GDP Contracts by 0.9%, The Second Quarter in a Row, as America Enters a Funcession
LEFTWING MONOPOLY FACEBOOK BEGINS CENSORING STATEMENTS THAT BIDEN HAS CHANGED THE DEFINITION OF A RECESSION

Oh, and that 0.9%?! Yeah, they fudged that number to be as small a contraction as possible. You can bet large stacks of money that in the coming months, that number will be "UNEXPECTEDLY!" revised to show a larger and larger contraction, probably up the 1.6% that the Atlanta Fed tracker was showing.

Or worse. The economy has been deteriorating still further since that -1.6% reading.

Whoops!

Whoopsie!

CNBC, supposedly a business and economics oriented channel, jettisoned the textbook definition of a recession and adapted itself to the New Soviet Reality imposed on them by Biden and their own hyperpartisan "journalists." They refused to call it a recession, instead adopting Biden's Newspeak.

cnbcrecessionarysignal.jpg

This formulation -- that we're not in a recession, but that we may be in some unknown far-off future -- seems to be the redefinition that Biden sought, which the media has unanimously accepted as the New Reality.

Screenshot (2605).jpg

Brit Hume

@brithume

"...may be approaching a recession." Note the exquisitely careful wording, in keeping with the Biden administration's efforts to abandon the traditional two-down-quarters definition of a recession.

Some, like Politco's Ben White, actually have a prior history of personally defining a recession as two quarters of negative growth, but are now adopting the New Reality without explaining what has prompted this sudden religious conversion. And they're blocking anyone who has the temerity to ask.

Amusingly, the media is having a panic attack about Republicans refusing to give access to leftwing activists posing as reporters -- but note that the leftwing activists posing as reporters themselves refuse to answer perfectly reasonable questions.

We just learned it from you, Dad.

John Solomon points out that this is hardly the first time that Biden and his Praetorian Media has reshaped reality to better serve his political needs. Before redefining "recession," Biden and the Praetorian Media redefined five other key words, including:

Voter suppression

Following the controversy of the 2020 election, Republicans in some states such as Georgia have pushed a series of election reforms with the stated purpose of combating voter fraud and protecting election integrity

These measures include requiring voters to provide identification to receive an absentee ballot and prohibiting ballot harvesting, a tactic, outlawed in most states, in which third-party activists gather and deliver voters' ballots.

Biden has consistently described these efforts as "voter suppression" meant to make it harder for people, especially minorities, to cast their ballots. Biden has even called such efforts "Jim Crow 2.0," a reference to the laws that enforced racial segregation in the South.

...

Illegal alien

Last year, the Biden administration ended use of the phrase "illegal alien" to describe migrants who entered the country illegally, although "alien" has long been common in U.S. law. The administration ordered immigration enforcement authorities to use the term "non-citizen" instead.

In addition to "recession," which Biden is in an all-out Orewellian blitz to redefine now, he's also redefined "domestic terrorism," "insurrection," and "disinformation," of course. Hit the link for that.

Christina Pushaw adds a few more:

Christina Pushaw

@ChristinaPushaw

Just a few words that liberals have redefined:
"recession"
"woman"
"vaccine"
"democracy"
"healthcare"
"racist"
"mostly peaceful"

Comfortably Smug
@ComfortablySmug

We're really going to let the people who can't define a woman define a recession?

Even some lefties are taking notice of the pungent smell of Orwell in the air all around them:

Conan O'Brien

@ConanOBrien

The White House now says it's only a recession if you see a salamander wearing a top hat.

Solid prediction:

Jack Posobiec

@JackPosobiec

They will ban people for saying we are in a recession

You all know it's coming

I wrote most of this post at 10 am; I didn't expect the censorship to come so quickly.

But it's here now.

Biden must have prepped them for this and told them to get their censors ready:

theorwelliancensorshipbegins.jpg

They've started the "fact" checking, which is the ideological pretext for beginning the algorithmic suppression and then the bannings.

In fact: They're straight-up warning people they intend to do that.

