A Music Thread [Joe Mannix]

I love CDs and have a large (for me, anyway) collection of them. I like the physical format. I like the jewel cases and their various colors. I like the liner notes. I like being able to pop a disc into the player, kick back, and leaf through the notes while I listen. I like the album art, too. Of course, you also get all of this with records and tapes, but I like CDs because the sound quality is high and reproduction is perfect when I make copies.

Something has changed in the past few years when it comes to the cases. The CD tray in the jewel case normally contains an embossed logo like the one you see at the top of the page:

But the norm is changing. I have purchased some more recent titles new and noticed that the disc trays in the jewel cases have changed. They still have a very subtle blanking surface in the right place, but it doesn't contain the logo. It's just a blank molding cutout:

Why did this happen? My guess is that the manufacturing for jewel cases is now bottom-dollar on old equipment, and the new operators aren't paying the small fee to use that logo in production. In other words, the format is in its final decline. The CD party that has lasted for around 40 years - a long time, by the standards of music formats - is about to end.

So what is the future of my favorite format? I don't know. Probably a lot like records are today: band merchandise. Limited edition products produced as collectibles from the get-go.

Exceptional live performances
Sometimes a live performance is a real stand-out. This performance of "This Tornado Loves You" by Neko Case led me to buy a couple of her albums because I really liked her voice. I found that, as much as I want to, I don't really like Neko Case. She has a great voice and a competent band, but I just don't really like any of her songs. Oh well. This remains a great performance from the Letterman show:

Great covers
Daryl Hall (of Hall & Oates fame) really knows how to retire. He did a series called "Live From Daryl's House" where he plays with other artists. He did one of these with Scotland's KT Tunstall and one of the songs they performed was the Bonnie Raitt standard "Something to Talk About." They killed it and I think this is a great version of that song. This clip includes a fair amount of preamble, so jump right to about 1:30 to get the song:

Cool music videos
I like music videos and some of them are pretty cool in their own right. The video for "Do I Wanna Know" by the Arctic Monkeys starts out as a simple waveform line and adds color until it shifts into increasingly crazy and somewhat psychedelic animation. I think it's clever, visually interesting and well done.

Arbitrary picks from my collection
In no particular order or implications of quality, here are four songs I've heard recently.

Garbage - Deadwood
This isn't off an album, but is a B-Side from the "I Think I'm Paranoid" single. I always thought this one should have landed on an album.

Muse - Thought Contagion
I am not a huge fan of Muse's more recent work since it is much more electronic than I like, but a lot of it remains thematically interesting, and this song fits into that category. I think it's about social media. Your mileage will, of course, vary.

Stone Temple Pilots - Lounge Fly
This track wasn't of any note on the album "Purple." It wasn't a hit single and it didn't find use in tons of TV shows and movies at the time, but I like it.

Dwight Yoakam - Ain't That Lonely Yet
The woman did him wrong and he ain't going back.
Once there was this spider in my bed / I got caught up in her web / Of love and lies
I like this one. It's simple, tells its story, gets the job done, is well put together and has some nice lyrics.

1 After putting together a collection of about 400 CDs, this is disheartening. And it is much preferable to have hard copies, be they vinyl, CDs, or cassettes. (I still have all my cassettes from HS.)

Physical is yours. Streaming is someone else's. Streaming is great for variety and discovery, but I'm a big fan of physical media.

I agree with Joe Mannix that the CD is a fine format...I'll be sad to see it go, mostly because the sound quality is superb, especially in comparison to the current compressed formats.

I really like KT Tunstall. I think I have all of her albums (I'm not sure), and they're all different. Some are really good, some are ... not. Some are pop, some are bluesy, some are on the edge of being western, etc. She has a pretty wide range.

For that matter, analog recordings have higher res. 44.1 represents a serious "rounding off" of the sound waves.

I'd be more worried about scratches than delamination. I think sunlight can be destructive, but how many of us leave them out in direct sunlight?

