The Morning Report — 7/28/22

flipbyrd.jpg

Good morning, kids. Thursday and is anybody really surprised that Joe Manchin caved and signed on to the watered down version of the Build Bolshevism Bigger bill? Many of us, and I'm ashamed to say myself included, believed that his torpedoing of the original multi-trillion dollar insanity was because he too saw it as insane, despite being pimped by everyone in his party. It was also supposed to be the crowning jewel of this illegitimate junta that would see it go from victory to victory in the ensuing years. Manchin effectively blocking it derailed their domestic agenda, or theoretically anyway. Now, supposedly, he's revived it.

In recent weeks, Manchin shot down Democrat attempts at pushing through Biden’s agenda, and reportedly told Democratic leaders he would “unequivocally” refuse to support legislation related to climate change and tax increases.

Now, the West Virginia senator claims reconciling with Democrats on this package will help the country fight inflation.

“We must be honest about the economic reality America now faces if we want to avoid fanning the flames of inflation,” Manchin said in a statement Wednesday. “At its core, the purpose of reconciliation is to get our economic and financial house in order. Contrary to foolish talk otherwise, America cannot spend its way out of debt or out of inflation.”The revival of Biden’s agenda comes as the president has faced mounting criticism from his own party for failing to implement significant policy over his first year and a half in office. Democrats will use the budget reconciliation process to bypass the Senate filibuster and advance the bill along party lines, potentially giving the party a much-needed legislative victory before a midterm election where Democrats are expected to face a “red wave.”

To pass the package, Democrats still might need to convince Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), who has voiced opposition to elements of Biden’s spending agenda. Axios reported that hours after Manchin’s surprise reversal, a spokesperson for Sinema said the Arizona senator did not have a comment on the bill because “she will need to review the text.”

Yeah, this bill will reduce inflation the same as pouring a supertanker-sized lard-glucose cocktail down Jerry Nadler's maw will slim him down so much that Tank Abrams will lose the weight. Complete farce. At the beginning of this Kalorama Komintern Klown show, the original BBB bill was rightly feared as a national kill shot (the stolen election I guess merely put us in a coma).

Yet all the disasters since then makes this a moot point, at least from a political perspective. The only thing it will do is enrage an already terrified and enraged citizenry. As for Joe Manchin, he's a whore. Probably the highest paid whore in history to date but a whore nonetheless.

Among the many pearls of wisdom of the great Milton Friedman is this gem:

“I do not believe that the solution to our problem is simply to elect the right people. The important thing is to establish a political climate of opinion which will make it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing. Unless it is politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing, the right people will not do the right thing either, or if they try, they will shortly be out of office.”

With that in mind, I cannot understand how West Virginians keep sending this asshole to Congress. Considering his party's open vow to destroy oil, gas and coal, it's even more of a puzzler. And let's not hold our breath over Senator Kinky Boots either. But why should I direct my ire at them when we have our wonderful GOP as a bulwark — pun definitely intended — to protect us?

Let’s climb on board the “wayback machine” and take a journey to the distant time of summer, 2021. To fulfill his “return to normalcy” pledge, Joe Biden was demanding a budget-busting (and inflation-triggering) $1.2T for infrastructure, and another $5T for Build Back Better (to apparently build it back better after he gets done breaking it). Republicans (of the Vichy RINO variety) feverishly negotiated with the Dems to avoid fiscal Armageddon. They successfully negotiated Armageddon down to a mere total disaster -- agreeing to give the Dems a paltry $1.2T to distribute to their leftist pals.

President Asterisk held a rose garden announcement for the big reveal -- showing the world the sting they had just pulled off. He announced on national television that he and the congressional Democrats had dupped the Republicans. He was taking the infrastructure bill to the bank, and the Democrats would be pursuing the Build Back Better bill through reconciliation. The Republicans hadn’t negotiated the Democrats down from anything. Playing the part of Charlie Brown, the Republicans had taken one more shot at the football.

And there they were, the Vichy RINOs -- standing right next to Biden -- grinning like the village idiots he had made them. It was a learning opportunity -- if the RINOs had any capacity to learn. The whole episode once again proved the adage that there’s a sucker born every minute.