COMPLY WITH NEWSPEAK'S NEW (YET UNCHANGING) DEFINITIONS OR ELSE.

A whole new area of "disinformation" to censor -- dangerous, morale-sapping "economic disinformation." Most likely insinuated into the American communication channels by, you guessed it, Russia.

Phil Magness -- an economic historian -- points out that Joe Biden repeatedly claimed, without evidence, that the economy was in a recession under Trump, and FaceBook, of course, attached no "fact" check to his claim.

Omri Ceren

@omriceren

Looking forward to a lot of "Biden claims, without evidence, that the US is not in a recession, contradicting experts" headlines and chyrons throughout the day.

On account of how journalists don't choose a side.

Comfortably Smug

@ComfortablySmug

Biden:
"Surprised" by "Unexpected" Taliban
"Surprised" by "Unexpected" Inflation
"Surprised" by "Unexpected" Gas Prices
"Surprised" by "Unexpected" Formula Shortages
"Surprised" by "Unexpected" Russian Invasion
"Surprised" by "Unexpected" Recession
... seems like a trend?

In fairness, the smartest man he knows is crackhead.

The New York Times is doing the latter to make the number appear smaller, even though the annualized figure is the usual one used.

87 From what I put on the MR based on a really cursory read:

Personal consumption expenditure is up 1.0%, but goods (physical stuff) are down 4.4% and private investment is down a staggering 13.5%. The only increases were in services spending (read: things like medical and child care, education, etc.) and intellectual property investment (probably mostly in big tech). Exports were up slightly. Gross all-in private investment is down by 2.73% and the inventory draw-down after the gigantic build-up in Q4 of last year (that pushed the entire GDP print positive due to its scale) continues, with inventories posting -2.01%. Investment in non-residential structures (stores, factories, office buildings, etc.) fell by 11.7% and residential structures (houses, apartment buildings, etc.) fell by 14%.

Declining real spending in the physical economy, declining investment, declining inventories and reduced construction and fixed asset investment while inflation continues and the average joe's credit cards are nearly maxed out isn't exactly a rosy "things are better than the top-line GDP print indicates" story.

98 It only gets worse from here. While the job market is still ok, unemployment is now up to pre COVID levels. Deeper down in the jobs report, you can see a lot oof people are taking 2 jobs to survive and older retirees are back in the market because they can't afford to live on a fixed retirement income. Consumer spending and confidence has also started to take a hit. Equity markets are pretty much flat since Lettuce Brain took over, and people's 401k are disappearing.

These are not good lies. They're not plausible. They are sloppy, knee-jerk panic lies.

166 This controversy is a prime example of why the United States and the West in general are falling behind our Asian competitors. In China's Sino-capitalist system, the strong state involvement allows the government to set aggressive growth targets and intervene in real-time through engagement in the markets directly via their state-owned enterprises (SOEs). The SOEs can direct investment and employment if needed to achieve the growth targets set by the central government, so long as those growth targets are reasonable.

The Sino-capitalist model is based on private market activity to achieve growth with high efficiency of capital allocation through the markets, but still allows the state various tools to interact with the private market to direct top-level objectives and provide capital management. This hybrid is a strong system that has achieved consistent growth and rapid development of the business environment.

Our laissez-faire approach of unmanaged capital investment exposes us to significant volatility and backsliding that the Chinese in particular do not experience. The xenophoba and market ideology of our system prevents us from enjoying that stability

Posted by: illiniwek
-----------------------
Googul loses money on YT services themselves due to the horrendous hardware costs of providing realtime streaming to billions but makes money from selling some more data points about individuals' preferences to companies. That is why Rumble is not really a competitor as Googul uses its consumer services as loss leaders in order to hose up their 'customers' data to sell to advertisers. AdSense (or whatever they are calling it now) is the heart of Googul and where the profits are made.

For Rumble to compete effectively in video space, it would effectively have to be able to sell its data to advertisers and that means competing with the big dog Googul. Rumble is better positioned to be an alternative paid subscription source with freebie teaser vids and that makes more sense as a corporation.