I have DVDs that I've had for over 20 years and they still play fine. I think as long as you take care of your CDs, you should be fine for quite a while.

They can delaminate, but it's rare and usually is because of physical trauma like storage in a high humidity environment or a totally uncontrolled environment (freeze/thaw cycle). The bigger problems are mold, degradation of the plastic layer and bit rot. Bit rot happens on CDs, too. A CD can look perfect with no blemishes or scratches and yet some songs - or the entire thing - just won't play because the data got corrupted. This is more common for CDs manufactured in South America, IIRC.

I archive everything to hard disk so if the CDs fail then I still have copies, but I've only ever encountered one bit-rotted CD (perfect appearance but problems playing) so far. Much bigger problem on Laserdisc, though - a lot of those rot away.

20 I got rid of all my cassettes from high school. Most of them had lost all the high end so I had to replace them.

Still have all of my vinyl and CDs, though I should get around to culling the collection of things I’ll never listen to or read at some point.

Common nowadays. CD drives take a lot of space and use power. Having a CD drive makes "thin and light" and "ludicrous battery power" more or less impossible. They used all of that space for batteries and to make the thing lighter.

If it's any consolation, though, it wasn't really cloud that killed off the CD drive in portable computers, it was the USB flash memory stick.

a friend took me there around 1980 and the salesman showed me a brand spanking new Sony CDP 101

wasn't much in the way of CDs at that time outside of long hair

but I still forked over the 8 or 900 bucks for the sucker

sold it on EBAY 10 or 15 yers ago for about he same amount

It's not an argument I bother with. I have a very good HiFi with very good digital and analogue signal paths. I can listen to high-res audio (SACD or DVD audio, both of which I have in my collection) encoded up in the 96k space and I just don't hear a difference between them. CDs are good enough for me. There may be people who hear high enough to hear a difference, but I am not one of them. The way bigger difference - and it isn't an analogue vs. digital issue - is in mixing and engineering. A well-engineered album will sound good regardless of the format. An indifferently-engineered album with the "loudness" switch turned to 11 is going to sound lousy regardless of the format. A crappy mix at 96k is still a crappy mix.

I like the streaming because I get to listen to a lot of artists I never heard of before. Plus, easy searching (unlike sorting thru 1000+ CDs...)

I never had a problem with it- some DVDs have or had anti-copy software, but I've always been able to copy CDs to my pc's hard drive

Pretty sure that's supposed to be 44.1kHz. The highest audio frequency a CD can hold is about 22kHz. If you want to know why, then we get into Shannon's law and a bunch of other esoteric stuff.

40 Years ago, a friend of mine set up an A B comparison, one (A) was an LP on a turntable with a nice tube pre-amp and the (B) was a CD player.
We toggled (literally) from one to the other.
The difference was noticeable to us, but the thing was, we were both under 40 years of age at the time.
After age 40, most of us have some hearing loss, so, yes you may not notice the difference.
CDs are damn convenient. And I am experiencing some that won't "load" due to age.

I understand the arguments about ownership, but it's just too damn convenient having all of this music on my phone, capable of syncing it up to any number of devices. It could go south. 45 I play Youtube while at the office; currently exploring 'sunnyboy66' channel. If you want Zambian rock'n'roll, 1960s Singaporean girl groups, or Spanish garage bands, it's a great channel with an amazing playlist.
Narcocorridas too, those are often interesting.
Glenn Gould, and some of the now less-known European composers of the 1800s.
Akira Ifukube, of 'Godzilla' fame, has a very deep catalog of very well-done classical.

I've used Exact Audio Copy to create perfect backups of all of my CDs over the years.

I rarely purchase CDs these days. But, when I do, I immediately rip them via EAC to FLAC and save them off to my NAS. The only "digital purchases" I've made had FLAC options which I'm totally fine with.

I think it's one of the greatest album of all time. Every single track is excellent. How many albums can say that?

