Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Not a Recession: New York State Manufacturing Index Falls Into a Major Contraction, The Worst Collapse Since 9/11The price of gas is falling. Because the price of energy always falls when economic activity falls off a cliff. When the factories are working partial hours, and the trucks are shipping fewer shipments, yeah, the demand for energy is going to fall. This is not the way you want to cause the price of energy to fall, though.New York Empire State factory gauge plunges in August deep into contraction territory General conditions index drops 42 points to negative 31.3 -- the second largest decline on recordUnexpectedly! They expected it to fall to positive 5.0. Instead if plummeted to negative 31.3. Any reading below zero indicates deteriorating conditions. Key details: The index for new orders dropped 35.8 points to negative 29.6 in August. The shipments index fell 49.4 points to negative 24.1. Unfilled orders fell for the third straight month. Labor market conditions weakened. The prices-paid index fell 9 points to 55.5, its lowest level in over a year. In addition, manufacturers were not optimistic about the six-month outlook. Big picture: Economists were expecting a small retreat in the factory index, not a rout. The U.S. manufacturing sector, which was a strength during the recovery from the pandemic, is facing a steep drop-off in new business. The New York data, and a similar reading from the Philadelphia Fed, are seen as early indicators for the health of the factory sector in August. I can't find the numbers for the Philadelphia's manufacturing index for August, but in July, they expected it fall to zero. Unexpectedly, it fell to negative 12.3. "The index for new orders declined for the second consecutive month, from -12.4 to -24.8." Why do liberal Wall Street analysts always massively miss in their predictions, missing high when their beloved Democrats are in office and on the downside when the hated Republicans are in office? I guess I answered my question. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)Posted by: kallisto at August 15, 2022 03:31 PM (dCxaZ) 2

Another reason gas prices have fallen, slightly, is Biden has been raiding the national oil reserve which is now at it's lowest level in years. Trump filled it when oil was cheap. Biden, if he even attempts to refill it, will do so when oil is much more expensive.

++++ Sort of, I think. IIRC how this index works, any reading below zero indicates contraction. Going from +50 to +30 to +10 to +2 shows "deteriorating conditions" because the growth is slowing, but it's still positive. A crash to -30 is a big, big move into contraction. This post is dangerous disinformation.
A Democrat President is not responsible for rising gas prices but must be credited if they fall. A Democrat President is not responsible for a bad economy but must be credited if it improves. A decrease in the rate of inflation month-to-month under a Democrat President is counted as zero percent inflation. Any economy under 5% positive GDP under a Republican President is the worst economy in 50 years. Two quarters of negative GDP under a Democrat President is "signs of growth." You have been reported. Both the NY and Philly numbers indicate an industrial recession, as did the GDP print from Q2, which showed huge declines in fixed investment.
The St. Louis Fed data (which only goes as far as June for most of the data points) is showing things holding up a bit better, because that's national data rather than regional data - but even in the St. Louis dataset, total industrial production has been declining slightly since April. Not big moves, but moves in the wrong direction. Between total production from the St. Louis Fed and the Empire State and Philly industrial indices, it looks like a manufacturing sector recession is upon us, especially if the themes hold for the next few months. On August 2, 2022, Kingston, New York became the first Upstate city to adopt rent control.
It is a tragedy. Kingston used to be home of one of the best IBM plants in the country. Strong middle class workers buoyed the local economy and filled the public schools with children of smart, hard-working parents. But Mario Cuomo hated IBM because they were successful. He targeted them with taxes and drove them out of New York. Now, Kingston is a shithole city with rent control and "safe rooms" where addicts can inject themselves in a safe environment. Progress. Sodium hypochlorite only lasts 12 months past the date of manufacture.
Calcium hypochlorite only lasts 24 months past the date of manufacture. The pills you get in bottles have expiration dates on them, but they don't last nearly as long as you'd think. Also, the water needs to be fairly clear for it to work. Turbid water or water with growth in it requires a much higher dose than what's in the directions. Gas prices have not fallen because Biden released oil from strategic reserves. Gas prices have fallen because many of the refineries east coast to west have completed annual shutdowns/mainainence, a lot of it that was put off because of covid over the last two years. Many in my trade that chase refinery shutdown overtime $$$ literally followed work east to west. Ended here in the Bay Area and Long Beach end of July. You can probably track the prices falling regionally just by following refinery shutdowns.

Big Ramen is making a move on the market to try to force us into a recession.
The old Wall Street saying is "When the economy is shot, Ramen's hot." Posted by: Bitter Clinger at August 15, 2022 04:07 PM (/Uk31) ++++ Ramen is a classic Giffen Good, and yeah, the old Wall Street saying is true. (Giffen Goods are one of two categories of goods that violate the rules of supply and demand, in that demand rises as prices increase. The reason is that these are special goods. They are always inferior goods that usually have small or moderate baseline demand but get more popular - out of necessity - when real incomes are under serious pressure. When you lose your job or inflation hits you and you can no longer afford what you want - say, eggs or meat or fancy mac and cheese - you still need to eat and will buy the inferior good, even if it clocks in at a higher price. Higher demand activity in Giffen Goods is another recession indicator.) Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 15, 2022 04:19 PM (WWh8n) 379

++++ Right. Demand for Veblen goods increases with price because those goods are status markers for the hyper-rich class. For example to those who are curious: Bugatti might sell, say, 1000 cars at a million bucks each but they'll sell 1500 cars at two million bucks each. The car - and its price tag - is the point of the exercise. People rich enough to afford either will *prefer* to spend more because it's a bigger marker. This happens in various markets depending on predilections and who the person is trying to impress. It's rampant in the Hi-Fi "audiophile" community, for another example. I remember hearing the Rainier cherry crop was hit by drought or bugs or some issue and was in short supply. My grocery store was selling 1 lb bags for around $15. I declined

Number of mentions of this Appleand Google and Yahoo news? Zero
////// I forget the percentage, but it's a shockingly high number of people who get their news from FB and Twitter. === I lived through the Reagan years. The news was only on three channels that's all you got. Every single night they told everyone it was awful. It was for like a year. Then everybody you knew was getting a job in years 2-4. It got to be completely absurd. People experience economic reality directly. They can gaslight people on wars and foreign policy. But as somebody said, its the economy stupid. Because you can't fool people. When its bad its bad. When its good its good. Posted by: word to the wise at August 15, 2022 04:48 PM (b02yR) 540
@424 Video shows Shanghai shoppers scramble to break out of Ikea store after snap lockdown announced.
---- Video blog (The China Show) I was watching on YouTube mentioned that the moment the Shanghai lockdown order was lifted just recently, a bunch of Shanghai residents went on vacation to Hainan. And then Hainan got hit with lockdown orders. Posted by: junior at August 15, 2022 04:49 PM (aqgsz) 541
