A JD Power survey finds that EV charging is still a huge mess A common complaint you hear from electric vehicle owners is about the sorry state of public EV charging: broken chargers, janky software, busted screens. A new paper, The Injustice of Under-Policing, makes a point that I have been emphasizing for many years, namely, relative to other developed countries the United States is under-policed and over-imprisoned. …the American criminal legal system is characterized by an exceptional kind of under-policing, and a heavy reliance on long prison sentences, compared to other developed nations. In this country, roughly three people are incarcerated per police officer employed. The rest of the developed world strikes a diametrically opposite balance between these twin arms of the penal state, employing roughly three and a half times more police officers than the number of people they incarcerate. We argue that the United States has it backward. Justice and efficiency demand that we strike a balance between policing and incarceration more like that of the rest of the developed world. We call this the “First World Balance.” First, as is well known, the US has a very high rate of imprisonment compared to other countries but less well known is that the US has a relatively low rate of police per capita.

For me, Winters was the perfect 1960s Rock N' Roll inspired Blues counterpoint to the truly great British blues guitarists such as Clapton, Paige, Beck, and Green. His playing was just different, it was always meticulously played but always on the edge of spiraling out of control and his single chord grooves, like Mean Town Blues, were just wicked. This difference I concluded came from him growing up in the time and places of the great 2nd wave blues at their peak; he was a native blues speaker, so to speak. For the Brits, everything was one step removed and that changed how the music was approached and, as everything turned out, was essential to how they reinvented blues. Neither is better, neither is worse. And I love them equally.

I love going to movies at the theater. So, one time I got up to the ticket booth and found out my wallet wasn't in my purse. I told the seller I would go home for my wallet and come back for a later show. The manager was nearby and gave me a free pass. It made my day.

And now, I'm about to pull the plug on getting a big ass generator, enough to pull the whole house (and by a long shot). It's a PTO model, to be tractor driven, and so you can spend the money on generator without engine to turn it.
I'm having to force myself to realize what I'm doing is exchanging paper for real stuff, while the getting is good.

Kudos to the sweet waitress who made the kitchen remake my daughter's quesadilla because it was too burnt today. The offending quesadilla never even made it to our table, and she whisked over the renake as soon as it was done. And the grandmotherly hostess came over to make sure my daughter was doing okay.
All of this at an airport Chili's. I really wish I could move to Florida, y'all are so nice here.

Yesterday I stopped at local Denny's type place here in Las Cruces, NM for an omelet and hashbrowns. The lovely young women was like you don't want the toast and pancakes - they come with the meal. I am like, no, I am good. No waffles? Nah, I am good. Extra hashbrowns? No, thank you. With that she went to place the order and 5 minutes later she comes back with how about some fresh fruit. She finally nailed me. It was great. I left her a very good tip. This is New Mexican culture in one episode. It is so lovely here.

I have to two tractors that can pull that thing wide ass open, a Ford 7710 and an 8700. I will use the 7710 first choice. At max rated PTO output, 86HP, fuel consumption is 5 gal per hour.
It will not be running wide open. Overall, efficiency is the greatest at full load. You get more output for input, but at much greater rate. At low load, efficiency is poorer, but fuel consumption is much less.

In Oregon, the case law with the Bureau of Labor (BOLI) decided that dancers at strip clubs are employees, entitled to minimum wage and cannot work for tips like an independent contractor.
IIRC It was due to the dancers being scheduled when and where to work and how long to be on.
Years ago there were some complaints about being paid just in tips and not enough to cover minimum wage, but I don't think those claims went very far because the dancers would be black-balled in all the clubs.

He wound up with a good quantity of cold cuts, and I got the fat and rind (and hambone)
I would dice up a tablespoon or so of the ham and fry it down a bit to try out the fat, and then bake chopped potatoes in the same pan with the fat in the oven.
It was heavenly.

A common measure of engine efficiency is HP-hours per gallon of fuel. For the 7710 above, that's 86 HP / 5 gallons per hour consumption, which is about 17 Hp-hrs per gallon.
Now, converting that to kW-hrs, it's about 12.8 kW-hrs per gallon. That is of course, mechanical output power at the PTO shaft. Generator efficiency and gearbox losses will knock that down. Synchronous machine efficiency is pretty high for the big boys, but less for the smaller little ones.

Diesel is in the tractors, of course, and I've got storage tanks. You wouldn't want to let diesel sit around for years, but we've used diesel stored here over a year with no problems.
If I were doing this from scratch, things would be different calculations. But I've got some big tractors here, big engines already here that can drive a generator.

I canned green beans yesterday, and made blackberry jam. Tomorrow I have to pick my yellow plums and make plum conserve. This is my first real harvest off a plum I grafted, and it might be an indication that I am going to have a lot of plums in my future, that tree is loaded.

Another inflation driver...reduce supply and hold demand constant. Like they're doing with gas. Two million less barrel s a day produced a doubling of price to bring supply back in balance with demand.
And prices of everything... everything that moves...went up to buy the gas and provide a profit margin.

I am drying apples today, I may dry zucchini tomorrow or the next day. Dried zucchini is very boring, and reconstituted in stew it has no flavor and the texture of oyster mushrooms.

