AoSHQ Jukebox Cafe

This is a general purpose music thread.

Just for nostalgia, I'm listing some of the songs I remember charting on the Aceboard Top 100 charts. But you don't have to talk about any of those if you don't want.

Stop being such a mealy-mouthed
soyboy beta cvck bitch,
and start the countdown!

Okay Johnny Coldcuts, I'm getting to that. I can't remember it very clearly. This is stuff from almost 20 years ago.

From long ago: Beatallica, a band that combines the Beatles and Metallica. This is "The Thing That Should Not Let It Be."

I think Senator Jack tipped me to these guys. Here's another one, my favorite, I think: "For Horsemen."

I was really into The Darkness' "I Believe in a Thing Called Love" when it came out in 2003. Though I don't think I became aware of it until 2004.

At the start of the Iraq War, I was very into Outkast's "Bombs Over Baghdad." I linked it a lot. I was younger then. Not quite nearly 29.

I think I wound up linking Outkast's "Hey Ya" a few times. There's a little cameo there. The guy introducing the band is Ryan Phillippe. Who I've heard might be, you know. One of us.

That was from 2003, but that's another one I don't remember hearing until 2004 or so.

I was absolutely obsessed with this song in 2005. I know I posted about it, and I listened to incessantly for a three month period:

Almost sixty million views on YouTube alone.

These sexy ladies delivered what might be the second-most popular "Ace Song."

I remember that one!
It still pulses in my large German brusten!

Benny Mardones' "Into the Night" charted briefly on the blog, owing to the fact that it contains the stupidest lyric in all of pop music.

This doesn't count as a song, exactly, but commenters have linked and linked and linked this demonstration of how half the big pop rock songs you know are built on the same four chords, I, II, iv, VI.

I don't want to blame LauraW for this one, but it is my memory -- possibly wrong -- that LauraW foisted this song on the blog, "(Let Me) Smell Yo' D*ck." It's a charming number about a woman who suspects her boyfriend is cheating on her, and so requests that he let her smell... well I don't want to give it all away.

LauraW definitely dropped this one on the blog: Cee Lo's "F*** You." That was from 2010.

I know I posted this one a lot in reference to Obama's excuses: Shaggy's "It Wasn't Me."

The last song I pushed on the blog was this one. I was an early adopter of these chicks.

They showed off their legs in this performance at Lollapalooza (they're still doing that?) at the end of July.

I can't remember any more. Can any of you?

Well, I can remember one more: A little song of encouragement for a cat named Brandon.

I should give a special mention to this guy, although I don't remember playing many of his songs.

Here's the thing he's really Blog-Famous for: "The Guys Get Shirts." As "visualized" by some people pretending to be part of the Paul Anka band.

The guys get shirts!
What a call-back!
Makes me want to dance a pirate jig!

I think that was a cover of a song originally done by Doris Day.

63 The Darkness has produced some absolute bangers. They had three great albums (I think, I'm no musicologist), of which that song is just one (and one of the lesser ones, imo) of a bunch of rollicking tunes. Then Justin Hawkins went on a coke bender and the band fell went on hiatus. Then they came back and fuck me if they don't still rock. The last 80s style glam band (I hear, I didn't go to school for this shit).

OK Go is some good times, even without the music videos. "I Won't Let You Down" is a terrific pop tune in its own right. The hundreds of choreographed teenage Japanese schoolgirls barely figure into it a bunch.

188 Speaking of blues, Fat Possum was doing some remixes of their blues artists to try and draw more consumers in. They're an interesting bunch. They wanted to make moeny, of course, but they wanted to be sure the performers were making money while they were alive, too. And they tried to figure out how to make that happen with the understanding that there were only so many blues purists out there, and they couldn't make their elderly, often impoverished musicians the money they needed to make.

There were some pretty interesting things to come out of it:

249 I don't care for Charles. He has always struck me as kind of a douche.

His main issue is climate change, and his Queen Consort was literally his consort when he was adultering around on his beloved first wife.

It's pretty hard to respect all that. I know very little about the royals, though it seems the Queen would have been better served skipping Charles and giving the succession to William and Katherine if that were possible.

