It's fair season!

Fair.jpg

This may not be real. I dunno why, it's a nifty image. Silo, hay rolls, what else invokes Iowa in your mind? Tell me about the state fairs in your area. We've got the big one in Dallas starting Sept 30, and the “East Texas state fair” here in Tyler starting on Sept 23 ( I have GOT to have a talk with the organizers about the meaning of the word “state”. I know we're later than most, but guys, it's HOT down here. End Sept is really nice. If we did it in August like most states, we'd melt.

CHICKENS!

I'm going to take a moment for a personal note here.

little.jpg

On the left is Little, 3 days after he was born. We are watching the Ravens game together. A young Big is in the background. My tiny wee little (my wife would be screaming right now “Tiny wee little? 9lb, 12oz! Try pushing that out through your dickhole, you son of a bitch!”. On the right is the proof for his senior banner (they hang them outside the stadium on game days), 6'1, 215 lbs. Offensive lineman. I'm not crying, you're crying. No, wait, that is me. Sorry, my bad. First scrimmage of the season is tonight. I couldn't be any prouder if I'd laid an egg.

26 I always thought it'd be fun to make a historical metal band called Antipope. Idiots would think I'm just raging against religion, but my actual audience of historically aware headbangers would understand that the antipope tended to be at least as devout as the regular pope.

Sabaton does that sort of thing better than I could, though their fixation on WWII gets boring.

I used to buy old postcards from flea markets and old unused stamps from the local coin shop and send out "encrypted" postcards to random addresses as a hobby.

54 There is a town on I-5 between Portland and Salem called Woodburn. Woodburn used to be known for being rural and mostly Russian Old Believers, and now is known for being suburban and mostly Mexican.

Anthony Medina is going to get elected to the state legislature in November. He has exactly the same beliefs as do all Oregon left-wing Democrats, but since he has brown skin, this counts as "diversity".

Well, Anthony couldn't get a chiropractic appointment, so he went to the Woodburn Spa for a massage, located in a small dilapidated building. He was massaged by the owner, a Chinese national, and after 20 minutes, she pulled down his underwear, and reached for his genitals.

Anthony was of course shocked by this, told her to stop, which she immediately did, and the massage session was quickly terminated.

Anthony was of course utterly traumatized by this, and is now suing the owner - for $450,000.

Even more amazingly, the Democratic mayor of Woodburn also went to the spa, and had much the same traumatic experience as Anthony. What are the odds?

I'm founding a nonprofit to protect innocent Democratic politicians from predatory massage parlors. Please give generously.

However, I think he's at root more libertarian. He saved Walden Woods the correct way: not by government coercion, but by raising raising millions and BUYING THE LAND to conserve it -- what a concept!

Also, listen to the lyrics of "Get Over It" and tell me he's not based.

The cops apparently didn't take this too seriously, so they arrested the owner and an employee for "practicing massage without a license".

Anthony and the mayor also demanded that the place be closed, but it's still open. The cops apparently have better things to do than busting jack shacks.

I though Democrats in Oregon were known for learning of massive violation and then blackmailing payments over a period of decades. Getting that lump sum up front makes sure no-one can dip their beaks.

With the right support, that massage parlor owner could have gotten an influential position on the city council and been a controlled vote. Win Win.

Just like with Goldschmidt. Sorry about the girl, of course, but think of the massive career in politics a tiny amount of blackmail and corruption made possible.

Also, listen to the lyrics of "Get Over It" and tell me he's not based.

190 It is a 1963, fairly late in the run, I think. Would have come equipped with Studebaker's 289 engine in some iteration, and a PowerShift transmission. Currently it has a McKinnon 283 (all the same as Chevy) out of a '66 Studebaker sedan, coupled to a TH350 transmission. Makes a decent driver, and looks like it should. And the price was right.

The guy handed him the keys and took the license plate off. It was one of those states where the plates went with the owner. But he was told not to worry, just let the cops know you just bought it and it will be okay. Then he found himself in Wyoming, spread-eagled at the back of the car saying "but he told me that you'd be nice to me!" He did have enough paperwork to convince them and they let him travel on.

I think just about everyone here feels sometimes like they're talking to a wall.

309 In other news, i successfully conducted the Great Burbulent Battery Swap today. '99 Suburban was getting very hard to start. Weak battery was cranking it real slowly. It never outright failed, but it was teetering on the edge. '08 Suburban sports two batteries, a larger cranking battery, and a smaller auxiliary battery. I checked the aux battery with my battery tester, and it was real good. So, I pulled it out of the '08, put it in the '99, and put the weak battery from the '99 into the aux tray of the '08. It shows a full 12 volts, just can't push much current. But the aux battery doesn't have much demands on it, anyway. Wires are quite skinny.