I think raising interest rates mostly slows the creation of money via loans, and lets a growing economy catch up. If the regulation and taxation load are too heavy, the economy does nothing because it can't move so it can't catch up with the money creation rate anyways.
Also, the FedGov inventing money is also inflationary.
They will not let it go deflationary for very long, that is let the creation of money be lower than the growth of the economy, since too many dear friends and relatives are relying on easy money to operate.

Under normal monetary and banking conditions, yes. But I remember reading some articles over the years about how the system is so fucked up, that things ain't working normally.
The Fed put so much damned M0 money in the system with the QE (and then the Coof blowout that blew all the previous rounds of QE away), that it was so outside the bounds of normal monetary conditions it was uncharted territory.
Very weird things are happening that just stands normal on its head.

Nope, nothing like that at all. The Fed has put so much base money, which are reserves in the system, that the reserve requirement becomes meaningless, and actually counter-productive to the control of the fed funds rate!
I don't understand all the details, but I remember reading an article explaining it. That's how crazy the monetary and banking conditions are now.

the reason why stairway to heaven is an issue in guitar stores is because for some frigging reason it was the song every frigging nosepicker that walked into a guitar store would play, especially in the mid to late 70's. The salesmen got frigging tired of it. I worked in a guitar store during my senior year in high school, and I saw it first hand. Hand a kid a guitar, and boom, you're gonna hear stairway to heaven. The pissoff is, its not a hard song. I was playing the frigging lead to that song in junior high, why it became a benchmark I have no idea, but it did. Yeah it died out after a while when it became old enough to fart dust and by the early 80's the kids were all playing thrash and speed metal, but man for a while there stairway to heaven was chinese fucking water tortue.

BTW, I was just looking at small generator efficiencies. For the fuel input energy to output electric energy, the are pretty piss poor. Around 20% give or take a little bit. And they do drop at low load. Some will get as low as 13% at low load. Others do better.
Bottom line is burning your own fuel to generate is very, very inefficient. Your cost per kW-hr is many, many times what utilities charge.
It's the old economies of scale thing here. Very large generators and the prime movers to turn them can be much more efficient, input and cost wise.

I don't think the sharp rocks and scree slopes would be friendly to the tracks. They were really built for snow, but handle mud quite well, too.

Stirling engines have very low efficiency, IIRC, because the delta T through the cycle is so small. What they can do, though, is make effective use of low-grade heat.

Yep, Stirling engines are mostly good for teaching heat engine principles in Thermodynamics courses. :-)
Don't get me wrong, they do have some practical applications, but you're not going to do much with them as a practical matter.
A real Stirling engine is very different from the ideal one in the Thermo courses. There are other inefficiences in the practical design.

Re engine efficiency. There is a maximum theoretical efficiency of a heat engine. It's very simple, 1 - Tc/Th, where Tc is the heat sink temperature, and Th is the hot side temp, both in absolute temperatures.
So, the only way to get that to 100% is have your cold body at absolute zero, or your hot body at infinite temperature, both of which are unattainable. High temperatures are destructive to materials, of course.
But that is the ceiling on efficiency set by the laws of thermodynamics. Real world efficiency is much lower because of other effects like friction, heat loss, etc, etc.

At Clempson Cow Collidge, the Physics Dept. had a number of cute little well made Stirling engines. The one I remember was propane torch powered. You set it up, then heated the hot end with a standard hand-held torch.

Gotland class submaries. The Stirling system is the Kockums v4-275R Stirling AIP unit, two of them on these submarines.
Looking that up, heat source is LOX burning diesel fuel in a high pressure combustion chamber. Heat sink is the water. It also has regular diesel engines for surface propulsion.

The idea of those Stirling "AIP", air independent propulsion was stealth and long underwater endurance times. Nuclear of course is the way to go, but this was a clever non-nuclear way that can give "weeks" of underwater run time.
The Stirling engine is very quiet. Combustion pressures are such that the exhaust can just be directly dumped into the surrounding water.
The US Navy did some wargaming with these Swedish submarines, and one managed to get close enough to the USS Ronald Reagan to have sunk it, so stealthy it was.
Don't tell anyone, but the US Navy has a weakness for very stealthy diesel electric submarines. A normal battery powered one managed to "sink" the USS Enterprise during a similar war game.

Those Gotlands have onboard batteries of course, and can function as a regular diesel-electric. The Stirlings can charge the batteries under water or directly drive the propulsion system, but not both.
Under the Stirling propulsion, speed is just 5 knots. With batteries, 20 knots.
It's a very, very stealthy, sneaky attack submarine.

Yep, a refrigerator (heat pump) is just a heat engine in reverse. Here, efficiency is seen in a different light. Rather than getting work out of a temp difference, you're inputting work to move heat against a temperature difference. That is, pump heat uphill so to speak.
In reverse, conditions that make for a piss poor heat engine, low temp difference, make for the most efficient heat pump operation.
Little work for a heat engine means lots of heat moved for little work input in a refrigerator.

Back in the late '60s, as a Boy Scout, I toured a boomer (Norfolk, VA sub piers). Got to walk around the missile silos on the sub which the sailors' affectionately called 'Sherwood Forest'. They told us they exercised by running laps around the silos. Also hit my head going through one of the hatches. I don't now how sailors willingly go beneath the seas in boats. Claustrophobic as hell.
