The Morning Rant: 96% of NOAA Temperature Stations Are Corrupted per Heartland Institute Study

A couple of weeks ago I put up a post about the current heat wave hysteria, explaining how with tens of thousands of weather stations across the US and Europe, and only about 120 years of data, it is a statistical imperative that there will be thousands of “record daily high temperatures” recorded every year, including plenty of all “all time records.” In that same piece I referenced how climatistas have no problem using data from obviously corrupted weather stations. I referenced one in Portugal that just recorded a record high temperature for that city. Coincidentally, it sits atop a rock wall and adjacent to a brick wall, both of which retain heat.

Shortly after the post was published, I heard from the folks over at The Heartland Institute who informed me that they were about to release a major research report showing just how badly corrupted NOAA’s weather stations are. That report was published two days ago. Here is a link to the story at their website.

This is a link to the actual report: “Corrupted Climate Stations: The Official U.S. Temperature Record Remains Fatally Flawed

In Heartland’s own words, “Official NOAA temperature stations produce corrupted data due to purposeful placement in man-made hot spots.”

Just how flawed are NOAA’s weather stations?

This report finds approximately 96 percent of U.S. temperature stations fail to meet what the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) considers to be “acceptable,” uncorrupted placement. These findings strongly undermine the legitimacy and the magnitude of the official consensus on long-term climate warming trends.

So just what measurements is Heartland using to discern that the stations don’t meet NOAA’s guidelines? They used NOAA’s own Site Information Handbook.

More from Heartland’s report:

The report was compiled via satellite and in-person survey visits to NOAA weather stations that contribute to the “official” land temperature data in the United States. The research shows that 96% of these stations are corrupted by localized effects of urbanization – producing heat-bias because of their close proximity to asphalt, machinery, and other heat-producing, heat-trapping, or heat-accentuating objects. Placing temperature stations in such locations violates NOAA’s own published standards and strongly undermines the legitimacy and the magnitude of the official consensus on long-term climate warming trends in the United States.

Yeah, it’s hard to put much faith in “climate science” when government-funded climate scientists willingly use corrupted data to produce the result they want. (Or to be more specific, to produce the result they are being paid to produce.)

“With a 96 percent warm-bias in U.S. temperature measurements, it is impossible to use any statistical methods to derive an accurate climate trend for the U.S.” said Heartland Institute Senior Fellow Anthony Watts, the director of the study.

The report is actually a follow-up to a report done in 2009, which proved quite embarrassing to the climate community. As documented in this new report, some of the most egregious stations they reported on in 2009 were subsequently closed or moved by NOAA. But as shown in this picture from Cody, Wyoming, NOAA didn’t put much effort into improving the quality of the sites. This one was moved from atop a concrete dam to an asphalt parking lot.

Heartland - 1.JPG

Despite a few changes in locations, NOAA’s overall station placements have gotten much worse.

There are an abundance of photos showing weather stations that are obviously not reliable due to how they are situated, but the report also does the scientific work that NOAA apparently won’t do, grading these flawed stations using NOAA’s own guidelines. They fail consistently.

Here is just one example from Arco, Idaho. The temperature station is on a tiny strip of weeds between a parking lot and a sunlit wall. Below this photo is an infrared photo showing the captured heat of the building. Don’t forget that retained heat in the building doesn’t just affect high temps, it also inflates daily lows as the building releases its warmth overnight.

Heartland - 2.JPG

Take a look at this weather station, which sits at the top of a sunlit rock wall in Colfax, CA. Those rocks are holding a lot of heat. And get this, this weather station formerly sat in a grass field at this firehouse, but during a building renovation the weather station was moved to this corrupted site.

Heartland - 3.JPG

There are dozens more photos like this.

Corrupt data is being used by corrupt scientists to promote a corrupt eco-hysteria. When only 4% of NOAA’s weather stations can accurately produce weather readings that comport with scientific standards set by NOAA itself before it became hopelessly politicized, I will limit myself to believing only 4% of anything climate scientists tell me.

36 The low water levels at western reservoirs is also used to gin up eco-hysteria: "It's the worst drought ever! OMG! WE MUST DO SOMETHING!"

The reality is that the aggregate rainfall has increased in the last fifty years on average -- while there have been dought periods interspersed between rainier periods, the general trend has been increasing. And aggregate water use is back down to what it was in the 1960s.*

The problem with Lake Mead, Lake Powell, et al., is that they release water ALL THE TIME, instead of trying "reserve" it for the dryer periods. Google "It's Hard to Fill a Bathtub When the Drain is Wide Open: The Case of Lake Powell." What is in that report is also true of MANY other western reservoirs.

* Aggregate water consumption levels have gone done because of several reasons, even though the population is dramatically larger than it was. It is less because mining, industry, and agriculture have either changed to use less water or been killed off by the Gang Green or Chamber of Commerce Greedy Bas****s. Plus households have moved more towards xeriscape yards.

The thing with Lake Powell is that it is the first major dam across the Colorado which, up to that point, is laden with sediment. If it were not constantly flushed the sediment would fill up behind the dam and eventually turn it into a waterfall.

107 I've got no problem with weather stations in urban areas per se. If you want accurate temperature calculations, you have to measure temps at various locations reflecting the geography. Large urban areas will generate more heat, but that's the nature of the beast and that increased heat should be reflected in the temp readings. But what NOAA is doing is deliberately over-sampling these urban areas -- and intentionally placing sensors in the hottest places in these urban areas -- to get the "it's getting hotter!" results that they want.

