Ice Queens Cafe

womendeliveringice1912.jpg
Women delivering ice, 1918
from @ILoveH1story

A five-month old rescued horse with an undiagnosed, untreated leg injury keeps trying to hide herself in the corner because she's hurt and afraid. But the introduction of a weird little spunky horse brings her out of her shell.

Speaking of weird animals, more of Taylor Blake and her Weird Animal Farm.

Dog doesn't like pranks on his grandma.

Single-minded people are a danger to others and to themselves.

Pole-climbing sandals.

Have you heard about the new technology called "cellular telephones"?

What if you could search all the works of William Shakespeare in just a second?

Not a fun video. "Butterfly effect" traffic jam and collision @TheFigen says. I don't think there are any deaths or even any serious injuries, but traffic pile-ups are never fun to watch, so use your own discretion.

"Well now who's this handsome drink of water?"

Dog - 10, pool maintenance - 1.

This dog actually skips in and out of the pool like he's a stone skipping on a pond.

Happybellies.

Mr. and Mrs. Lion, cannoodling.

Punchy cat.

Happy swan, happy life.

Capybara and Capybara, Jr.

One Lucky Guy!

Duck family out for a walk.

Stray Puppy GrubHub.

Garrett should enjoy this: it's a highlight reel of huge painful boners.

Note: Everyone seems to think the below clip is nonsense. Everyone sees the horse walking backwards.

My dad did it for a summer or two, on the advice of his High School football coach, to stay in shape. While refrigerators were making inroads at the time, they were expensive and the poor folks kept their ice boxes well into the refrigerator "era". Lots of stairs to climb in apartment buildings hauling 25 or 50 pound blocks. There was a card you'd put in the window to let them know how much you wanted.

A huge round building, it looks much larger on the inside. Right next to the river, they'd cut chunks up out of the river, and load up the Ice House, and cover it up in sawdust for insulation. According to the internet (so it's gotta be true), sawdust was widely used as insulation in houses and attics until more modern materials (fiberglass, foam, etc.) became available. Something about the cellulose makes it a pretty good insulator.

127 "Insulation" is dead air space. It doesn't matter too much what it is, so long as it has loft, and traps dead air. Steel wool would work as well as goose down. If you have two wool blankets, you could stuff it with moss or straw between and keep a lot warmer, I expect.

Apparently it works very well. Someone who knows science sexually can explain this better than I can, but ice exposed to air seems to melt more slowly than ice exposed to water - maybe the water acts as an accelerant with the air.

Sawdust absorbs the melting water, and also protects the ice from the air. Stick it underground with good insulation and it lasts a long time.

My grandmother only used a/c when it was absolutely necessary. When she built her house she had an attic fan installed that was the side of a fighter engine prop and produced phenomenal wind. Sucked the air in from the outside and blew it out through the attic. Worked pretty well.

The other thing she did was at bedtime, immerse your forearms in cool water. From wrist to elbow. Hold it for a minute or so. Your blood will actually cool and by the time you are done, your whole body will be cooler, almost chilled.

Then set a cool damp cloth near the bedside. If you want up, moisten your skin and let the air dry it. Helps get back to sleep.

Eastern Ice Company was based in Newport, RI but got ice from frozen lakes all over the state and in MA starting in the early 1900's. They moved a few years ago to an industrial park because the technology of ice, refrigeration, can be done anywhere and their Newport property was worth many millions.

Boats and fisherman still use a lot of ice so the company is still thriving.

190 "I think the thing with the ice is they would saw big blocks of it out of frozen ponds and lakes, then store it"

the oldest structure on my old family farm is the ice house, which was here before great grandpa bought the place in 1911. Has a lot of the original wood, not specially stained, but still solid.

I wondered about making a small insulated swimming pool full of water with antifreeze, run tubes through it to transfer heat in and out. In when temperatures were very cold in winter, then out as a coolant for cooling the house. ... It probably would work ... but electric AC works also, and is most likely cheaper (for now).

Ceiling height is a north/south thing. Since hot air rises, you want really high ones in warm climates to keep it away from you.

Up north, you have the ceilings lower to keep you warmer in the winter.

And of course you might make rooms with different height for different times of year. People were clever like that.

If you ever lived in an old unremodelled house you might find a strange kitchen cabinet that had two vents to the outside, and slotted shelving.
That was used as a cool box or an ice box using the natural flow of air,
You could put ice in it if you wanted stuff extra cool

Generally you would have a separate ice box, that had a drain or a pan under it to catch the melt water.

256 Those TWSBI pens get great reviews and are a tremendous value. I don't have one but use Lamy Safari fountain pens which are a similar value and also get excellent reviews. They aren't a Pelikan 600 or Sheaffer Levenger Seas pen but they are good writers, very reliable and comfortable to use. Either would make a great beginner's fountain pen. The nibs are even easily swapped out for different widths.

If they kill you before they start eating you, you might not get to enjoy that special "circle of life" moment. It's a kindness on their part, really.

There were also setups that had a small hatch on the outside of the house. Those were so the iceman could load in fresh ice without having to come inside.

Same thing with hatches to dump coal into the basement coal bin.

I believe that some urban areas also did that for toilets. Like an outhouse seat with a bucket underneath, and a hatch on the outside of the house so the pissboy could empty the bucket without coming in.

389 Apparently it works very well.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at July 28, 2022 08:16 PM (llXky)

There was a guy from England who found that a mix of ice and sawdust formed a hard, durable and surprisingly slow melting mix that he proposed they make huge aircraft carriers out of, since the decks could be insanely thick and you could repair them with a tank of water and sawdust.

His name was Pike or Pyke, the mix was named Pykrete. I think one of the experiment shows tried making a boat out of one.

You've pretty much got it. What you're seeing is a projection of the spacecraft's orbit as seen from the ground. As far as the spacecraft is concerned, it's just circling the planet while the ground is moving underneath it.
