My Country 'Tis Of Thee, Sweet Land Of ONT, Of Thee I Sing

Friday night! Before we get to the memes, I was just remembering last year's Halloween party. Invited a friend of mine who is a mathematician, sent him an invite that clearly said the party was on 31 Oct. He showed up on Christmas.*

Anyhow, lets remember to keep our priorities straight, shall we?

I remember watching the Apollo 11 "live feed" a few years ago. Mike spent a lot of time just trying to find where Neil and Buzz landed. three men doing something nobody had ever done. But they were the tip of the spear. So many others helped get them there. My grandpa was one.

And, I miss rickl.

So he may have the money to pay the 4+45 million, but that's just two verdicts and all of the SH families are suing him individually.

Robert Barnes said earlier that Texas limits punitive damages to something like $75,000 on each count. It's all for media show and the judge's forthcoming documentary film special. (Three cameras in the courtroom, one of them focused all the time on the jury, and a film production crew running the show)

The total dollar amount of the verdicts is bondable in Texas which mean Alex Jones can post a bond and file an appeal, first to the Travis County appeals court, where he'll lose. and then to the Texas Court of Appeals where he'll finally get in front of judges that apply the law fairly.

90 Willowed: This is going to be worse than that German "experiment" they did with sexualizing children. Some lunatic psychologists decided that people had hangups about sex because of the way they were raised, so they'd basically raise children in a highly sexualized environment, with everybody naked and all that. It was a disaster that ruined those children in unspeakable ways. They still try to cover up how much damage that did.

Interesting, that was a big component of the "Manson Family", when interviewed this was part of the breaking down of all barriers and "hangups", to include sexualizing toddlers. Charlie was "any orifice will do" kinda guy, too.

One wonders where, exactly, he picked up all these mad skills at scientifically tested trauma based mind control operations? Well the answer is, the German scientists brought over as part of Operation Paperclip.

Many people are aware of the Rocket Scientists. Less well known are thousands of chemical and biological warfare specialists, and propaganda and psychologist types.

I'm convinced there is a Nexus between government experiments, shadowy groups and spooks, and the complete current lunatic fvckery.

Taylor ham, otherwise known as porkroll goes great with bacon. The bad news is it's seldom seen outside of jersey. There are companies that specialize in shipping it in dry ice for the jersey transplants. You either order a bacon egg and cheese, or a porkroll egg and cheese . Ihe jersey people know what I'm talking about.

It took 79 or 80 attempts, but I like the Cure 81 hams pretty well.

An easy recipe is take a big can of Baked Beans, add a lot of chopped ham, chopped onion, garlic powder, ginger, a big ole shot of Ketchup, and brown sugar. Set that in cast iron pan in the oven and bake at 325 or 350, till you can't stand it anymore and the whole house smells wonderful. Then just a little longer ... At least an hour hour ... and a half

Was wondering: "How the Hell is her husband supposed to deal with the violent deaths of his 23 year old, 8.5 month pregnant wife, unborn son and 1 year old son?"

Well, turns out he was her boyfriend, not husband, and was in the car as well and was killed. They were all on their way to her pediatrician to have a well baby check performed. Two other people were also killed.

The psychopath driver of course survived with minor injuries. May her name be blotted from the Book of Life, painfully. How is any "justice" ever found in such a case.

221 Anybody have tips on making great meals form Aldi and the Food Pantry? Sick of ramen.
Posted by: Jonah at August 05, 2022 10:17 PM (WY8d2)

Aldi kielbasy, jambalaya mix, can of diced tomatoes: without any other veg or spices, this runs about 5 bucks, and makes 6-8 servings.

Frozen ground turkey (1 pound package) taco seasoning pack, box of crispy taco shells or package of corn tortillas, 1 tomato, 1 head of lettuce, 1 block of cheddar or pepper jack cheese: 9 dollars for the ingredients for turkey tacos, with some ingredients left over. Makes 4-6 servings.

Frozen ground turkey, jar of pasta sauce, pasta, bag of salad, container of parmesan: about 10.50 for the ingredients, initial meal makes 4-6 servings and you have leftover ingredients.

