Saturday Hobby, Craft and Bodging Thread

Greetings all. Hope your weekend's going well. As for me, I managed to strip wallpaper off a wall where our bookcase/wall unit will go, since the furniture is set to arrive perhaps as early as Tuesday. I'll prime and paint tomorrow. If only I could put myself in fast forward mode like all those videos on YouTube. Speaking of which. . .

Anyway, let's all head to the garage, basement, shop space, craft room, studio or wherever it is you go to lose yourself for a few hours and get creative. What projects are you all working on or have planned?

NOTE: This is not an open thread. Please restrict comments to hobbies and such.

First up, I just discovered this guy's channel and it's a nice tutorial about scratch-bashing a spaceship from concept art. He uses mostly sheet styrene for the body, and it's one of the most versatile model making materials around.

For you painters, you'll look at clouds from both sides now. Or at least with only three colors with this easy technique.

Nicely scratch built ship model of the Black Pearl from Pirates of the Caribbean. Looks mostly to be made from scrap materials too. This is the first video of a three part series.

Considering the skills it takes to make model airplanes the old fashioned way, out of stick and tissue, it's amazing what people are doing with things like foam board and depron. And in scale, nonetheless like this Reaper drone.

All I can say is, I want this guy around when the apocalypse comes. That he was able to rebuild an engine with only the barest minimum of tools, let alone remember how everything is supposed to go back together is insane.

The Ace of Clay returns with another sculpting video, this time with an original character of his own. Lots of techniques on how to create characters from Sculpey.

I love when people restore old items and rescue them from the dumpster. Here's a great old lamp that would fit in in most modern or eclectic settings.

Brit Carl Rogers and his father are restoring/refurbishing an old French farmhouse (must be nice to have shit-tons of money, no?). Here's part 2 of the reconstruction of an old oak staircase. I admire his craftsmanship. Look at the other videos, especially how he dismantled and reconstructed a massive tile roof and the ancient timber frames holding it all up.

President Joe Biden on Saturday tested positive for Covid-19 once again after consecutive days of testing negative for the virus, his physician said.

Biden, 79, is experiencing no new symptoms and "continues to feel quite well," Dr. Kevin O'Connor said in a memo shared by the White House.

But he will nevertheless "reinitiate strict isolation procedures," the presidential physician wrote.

Biden, who is fully vaccinated and has received two booster shots of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, tweeted Saturday afternoon that he was asymptomatic but would isolate "for the safety of everyone around me."

"I'm still at work, and will be back on the road soon,"the president’s tweet said.

[sorry to repeat what someone else probably already posted. 'On the road soon', maybe another bicycle ride]

9 Maritime Restoration Update:

Ahoy, landlubbers!

I'm sitting in the cockpit on a glorious sunny SoCal afternoon watching the dinghies and paddleboarders go past and quaffing alcohol.

l need to attack the 12v electrical system. I installed a fresh marine battery last week but for some reason there is still no juice to the 12v devices onboard. The new battery does start the engine like a champ though. So I got something out of the deal.

I'm ordering new canvas this week. No telling how long it will be to get it delivered and installed, but better late than never.

My budget is pretty much busted at this point but YOLO.

13 Tonight's hobbies, at least for me, include:

1. Finishing up the cleaning/tweaking/upgrading of my Anycubic Mega S. I'm finishing up the extruder now, then I should be back in business.

2. Testing the one battery I still have for my Typhoon H drone. (I have a spare on order, but since it's coming from China, I have no idea if/when it will ever arrive). In the meantime since I'm deathly afraid of having my drone up to 400 feet, and getting a low battery alarm, I'm testing the only battery I have....and some lens filters for the camera.

I replaced the absent 6 foot length of 12" flex duct in our Sussex place's A/C with a barely insulated substitute. Summer weather runs another six weeks, so we'll take the utility costs' hit for that time and schedule replacing it with the real deal, together with a new blower, to occur sometime in mid-September into October.