I think they did fake them but no amount of fakery could get to 0% or higher. The real number is between 1.5-2% negative. Plus, I think this is a setup to fake-brag about "improving" numbers in the run-up to November. They probably realize -- and rightfully so -- that few people are really paying attention to any of this in the dog days of summer. So take a hit now when it's not really important and setup a fake "improvement" leading up to November.

234 Much more important is the cost of capital. The previous recent recessions occurred during a 40-year downward cycle in interest rates. This one is at the start of a cycle of rising interest rates.

In other words, all of those expensive "policy tools" the government has (spending orgies) are much, much more expensive and difficult and a lot of them are gone completely.

Absent taxation(and possibly what amounts to theft from depositers/taxpayers, this is mostly a personal theory based on depositers and taxpayers being the real lender and not receiving corresponding returns), equity and debt financing are transparent.

E.g. Peter Jennings - it's a special way to sound like an arrogant twat, and he excelled.

It is bursting as we speak. The mortgage payment revolt by pre-completion purchasers, the revocation of credit from suppliers and contractors, the large number of failures of small firms supporting real estate, the continued zero-COVID policy - the air is flying out of China's real estate bubble and it's going to take a lot of the Chinese economy with it, especially once you factor in that a lot of localities are financed directly through real estate and suddenly they're all going to need money from other sources and the only source available is their residents.

276 >>>203 Reminder: as mini-Build Back Better gets ready to get passed next week via reconciliation, it would not have been possible to do without Mitch McConnell okaying GOP Senators to vote for the bullshit "infrastructure" bill.

This technically not true. Dems always had the votes for reconciliation, it was just a question of whether they could get to a package Manchin would agree to. Infrastructure bill was not formally tied to this, and whatever linkage that existed was just Pelosi/Squad thinking they could roll Manchin by tying the Green New Deal (reconciliation) to the normal process infrastructure bill that he was in favor of (that didn't work and wouldn't have).

If anything the GOPe did mattered here, it was the recent passing of the CHIPs (semiconductor plant subsidies) that helped clear the Senate agenda for this reconciliation stuff. GOPe could have held CHIPs up and made Schumer/Manchin/Senate work on that ... and maybe (MAYBE) run out the clock on the reconciliation stuff.

Recessions come about due to misallocation of capital, usually overallocation to a particular sector. Today we can see that in tech, and more dubiously housing(unclear whether there is really an overallocation). The people who make up the economy will get things sorted on their own, it doesn't require a special act by the government, though the Biden administration is doing what it can to get in the way.

Q1 2023 vs Q4 2022 is not a terribly different estimate, and Obama growth we seemed agreed on.

Remember, with a Democrat in the White House, the initial numbers are always "better" than what the final numbers will be.

Now if a GOP President was in office the GDP initial quarterly numbers usually go like this, initial -0.4%, 1st revision 0.0%, final revision +0.3%, but you can damn sure bet that the media won't talk about the revisions.

305 Just noticed that the regime authorized yet another 20 million barrels of oil to be sold from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve two days ago. That is in addition to the 125 million already released. so no it is more than 20% tapped out. I really think this is helping to temporarily lower the prices slightly but the idiots have no credible plan to meet our energy needs expect to keep tapping into it. (And starving us to death.)

Is there a drawdown limit? The regime will take it to zero if necessary.

327 The "Sino-capitalist model" is based on a massive real estate bubble that looks like it's about to burst. Chinese citizens have stopped paying their mortgages on their crap properties, and banks aren't allowing depositors to withdraw funds.

Posted by: junior
--------------------
Yes it is. An absurd percentage of the Chinese GDP goes to investments in housing--much of which will either never be completed or are of such poor quality that no one lives there. The Zero Covid model is killing production of real goods and local governments that depend on selling leases on property are about to go broke. Xi either has to start shoveling cash out the door or risk a massive lengthy depression. Either way, you end up at the same place either with a short sharp shock of a couple of years or agonizing economic pain for a long period of time. The agonizing pain route though reprograms citizens by changing their expectations and that hinders growth going forward.