End result: the '99 starts up like it was brand new, and the '08 is the same as it ever was, and shows no faults.

322 So am I the last person to become aware of all the fake stores promoted mostly by Google Shopping?

Some of the stores have "amazing" (impossible) pricing, some just have extremely competitive or pretty good pricing.

What they all have in common is when you click on them they look pretty fucking real. A dead giveaway that I've noticed is they put a plus in front of the phone number, almost like you would internationally. That's not generally how we display phone numbers in America. But these claim to be in American locations.

Usually a whois lookup will show you that the store/site was created in the last few months. Another dead giveaway. The last one I clicked on was located in "Ohio" and looked like the genuine article, with a link to google maps and pictures and everything.

Anyway you pay and they run off with your money and you never hear a thing again. You can do chargebacks, but who wants all the hassle?

well we "all" agree on many things, but we are not here as a mutual agreement society, we are here to refine our opinions, sort out the variations, and so on.

Constantly pointing out the disagreements (refining our course) is basically the scientific method. Constantly reinforcing how we are right (and righteous) on all thangs gets us nowhere, except where the leftists are, in their dogma.

Today, I received (four days late) a Vortex Viper PST GenII scope, which I'd bought from an eBay vendor. Was advertised as "New in the Box". It was, but the box wasn't new. I'd think the scope was a store display or vendor's sample out in retail, and the box took some hits while back in the stockroom. User's Manual was missing, and the battery had already been installed in the 'scope. (that doesn't happen with a SEALED New in Box presentation.) Still, $300 less than the best deal at Optics Planet does not hurt.

Gave the seller a "meh" review though. New in Box is not the same as Repacked/New, and they did not answer my inquiries as to shipping delays, either. I'm counting my blessings.. I've got the scope, and Vortex is sending me out, not only a User's Manual, but I've ordered their flip up caps, 30mm Picatinny type rings, and a throw-ring for the zoom.

It's all going atop a verry accurate rifle, so this is gonna be fun!

I blew up a hornets' nest once. Well, those paper wasps, that build those football-sized paper nests. I made a giant firecracker out of black powder and rolled-up newspaper, with a hunk of cannon fuse. Waited until dark, when all the little bastards were back in the nest, and jammed that puppy into the hole in the bottom of the nest, and lit the fuse.

There was an Earth-shattering Kaboom, and the air was filled with confetti. No more wasps.

yeah, it is a balance. We need groups, but not cultish groups that deny free thinking and independence. idk how the military fits in on that category, but most military I see learned discipline (which is vital to free thinking) and at least in the USA, ideally backed a "higher calling".

But everything is so infiltrated by evil (Woke Army, sheesh) that the institutions are failing. In the old testament the major structures were often corrupted, but God promised something about there always being a "remnant", even if they were prophets hiding in caves.

To your own self (and your own relationship with God) be true.

I was born here, I grew up here, I came back to live here. So, in no particular order: The smell of money (cow/pig manure), the worst fertilizer days (chicken manure), gridline countryside (the English countryside offends me for reasons you can't possibly understand), ridiculously fresh meat/produce/ice cream, the Iowa State Fair/straw poll/caucuses, schools raising money by selling sweet corn, town festivals...

and the nicest people you will ever meet, who will beg you to let them give you the shirt off their back because they're convinced you need it more than they do but don't want to offend you by offering it.

in fairness, iowa is sort of a colder nebraska without the interesting shape.

446 Nurse. Give the 40 yards a try.

But good practice is bowling pins at 100 yards. When you're scoring about 4 out of 6, regularly, you'll be making that 40 yard drill, from the draw.

Tomorrow we stick a shiv in Satan's gut and all of Heaven will break out in celebration and sing songs of celebration and and shout out in acclamation as the Lord welcomes another to His eternal kingdom.

I haven't done anything, in my estimation right in this life, I'm a lowly transgressing sinner of the worst magnitude, but if I somehow managed to show her the path to salvation, and she gains life eternal, then the good Lord can cast me off to burn in the pits of Hades if He deems it proper in His righteous wisdom and I won't utter a word of complaint.

"John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; 27He it is, who coming after me is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose."

