Not a Recession: New York State Manufacturing Index Falls Into a Major Contraction, The Worst Collapse Since 9/11

The price of gas is falling.

Because the price of energy always falls when economic activity falls off a cliff.

When the factories are working partial hours, and the trucks are shipping fewer shipments, yeah, the demand for energy is going to fall.

This is not the way you want to cause the price of energy to fall, though.

New York Empire State factory gauge plunges in August deep into contraction territory

General conditions index drops 42 points to negative 31.3 -- the second largest decline on record

The numbers: The New York Fed's Empire State business conditions index, a gauge of manufacturing activity in the state, plummeted 42.4 points to negative 31.3 in August, the regional Fed bank said Monday.

This is the second largest monthly decline on record and among the lowest levels in the survey's history, the regional Fed bank said.

Economists had expected a reading of 5.0, according to a survey by The Wall Street Journal.

Unexpectedly!

They expected it to fall to positive 5.0. Instead if plummeted to negative 31.3.

Any reading below zero indicates deteriorating conditions.

Key details: The index for new orders dropped 35.8 points to negative 29.6 in August.

The shipments index fell 49.4 points to negative 24.1.

Unfilled orders fell for the third straight month.

Labor market conditions weakened. The prices-paid index fell 9 points to 55.5, its lowest level in over a year.

In addition, manufacturers were not optimistic about the six-month outlook.

Big picture: Economists were expecting a small retreat in the factory index, not a rout. The U.S. manufacturing sector, which was a strength during the recovery from the pandemic, is facing a steep drop-off in new business.

The New York data, and a similar reading from the Philadelphia Fed, are seen as early indicators for the health of the factory sector in August.

I can't find the numbers for the Philadelphia's manufacturing index for August, but in July, they expected it fall to zero.

Unexpectedly, it fell to negative 12.3.

"The index for new orders declined for the second consecutive month, from -12.4 to -24.8."

Why do liberal Wall Street analysts always massively miss in their predictions, missing high when their beloved Democrats are in office and on the downside when the hated Republicans are in office?

I guess I answered my question.

Sort of, I think. IIRC how this index works, any reading below zero indicates contraction. Going from +50 to +30 to +10 to +2 shows "deteriorating conditions" because the growth is slowing, but it's still positive.

A crash to -30 is a big, big move into contraction.

Who could have foreseen shuttering the economy for almost two years would have consequences? I agree with you, to be clear. As much as doesn't want to do so, Powell has no other alternative than to hike rates, too, come September and possibly once or twice more. I don't even pretend to understand the oil market or supply chain. It's crazy shit. Much more complex than most commodities. I've tried to learn about it, but it was more effort than I care to make.

But it doesn't take a huge, pulsating brain to figure out that a decrease in price of a very inelastic good without an increase in supplies can be attributed to a severe fall-off in demand across the economy.

A Democrat President is not responsible for rising gas prices but must be credited if they fall.
A Democrat President is not responsible for a bad economy but must be credited if it improves.
A decrease in the rate of inflation month-to-month under a Democrat President is counted as zero percent inflation.
Any economy under 5% positive GDP under a Republican President is the worst economy in 50 years.
Two quarters of negative GDP under a Democrat President is "signs of growth."

126 Both the NY and Philly numbers indicate an industrial recession, as did the GDP print from Q2, which showed huge declines in fixed investment.

The St. Louis Fed data (which only goes as far as June for most of the data points) is showing things holding up a bit better, because that's national data rather than regional data - but even in the St. Louis dataset, total industrial production has been declining slightly since April. Not big moves, but moves in the wrong direction.

Between total production from the St. Louis Fed and the Empire State and Philly industrial indices, it looks like a manufacturing sector recession is upon us, especially if the themes hold for the next few months.

142 On August 2, 2022, Kingston, New York became the first Upstate city to adopt rent control.

It is a tragedy.

Kingston used to be home of one of the best IBM plants in the country. Strong middle class workers buoyed the local economy and filled the public schools with children of smart, hard-working parents.

But Mario Cuomo hated IBM because they were successful. He targeted them with taxes and drove them out of New York.

Now, Kingston is a shithole city with rent control and "safe rooms" where addicts can inject themselves in a safe environment.

Progress.

Yeah, it's *huge.* If next month shows major surging expansion, then it was probably a fluke. If next month is negative or only very mildly positive, that's a bad sign. This is like the GDP reports over the past 9 months, where Q4 was a blowout positive but it was all on inventory expansion and was otherwise a recessionary print. Singing about how good times are back again in Q4 was grossly premature.

Calcium hypochlorite only lasts 24 months past the date of manufacture.

The pills you get in bottles have expiration dates on them, but they don't last nearly as long as you'd think. Also, the water needs to be fairly clear for it to work. Turbid water or water with growth in it requires a much higher dose than what's in the directions.