Well, a few minutes have passed since then and the Republicans are lining up to prove that the adage is still alive and well in Washington, D.C. After the Uvalde school shooting, the calls for sensible gun control -- from people who want total gun confiscation -- became a cacophony. But knowing that they’d probably control Congress next year, and could do anything they wished to address the problem, wasn’t enough for the RINOs. They decided to throw the Dems a lifeline now. They jumped right on the “let’s make fools of the Republicans again” bandwagon.

They negotiated a gun-safety bill with the Democrats, that was short on “negotiation” and missed the “safety” point entirely. You see, when the RINOs are involved, negotiating means deciding how much of the Democrats wish list they’ll surrender on. Somehow “compromise” never means getting something in return. . .

. . . Now the House Judiciary Committee is discussing an assault weapons ban -- which if passed will also be a mere temporary stop on the road total gun confiscation. When accused of trying to ban guns in common use, Chairman “I didn’t soil myself” Nadler responded, “That’s the point.” He should have added, “Haven’t you been paying attention?” Which of course, they haven’t been.

I have a couple of questions for the Republicans. Do you feel stupid yet? Or are you too dumb to realize you’ve been played -- again?

The Dems won’t enforce our current gun laws -- which criminals won’t follow anyway. The only people who will comply with more restrictions are law-abiding citizens. They don’t tend to go around shooting each other, because it’s already against the law -- which the law-abiding follow. So, the Republicans have “negotiated” increased restrictions on the law-abiding and the creation of a bunch of tools for leftists to use while harassing gun owners -- and gotten nothing in return. They rationalized it as “common sense” gun laws -- because they didn’t have the common sense to see what this was really all about. Do you get why we call the Democrats the evil party and the Republicans the stupid party? Both titles are well earned.

Thanks to author John Green for providing a nice segue from BBB to gun confiscation, as well as what he terms GOP "stupidity." For the umpteenth time, the GOP is not stupid. They're in league with the Democrats. Hence the term, uni-party. Psaki-Psircling back to the political angle, the real stupidity is Manchin's timing. Oh so brave to fight against $5 trillion in waste and freedom-destroying insanity but $1.5 trillion is doing the right thing for the people! And for the people means his off-shore bank account.

Rush Limbaugh of blessed memory used to say that discussing things like budgets and deficits just made people's eyes and ears glaze over. But thanks to President Sponge-Brain Shits-Pants and his handlers having intentionally taken a wrecking ball to our economy and savings, that which was once arcane is now top of mind with even the lowest of low information voters. Even if somehow this bill falters, either because of Sinema or the fact that several Senators are out of action because of the General Tso's Sickness (there is no absentee voting in the Senate [not that rules matter there, either]), the junta will just deem it passed by declaring a "national emergency."

We are so friggin' unmoored from any sense of normalcy, propriety and the barest minimum of ethics that anything is possible. For sure from their side of the line. I'm hoping and praying from ours as well. And that does not include the GOP just to be clear.

NOTE: The opinions expressed in the links may or may not reflect my own. I include them because of their relevance to the discussion of a particular issue.

7 Definition of a recession, 2 consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth if there is a Republican president. If this happens under a democrat president it is called a reset.

15 Good morning dear morons and happy birthday JJ

The minimum wage here currently $16.99 is linked to the inflation rate. So now these geniuses get to experience what is called a wage-price spiral.

16 It's pretty neat to consider that Trump managed to create conditions for households to increase income by around $4500. First time in 40 years or so that type of growth happened IIRC. And he did it almost entirely on his own.

And then the (R) politicians needed to get re-elected so they passed tax cuts that will expire.

And now look around. Inflation has magically eaten away around $4500 per household (what a coincidence), and we're about to get tax increases.

Neat, huh?

The Republican Senators didn't believe that they weren't screwing the country when they allowed the Democrats to keep reconciliation in the bank. It's just another in the long line of lies they've told us through the years.

So the man who says - correctly - that "America cannot spend its way out of debt or out of inflation" is signing on to spend more than a trillion dollars that we don't have, contributing the debt and driving more inflation - as well as causing even greater pressure on the federal budget (which is already in critical condition) in a rising interest rate environment and then compounding that pressure by raising taxes at the same time, which will reduce the economic activity required to make the tax increase result in meaningful additional revenues, all while doing nothing about other spending?

