That video of fashion in 1920 Berlin reminds me how so many people simply couldn't believe the truth about Hitler. The German people were so literary, cosmopolitan and genteel, they would say. People like Churchill could believe it because he really studied Hitler and his movement, but a lot of people just did not believe it.

People say it was developed by slaves who used dance to mask its martial applications from their masters, but I think that's probably overstated. One of my favorite Eddie Murphy skits was when he talked about being in a club in NY. Some guy bumps into him and he has to make something of it before he's surrounded by his boys.
He does the whole black man routine about making noise and acting tough and he looks over and it's an Italian guy with an evil grin who's like 'Come on' and making a gesturing motion. Then he has to back peddle, which is hilarious. Cracks me up. Posted by: AlaBAMA at August 10, 2022 07:48 PM (mZ3xv) 29
Capoeira.
Looks neat, and is a sort of cultural "fighting style" in Brazil, but it's also a good way to get your ass knocked out by someone who studies an actual fighting style, as evidenced by the video. Like a lot of martial arts, Capoeira was started by people who were lower caste who were not allowed to have weapons or train in fighting. They disguised the practice by making it more dance-like. It's not straight forward fighting because that was forbidden. Posted by: bonhomme at August 10, 2022 07:48 PM (kDGvA) 30

Capoeira has a sort of similarity to Tai Chi.... the "art" itself isn't exactly a fighting tool, but getting good at the art will make you a better fighter. Speed up all the moves in Tai Chi, and you're basically beating the asses off of a crowd of dudes coming at you from all sides. Take all the jumping and cartwheeling out of Capoeira, and you're pretty much just kicking suckers in the noggin. Both were developed in cultures where The Man didn't just disarm you, he didn't even let you train an unarmed fighting technique.

Germany in the 20's was the height of fashion and art and then the Nazis forbid the common folk from wearing the latest fashions. Modern art was also forbidden. Of course just like the pretend socialists elites here those rules didn't apply to them. The wives still wore the latest out of France and Goebbels collected modern art behind Hitler's back.

https://tinyurl.com/4eedpt5d I couldn't believe how tiny most of the costumes were. And Danny Devito's was like something a hobbit would wear! He's a wee little man. They were nice but not as rich and couture-y as the Star Wars costumes. That fight video….lol. I swear that knock out puncher looks like a guy I dated in high school named Andy. Always level headed but it always ended with him standing. He went to our rival school who we played for homecoming my senior year. He was the wide receiver and they beat us like drum in a huge upset. He had to get stitches in his chin on the sidelines during the game without being numbed up so our pictures at the dance told the story. He was smiling so big…proud as a peacock. Tougher than a 2$ steak. The dance after he beat us was interesting because of the respect he was shown. I was the captain of the cheerleading squad and I brought him to the dance; I really thought there would be a fight. For a little podunk Mississippi school, there were a ton of D1 SEC players in that room. D1 athletes just respect each other on a different level than high school heroes.

Hey! I have no idea why you care either, but I don't read minds. Your post was set up as a riddle and I don't like riddles, even as jokes, because they are huge gotchas. Sometimes in Norse and Saxon they were used as a way to call back to common cultural and religious themes, but modern riddles are gotchas, usually using some sort of word-play. Or puns. So the WSJ sent a leftwing prog to do a hit piece on guns in Texas
Elizabeth Findell Reporter, The Wall Street Journal Elizabeth Findell covers Texas for The Wall Street Journal. She previously covered local government for the Austin American-Statesman, the Dallas Morning News and, in the Rio Grande Valley, for The Monitor. "In Uvalde, a usually politically quiet city of 16,000 in a county that voted 60% for former President Donald Trump in 2020, hundreds of locals marched in the streets in 100-degree heat to call for greater gun-control measures. Residents successfully appealed to city leaders in nearby Hondo to cancel a rental of city property for a Friends of the NRA fundraiser. They are brainstorming ways to fight assault-rifle sales within the county." I’ve only had two bad accidents. One was being hit by a drunk driver at 18. That changed my college trajectory since I was unable to play college basketball. And then I ruptured my Achilles’ tendon playing volleyball and told I might not ever be able to go up on my tip toes. I can, so the surgeon can kiss my grits.
