Toledo War is very good. I believe one man was stabbed with a pocket knife and required bandages, and there were several POWs, eventually released.
I prefer the Johnson County War simply because I would rather be in Wyoming than anywhere near Toledo.

visited the military useum in Cardiff, Wales. they have a big honk___ lance with a sharp edge. got a cross bar at the top to keep the victims from coming down the lance. got a story about a Welsh private standing i formation while Fwench heavy horse set up for a charge through the Welsh foot. Private steps out of formation runs forward about 20 yards and issues a challenge in appropriately accented Welsh based english. Frog accepts and begins a mano e mano charge at the private. Private neatly steps aside, plants the lance in the ground and anchor it with his boot. spears the horse, drops the lance, draws his saber and beheads the Frog. retrieves his lance and strolls back to formation. the Fwench lost that battle because the private took their nerve away and skeert 'em.

I watched a video put out by the folks that produce "The Chosen" (not sure if anyone is familiar, it's a streaming mini-series that depicts the life and times of Jesus) which recorded the reactions of a bunch of Gen Z kids watching the series.
I was somewhat dismayed (and perhaps they were selected for this reason, IDK?) that nearly every one of the 10 or so kids described how they suffered from a mental disorder or some broken home life.
I wonder how good it is in the big picture to categorize so many kids at such a young age as "suffering" from this or that? I'd say it's a good thing in being aware, but yet the suicide rates at that age are climbing dramatically. I have attributed a lot of that to social media, but I wonder if putting all these kids in psychotherapy and on meds isn't exacerbating the problem.
I was kinda awkward, got switched between lots of schools and got beaten a lot by my dad as a kid, but I'm glad that no one intervened, it forced me to adapt and develop coping mechanisms. I'm able to laugh at adversity.

Yeah I'm always weirded out when I hear about a 7 year old being "depressed".
I'm not that old (seriously) but I remember fondly a time when kids had no fathom of such things. Maybe mid to late teenagers should understand depression but a 7 year old doesn't have depression and stress like an adult does.
And I say this as someone with a high respect for psychology, (the thing, not the profession). A 7 year old can have trauma but that's not the same as "stress".

I mean there is nothing wrong with sharing your feelings, but it ought to be to a chosen few that you trust their advice. I don't get telling everyone you have even a mild work acquaintance with.
My main issue though, is if you "name it", that is to say that you get diagnosed with something, then it's as if you are helpless to your world, fated by the fickle brain patterns to feel bad.
Screw that. Suffer, adapt, overcome. Grow. Develop coping skills. Harness your anger and use it as power. Recognize suffering and be empathetic. These are life skills.

Fuckup #1: I borrowed a live trap from a friend, with a view to trapping the feral kitten I saw hiding in an old truck body down at the bottom of my lot. Took it out of the back of the Suburban, set it on the grass nearby. Later went to use the Suburban to go to town for a can of paint, and ran right over it. Bent it up pretty good. Spent about 3 hours cutting hammering, and welding, and got it pretty straight, and functional. Trap is now baited and set out there.

I had to replace the drive belt on a brand new Craftsman push string trimmer I bought a couple months ago. It beats a hand-held weed eater, and handles heavier stuff.
But the damned drive belt just broke -- I'm figuring it was more cheap Chinese shit that anything else. I thought that would be a fairly easy job. Took me about all damn afternoon. I basically had to nearly take the whole damn thing apart just to get a new belt on it. I had to remove the trimmer head from the frame, and carefully thread the belt on. And there was only one way to do it, an exact sequence to get that belt on.
And then put it back together, and get the idler pulley tensioned. That was a bitch.

I honestly think they had to really think it through to make a belt that hard to replace. Went to special trouble.
And that reminds me, I bought a new riding lawn mower about 3 years or so ago. Damn drive belt broke on it soon as well.
I think it is cheap Chicom belts. The new belt has lasted ever since so far. I hope the new belt for the trimmer will be good too.

I have an idea for a trimmer. Get an old 21" gas rotary mower, cut the front third of the deck off it. Replace the blade with a 17" disc of 3/4" plywood. At intervals (say every 90 degrees), mill a slot in the bottom surface of the plywood disc. Slots to be the width of a scrap timing belt, and deep enough to hold two layers of the belt with the cogs intermeshed. Slots maybe 3" long. Each slot gets one piece of timing belt glued and air-stapled in, with the cogs showing. "Cutters" are short strips of the same belting, engaged with the cogs of the fixed pieces of belting, and held in by sheet metal clamps, retained by carriage bolts with wing nuts on the top side of the disc.

If you look at the picture, you'll see how narrow the housing is around the front. There's not much room for the idler tensioner. So what they did was use a belt about as short as would fit. A longer belt would make it easier to thread on, but that would mean more idler travel, or some double idler arrangement. So that just made that one tight belt.
It was almost short enough to run without a tensioner!

Put the belt above the "deck" of the machine, and put the arbor for the trimmer head on slotted holes in the deck, and you could eliminate the need for an idler, and make belt changes easier.

Will be out of pocket the last half of August - hubby and I are going on a cruise to Scandinavia. We missed out on the river cruise we were supposed to go on with friends, due to my father needing us to take care of him the last few weeks of his life.
It's just going to be the two of us on this trip - one of Paul's cousins is going to watch our youngest while we take a much-needed escape for 19 days away from all the petty problems of the world. Given that in the last 5 years I have lost a daughter, my Mom, my Dad, 2 cats, and 1 dog, I figure I've earned this vacation - I am REALLY looking forward to it!
We will also be celebrating our 42nd anniversary while on our cruise - it's going to be strange having just the 2 of us around; we normally have a nice get bright her with friends and family to join in the fun. I've already told the folks in charge about it, so maybe they'll have a cake or something.
Anyway, I'm almost always here, even if you don't hear from me - I can't quit the Horde!

I never learned Italian. My father is fluent and was born here, his whole family is fluent, none of the kids though. Not me, or my brother, or my cousins. Mom's side was all italian, but none of them were fluent. Didn't really help when we went to italy either, my father had a little trouble with the Rome dialect, but no problem in the naples area. It was pretty funny actually. If he started speaking in italian people were like eh nablidon. If he started in english, which marked him clearly as american, and then switched to italian they were like "very curious, you sound like you're from naples." lol.

The French and Indian war always seemed anti-clamactic to me. Once the English got their act together they'd overcome things. It started when George Washington took a fort, then his troops murdered the captives, and the French came up and captured him. Then a poorly run expedition to modern Pittsburgh was defeated. A pause while the colonists and English got organized, and Pittsburgh and Canada soon fell without too much of a fight. Meanwhile, lots of atrocities on both sides on the frontier.