They asked subway riders if they would divulge their passwords in exchange for $20 in cash. They had a lot of takers. In the next round, they asked riders if they would divulge their passwords in exchange for a candy bar. They still had a lot of takers. The short-term profit - even if extremely modest - enticed people to engage in extremely dangerous behavior due to a combination of short-sighted greed and ignorance as to consequences.

That's your answer, JJ. The pork-barrel spending (the modest short-term profit) is enticing enough and the risks - destruction of industry in the state, declining wealth, etc. - are both abstract and complex as well as in the future. The pork will win every time because the marketing is easy. "Win today, and trust me tomorrow, don't listen to naysayers because they have never been right and we're all still just fine."

And they don't have a strong majority, and the midterms look bad for them. And this bill isn't everything they wanted.

But it's a lot. The difference between D and R is that they actually mean what they say, and they go after it. Not that what they say is ever any good, but people who vote for them get what vote for. Rs would never, ever pursue an agenda item like this. Or at all. Or even pretend to.

I've never been happy with the BBT. "Science" rejects the idea of a steady-state universe because it would require matter to be constantly created which is believed to be impossible. But if all that impossibility were to occur all at once, we can just ignore that contradiction.

Wherever I see anything from astronomers or cosmologist since Sagan, they all talk about what they "know". Makes me crazy. You don't know shit. You think something. You have theories about things. As Jefferson said, "Give a man a fish, you feed him for a day. Teach a man to bullshit about things and he'll get never ending government funding."

Which brings me to something I have said many, many times since the 2020 "election". The offices of Governor and US Senate and Presidential elections should be decided by an Electoral College system. Being that President Trump won almost 75% of the counties in NYS it might make the election of these offices more in line of what the citizens of these States want.

Based on the way things are going, I have an increasing degree of confidence in the conspiracy theory that the Large Hadron Collider accident in 2008 ripped a hole in spacetime and thrust us into a parallel dimension where everything is out of kilter with expectations - that we entered some sort of bizarro universe. If this is the case, physics has a lot of catching up to do in terms of understanding the fundamental rules of nature ...

When I first learnt about deterministic laws of physics as a kid, I tried to "fool" nature by doing something unexpected. Like put my foot down in a slightly different place than originally intended as I was walking. Since I would be breaking the laws of physics, I hoped it would get me into a parallel universe. Never seemed to work.

So one theory - if you look at the polling Manchin was WAY ahead early on, and as time went on his opponent got close but never quite went ahead. I'm still scratching my head over that. Cynically, I thought it was that he was told knew the CHIPS act would not pass and figured he would get out while the passing of the act is built into the price. But....

He didn't buy stocks, he bought options, and while he, he may have had stocks, the reporting is so poor that I'm reading "up to five million dollars" in stocks and claims that he sold on the 17th of July (today is the 28th, not "yesterday").

For all we know, this would be the least performing trade and he needed to free up capital for a much better opportunity. Lose a little to score a lot.

221 The GDP print of -0.9 is less good than it looks at the top line and is definitely recessionary regardless of the spin. Really cursory read:

Personal consumption expenditure is up 1.0%, but goods (physical stuff) are down 4.4% and private investment is down a staggering 13.5%. The only increases were in services spending (read: things like medical and child care, education, etc.) and intellectual property investment (probably mostly in big tech). Exports were up slightly. Gross all-in private investment is down by 2.73% and the inventory draw-down after the gigantic build-up in Q4 of last year (that pushed the entire GDP print positive due to its scale) continues, with inventories posting -2.01%. Investment in non-residential structures (stores, factories, office buildings, etc.) fell by 11.7% and residential structures (houses, apartment buildings, etc.) fell by 14%.

Declining real spending in the physical economy, declining investment, declining inventories and reduced construction and fixed asset investment while inflation continues and the average joe's credit cards are nearly maxed out isn't exactly a rosy "things are better than the top-line GDP print indicates" story.