I'm usually lucky if I like half the songs on a typical album.

Definitely. I sort of subscribe to the power of and on this one. Streaming is great to discover new things and for convenience. CDs are great for ownership and for the end-to-end "I am going to listen to this album as activity in its own right" thing.

I have my entire CD collection on hard drive, too, and I have that hooked up through Plex so I can stream it anywhere and get all of the convenience aspects, too. There's no right answer to this one, in my opinion and there's plenty of room for both.

52 I'm another fan of CDs. The sound quality is about as good as I can appreciate. And like having physical books, they are in my control, not at the whim of some remote entity and streaming demons. I've even got a couple of players still in the boxes for when the current ones malfunction. The 'cloud' can go F itself.

I shifted to CDs after I gave up on local radio. The '80s station changed formats, and to be honest, it was starting to get repetitious.

With CDs, I can play whatever suits my mood.

I know the phone can hold much more music, but the car doesn't have to be recharged.

My biggest problem is storage. I've filled one rack, and I can't find more. So a bunch lie on the rear floorboard.

I worry that somebody is going to break into the car and clean me out, but so far, so good.

61 CD changers are getting harder to find. Amazon only has two or three that are available new and they are $300 plus. I bought a Sony CD changer about five years ago and they don't even make it anymore. You can find shitloads of turntables on Amazon though. Funny how that turned out.

I like Curve a lot, too. Rumor has it that Butch Vig wanted Curve's lead singer Toni Halliday to be the front woman for Garbage, but she turned it down and so they went to Shirley Manson after seeing Angelfish on 120 Minutes. I have no idea if that's true, but it's a great story.

And I also really like the Curve EP collection, which was reissued as a single album called "Pubic Fruit." Curve's first set of radio performances with John Peel on BBC Radio are absolutely killer, too.

I saw on MTV (yes, ages ago!) a video starring Cheech Marin with Tommy Chong. The song wasn't memorable, but the business leading in to it was hilarious. All I can remember is that Cheech was speaking with a British accent and uttered the line: "It doesn't have to make sense! It's a bloody video!"

Oh, and his guitar had rubber chicken legs hanging from it.

83 I came across Neko Case when a local station played about half of her "Furnace Room Lullabyes" album. I've seen her live something like 6 times, but not since after the "Canadian Amp" tour. I dunno, the newer stuff ("Les of the Fox Murdered Bring the Flood" or something and after) don't really have it for me. Great voice though.
Porchlight, off of Furnace Room uses Kelly Hogan as the descant vocals, and their voices really just work together.

All hail the CD!

So speaking of jewel cases I think the jewel cases themselves are on the way out in favor of cardstock cases.

So recently ordered a couple of older albums from Amazon, Type O Negative's first two, and when they arrived one of them was broken in all the places it didn't need to be broken. I had also ordered Joe Satriani's last album. Cardstock case. Perfectly fine.

And most of the CDs I've bought the last few years have been some kind of cardstock or digipack thing. Fewer and fewer jewel cases since they don't handle mail order well.

As for the fate of CD? Well it's had a really long run. It was introduced in, what, early 80s? Maybe late 70? Vinyl only hangs around anymore because of hipster scum but the CD easily beat the 8-track and the audio cassette tape. Personally, I hope it sticks around for a while longer.

89 CD changers are getting harder to find. Amazon only has two or three that are available new and they are $300 plus. I bought a Sony CD changer about five years ago and they don't even make it anymore. You can find shitloads of turntables on Amazon though. Funny how that turned out.

Technically, neither should the phone if you’re listening to it in the car. At least using a USB connector to a car stereo. It should be carrying power.

I’m with “the power of AND” on this one. I rip every CD or vinyl to my computer, where the best tracks get transferred to my phone. I can easily search my collection and make up quick artist-oriented or year-oriented (or both) playlists.

I will often relax on a Sunday afternoon listening to a full album on the CD player (actually the DVD player) or record player.