131 One of the fear mongering narratives is that the Colorado river has less water today than in 1930 (don’t remember the exact year but somewhere around there) when the water was allocated between states. Slight problem though. Scientists at the time took the average water level of the river for the previous 20 years and used that as their baseline. However, it turned out the previous 20 years had seen above average snowfall in the mountains that provide water to the river. Quite a lot above average. So their baseline number was higher than it should have been.

So yes there is less water today but it has nothing to do with gloBull Warmening.

I was stuck in a hotel room last week, caught something like 30 seconds of weather channel. They were breathlessly talking about the number of 100F days in parts of Texas this year.

They put up a chart that showed various locations, with this year's number of 100F days (in the 40s), the average number (in the 20s), and last year's (single digits!).

Hey, did anybody notice if you combine this year with last year, you get the average??

This is surely a bit extreme. Humans make globally detectable changes to the earth through agriculture and burning of fossil fuels. Whether through more localized problems, like acid rain, to larger scale changes like a rapid increase in atmospheric CO2 levels and ocean acidification. These changes are much more significant than normally observed, and almost certainly related to humanity.

The resulting levels, though, aren't unprecedented historically, though, so thinking it's going to lead to the end of civilization, or life on earth, is extreme and unsupported.

232 Precisely! Have you been reading about the Altzheimers research?

It's ironic -- I used to work someplace where there were researchers working on Alzheimer's, and they were having a hell of a time with results based on the prevailing "theory." 299 I was looking for research recently, on why the average life expectancy for people with Down Syndrome seems to have gone up dramatically,

*******

If I were to hazard a guess, I would attribute it to increased willingness to offer life-saving heart surgery to infants with Down syndrome, which even into the 80's was not so much an accepted practice. It's still very rare to see a Down syndrome patient older than 45. The increase in average life expectancy is mostly on the infant side of the equation as opposed to actual increase in longevity in adulthood.

312 And let's not forget the separate, central flaw in the "climate" non-science: the idea that any temperature trend actually occurring has any connection to human activity, or CO2, is merely an outlandish hypothesis, with no evidence to support it.

So we have no data trend, and an outlandish hypothesis to "explain" it.

317 If nobody's mentioned it, it's even worse (of course).

Since 2005 NOAA has maintained a network of 114 stations across the lower 48 and Alaska, carefully located to avoid heat-island or other distortions. The U.S. Climate Reference Network.

Guess what that network shows in the last 15 years?

No warming trend. Oops. Oopsie.

318 A lot of CO2 comes out of the oceans as they slowly warm, but man surely has some effect, especially since CO2 is only 400ppm.

The guy that used to be with Greenpeace seems to think man saved the planet by putting more CO2 in the air. We were down to 280ppm (?) or so, where plants don't grow as well. Under 200 or so and we all die.

The greening of America, especially more arid areas, was helped by higher CO2. More green areas in arid places might have some effect on climate, but not much effect from the CO2 itself. But bottom line, AGW is just one more hoax they use to collect money and destroy our liberty. War.

321 Ok, here's the thing about the drought in western US which is basically defined as the Colorado River Basin. It is very real, very severe and very long, extending over 20 years now where the river system got less than average annual precipitation 20 out of the last 22 or so. Note that rainfall has almost no impact whatsoever on total annual precipitation. The VAST majority of the water comes from the winter / early spring snowpack on the Sierra Nevada mountains that resupply the reservoirs during the spring runoff. The Colorado river system has a very well known boom and bust cycles. Powell and Mead were set up specifically to help manage water needs through the bust cycles. Unfortunately the water allocations were set up in the early 20's when the surveys were conducted in an unusually wet period and it's over-allocated. Note that you can't simply stop letting water out of Powell and Mead. Lower basin states (California, Arizona, New Mexico and Mexico) have water rights and they cannot be cut off. Right now the Feds have declared shortages and everyone's allocations are curtailed. Stage Two shortages will likely get declared next year and will be curtailed further.

325 Thing is, though, that these corrupted stations are actually measuring higher temperatures, since they are so heat-biased.

But if the temperatures are higher in these spots, for there to not be warming means that there must be off-setting cooling occurring elsewhere - cooling which is not being captured by these stations. Likely broad-area stuff, rather than cool spots versus hot spots, but it never shows up anywhere.

So, where is the off-setting cooling happening, and why does none of it show up on anyone's equipment?

Posted by: LCMS Rulz! at July 29, 2022 01:00 PM (K58O6)

326 Remember: *SOMEONE* had to make the decision of where to place these devices. *SOMEONE* had to make the decision of where to move them later. And *SOMEONE* had to communicate to the grunts out in the field who actually had to move them.

There's got to be a documentation trail left behind that details who moved it, when it was moved, and who gave the order to do so. Run the #'s, see what correlations exist in the data. Run it against the 4% of non-corrupted stations as well, see how they compare and what the differences might be.

Because if you have to falsify and lie and cheat in your crusade, you're going to have a lot of people become "infidel" when they realize the con.

After all, if the perps are obviously guilty, you don't need to plan evidence on them, do you?

328 For much of the 1980's I was stationed at Luke AFB, Az. This was pre internet so I read the newspapers and watched the evening news. All of a sudden Bullhead City Az started winning the hot spot in the country, often beating Death Valley. Some months later a story was done explaining why. It seems the weather station sat in the front yard of the local fire station for years when someone got the bright idea to move it around to the back yard. The front yard had a lawn which was well taken care of while the back yard was just desert. That simple act raised the daily temperature by 10 degrees or more and earned them the country's hot spot on most days.