I ended up tearing down all the sheetrock. They even papered the ceiling. Tape measure, knife, and screw gun. With friends redid it quickly. I paid for the taping and spackling. I'm an IT guy. Taping and spackling was a bridge too far. Still looks good. I hate wallpaper. Why paper a friggin' ceiling?! I mean wtf! And father-in-law did wall paper. I've rebuilt quite a few engines like that. I do some things to keep parts organized and may take some notes, but most of it is from remembering how it came apart.

42 Still collecting the hymn stories to use in the worship service. The Protestant hymn singers may know this one: "Take Time to Be Holy." This article has a good explanation of why the writer chose the words, and the last paragraph is lovely about how God can work through things that may didn't seem so significant at the time but were given as an offering to God. In my time as a church attender I don't remember the pastors explaining the hymns so I am enjoying doing so and some people find it helpful:

79 I've been planning on making some powder measure scoops for reloading modern ammo and for charging muzzleloaders. The ones for modern ammo would be if I find The Load for a certain round that call for an amount the Lee scoops don't match, such as the powder load for 38 special wadcutter ammo. Yes, I have adjustable measures that work fine but I like using scoops. A couple of pieces of dowel, a hand drill and some glue should do the trick.

The muzzleloader charger would be a whittled whimsy. Perhaps a wizard or gnome head with a tall, conical hat. Whittle the figure, cut off the hat and drill a hole for the desired powder charge. Drill a hole through the length of the hat to act as a funnel and put a pivot to let the hat slide over the top of the figure. That would level the powder charge. Absolutely not necessary as I have brass measures that do the job. It just sounds like fun to try.

Never played rugby, but in junior high and high school we had pick-up tackle football games during the lunch period. Lots of scrapes and bruises, but no serious injuries. I was a smaller kid, but I had a blast knocking the tougher kids in the dirt. Was never bullied after that.

101 Good afternoon Horde.

I did something very uncharacteristic. At the insistence ( begging) of a friend I went to an evening crochet group. Friend wanted to start a handbag, and this group was all working on one she liked. They called the session a crochet along.

Naturally you don't make the whole thing in one session, but this seemed to move very slowly. One woman carried on about the colors chosen by others and got annoyed that a few were sharing a pattern, which she deemed unethical. The company that sold the pattern is not sponsoring the group, so her concern about that and yarn choices seemed out of place to me.
Anyone have experience with group crafting. I doubt I'll do this again but I'm in til Barbara finishes her bag.

I used to hate painting, but I'm too poor to hire it out. Eventually I mastered the two-tone paint job, and eventually expanded it to three or more. It's all about picking a single color for the figure and then adding just enough accents to make it look other than monochrome.

I find that a good wash and having a nice flocked base does wonders for overall appearance.

163 I used to hate painting, but I'm too poor to hire it out. Eventually I mastered the two-tone paint job, and eventually expanded it to three or more. It's all about picking a single color for the figure and then adding just enough accents to make it look other than monochrome.

I find that a good wash and having a nice flocked base does wonders for overall appearance.

I use windsor and newton peat brown artist ink for washes for all of my military miniature figures. I have used them for over 20 years and have gotten nice consistent repeatable results. Paint the figure as normal let it dry and brush on the ink and let it dry. Nice deep shading without a glossy finish. You do have to dab and jab the figure with q-tips a bit to keep the ink from pooling in the low spots of the model though.

165 146 Terro Liquid Bait ant traps.
We had ant invasions like crazy. I bought these ant traps that aren't like the others. Ants swarm all over these traps, and it's really kind of disgusting looking for about 3 days.
Then, suddenly, they are all gone, every one, and they stay gone.

I've used home-made borax solution and cotton balls. Ants tear off the poisoned fibers, take it back to the colony, and feed it to the queen and kiddos.

When I was in 4th grade or so, I was avidly into army men and sometimes took them outside. By trial and error I figured out how to make breastworks out of twigs.

