The Morning Rant – Awful Corporate Executives Making Awful Decisions

United Airlines Plans to Fly an Imaginary Supersonic Plane Using Boutique Biofuel in Just 7 Years

It is becoming painfully obvious that a great many executive offices in corporate America are occupied by idealistic, green enviro-dupes.

A start-up company has promised a radical new supersonic jet that is “net zero” and runs on a boutique fuel, and United Airlines’ credulous executives are already hyping this as a plane they will be flying in just 7 years. (They won’t.)

United entered into a contract with Boom Supersonic in 2021 to buy 15 of their proposed planes. How’s it coming along so far? Well, a drawing of the plane does actually exist. A couple of weeks ago the first design sketch was finally released, with much media hype.

This Is What Your United Flight Could Look Like in the Near Future [People – 7/20/2022]

United Boom.JPG

On Tuesday, aviation company Boom Supersonic revealed the design for its highly anticipated Mach 1.7 Overture passenger jet, which touts a speed twice as fast as the standard passenger airline.

Set to begin production in 2024, the supersonic plane seats 65 to 80 people and uses 100 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

United Airlines has already expressed interest in using the jet in the near future, posting a photo of the new design on Instagram with the caption, "Our hearts went BOOM!

Boom has raised about $250 million dollars (including $60 million of your tax dollars,) initially promising that its first test flight would occur by 2019. That first flight hasn’t happened yet.

The company touts its hypothetical airplane as “the world’s fastest and most sustainable commercial airliner.”

Although there is not even a full-sized mock-up of the proposed jet, Boom has assembled one plane, a 1/3 scale mock-up that has seating for one person. One. It’s been rolling around the tarmac at an airport in Colorado, but it has not taken flight.

And then there’s the laughable promise about running on “Sustainable Aviation Fuel.” Turning french fry grease into mass market fuel is the 21st century equivalent to the fusion energy hype of 40 years ago. The technology for industrial scale SAF doesn’t even exist.

The U.S. Department of Energy is working with the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and other federal government agencies to develop a comprehensive strategy for scaling up new technologies to produce SAF on a commercial scale.

You can go ahead and put this on your calendar now, United Airlines will not be flying this supersonic plane in 2029. You know it. I know it. But United’s executives don’t know it. They really want to believe in the sustainable snake oil they’ve been sold.

There was a time when I would have thought United’s executives were just seeking some publicity with this, but having watched auto manufacturers torch their balance sheets by investing in doomed-to-fail EV operations, I have no doubt that United’s executives actually believe this imaginary plane will be flying for them soon.

A whole lot of creative destruction is necessary in the corporate world to cleanse it of the sustainable organic idiots now occupying C-Suites.

Why Your “Delivered” Package Has Not Yet Been Delivered To You, and Other Fraud Incentivized By The “Goal Setting” Management Fad

This story came out just a week ago, and no one should be shocked by these types of employee actions at major corporations any longer. The reality is that executives have incentivized such behaviors with the idiotic “Goal Setting” management fad.

Toyota unit Hino admits falsifying engine data for nearly 20 years: Investigative report attributes fraud to poor frontline management and focus on targets

The report said Hino had fixed data to meet emission regulations that were actually exceeded, and falsified fuel performance reports. It also said that the fraud was caused by “an environment and structure in which management was not attentive to the front line and gave priority to schedules and numerical targets rather than appropriate processes.”

If employees are given goals that are unattainable, but they risk losing their jobs if they don’t hit those goals, they will often magically hit those goals, whether it’s fudging emissions testing (Toyota / Hino) or fraudulently opening bank accounts without customers’ consent (Wells Fargo Bank.)

The true scandal at Wells Fargo wasn’t the employees’ behavior. The scandal was that Wells Fargo’s executives - with all those fancy MBAs from all those fancy schools - didn’t understand that they had incentivized their employees to commit fraud as a necessary action to keep their jobs.

Here is an example of employee dishonesty in the face of unattainable goals that I bet many of you see on a regular basis. You check the tracking of a package you are waiting on and it shows “Delivered.” You’ve checked your mailbox and your front porch, but the package isn’t there. It finally shows up later – maybe hours later, maybe days later. So why did the delivery person report it as delivered when it hadn’t been? Because he had goals he had to meet. He is more incentivized to falsely report delivery than to face the consequences of not getting the package delivered within the budgeted time.

When employees en masse decide that dishonesty is the better option than accurately reporting on how they are completing their tasks, the fault is with bad management. Unfortunately, too many pompous executives believe that by simply decreeing a goal, their employees will magically find the capacity to do what is not attainable.

“…for the EV Transition”

I won’t go into all the problems going on at Ford right now, but they are finding it necessary to cut thousands of jobs and drastically reduce expenses. Their official excuse? It’s for the EV transition. That is just brilliant.