But when I’m driving all I need is my phone to listen to my favorites or some sub-playlist. More than enough songs even for a week-long trip.

Logo likely disappeared for two reasons.

1. Data formatting shenanigans when companies were trying to make easy CD ripping on computers impossible for normies. Phillips threatened to sue anyone using the logo while not following the formal "Red Book" standard. By the early 2000s, it was easier for manufacturers to skip the logo, and avoid legal complications entirely. Also, little value in that "official seal of approval" as CD sales were in terminal decline.

2. Possible patent or trademark expiration. Dolby eventually let their cassette noise reduction stuff lapse. Current day novelty tape decks sometimes have a generic "noise reduction" switch, but none of the formal Dolby B, C, S, etc., settings.

111 The way bigger difference - and it isn't an analogue vs. digital issue - is in mixing and engineering. A well-engineered album will sound good regardless of the format. An indifferently-engineered album with the "loudness" switch turned to 11 is going to sound lousy regardless of the format. A crappy mix at 96k is still a crappy mix.

123 Re: Ripping CDs... My Green Day "Nimrod" CD is old enough that they were protecting them from being ripped (at least I think that is what is going on). As far as I know it is the only one I have like that. It will play in any Radio/CD player but never from a computer and attempted download results in lots of song skips. Makes me so mad because I'd really like to have "Hithchin' a Ride" on my phone.

Yeah, tons of newer stuff is in digipack instead of jewel cases. It ships better, but digipacks are *way* cheaper to produce, and can often be printed on demand. Since CDs are less popular now, being able to produce them just-in-time is probably appealing.

The downside to digipacks is that they're less robust over time. If the jewel case breaks or shatters, you can transfer the paperwork - which is probably undamaged - over to a new one and it's good as new. If the digipack gets scuffed or dented or torn, it will be scuffed or dented or torn forever. Regardless, digipacks or just straight cardboard sleeves are much more common now. If the last 10 newer releases I've bought, seven of them are digipack or cardboard sleeve (I just checked).

Tons of great songs on that one, and the artwork is perfect if you like the vaudeville-to-early film aesthetic. If you can't find that, you might try to get their best of "Rotten Apples" as it has some of the most popular ones from "Melancholy." I was lucky enough to get the special edition of "Rotten Apples" with the second disc of B-sides back when it was first released. My absolute favorite Pumpkins song is "Marquis in Spades" from those B-sides.

There is a group whose music I find incredibly compelling and each time the group pops up in the mix, I find myself always listening and often moved.
But, I('m just not sure that I really like listening to them,

The group is Anathema.

I don't care for their early stuff but for the last three albums they made a huge change to their music and compositional styles. And the music on these albums, "Weather Systems", "Distant Satellites", and "The Optimist" is deep, emotional, and compelling ear candy.

As far as I know it is the only one I have like that. It will play in any Radio/CD player but never from a computer and attempted download results in lots of song skips. This reminds me of one of the worst live performances I've seen (via recording). The Stone Poneys did "Different Drum" and you can find it on the official YouTube channel (Vevo). It's like the band is playing different songs while she's singing. It's amazing that Ronstadt was able to sing as well as she did (and she was damn near perfect)

Things are returning to normal here at Schloss Hadrian so I can return to my classical music playlist. Added the Nocturne by Gustave Samazeuilh and the Recitativo and Saltarello by David Van Vactor.

Of all the 4300+ pieces on the playlist, one (1) is in mono, the Liszt Grand Tarantelle Bravoure from Auber's La muette de Portici performed by György Cziffra. I don't know why I have such a prejudice against mono. Some of it sounds quite good.

I have her first couple of albums. I liked her up until she started moving toward pop with "Come on Over." She was a decent enough country artist but her pop stuff - especially "Up!" - never really delivered for me. "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under" is one I rarely skip when it comes up.

