- of various points in the things affecting temp (assuming you do not try to tweak that historical data to fit your perception)- but that is of virtually of no value in predicting outcomes in an open system.
I consider myself a fairly smart guy (probably a faulty assumption.) I am good at solving problems (except women.) However, I know that systematizing problem solving is flattering myself in that I 'Understand' a system. Understanding is always a progressive thing. It improves (and can also go down if you start going down a false path.) In the end, it often comes down to the inspiration/gut feeling route to find a solution. IN NO WAY do I think I am smart enough to even try to find a solution to something like AGW guys are making because I would instantly be thinking of all of the things I am NOT thinking of. You do not touch shit like that unless people are actually dying. These people are so stupid, they cannot even grasp the infinite amount of shit that they do not know. I would like to add Tim Scott(E-SC) to the list. He has shown his proclivity to suck establishment penis when it's presented to him.