227 Again, I'll point out intentionally causing inflation, and that's what Democrats are doing, is a really bad idea.

LIVs don't pay attention to the Dems looting the treasury. They don't want to know this stuff in fact. But they can't help but see the inflation.

The only answers to this then are

1) The Democrats know their goose is cooked and they are looting as much as they can in a last orgy

2) The Democrats are stupid and don't get that LIVs *will* see inflation and *will* vote against them

3) The Democrats aren't worried about how actual citizens vote

The first question to answer this quandary - is quantum mechanics just a useful math trick or does it describe reality?

The second question is, what is consciousness? If it is a trick, and we really are just controlled by our physical makeup, which is deterministic, then yes. You could map out everyone's life if you could analyze all the data about the world.

I don't know about #1, but I do NOT believe in the materialistic take on #2. We are more then just flesh and bone, and that thing, that soul, allows us free will. And no one can map out what 8 billion souls may do.

Long overdue. "Carried Interest" has always been total BS. No-one else gets that deal. The rest of us pay ordinary income tax rates.

370 What I find fascinating is how much of the material world we still have zero comprehension about.

This is what I call Social Babelization - when a system is so complex that it is beyond understanding.

In the historical narrative concerning the city of Babel, the people, under the ruler Nimrod, where to undergo a bold activity, some might suggest was an afront to God's exclusive domain.

To frustrate those plans, he divided them up. Two take-aways: (1) It takes an enormous coordinated effort to undergo something highly complex. (2) That effort, given how warlords and dictators flourish, is guaranteed to be evil and worthy of divine judgement and destruction.

Sometimes it is best to stay in our own lane and quit trying to compete against God.

It has a fair amount of bearing on ethical and legal theories. You should be able to think of instances where leftwing academics deny any culpability of an individual and place it all on their environment? If determinism is true, this is correct. Humans wouldn't be moral agents(which is actually the intended theological point of some denominations). It's unjust to hold someone responsible for something over which they have no control. 386 Naomi Wolf got it right. This isn't merely a war against economic prosperity and the presumptions of our Constitution, it's war on the human spirit.

There's not a politician alive who understands this. Reagan had a certain feel for this base element in Leftist ideology and intent (called "liberal" in his time). Trump is not going to become a political metaphysician. But in fact that's what we need. This war will be won or lost in the marriage of the word and the spirit, logos, a linguistic crusade.

Nobody does. Math has known paradoxes. Maybe one day we will get an insight into some of them, or specifically why they seem to us like paradoxes when in reality they are not.

But trying to put it all in terms that make a great deal of satisfying sense is fun but fruitless, other than as a path to understanding God a little bit better. I walk by faith not by sight.

The alternative is not Pelagianism, which Augustine was arguing against.

The Catholic Church teaches a sort of impaired free will. It is by the grace of God we can make good choices(which is abundantly rather than selectively provided as a form of arbitrary favoritism). God does not force us to make good or evil choices. Humans are still moral agents.

An elaborate illusion to cover up a puppet show would seem to make less sense.

Which is the underlying premise of "free will". The concept of the Doctrines of Grace are predictably hostile to a world that believes it has no impediments except itself.

The idea of free will, in of itself is contradictory since it assumes that the Will has no particular bent or direction, that it can choose to sin, or not to sin. Scriptures and all of human existence proves that to not be true.

Free Will also is a rebuke against repentance and sanctification.

450 The AK-15 is a new Russian assault rifle. It was developed under the Ratnik future infantrymen programme. This weapon was first publicly revealed in 2016. The AK-15 is mainly aimed at elite units of the Russian military and law enforcement forces, as well as possible export customers. It is planned that the AK-15 will replace in production an AK-103 assault rifle.

The AK-15 is essentially a version of the AK-12, chambered for a 7.62x39 mm ammunition. This ammunition has superior penetration and stopping power comparing with the Soviet 5.45x39 mm ammunition, or standard NATO 5.56x45 mm ammunition. The 7.62x39 mm ammunition is still used by the Russian military and law enforcement forces and is widely used around the world. Some operators prefer this caliber. There were also plans to chamber the AK-15 for a standard NATO 7.62x51 mm ammunition. Also the new weapon is better balanced and has improved ergonomics.