You can eat pretty well for around 45 bucks per person from Aldi. Not fancy, not a lot of frills, but pretty well, and pretty healthily.

Kathryn Pugh, a 39-year-old registered nurse who was honored in 2019 with a DAISY Award at Huntington Health in Arcadia, allegedly had too much to drink and perforated her apartment amid a feud with her downstairs neighbor, police said.

(ST fans are not known as a "drinking" crowd.) They would have also carried her out of the hall on their shoulders, only the security squad was too good (thank heavens). She is a very special lady.

342 "That story of the drunk ICU nurse driving her Mercedes through 6 cars at 100 MPH yesterday has stuck with me badly. Can't shake it."

That and the Anne Heche story, she crashed her car 2 or 3 times, burned down a house (the woman and pets inside got out safely) and she is in critical condition with severe burns.

Someone in the neighborhood caught Anne's car speeding down the street on their Ring camera. (You then hear a loud bang as she crashes her car outside the camera's range.) If anyone had been unlucky enough to be walking their dog, kids riding bikes, etc. on that street at that time...

As it is she destroyed someone's home. I'm seeing all these people online send their condolences to her, poor Anne, hope she gets better, she's mentally ill, it's not her fault, blah blah blah. She's no different than the Mercedes woman as far as I'm concerned. Had what appeared to be a vodka bottle in the front seat. Sheer luck no one else was physically hurt or killed.

345 You have to read 31 Oct as 31 Octal (Base 8 numbers) instead of Decimal (Base 10), not as dates.

31 OCT = 25 in Decimal (3x8 +1), or 25 DEC.

379 Early on in the space program, maybe by Apollo, somewhere in there, somebody in the food program decided that, since there is no nutritional value or calories to Coffee, none would be included on orbiting spaceflights.

Wally Schirra (a radio announcer once mis-pronounced his name as "Sky Ray", which pissed him off greatly. The other astronauts would needle him that! LOL

Yeah, anyway as I was saying, Wally was an old Navy guy, and "No Coffee" just wasn't gonna work. He somehow managed to outlaw any Coffee at work for the individual or individuals responsible for their edict. They changed their mind soon enough, and all the flights at least had freeze-dried coffee available.

Some people argue the reason Schirra had the "mutiny" on Apollo 7 was he was going through nicotine withdrawal, and being up a week without ciggies would get rough. All the Mercury astronauts were tobacco users, exceot for John Glenn, iirc. I'm surprised Wally didn't bring a can of Cope

397 "I don't think Red Army soldiers in WWII turned their noses up at Spam."

More of a pork stew than spam, russkis called (and still call) it "tushonka", which basically means some kind of stew. Cooked pork, lard, and spices in a can. Good eatin', actually, in the field, in a country and army living on the margin.

Best thing is that, up at least until July 1943 (perhaps beyond), the Red Army soldat's sarcastic name for this and other Lend-Lease food was "second front". As in, in lieu of an actual second front, the western allies at least sent pork stew in a can.

But anecdotal including directly observed (obviously long after the war) evidence does not suggest Red Army soldiers were indifferent or unappreciative of the American help. On the contrary. And actually a couple of outfits now produce reproduction tushonka rations, and other WWII Red Army rations, I guess for history buffs, re-enactors, and collectors.

404 That Shellaroni recipe sounds doable. I bought two ginormous bags of Egg Noodles from that Amish place, and several cans of beef. Thought that would be good for emergencies.

One day I got a hankerin' for beef and noodles, and thought to give it a try. Well those egg noodles never did seem to cook, took forever. Older pasta does that, still. Then, I opened a can of that beef. Jeeze Louis. It wasn't "bad" in the sense of unsafe to eat, but it smelled nasty AF, just this permeating odor. I chucked it out.

Always try out your emergency foods in a non-emergency.

The latter was nicknamed "Hitler's Secret Weapon" because it was nearly inedible and indigestible. The ingredients don't sound bad, but the Army requested to Hershey that it should taste little better than a raw potato, and by all accounts, they succeeded. The idea was sound, it was inspectable item - for emergencies, and if it tasted good, people would eat it when there wasn't an emergency.