Yeah. It was interesting but I was also blown away by the quality of the museum. Glass is actually pretty hard to display effectively, especially in a building that itself has a lot of glass - lots of windows, lots of glass dividers, etc - and they did a simply sensational job of it.

The Testament of Dr. Mabuse takes him further. He wishes to see a reign of crime to overturn the existing order.

Lang put Nazi words directly into Mabuse's mouth in the sound feature. It was banned. Lang fled Germany.

320 Gas prices have not fallen because Biden released oil from strategic reserves. Gas prices have fallen because many of the refineries east coast to west have completed annual shutdowns/mainainence, a lot of it that was put off because of covid over the last two years. Many in my trade that chase refinery shutdown overtime $$$ literally followed work east to west. Ended here in the Bay Area and Long Beach end of July. You can probably track the prices falling regionally just by following refinery shutdowns.

Ramen is a classic Giffen Good, and yeah, the old Wall Street saying is true.

(Giffen Goods are one of two categories of goods that violate the rules of supply and demand, in that demand rises as prices increase. The reason is that these are special goods. They are always inferior goods that usually have small or moderate baseline demand but get more popular - out of necessity - when real incomes are under serious pressure. When you lose your job or inflation hits you and you can no longer afford what you want - say, eggs or meat or fancy mac and cheese - you still need to eat and will buy the inferior good, even if it clocks in at a higher price. Higher demand activity in Giffen Goods is another recession indicator.)

Joe explained Giffen goods very well. Veblen goods are tied to his idea of conspicuous consumption as a marker of social status in elite circles. Those goods vary from craze to craze but those wanting social status go crazy over them because the kink is both cost and lack of general availability. It is to show social status versus the plebes.

Right. Demand for Veblen goods increases with price because those goods are status markers for the hyper-rich class.

For example to those who are curious:
Bugatti might sell, say, 1000 cars at a million bucks each but they'll sell 1500 cars at two million bucks each. The car - and its price tag - is the point of the exercise. People rich enough to afford either will *prefer* to spend more because it's a bigger marker. This happens in various markets depending on predilections and who the person is trying to impress. It's rampant in the Hi-Fi "audiophile" community, for another example. The expense of the system is a major positive factor.

No, not precisely. Veblen goods are purchased by rich people and it is a rich-person phenomenon. Those rich folks may or may not know what the phenomenon is or how to describe it - and certainly don't care about that or why it is interesting from an economics and markets standpoint. It is important information for people trying to make sense of the economy. Veblen goods are an interesting sideshow, not a meaningful economic indicator and so if you have Veblen goods in your analysis, your analysis is probably not sensible (unless, of course, you're specifically studying them).

I don't want to see it stopped, I want those white people to feel the pain of their own idiocy. First white person fired that files a lawsuit should be publicly shamed for their white privilege.

517 Depressions are caused by real estate collapses not stock markets. When real estate falls it takes a shit ton of big money out of circulation. This doesn't happen in a stock market fall. Florida real estate collapse caused the depression of the 30s.

518 480 And even more hilarious: it violates a SC case from '96(?) in which the court says that school districts cannot use 'diversity' as a criteria to choose who to fire. NO race based criteria is something school districts cannot seem to grok.

Union sez: So sue me, I've got 72 lawyers on staff and a half-dozen AGs on speed-dial.
Posted by: Socratease at August 15, 2022 04:38 PM (oqnjT)

If the Teachers Union was capable of playing 3D chess, I'd think it was a bold play. "Hey you people in rich neighborhoods, if you don't want to ante up for higher teacher pay, guess who's getting laid off? YOUR teachers!"
But a more logical explanation is the union is just a bunch of Lefty racists.

Speaking of New York...

New Rule, Everyone!

The fake unelected "governor" of New York decided now is a good time to ban/censor/delete/eliminate the word "inmate" and instead call jailbirds "incarcerated individuals."

Why do this? (Same as answer as "why do dogs lick their balls.") The fake reason is to "help," get this, "justice-involved" persons have higher esteem.

My favorite (which I alluded to) is luxury brand female handbags. They start at $3,000 and just go up. They're good quality, but they probably have about $200 of materials and labor in them max.

Fun Fact: Louis Vuitton never discount old stock. They burn them.

Yup. The bottom end of the high range is the same - for my money and to my ears - as the more expensive stuff. $300 or even $400 headphones are worth the money to me. More than that is not and can't be justified (to me - others have different opinions).

My headphones - which I strongly recommend you try out if you're looking for very clear, very good headphones in the moderate-high price range (About $225 street price) - are the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7.

I lived through the Reagan years. The news was only on three channels that's all you got. Every single night they told everyone it was awful. It was for like a year. Then everybody you knew was getting a job in years 2-4. It got to be completely absurd. People experience economic reality directly. They can gaslight people on wars and foreign policy. But as somebody said, its the economy stupid. Because you can't fool people. When its bad its bad. When its good its good.