343 I think they did fake them but no amount of fakery could get to 0% or higher. The real number is between 1.5-2% negative. Plus, I think this is a setup to fake-brag about "improving" numbers in the run-up to November. They probably realize -- and rightfully so -- that few people are really paying attention to any of this in the dog days of summer. So take a hit now when it's not really important and setup a fake "improvement" leading up to November.

that's the plan anyway

Well here's a take you might find interesting. Y'know how the Varangian Guard was composed of foreigners to insure loyalty? Jews (and Chinese, Armenians in other countries) functioned as a sort of outsider civil servant. Main other competitors would be clergy and nobles. There's a lot of factional self-interest in getting rid of the Jewish councilors, while monarchs tended to employ them both for their literacy and not being the catspaw of a noble household or the church.

The upshot to that is increased mobility and reduced overhangs of shit you have to deal with. You always pay for all that anyway, but it's abstracted away and shows up as simply "rent" and is thus easier to move away from when needed, as well as making things easier to manage because you just call the landlord.

The downsides are in stability and accountability. It is unpredictable in terms of costs and if the landlord sucks, then things don't get done. For young people trying to figure out where to live, what to do for work, how to maximize potential, etc., that "rent and I can leave anytime" attitude makes some sense. For people with families, the stability is a great thing because your fixed housing costs are going to be lower than your rent would have been, all things being equal, 2-5 years down the road.

497 Recessions come about due to misallocation of capital, usually overallocation to a particular sector. Today we can see that in tech, and more dubiously housing(unclear whether there is really an overallocation). The people who make up the economy will get things sorted on their own, it doesn't require a special act by the government, though the Biden administration is doing what it can to get in the way.
[ . . . ]
Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at July 28, 2022 12:49 PM (b2nrj)

IIRC, recessions are caused by government printing (or setting interest rates below the cost of money) screwing up the balance between borrowing for long term projects versus short term borrowing and savings attracted by higher interest rates on savings.

That the economy has gone sour under near zero interest rates, and went sour before the rates went up yesterday, means there are serious structural problems in the economy that will have to be liquidated out.

Since Biden's Junta are all behind Krugman's fear of liquidity traps they will do everything to keep their allies and relations afloat, and this will wind up putting us firmly into a depression.

Posted by: Kindltot at July 28, 2022 01:26 PM (xhaym)

498 Posted by: Skeptical Schnauzer at July 28, 2022 01:19 PM (h+7ej)

It's worth keeping in mind that in early 2020 the "experts" in government and research hospitals were going around telling everyone that 5% of the population was going to die outright and the rest would be permanently scarred to the point where they wouldn't even be qualified to serve in the military.

It wasn't just certain people, every agency in the government was telling the President that this was a near doomsday scenario that required drastic action.

501 Declining real spending in the physical economy, declining investment, declining inventories and reduced construction and fixed asset investment while inflation continues and the average joe's credit cards are nearly maxed out isn't exactly a rosy "things are better than the top-line GDP print indicates" story.

Posted by: WEF Elites at July 28, 2022 01:44 PM (Do5/p)

502 "Two quarters of negative growth" is a generally accepted rule of thumb for the start of a recession, and has been so for many years, but a rule of thumb isn't a definition.

Biden, his team, Facebook and the sympathetic press are falling back on "legalese" to censor folks who are referring to a rule of thumb as a definition.

We just need to make sure that when we post about the Bided administration using this definition, that we're saying that they're now trying to sidestep or memory-hole the long-accepted "two quarters of negative growth" rule of thumb.

The community based reality, culture, is essentially diabolical. Everyone is forced to live the lie. No one can be allowed to escape.

That is the culture in power now. At least controlling our institutions. You will be made to sing the song the way it is written. Because your lack of belief is ultimately the PROBLEM not our incomptence. See Jimmy Carter A crisis of Confidence Speech. It's fundamentally an inversion of Christian faith - same as communism - you must believe in the Government. Your doubts are holding us back.