409 When we were in the dirt business, it was "fill dirt" vs "top soil." Today if you buy retail "growth media," it's carefully blended to make sure you're getting enough clay to stretch the vendor's profit, but has just enough loam to insure grass will grow in it. Viability still varies widely. The great occasional deals on topsoils of the fast-growth era are no more.

When prime farmland was being stripped off for a mall, we'd stockpile that material on our spare lots. Once a hot-shot well connected builder was putting in an inflation shack next door to our storage lot, and just ordered his bulldozer guy to use our dirt. It was worth thousands, even in the 70's. We learned from that experience.

422 I started watching a lady on yootoob canning beef in jars. (Jarring?) Ugh. Had to turn it off. I'm sure it's fine as far as being safe to eat but no. Just no.

When you can something with beef in it (we do soups and stews all the time), you have to use a pressure canner, and it's a process-takes a couple of hours. That kind of stuff can't safely be water bath canned.

425 Any of the Morons or Ettes here familiar with older gas ranges? I am rigging in an old 5-burner Kenmore here at Peon Manor, and I need to know how the oven works. Does it have a pilot light that burns continually, or do you crack the oven control valve, and then light the pilot for each use? The top burners have continuously-burning pilots.

426 That was from their rooftop concert, I don't think they had even played together for several years at that point. I am not defending the Beatles, because I think they are the single most overrated band in human history, but there are reasons they weren't at their peak in that video

They were never worthy of the adulation the public lavished on them. This video was made at the very end of the group, but if you rewind, and give an honest appraisal of one of their earliest songs, "You Can't Do That", it's just as cringe, just as vapid, and gum smacking as their rooftop performance.

They had a few catchy jingles over the years, but that's it. Their drummer looks like a reservoir tip condom flopping around with a full load.

I want to avoid "always-on" pilot lights. Save a little gas. If the oven proves to be of the "always-on" type, I will insert a small ball valve into the oven pilot line, and make it accessible from the storage bin to the left of the oven door. Open the door, turn the valve on, light pilot, use oven, turn valve off when done.

That condition, on older vehicles, can be caused by using a non-vented gas cap when a vented one is called for. Fuel pump suction caves in the tank, and quite often the bottom center caves up, and blocks the movement of the gauge float arm. I have seen it happen. Modern cars with fuel injection usually don't have that problem, as they are designed to be non-vented.

So, about 11:30, I get back down here and start cooking that mess of corn. Hadn't soured. 2 - 3 quarts total, I'd guess (cutting all that off is some work -- either of my two grandmothers could do that and make it look easy. They'd run circles around me).

I get it to a simmer, adding water and stirring like a mofo -- enough starch in it that it will try to stick and cake if you let the bottom get too hot and don't get just the right amount of water.

Then boom, power goes off again. It could've been worse. I did get the corn up to simmering temp. Had it only been partially warmed, say 100F or 120F or something, that would've ruined it.

5PM before it came back on again. I finished cooking, and it was still good. Damned good, although fate fought me on that.

We're freezing that. Half of that batch went in a freezer bag, the other half is for eatin' now.

You can can cut-off corn. But it's tricky from what I gather. They recommend only pint jars. My maternal grandmother had a bumper corn crop way back in the late '30s, and canned it all. In quart jars. Huge amount of work, and a bounty of corn.

*It all spoiled* Every last drop. My mother remembers her crying for days about that. She was inconsolable.

Whole kernel is fine in quarts. But the cut-off/cream can be tricky apparently. You've got to make sure it all gets to the right temp.

484 Oh, and I worked in a cannery for six summers and I hate canned and frozen corn. I will eat an ear from time to time, but otherwise bleagh.
My wife brought home a case of it she got for free, and I cut it all off and froze it. We still have some left. I mostly use it for corn chowder in the winter.

