First-World Problems...

mineralglass.jpg

We have hard water, and in spite of a reasonably effective water softening system, our glasses eventually pick up that irritating embedded staining that is impossible to remove. Oh, I have tried vinegar and other acids, but short of an Aqua Regia bath, those stains aren't coming off!

Just imagine how it makes my beer feel! How insulting that I have to pour good beer into tainted glasses!

18 You tried the detergents that still actually have phosphates in them? One reason our "modern" dishwashers need to run for 3 hours instead of 7 minutes.

Cascade's Fryer Boiler cleaner is one - it's basically full of TSP and is what dish detergent used to be sans fragrance. Also Bubble Bandit, to a lesser degree. My in-laws have their own spring and well water which has lots of minerals. I suggested this stuff and after a month or two their glasses went from white to clear.

I just spent a fortune on a really good water softener, it's almost ridiculous as I feel lubricated in the shower. Should solve some of these issues.

I'm in the middle of my own first world problem right now - just spent a fortune on a new turntable (got my old one back from the ex who appears to have used it drunk) and now my phono stage seems to have died coincidentally? The electricity in this place sucks which doesn't help. Oh well, back to the micro tools and loupe. And maybe some day drinking while I try swapping cartridges, cables and the old turntable.

25 Water here in San Diego/SoCal is basically raw material for beginning chemistry experiments in precipitation (at UCSB they did use to have you start by precipitating an amazing number of things out of the tapwater). Unsurprising, since the water's all piped/canal'd/etc in from afar.

But I have yet to see those permanent stains on most glassware - usually it's the plastic that does that. Just the French-style restaurant glasses (whatever they're actually called) seem to have picked up a frosted look.

The anti-spot stuff in the dishwasher leaves the glassware nice and shiny.

31 I could write a book about this, not on my glasses, but on my glass showers doors. Or rather, the ones in my sons' bathroom. I provided them with a squeegee and asked that they use it but alas, they didn't.

I've tried all sorts of things, including vinegar + dish soap, straight vinegar on paper towels plastered on the door, baking soda, CLR, Limeaway, 0000 steel wool, and most recently Rain-X shower door cleaner. Nothing has worked. I think the water spots are there permanently.

Once the glass gets etched, there's not much you can do. And after years that's what happens. You could try taking some rubbing compound (like for cars) and an orbital buffer (or elbow grease) to a section and see if that removes it. If you do wind up with new glass, put some of the glass protectant stuff on as preventative maintenance. RainX and others make stuff just for that. Squeegee every single time.

Yes, but just a tiny bit. Or, buy the stuff with it in it. Here in CA, it's nearly impossible to find real TSP. Some says TSP, but it's not tri sodium phosphate. It's Tom's Super Purgative.

92 huerfano I use the hot vinegar from coffee maker cleaning along with old baking soda previously used for odor control in the fridge on bathroom sinks (the pipes and drain plugs), does a nice job of scrubbing some of the stuff away.

93 Forgot all about getting TSP when I got a new dishwasher not long ago. It does a great job as it is, no problems with not cleaning thoroughly. Softened awful SoCal water used by the dishwasher, doesn't seem to matter. Just the conventional detergent seems to clean everything fine.

You could try liquid laundry soap. I have had good luck getting the shower stall clean from the hard water scum

On the other hand you can take the doors down to a shop that has a bead blaster cabinet and ask them to frost them for you.
You can even make designs with tape or latex and ask them to gently frost around the masking if you want a pattern.
They will have to do it in the parking lot, and they might make you pay for new sand . . . Or tell you no way.

Posted by: mrp at August 14, 2022 02:50 PM (6eRlp)

I like the idea of solar as off-the-grid aid, and I do have a small panel and battery for emergency use, but East TN is way too cloudy and forested for it to be practical. We do have lots of nuke and hydro though, so if when our federal frenz finally manage to self-immolate the entire economic system we should still have a decent amount of local power generation capability.

We probably have more spikes and outages than anywhere else in the USA though, because while the power plants work fine the distribution infrastructure has always been rather second world. Thanks, municipal utilities boards! And they wonder why I'm not enthusiastic about muni internet service...

Exactly. Not mention what mineral build up is doing to the hot heater heater, the kitchen appliances, the washer and dryer, the plumbing, and your clothes. But screwing up beer glasses, friggn' criminal which is why I a few months ago put in a highly effective water softener system.

Sadly, Pyrex is no longer borosilicate.

But in 1998, Corning, the company which made Pyrex, sold the brand to World Kitchen LLC. World Kitchen decided to stop the manufacture of borosilicate glass, and since then, Pyrex sold in the United States is made of tempered soda-lime glass, which does not handle heat as well as borosilicate glass does.

Because of its durability and resistance to chemical changes, borosilicate glass has traditionally been used in chemistry labs and industrial settings, as well as for kitchenware and premium wine glasses. Because of its superior quality, it is often priced higher than soda-lime glass.

Just like Corning made vintage PYREX, today's French made PYREX is still Borosilicate Glass.

I think it's a serious infrastructure problem. FWIW, the water is fine after desal. It's what we drank in Saudi, and we had no problems with it. The downside there was the desal plant was in Dahran, and when it "went out," (undisclosed terror incident) Riyadh was without water for almost a week. That became dire, but it shouldn't be a problem here in the US.

324 You can get TSP, even in California.

If you use it in a dishwasher use one quarter teaspoon. That's right: 1/4 TSP.

This was is in my high efficiently dishwasher, but even if you have an old seventies hotpoint I would not use more than a 1/4 TSP. It is powerful stuff.

Case in point: I experimented with various doses and when I reached 3/4 TSP the dishwasher proof decals on my glasses melted. God knows what that amount of TSP did to my internals, but so far two years later my dishwasher still works.

The 1/4 TSP of TSP won't get all the built up lime on glasses the first time, but if you stick to it they will get clean.

internet browser compatibility problems. Whenever I take a look at your blog in Safari,
it looks fine however when opening in Internet Explorer, it's got some overlapping issues.
I just wanted to provide you with a quick heads up!
Apart from that, excellent site!