In any event I wish him well and will miss the Queen; she was a good woman with a ton of heart who spent a long, full lifetime in service of her nation.

Growing up has nothing to do with it, sadly. He's always been an insufferable, jealous, simple minded fool. There's no reason to believe that he can change those innate tendencies just because a rainbow appeared or whatever.

My guess is that it's an act to make what comes next more palatable to the masses.

See also: "I am not joking when I say this … if you ever work with me and I hear you treat another colleague with disrespect … talk down to someone, I promise you I will fire you on the spot … on the spot. No ifs, ands, or buts,” - Joe Biden

385 Monarchies are like every other form of aristocratic, heredity based social system, at least since aristos stopped whacking at each other with swords. Humans aren't animals, and you can't breed them for leadership. The percentage of good leaders is the same in aristos and non-aristos. The difference is that non-aristos don't get PLACED in positions of power.

412 Without getting into the whole monarchy thing, which is boring and silly given the practical circumstances of how constitutional monarchs in the UK and Japan for example generally behave, I actually do find it sort of nice that US flags will be lowered for Elizabeth.

Even more so because this country was born in rebellion against that throne. But in the 250 years since, and especially the last 100, the countries' relationship evolved along with the world situation, to where their key shared virtues and culture made them allies in some of the noblest causes.

I am the last who needs reminding that the glorious shared virtues norms and values are perhaps at their most tattered and endangered state in history - on both sides of the Atlantic. But Elizabeth reigned during much of the period where the "special relationship" was often indeed that, and for the good (for everyone). So this unprecedented gesture of respect hits a good nerve - even if that nerve mostly has stimulus from only history and nostalgia these days.

Meghan and Harry tried to pull something with the Queen's death that really pissed them. They just announced they were travelling to Balmoral to their press people.

They didn't tell Chuckles and the rest of them, or try to coordinate. Well, they put a stop to that quick, and made it clear under no circumstance was Meggie coming anywhere near Balmoral.

They let Harry come by himself, but made him make his own travel arrangements. He had to fly in to the closest airport, then drive himself there.

Wonderful to hear the several speakers proclaim themselves as Christian and speak of Es deep faith in Jesus Christ. After the service was over, Martha McCallums British guest was asked about Charles speech particularly Harry and Meghan. Noted that Charles did not refer to them with the titles they still hold. Guest called Meghan an “ petulant American B actress “ and said 65% of GB wants them fully stripped of all titles which would pull all their funding. Thinks Charles will do it and move on.

When I spent a semester and then a summer over there a long time ago, I noticed that it was the uni-educated posh lefty types that wanted a Republic, sneered at the Royals and so forth. The working class blokes and women you talked to in pubs loved the Queen Mum and the Queen (weren't crazy about other members of the family). A Yank talking trash about their Queen in those pubs might have ended up with a few missing teeth.

504 I'm happy to be an American, but I like the fact that the Brits have a monarchy. It would be different if they still actually had political power - but now that they don't, what they do is embody tradition, a particular culture and a unifying figure for the country. Leftists who are quick to scold others for "cultural appropriation" or for criticizing aspects of say, black inner city culture or Islamic culture, have no problems criticizing the Brits and moaning about all the money spent maintaining the monarchy. I'm glad the Brits do pomp and ceremony so well. I'm glad I don't have to pay for the Royals, but if they don't mind, it's none of my damn business. I think they're willing to pay because they know England wouldn't quite be England without the Royals.

It's certain to come up again in days to come, so nobody's missing much. Charles is not lazy. WSJ had an article some time ago on his actual "work" while he was P of W, and although it was all new-agey, he made a lot of money. He was a good manager of Crown ventures, and got up a firm to make and sell organic food-related goods that brings in millions of pounds a year. OTOH, he's just about as honest in business as the other green CEO's, and has been, over the decades, criticised and investigated for things like tax avoidance and exerting unfair competitive advantage.

But he is wealthy in his own right, not just on allowance, and may pick up some of his Davos CEO attitude by hanging around with a lot of Davos CEO colleagues. Interesting prep work for kingin'.
