Duncanthrax's Empire of Bats Cafe

littlewhitebats.jpg
Honduran white bats,
sheltering under a leaf

Basically this whole thread is to keep Duncanthrax appeased for the next six months.

TheBatBnB makes Bat Bed-and-Breakfast boxes for bats to congregate and sleep in, to help save the bats. They posted a lot of the pictures I'll be posting in this thread.

"Have you ever heard of 'electronic mail'? You'll be hearing about it in the future, some nerds tell us."

Bad-tomato rejecting machine. Pretty nifty.

Bike race in the 1920s.

Commenters were talking about the Tacoma Bridge a while ago. Here it is on the day of its collapse.

Bear home invasion. The cubs whine and yammer about who gets the seed-covered ball of suet (which was hung for the birds).

Dogs just want to be doing whatever it is you're doing. You fascinate them.

What I hear in my head is, the sad end theme from The Incredible Hulk TV show...

Teaching a dog to "whisper-bark."

Thanks to JackStraw:

"Cueva de los Murcielagos" means "Cave of the Bats." If you're wondering how that word came to mean "bats:"

Old Spanish mur ("mouse") + ciego ("blind")

Mur for mouse comes from Latin mus.

What the what.

It tried too hard. And yet, not enough.
It was kind of gay. Not gay, but, you know.
Gay.
Garrett would've liked it.

80 49 Guano was one of the main reasons for German's WW1 defeat. They could no longer obtain it, mostly from Chile, due to naval blockade. They came up with a way to synthesize the nitrates, but only in quantities sufficient for munitions, not fertilizer. Lack of fertilizer, and ending crop rotation resulted in poor quality followed by poor yield.

179 Someone mentioned in the last thread that Embracer Group is buying Tolken Enterprises, which as the main holding company for Tolkein's work would put them in charge of who gets to do what with the hobbitses.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. Embracer is the business entity behind Nordic Games, aka THQ Nordic, and they're generally considered one of the less evil publishers. They've been buying a lot of good but mismanaged properties lately. Of course, it's useful to bear in mind that EA was famously the good guys until they got big enough to morph into the bad guys, but at least for now

It does mean that you might see more niche LOTR stuff. Historically, the Nordic business model is that two interesting but not quite AAA games are better than one AAA game.

216 Guano was one of the main reasons for German's WW1 defeat. They could no longer obtain it, mostly from Chile, due to naval blockade. They came up with a way to synthesize the nitrates, but only in quantities sufficient for munitions, not fertilizer. Lack of fertilizer, and ending crop rotation resulted in poor quality followed by poor yield.

Yes, forgetting where your ammo comes from is just one of the smart things the clever Germans did. But Germany was also not self sufficient on food, and when they went to war they were in trouble, fertilizer / blockade problems aside. 282 MTG is introducing legislation to make it illegal to sexually mutilate children AKA "gender affirming care."

https://bit.ly/3Ax4Tcp

I am absolutely thrilled. I'm also curious why this legislation isn't being introduced by a more mainstream member. So far MTG has five co-sponsors. I'm hopeful she'll have a number more.

This is a winning issue that will definitely highlight the difference between them and us. Unfortunately, I'm fairly certain "them" will include several of our squishy rogue's gallery including Romney, Graham, and the usual suspects.

Peanut Butter has always been expensive. Jiff had a huge recall recently due to salmonella, too. That drove up the price a lot. Of course, it's even worse lately.

NY has dipped its toes into making a text, history, or tradition argument in defense of their "good moral character" requirement of their conceal carry permit system.

They have argued in a real court filing that Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Virginia passed laws to forbid American Indians from carrying. Yes, friends, they really are arguing their laws have history or tradition roots in racist laws.

320 There is an organization called Bat Conservation International (www.batcon.org). They own a cave near San Antonio, TX named Bracken Cave. The cave houses a maternity colony of Mexican Freetail bats, the largest concentration of bats in the world. When the population of the cave is at its peak, there are upwards of 30 MILLION bats living in it. When they leave the cave at night, it takes over 3 hours for all of them to depart!

If you are a member of BATCON, you can visit the cave once a year to see the bats leave. I've done it twice. It is breathtakingly incredible.