455 Free Will also is a rebuke against repentance and sanctification.

-------------------

I don't understand this at all. You cannot have repentance without Free Will. If I cannot choose, then I cannot repent, because whoever is truly calling the shots for my behaviors automatically assumes responsibility for them. I'm an automaton, which makes repentance a moot point.

456 "So you disagree with St Augustine? That while he conjectured that Adam had the ability not to sin, but post Fall man has lost his natural ability to not sin?
John 8:34 we read that Jesus said that anyone who sins is a slave of sin. Could you harmonize slavery with freedom?"

imo we have free will, despite "sin nature". Being imperfect does not mean we are incapable of making right choices.

Also, the Christian concept is we are redeemed from the price of sin (wages of of sin is death), because we are redeemed from Adam's sin. It is our free will that allows us to make better choices, while still tied to this "body of death".

We live in "man's day", where we "choose you this day whom you will serve". (even OT keeps telling people to choose, because man has free will). The Lord's day is judgment of those choices.

457 I'm really looking forward to the 5-6 seat GOP gain in the Senate so we can get a new cast of characters who are always on the fence. I'm sick of both Sinema and Manchin.

Mitch does NOT ,under any circumstances ,want a 10 seat Senate GOP majority.
The grift is best when you have the majority but not quite enough of a majority.

458 To give up free will is possession. Christians do not give up free will, they do not let the holy spirit take over as the demons do. "Be transformed by the renewing of your mind" is an active, ongoing process. Discipline, more than "surrender".

Posted by: illiniwek at July 28, 2022 09:55 AM (Cus5s)

459 333 That is a matter of using a particular understanding of free will, which is not the understanding of classical, but of modern philosophers. The key is how you understand choice. The moderns ultimately run to Sartre's extreme, that if there is a basis for the choice, that limits your freedom. Which is absurd.
Posted by: Eeyore at July 28, 2022 09:04 AM (TgBWG)

If your choice is inevitably caused by a likewise inevitable cause, things are deterministic. If your will chooses such that after weighing things it can choose the option was has less causal strength behind it, then it is the will making the choice.

Nooded, so sorry. But your view is a paradigmatic example of the modern view. It is rejected by most pre-moderns. The question turns on what you mean by a cause of a choice, and whether a physical cause excludes a rational cause.

460 Free will ... looking at (real) science, from the (classically?) trained mind, and deciding Al Gore's Sciencism is a Big Lie. And that the Plandemic Response was not science, it was a planned attack on our sovereignty.

But the Preachers of "get the vax, wear the mask" and the "Climate End is Near" alarmists are demanding submission, not thinking. (the denounce thinking, demand 2+2=5) But the use force of BigGov to get doctors to refuse early treatment of Covid (denying their original oath).

and this is my problem with institutional Christianity that demands people not think and study, but accept the dictate of the denomination (and weekly recite that darned Nicene Creed, where critics were exiled ... early cancel culture)

461 JJ, please don't go along with Leftist propaganda. They love to say they are "democratic" when they aren't. They steal elections. They are Democrats, not Democratics. Under "First Amendment" concerns, you summarized one article this way:

Hulu Denied Democratic Political Ads From Airing. Two Days Later, It Changed Its Mind.

Let me fix that:

Hulu Denied Democrat Political Ads From Airing. Two Days Later, It Changed Its Mind.

It's a small edit, but important.

462 J.J.

Love you from the old days at hot air, but there have been a lot of "kill shots", so why do you guys keep doing this? You say this will be the end and then it happens and then you move on to calling something else the end. The truth is the country was shot in the head 2008 and it's just taken it this long to fall down.

Pro tip: I hear goats are a great resource for preppers.

"I have a couple of questions for the Republicansconservative pundits. Do you feel stupid yet? Or are you too dumb to realize you’ve been played -- again."

There is a reason why this keeps happening and it has NOTHING to do with Republicans being the Stupid Party. Unfortunately, the real answer is one that you have to figure out by yourself. Maybe a few more decades of betrayal will do the trick?

you know they're on the same side? right? there is no opposition. the only ones who're stupid are the people who think; after everything we've seen for the last few decades (and certainly since trump got elected); are people who think there are 2 parties