Whenever I had access to a sandbox, I'd immediately fortify a corner of it. Normally, you can't do decent trenches in sand, but with those twigs, you can get some nice lines and build them pretty quickly.

I guess I never got over that, which is why I do minis.

I use Tamiya paints and have since the 1990s when I first started. After priming I'll do a base coat, then paint hands and feet. Depending on what else is needed, the usual layering and I finish with a black wash that uses a bottle so old I can't remember when I started it. It's just Flat Black with water. Sometimes I do custom washes.

I like how it makes my troops look dirty, as if they've been on campaign for a while. I've got a company of Germans that pull double duty as Imperial Guard.

257 No; I looked at pictures. I think they're tiny ants. I will have to go get some stuff. I admire the energy of YD's family in getting rid of bugs, but I live in an old house and we get of bugs. I can vouch for the terro ant bait stations. We have been battling ants for the past month with the drought here. I put the terro out and they all swarm the bait station and then never come back after a day or so. Currently we have three different sizes of any colonies invading our house. One is fire ants, one is big black ants and one is sort of like a grease ant looking thing. This morning they were all three cooperating in invading our trash can in the kitchen.

270 When I was working all the time, I had hobbies, but since dialing back my 'hobbies' take up more time than 'work', at this point. So I'm not sure I'd call them hobbies. And they've become things I do semi-professionally, so are those hobbies anymore? Although honestly I have deliberately not pursued them as money-making, as I am not willing to do them for other people, for money, they're mine and mine alone.
Hm. So all this art and writing and study I guess are my hobbies, as they don't pay for themselves...

280 I have started playing with cord and rope making, it is amazing what fiber you can twist into a cord and what can make a rope.
My current favorite is using young blackberry vines fibers to make cord, the stuff is much longer than the corn shucks I have used before. I am also about to make a rope spinner, which is a wheel I can nail to a post, that has a hook on the rim I can start spinning rope out of straw.

And yes, I know all about Rumpelstiltskin, thank you.

re:hymns and their meanings
Way back, almost in another life it feels like, I was an interpreter for a small deaf community in our church. Being a liturgical church we had 2 interpreters, one for the responses and hymns and creeds etc and one for the pastor. I did the responses and hymns, and I loved it. It really made me think about what the hymnist was saying. I still love hymns and I still will sign some, just for pleasure and praise. Some hymns say so much. Some not so much. Not a huge fan of what passes for worship music these days. But I'm over 29 so . . .

285 Infidel, That is a beautiful staircase and quite a story attached to it. My hobby today is trying to eradicate a bunch of sugar ants that have invaded one of my kitchen cabinets. Last night I emptied the whole double cabinet out and scrubbed it from top too bottom. Then I applied a light rinse of white vinegar. This morning when I looked inside they're were more ants than the night before. I just bought some Raid ant traps that are safe for kitchen use and I have placed them in the corners of the cupboard, I really hope they work.
Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at July 30, 2022 06:17 PM (a4EWo)

I've had decent luck using dry cinnamon in places where ants come in from outside on hot days looking for food or water. It messes up the scent trails and it isn't poison to people or animals in moderation.

Back when I lived in the Midwest there was a similar homebrew mix of borax and cocoa to get roaches.

Nothing sadder than modern collectors that buy the complete sets in bulk, leave them in the packaging and put them in a warehouse until they die for the 'value'.

If you like cards, experience the cards. If you want a good investment, by stocks or something.

I collected BB cards for a few years in the 70s, remember scraping up money for a pack, getting annoyed that I got 2 San Diego Padres players for every Reds player (the hometown team), reading all the stats and information a dozen times walking home from the Pony Keg where I got them...

291 the guy who rebuilt the engine for his boat had some chops. I like the way he lapped the valves in the process of putting the engine back together.

Some real old school stuff done during the rebuild.

I might add, notice the one constant during the whole boat building process?

Electricity was the indispensable power source.

Great video. Thanks for sharing, J.J.