485 Best Three Beatles songs? Worst? Posted By Jim

The pre Sgt. Peppers era records had a bunch of clunker covers; that was the nature of LPs at the time. three good songs and press it. I really love their music in the period because it was live band rock and roll, and holy smokes could they play. The second half was all about the studio. The music became far more complex but it lost the urgency plus tempos slowed down. Still, the melodies, the arrangements, the perfect wedding of words and music, and pushing what was possible is stunning. Nothing like that had ever occurred before.

Some 1st Half Favs: Hard Day's Night, Rock n' Roll Music (Cover done live in the studio - mind blowing), Here, There and Everywhere.

Some 2nd Half Favs: Dear Prudence, Hey Jude, While My Guitar Gently Weeps.

486 Worst Three Beatles songs?

--------

A lot of the Beatles songs I didn't hear for the first time until they were covered by other artists in the apparently horrible 1978 movie (never saw, but universally panned) "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

I like most of the Beatles' songs, but THE ONE song I simply cannot stand, whether it's the original Beatles or Aerosmith cover is "Come Together." It's like "Aqualung" -- I must immediately kill it ... before it multiplies.

Fair enough. It is one of my favorites especially the solo section. It seethes with energy.

Re cream corn, or as we call it, cut-off corn. Art to it. Some people like to put actual cream in it. I do not like that one bit. Bacon grease, salt, and pepper, and it's heaven when picked and prepared at just the right stage.

The store bought "cream corn", whether frozen or canned is indeed inedible. And why, I don't know. There is no comparison to corn right out of the garden cut off and cooked. Frozen, we've had it last two years and still be delicious.

Everyone's taste is there on, but I would love to you to taste some of this stuff. If you don't like it, that's that, but you have tried real cut-off corn until you've had it out of the garden.

Come together blows vicious ass. Tull's Aqualung is fun for a guitar player, especially the lead. Come together is pretty much fun for nobody.

491 I am really perplexed by this judgement. Jones is a lunatic and the shit he said about the Sandy Hook massacre was insanity. But as near as I can tell he never defamed those massacred or their families. Personality, I find Jones to be an offensive asshole and I deal with by not paying any attention to him. Freedom of speech includes the right say very offensive things.

Exactly. The first thing I said to my wife was it wasn't like he killed anybody and gets to walk away free as so many scum do today.

And how 'bout all the Lefty loons who called Trump literally Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini, issued death threats & wished for assassination against him, held up severed heads of him, et. al.?

Had James' Hodgkinson lived, as did Rand Paul's neighbor and likely Brett Kavanaugh's assassin, what slap on the wrist would he have gotten?

Free speech, as the rest of the Constitution, is dead. By 2030, the plan is that YOU will be dead -- and you will be happy ... but first you will eat the bugs.

492 Beatles constantly evolved. And immensely, and very very fast by today's standards. The whole recording career was 62-69. Seven or eight years. Incredible range of styles, even on the same album sometimes. And they were all only in their twenties and self taught as they did it. It's very rare that high art and high commercial abilities converge.

I've bought some store-bought ears of corn, a dozen or so, and cut that off. Much better than the frozen or canned by a long shot, but still nowhere near as good as fresh out of the garden.

Green corn in the "roastin' ear" stage shows the miracle of modern fresh vegetable commercial supply systems. And we've got idiots who have no clue about how all that works fixin' it now, making it greener and all that good stuff.

Such ears of corn have the highest respiration rate by far of any of the common vegetables. The fact they can get it out of the field and into the grocery stores without ruining, is amazing.

But quality does decline, and it's nothing like fresh out of the garden.

One measure of significant music is if it survives over time. Most assuredly The Beatles music has done that and as a result their songs and recordings have become part of the enduring literature. The tribute band phenomenon, I think, is laying the groundwork for time when the classic rock music becomes part viewed more as classical music. A fantastic example of this the The Analogues performing the White Album live.

499 All the really good guitar solos, albeit what few there are you will find, were done by Paul. Without exception. Even on songs that George wrote - like Taxman.

Honorable mention for "worst" - and there are some bad ones, might be the live "All you need is love" debacle. It was a huge deal at the time, one of the first worldwide broadcasts, using satellites iirc.

