16 Here's a summary from a webpage:

[]iJoshua Reynolds’s portrait transforms a sight common to the streets of eighteenth-century London—a child worker lighting torches—into an allegory. “Link boys,” as they were known, were paid a small sum to light fires along London’s streets so that inhabitants could see the way from their doors to their carriages. These youngsters traveled through the city at nightfall and could become victims of abuse. The lack of social status of working-class women and children at the time made them particularly vulnerable to mistreatment in the modernizing city. Rather than romanticizing one of the city’s many street urchins, Reynolds allegorizes the plight of these children, puckish Cupids with wings blackened by their often tragic experience of exploitation— sexual as well as socioeconomic.

Posted by: Archimedes at August 08, 2022 09:34 AM (/NCI4)

17 A "Link Boy" is a kid who carries a torch or lamp in front of people to light the way at night. This was before street lamps!

53 A practical question: How does Cupid get his wings out the back of his coat? Specially cut openings?

It reminds me of Stephen King's aside in his Danse Macabre. He was teaching about horror fiction in the late '70s, including a focus on Ira Levin's Rosemary's Baby. One of the students commented that about 10 years after his birth, Rosemary's kid would be the only one on his Little League team requiring a custom cap for his horns and gloves for his claws. . . .

154 It's extremely difficult to cheat on taxes, anymore, simply due to everything being tracked electronically.

Therefore, creating a bunch of new IRS agents is for reasons other than enforcing the tax code.

The justification floated, all these new IRS agents will generate 20 billion more in taxes, or whatever the number is, is laughable, on its face. I mean, seriously, that number was pulled out of thin air, because there's no way anyone can really know how much isn't being paid in taxes.

Anyway, the creation of a bunch of new IRS agents is definitely of malevolent intent.

Much of Shakespeare was mis-transcribed due to his sloppy handwriting. Visiting London Wm. Shakespeare, who was known to be afraid of the dark could not fall asleep due to worrying about when the local link boys would arrive to light up the dark streets. One night after tossing and turning and faunching and fretting until way past midnight, he arose, lit a candle and tried to compose some rhyming couplets, as was his wont. In the wee hours, when he finally heard Cupid the winged link boy coming down the street he yawned, and stretched, breathed a long sigh of relief and penned the now-famous lines...

"To sleep, perchance to dream - ay, there's the cherub!"

Posted by: All Hail Eris

One I liked was The Days of the French Revolution by Christopher Hibbert but, beware!, this is not a typical, chronological history. Rather, it selects a number of specific days, seven if I remember correctly, that were turning points. Scary that such broad consequences can flow from such narrow, seemingly inconsequential circumstances.

P.S. A good, young adult, fictional, time travel treatment is Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly.

During the often-heated interview, Mr Waters tore apart Mr Smerconish's suggestion World War 2 was won thanks to intervention from the US, arguing Russia had already secured most of Eastern Europe by the time the allied forces spread through the continent.

He also dismissed concerns about China's growing hostility towards Taiwan, insisting the island is part of China.

The Pink Floyd co-founder said: "You have no role as liberators." [...]

The Pink Floyd guitarist, who appeared to become increasingly frustrated, snapped: "Thank God the Russians had already won the b***dy war almost by then. Don't forget almost 23 million Russians died protecting you and me from the Nazi menace."

The problem with lithium ion battery fires is the high heat caused by thermal runaway which becomes a self-sustaining feature for the thermal runaway. The best practice to date is cooling the batteries as much as possible which is the reason for the water.
