Top Story

  • The HP Pavilion Plus 14 could be the new best small laptop, taking over from the HP Pavilion Aero. (PC Magazine)

Fully kitted out it has 16GB of RAM (enough for most users, though I'd like a 32GB option), 1TB of SSD, a 2880x1800 90Hz OLED display, and an Intel i7-12700H with 6 Performance cores and 8 Efficiency cores.

I/O consists of two USB-C ports (not Thunderbolt, but they support DisplayPort video and charging), two USB-A ports, HDMI, microSD, and a headphone jack. For some reason they're all on the opposite side to my current Dell Inspiron 14 - well, except USB-A where both conveniently have one on each side.

And it has the Four Essential Keys.

That configuration will set you back $1029 in the US (on sale right now, normally $1229), or $2699 in Australia.

Which... Wow. Shipping sure is expensive, huh?

The reason I'd still consider it is that it's 30% faster than my current laptop single-threaded, and two and a half times as fast multi-threaded. It's faster than my full-size Inspiron 16, and a lot lighter.

I previously asked why companies like HP, if they were only going to import one model of a laptop, didn't just choose the high-end model so that we weren't stuck with low-end specs. I guess this is why.

Amelia has slowed down at the moment, so it's a bit hard to say. Pekora and Fubuki from the JP branch look like a sure thing before the end of the year, and possibly also Kobo, Hololive's massively successful experiment to create an Indonesian Gura clone.

34 Initial plans were for a lot more Saturn V launches, approximately 120 were envisioned. Manned mission to Mars for 1984-1986 (optimal time window to minimize energy expenditure).

The lunar orbit rendezvous or LOR was the best method to get there quickly but in some ways, was kind of a dead end. Once Pres. Kennedy's mission was accomplished, the funding dried up and they went with the flying brick (Shuttle) and other boring stuff. I agree there should be tourist flights to the Moon by now, it would have been routine.

Until Elon, the price to put 1 pound into orbit was north of $10k. Tack on added costs to fly to the moon and back, and their isn't a long list of tourists well heeled enough. Iianm, Elon's goal with Starship/SuperHeavy is to get the cost down to around $200. It's already under $1k. Sans inflation.

105 Besides, the kiss between Uhura and Kirk in "Plato's Stepchildren" was *not* the first interracial kiss on network TV. It might have been the first between black and white; but Robert Culp, I think, had kissed France Nuyen, his future wife, on an episode of I Spy two years before. Asian-white is still interracial.

121 This is the time of year that the orbweavers make giant ceiling-to-floor webs. One is living in my right sideview mirror on the car.  He makes a big web overnight, then when I go for a drive he hangs on while the web whips and tatters down to one thick thread in the wind.  He spins around "whoa! whoa! whoa!" dangling from the end.  Then I get home and he tucks himself back into the mirror.  He keeps getting bigger, so I guess he's OK with the abuse.