Ford Reportedly Preparing to Slash 8,000 Jobs to Help Fund EV Transition [Detroit Free Press – 7/20/2022]

Bloomberg, citing unnamed sources familiar with the plan, said July 20 the cuts will come largely in the newly created Ford Blue unit that produces gasoline-powered vehicles, as well as "other salaried operations throughout the company."

What a great all-purpose excuse!

The next time David Burge (@iowahawkblog) crashes his pickup truck into a liquor store, he can just tell the arresting officer that he’s considering an electric vehicle, so it’s all good! The crash can assist in the EV transition.

Got fired from your job? Just tell your spouse that by no longer commuting in your gas-powered SUV you’ll be helping the EV transition.

What have y’all got?

Feliz Viernes

As many of you know, I’ve spent a lot of time in South Texas, and I dearly love the Tejano culture – its people, food, culture, music, etc. The long-awaited re-alignment of Hispanics away from Democrats to Republicans has warmed my heart. Welcome compadres!

With that in mind, it’s Friday, so let’s end this rant with something that’ll put a smile on your face. How about a festive norteña version of Deep In The Heart of Texas!

85 As many of you know, I’ve spent a lot of time in South Texas, and I dearly love the Tejano culture – its people, food, culture, music, etc.

I moved to Rio Rancho, NM in 2017 and promptly fell head over heels for the Hispanic culture. A couple years later I ended up in Las Cruces, NM. The Mariachi, Tejano, and Cumbia music is magnificent and when somebody goes by with his or her pickup truck windows down and the stereo blowing it up, this never fails to bring a smile to face. I had enchiladas in New Braunfels, TX before seeing Steve Earle, not a lick of New Mexican green chiles there - 100% tomatillo based. It was so great. So yeah, I get all the passion for all this. There is a kindness here. Except for the criminals, they are epic.

They were getting about 5 mpg more on the dirty tunes. I haven't done the math, but it's entirely possible that they put out less NOx per mile (or per gallon) than the EPA compliant tunes.

The EPA is obsessed with concentration based limits (i.e ppm) when they really should be focuses on lbs of pollutant per mile or gallon. Assuming the concentration isn't so high that people are dropping dead behind the car.

106 The whole creative goal-reaching thing can be seen at your local drive-through. Ever wonder why service at those is so craptastic? Why it takes forever for anyone to even take your order? It's because the time from "order taken" to "paid for" is tracked automatically. Many places remain short-staffed, or only staffed by the bottom-barrel workers. In order to keep from getting shut down, lot of places just won't take an order until they're sure their kitchen can fulfill it fast enough to not get hammered by management.

There are so many moving parts to what's happening out there...at bottom, though, it's ultimately a crisis in management, in all sectors and in all levels. We're in dire need of a general housecleaning, from DC to your local McD's.

224 Do you mean the crash? It was a DC10 that lost pieces on the runway that punctured the fuel line of the next plane - a Concorde."

That was the claim that Air France put out, to try and deflect blame from itself. But independent investigators believe that the landing gear had been poorly maintained (some maintenance records show this) and that there was a wobble, allowing the landing gear to rotate out of true alignment, which caused a tire to explode. The fragments from the explosion then pierced the fuel tank directly above them, and the fuel began leaking directly into the engine exhaust.

The only reason Airbus is a success is the Europeans pooled their resources in 1970 and it took them a few decades to rival Boeing. An alternate proof point: How come China hasn't entered the commercial aviation business? You know they want too, and at some point they will, but so far they know they don't have all the pieces in place to pull this off. And Boom is going to build a supersonic commercial jet that runs on corn oil in under a decade? And the United corporate suite is down for this? --------
Speaking of federal contracts, we all know they're the greatest incentive for waste, fraud, & abuse -- something I learned working for Ford Aerospace out of college.

My unit's DOD contract was to maintain & operate simulated threat sites for Red Flag exercises out of Nellis AFB, the Air Force equivalent of Top Gun, over the Nevada Test & Training Range).

During my first year of employment, we had an all-hands meeting where the Program Director asked for suggestions on what goodies (luxuries we didn't need) we'd like to buy since money was left from the contract to spend, and we couldn't ask for MOAR money in the next contract if we hadn't spent it all.

I was astonished, but assume that's SOP with all government contractors. Incentives should be built-in for coming in under budget & ahead of time. [Can't think of any federal project since the Hoover Dam in 1936 that did that ...]

I dunno about that.

Concorde never did close to long-haul. Max range was ~ 4,500 miles. G800 has the 8 in the name for a reason: 8,000 (nautical) miles range.

Once you split the cost of charter/fractional ownership 8 ways, it's cheaper than first class long-haul tickets, and I can't imagine supersonic being cheaper than 1st-class.