Stupid inane hippy dippy BS, and then George choked on a solo. He just bleated a note. I love the guy, no homo, but he didn't have the killer lead instinct like Paul did.

John completely flipped his noodle on too much LDS after about 1966, sorry. So did Brian Wilson, who spent years in bed, and wearing a bathrobe everywhere he went. Brian's children said his favorite song was "Be My Baby" - and he'd play it dozens or even hundreds of times a day. Hopefully with headphones.

505 The thing about Pete Conrad and his first words on the lunar surface - "It might be a small step for Neil ..."

He'd actually taken on a bet with a foreign news bimbo, who was absolutely convinced that the astronauts were instructed exactly what to say by NASA, and Pete wanted to convince her otherwise, and so told her exactly what he was going to say, and then went ahead and said it. She never paid off on the bet, is my understanding.

Conrad was killed in a motorcycle accident in California, he was a real character. Always wanted to meet those guys. If you've ever been around test pilots, they are the best of the best. Listen to him rattle off the cockpit dashboard caution and warning and caution lights when they got struck by lightning just after launch. LOL!! I think rock as classical music has a way to go, it isn't institutionalized yet and the rock n' roll equivalents to orchestras and smaller groups are just beginning to emerge. Those tribute bands are doing the heavy lifting here and I don't think they realize how important their work is. One show that got me started on this path was when I saw the Zombies reunite and play the entire Oracle and Odessey opus live. It was revelatory.

Jones got nailed by a corrupt Travis county judge. There was no jury trial on the facts of the case. The judge ruled for a summary judgement for the plaintiffs claiming some vague failure of Jones to provide discovery.

So where did the plaintiffs get all their evidence of Jones' alleged torts then? *narrator - from Jones who turned over massive amounts of discovery and multiple lengthy depositions of him and InfoWars staff*

Unprecedented for a judge to order summary judgement against the defendant in a defamation case for alleged discovery withholdings. It's like as if the NCAA gave SMU the death penalty for alleged paperwork errors.

The corrupt judge then further penalized Jones by not allowing him to put on a defense in the damages part of the action. Judge has already ruled him liable and the jury is hearing evidence to help them decide how much.

Brings to mind another measure of greatness though. Go through the '60s/'70s rock catalog now. ALL of it (would take huge computers, of course).

Extract the numbers of covers from each, what's been played between now and then, what's being played now.

518 Corrupt judge allows the bumbling prosecutor to present evidence that has nothing at all to do with measuring damages to the plaintiffs. However, it does play nicely to the movie crew cameras setup in her courtroom for the eventual documentary. Such movie crew cameras are positioned out of sight of the court tv camera. And because it was said in court, the film company is protected from slander/libel/defamation claims later.

Judge rules that she alone has sole authority as to whom may use the court tv camera feed. Conveniently, Rekieta gets shutdown for the exact length of the damages portion of the trial on vague TOS violations.

Virtually none of Jones' objections are sustained while virtually all of plaintiff's objections are sustained.

If John McEnroe was in that Travis county courtroom, he'd be yelling and screaming about the stupid, unfounded, clearly boneheaded judge's calls too.

519 The Beatles thread has rightly expanded to 20th Century American music generally. 20th AM completely upended the entire previous 1000 years of western music. All of it is profoundly original and rightly took over and dominated everything. Several things worked together to make this happen. The music lived in the moment, or the voice, instead of being architected, recordings democratized who could make music and have preserved, and must subtlety AM lives in the offbeat. Because of this offbeat emphasis AM physically moves you; it is why it makes you move. The most profound part is at its deepest core it is joyful music. Movement and optimism, as I see it, are two core elements of the American experience. And just like that we get the Beatles.

520 I'm reminded of a dark joke from the days of segregation in the south...
A black professor returns from his job at the University in the north to vote in the South. The election official wants to test him to see if he can read, so he grabs a volume from the encyclopedia for the prof to read and the prof reads a section from it. The official then grabs book in Latin and gives it the prof, who proceeds to start reading it. Ditto with book in Greek. The official then leaves to go to the local library and returns a few minutes later with a book in Chinese. Handing it to the prof, the official says, "and What does THIS say?"
To which black prof says, "a black man can't vote in the South".

