  • Running Android without Google. (Tom's Guide)

Okay, so the hardware in the two tests reported here is sold by google - the Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 - but the software is two versions of Android - /e/OS and GrapheneOS - stripped of all the Google-specific software and tracking.

You can still install the Play Store and install all your usual apps, and they will (mostly) work the same as before. The one thing highlighted here is that you will lose Google's custom camera app - and this results in a marked drop in photo quality because the software is doing most of the magic there.

But if you want out of the Google trap without losing compatibility entirely, either of these might be a viable option.

Tech News

  • What's coming up in AMD motherboards. (PC Magazine)

AMD launches Ryzen 7000 and the matching Socket AM5 motherboards on September 15, and the motherboard makers have gone beyond leaks to official previews of the hardware.

The new boards will bring a few new features: PCIe 5 for double the I/O bandwidth, DDR5 for about 60% more memory bandwidth, and USB 4 for double the bandwidth there if and when 40Gbps USB devices show up.

10Gb Ethernet also seems to be more common than on the last generation, which is welcome given the paucity of PCIe slots these days.

  • AMD is also releasing a new range of video cards this year. (Tom's Hardware)

These will offer a lot more compute power than the current generation - two to three times at the high end, but it remains to be seen what that translates to in terms of graphics performance and power consumption. I suspect you'll get something like a 50% improvement at the same MSRP and TDP, with the high-end cards being way out there on both numbers.

  • Does the Dog Die is a cute idea driven into the ground and then nuked from orbit. (Does the Dog Die)

There's a Twitter account CanYouPetTheDog which simply documents what video games let you pet a dog. That's fun.

Does the Dog Die tries to catalog every potential trigger for the most hyper-neurotic people in existence. That's not fun at all.

Disclaimer: You can pet the dog in Holocure. You'll probably get killed by the swarms of enemies if you try, but you can do it.

9 Back about 10 years ago, we owned a lake house with another couple in Wis. Best weekend of the year was the weekend before Labor Day.
Most of the Illinois families had school doings starting up and the lake would be almost empty of boats.

11 I missed the ONT. The first thing I thought of with the Australia Google driving directions mishap (a family ended up stuck on a dirt road in the middle of nowhere) was the Death Valley Germans, a family of tourists who vanished without a trace in 1996. Their car was discovered months later in a remote corner of the park. As best as can be determined they were using an outdated map and going for a shortcut to get to California. Years later a couple of guys obsessed with the case went searching and found the adults' remains (just a few bones) and several items like a driver's license.

26 Or the time my wife and I went to a neighbors start up church, because we're nice people, for there grand opening. Our neighbor was the pastor. He talked in much the same way during his sermon(?). My wife and I looked at each other about a half hour into the service.

You could hear our eyes roll.

27 Morning, y'all. A fusion testbed in CA managed to achieve ignition (it happened last year but it took a year to write the per reviewed articles) that lasted for at least a couple of nanoseconds.

They haven't been able to duplicate the result again. Uh huh.

Starlink's terminals are hackable, and can then even be used to try and hack the satellites. Starlink released a 'fix', the finder of the weakness sez the flaw is inherent in the terminal chip. He got paid a bounty by Starlink, and then released all the step by step details of the hack. Swell.

Oh, and SpaceX launched another 46 Starlink sats, just a week after launching 53 or 54. Starlink is approved for 12k sats, and is already well over 3k in orbit.

43 Growing up, sister always thought this house was haunted. Weird stuff would happen that convinced her. (I'm not entirely sure she's wrong.) Anyway, I've had off of work all last week due to my burn injuries of 2 weeks ago, (they got infected - it was kinda scary) and I stayed here because mom's house is closer to the burn center i've had to go to daily.

I can report, no weird happenings while I've been here.since mom died.