Well, what they don't mean is "natural," since oil and coal and natural gas are all natural. And since the "sustainable" alternatives they offer for fuel are things like ethanol -- with a lower power yield and higher environmental cost -- I can only think that they mean "not icky." Sorta like the guns they want banned -- all the dangerous, black, war-looking ones, not the illegally obtained ones that actually get used in crimes.

The anti-fossil fuel types showed their hand when they offered up a carbon indulgences scheme to anyone with enough dough to pay up. Showed they were unserious about solutions; they only wanted outcomes. And the WEF is making those clearer every moment.

394 The corollary is when they are supposed to pick up a parcel or parcels.

You can setup a scheduled pickup on their website. They will email you a confirmation, and a tracking request. They only pickup pre-printed pre-purchased labeled parcels from an account, curiously though - they don't want to know the tracking #.

Because, when they DON'T pickup your parcel, that makes the numbers look bad.

Then, you get an email "We have successfully picked up your package. Collected parcel = 1" blah blah.

Weird. Because, nobody picked up shit. It's sitting on my kitchen table.

At some point, all the flash messages, texts, emails, and all that stuff, SOMEBODY has to, you know, actually physically pick up the parcel; took me 3 days one time.

Ebay tracks how fast the seller gets their stuff out and will ding your seller rating for that.

The Uni-Shooter
2oz chilled premium sake
1 piece about 1.5 inches long sushi quality uni
1 raw quail egg yolk
1 small pea-sized dab of prepared wasabi
5 drops soy sauce
1 cucumber stick
1 piece one inch square nori seaweed cut into fine slivers
Pour sake into chilled cocktail glass. Carefully add uni, gently slide quail egg yolk into the glass. Drop in wasabi.
At edge of the glass release drops of soy sauce so that a brown cloud forms in the drink. Stand cucumber stick. Just before serving sprinkle in slivered nori.

The classic example was Enron, which laid off 5% of its employees every quarter, and insisted on "no old tapes", i.e. only your results from the last quarter mattered.

So, as an Enron employee, if you made Enron $10 million one quarter, but nothing the following quarter, you got fired.

I have seen no reports of them or the S&W clone going kablooey and both the 45 LC and the 410 are loaded to relatively low psi easily handled by today's steels and heat treatments.
I personally would not have one but I can see where others only wanting one firearm for both snake killing and self defense might keep one as a home defense firearm. They are definitely not designed as carry weapons.

Suddenly, we were shipping machines that couldn't pass their initial start-up tests. Technicians would arrive in the field and see a pallet of parts that showed up a few days before - the PM was reading the failed test reports and simply shipping the parts to the field to be installed/replaced so he could ship the machine on-time.

The intent to improve process and quality sounds good, but a bug found by a customer that should have been found by the developer (me) or the functional tester (the guys sitting next to me) just indicts me or my colleague as not having done our job. My incentive is to lie and/or blame someone else. My boss always assured me that it would not be used in performance reviews. I told him that was BS and I will always mark that the bug was found at the stage it should have been found. It was the only way to not screw myself or my coworkers. He never asked me about it again. In the end, the company shuttered our whole remote office, which was the actual goal all along.

457 Don't worry. Mr. Burge was driving his restored 1935 Chevrolet suburban. The car was scratched, Mr. Burge was bruised, and the liqueur store was a total loss. This was only partly due to the hit from the car and was mostly attributed to the the sudden disappearance of 244 bottles of Hennessey and 672 bottles of Bourbon (or one full pallet).

Mr. Burge could not be reached form comments as he does not live inside the Austin city limits and journalists from the city rarely return from the wilderness of suburban Texas.

458 Being retired, I'm somewhat out of the loop for the latest management fads. "Goal Setting Management"? From the brief overview in the article, it sounds very similar to that hot-shot-solves-it-all thing called "Management by Objective," (and it's little cousin Management by Commitment).

MBO, and MBC, took all of about three years for the gullible higher-ups to realize that by incentivizing the Objectives, that everything became devoted to achieving those objectives -- at the expense of everything else.

The MBO / MBC fad was only 50 years ago. Is this a data-point for the life-cycle of these 'Hahvahd' MBA brain-farts?

460 So, 60 years after Concorde, Boom plan to make an aircraft that is smaller and slower than the original but also runs on unicorn jizz. Good plan.

463 Boom is a joke, just like all the other supersonic bizjet concepts and EVTOL money suckers.

Boom has no engine. There is not an engine by any manufacturer ready to go. These commercial ventures expect the engine companies to fund the engine themselves. Works for 787 numbers of airliners, not for supersonic bizjets (quantities too low, risk too high).

EVTOLs all lie about what range/endurance/payload they will have. Not to mention the 8 hour recharge cycle screwing up your ops concept.