534 I'm dropping of a jar of smoked salmon and a jar of my strawberry-blueberry jam with cinnamon at the state fair tomorrow for judging. Last time I got an honorable mention for the jam, but this year I think this is the best salmon we've ever produced, and the jam tastes just like pie. First prize wins $7 and bragging rights. Wish me luck?
Posted by: tcn in AK

Hell yes. Bragging rights are priceless.

But not as great as having the satisfaction of knowing you are supremely skilled at something. What am I saying? That's bonkers, bragging rights. done.

Got the link to that album then, at least? Penance, you see. Penance.

You don't need to be a lawyer to appalled at how the judge treated jones like child. The only parts of the trial i watched were him testify and her demeanor towards him in front of the jury was awful. In other news, he is a pretty shitty witness. Alex Jones is no Johnny Depp on the stand and that didn't help. Plus Jones' lawyer sending every bit of privileged communications to the Plaintiff's didn't help him on the stand.

Yeah, an own goal moment. Well, maybe not. Being privileged, it can't rightfully be used in court. Only Jones himself can waive that privilege, a mistake by his lawyers cannot waive that privilege, per Barnes.

And it had no bearing on the measurement of damages that the jury was hearing evidence on. The judge should have shut that down.

I watched that hearing today. She was almost gleeful in telling Jones to pack sand. That bothered me greatly.

Hillary's vast right-wing conspiracy was a conspiracy.

Hillary's Russia shit morphed into a generally accepted conspiracy by the left wing

This sums up the crux of what is perplexing me. It isn't illegal to be distasteful or hold whacky ideas. If we refuse to defend him getting a fair hearing then everything gets wobbly real fast. That is one part of my instinctive reaction to this trail.

Speaking of peeing. I just stepped outside to pee. I turn on the corner floods, so I can see where I'm aimin'. And lo and behold, not 10' away from my peein' corner, stands a doe, a deer, a female deer.

She's grazing. And further lo and behold, a few feet behind her is a fawn, a kid, a very young deer.

I pee in her direction. She moves on. Damned cats are out there, just lookin' at her. Not doing a damned thing, just lookin'.

My double row eee-lectric fence has been keeping them out. I was worried about last night's power outage, but no deer breeched.

On of those damned cats, young Purry Mason, decided to come back inside with me when I finished peein'. As I typed the above, he was playing his favorite game, annoy Publius at the computer by demanding his attention be directed at Purry.

Oh, he wants some treats. He's gently chewing at my typing fingers. These damned cats are the most spoiled on the planet. You can blame me. And Miley.

Purry lets me know when he's hungry by chewing on my fingers.

Uh-huh. And rowdy students at sporting events often display a hand gesture known as the "shocker", extending 3 fingers while holding the thumb and ring finger to the palm. The explanation for this is a sex act usually defined as "two in the pink and one in the stink", which brings us right back to the double entendre in the 7-up ad.

562 I have to comment here on the Jones thing. What troubles me greatly is the concept of defamation, that is a doctrine used to remedy wrongs against an individual, has been used by a defined "group." So they're giving a group the right to a defamation claim, yet the individuals in that group cannot be subject to the "public person" exception.

The rub of this, and why the Jones verdict is so, so anti-American free speech, is that Jones was commenting on a public EVENT. There has always been, and should always be, the right of anyone to say anything, however Batshit Crazy, about a public/newsworthy EVENT.

563 The "Country Roads" meme explains things. I happened to be at Oktoberfest on a business trip. There was a huge hall with lots of people drinking giant beers. Great party atmosphere, but when that song came on, everyone got on the tables to sing along. They all knew the lyrics. Good times.

564 In the movie, "Everything You Want to Know About Sex, But Were Afraid To Ask", there is a scene where two giant boobies are roaming the countryside. Of course, the local townspeople fled the boobies in a similar manner.