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

imo, don't count on the "holy" water doing anything. God does a deep forensic dive on "the heart" to determine your free will choice. It is not an emotional "come down to the alter" decision of the moment. (as fun as those emotional alter calls might be)

But raising up your kids in the way they should go is the right path.

.......

Oh, I agree. I'm just saying it was example of a rationalist argument for belief.

I don't really constrain the path in which the Lord may reach anyone. Eric Metaxas likes to point out in some talks he gives how troubling is for the premise of atheism.

His argument is essentially that as man began to study physics and the cosmos, they put together a handful of pre-existing conditions for life, and so posited that there must be millions of other planets supporting life. But as science advanced, more and more understanding of the necessity of the slightest variability in factors of gravitational pull and various other factors made the likelihood of life as observed, infinitely small and that eventually, as we reach the limits of human understanding, we will be left with only one conclusion, that life can't even possibly have existed mathematically speaking, that the conflagration of all things simultaneously occurring is will prove that there isn't a possibility of the universe, and the existence of life in it, ever having occurred.

672 "I think Pascal's Wager offers a rudimentary intellectual argument for belief. Just a cost/benefit analysis."

I hadn't heard of that, but after a brief review, I think there are better "logical" arguments for belief in God.

Or at least more "deeply soul felt" reasons for belief, that are more than just the emotions of joining the group (that kind of emotion that can be generated by joining and being accepted by any group).

Or at least I think there is a delineation between just joining a group (cultish behavior, nature of man to be accepted by other men) and actually becoming Christian ... which in the first century was a very dangerous thing perhaps, Peter didn't even stand with Jesus while he was alive, denied him thrice.

So many of the traditions of men are more about group think and paganism ... golden calves that we can visualize, rituals that are repetitive and "non-thinking". Too "deep" maybe, but that relates to how our society is being corralled into PC thinking.

"You have made the Word of God of none effect by your tradition" ... perhaps relates to what I'm trying to convey. But ... I'm still figuring out the universal unified spiritual theory. ha

690 None of which is to say that man should try to intellectually reason his way to God, only that I won't discount the possibility of it happening.

I think art is a somewhat parallel way in which the brain may intuitively understand something once hidden, but further revealed.

You may look at a print of a painting and at a surface level understand the colors and subject matter at a superficial level, but upon viewing a painting in person, you begin to understand the complexity and start to marvel at the craftsmanship, technique, creativity and mastery of the painter.

Is that an intellectual epiphany? I don't know. Semantics are open to interpretation. But I think in some ways, a similar path the the relation of creation might be viewed similarly. To truly observe the intricacy of the world may open up the eyes of some to the amazement of everything, or perhaps it may just wind up a routine set of statistics, But I believe the former, the intellectual curiosity towards the intricacy of matter and existence, is a path to revelation for some.

711 "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." Acts 1:5

John preceded Jesus, we are now "baptized" in the real deal, holy spirit, which was not available till Pentecost. Water is now optional. (there is one account in Acts where they baptized in water, but imo, just due to the tradition and symbolism)

I put holy spirit in lower case because I believe in that new birth thang, actual new life, new holy spirit created in us when we are "born again". (and I am not "adding a word like Luther", the original text is not capitalized, and there are no ghosts ... "pneuma hagion", in this case, sonship spirit)

I snark but she was a gorgeous woman.

Try writing an ONT. i always try to have varied and interesting content, and most night nobody winds up commenting on half of it (or the entire thread is nothing but people talking about just one thing). I've been doing this for...6? Maybe 7 years (I'll have to check) and I never know what's going to strike the Horde's fancy on any given night.

Seems to happen in my family every generation, at least on my Dad's side for the last...3 or 4 generations. Something happens that splinters the family, and it never fully recovers until all those involved have passed away.
For my paternal grandmother, her father died, and her mother had to put her and her sisters in an orphanage because her father's family refused to help (she had been hired help that married the youngest son).

Not adopted (unless I was the wrong baby at the hospital). Dad was quite a bit older than Mom (and we joked about it...that Dad was in the Philippines during WW2 while my Mom was 4 years old). He had been previously married, but wife #1 lost their baby, then died less than a year later. They got divorced about 5 years ago after more than 50 years of marriage.

802 Celebrity deaths come in threes. Okay, Anne Hechebrown is number one. When I heard about Salman Rushdie today I thought, man, there's number two. Maybe not, but he lost an eye and has a stab wound in the liver and another in the neck. Plus he's 73. Then there's number three, unknown at this point.