No need to burn space on WAV files. You can use FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) to save some space over WAV files without lossy compression. FLAC files are still big, but they aren't WAV big.

If you're in Apple land, they have the Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), which first shipped with iTunes and came standard on the hardware starting with some of the earlier (though not the earliest) iPods. It doesn't have stellar support outside of Apple, but it at least used to have universal coverage inside the Apple ecosystem.

No need to burn space on WAV files. You can use FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) to save some space over WAV files without lossy compression. FLAC files are still big, but they aren't WAV big.

Thanks. The problem with some classical music is the CD breaking larger structures into shorter tracks. Mp3 leaves a tiny gap between those tracks. Used to drive me nuts when downloading an album and having to take all those little gaps out.

Oh, geez, I'd forgotten all about that. One of the open source MP3 encoders (LAME) was popular in large part due to an early "gapless" setting that iTunes didn't offer until later. I think they had to hack a solution using metadata since it wasn't a part of the original MP3 spec. And I see that recent versions of Apple's Music app (inadvertently?) dropped gapless support since they assumed everyone had moved onto AAC by now.

What a mess.

Much like book stores, music stores (and the Best Buy music section) were a great way to spend a few hours on the weekend. That's one good thing about some of the streaming services is that it fills in the browsing gap left by the end of music stores.

Discs were a loss leader in the mid-to-late '90s to get people into stores, and I remember when they eventually jacked up prices in the early '00s at the same time worldwide CD sales peaked.

Was amazed to find the Jeremiah Johnson was a real mountain man who really did to many of those things. The film also cleaned up his life story quite a bit; one clue, he was also known as "Liver Eatin' Johnson." And it wasn't bison livers he was eating.

360 Darryl Hall is a very uneven musician and also asshoe. I saw him at SPAC (Saratoga) last year and he was cranky, disrespectful to Oates and just generally looked like he was walking through his set for a paycheck. Has some nice compositions though and when he hits a good tune it's good. There are such things as bad nights I know; but this really seems like the authentic Darryl.

OTOH the Opener (Squeeze) was an inspiration. Great rock/rockabilly and such a contrast to glum, cranky, erratic Darryl. They smashed all their hits, and played a lot of new music. Tight. Fun. Danceable. Having a great time themselves. Professionals who also loved their audience. If I get filthy stinking rich I'm hiring Squeeze for my 60th Birthday.

I don't know the technical terms for what I'm about to say, but here goes.

In Close Encounters, there was the scene where the scientists play various sequences of notes in order to communicate with the aliens. At one point the "conversation" takes on a life of its own.

John composed a number of pieces for NBC and the Olympics back in the day, and damned if he didn't use the same phrasing of the "conversation" to fill out the linking of a couple of passages.

I imagine that's along the lines of what you referenced.

I saw a YouTube video that Williams stole the Star Wars soundtrack from Gustav Holst's The Planets. It is simply not true. While they may be stylistically similar, they are quite different pieces.

Some criticize it because it ends with Christ's death, not his resurrection. But it didn't offend me. I thought it was wholesome.

413 I am sad and ashamed that I haven't been to any concerts since the 2 shows I went to in October 2019 (Queensryche, Chris Stapleton & Brothers Osborne).

J and I had tickets for Zac Brown last fall but they added a vax mandate, so we cancelled. (Got our money back promptly, much to our surprise!)

Collective Soul was supposed to play in Fort Collins last month but they had to back out at the last minute due to 'rona. They will be in Denver next month, but... Denver...

423 I like CDs, too. They are COMPACT, after all, and can be stored conveniently on small shelves. The booklets are very convenient, and can hold more information than the backs of 33 1/3 vinyl discs did. One of my favorite series of CDs is the 37 that Graham Johnson did of Schubert's songs. The booklets often are 30 pages or more with the texts of the songs and translations and information about what the song means and why Schubert composed it.

446 I make frequent rounds to the thrift stores to look for CDs. It's a crap shoot finding something interesting ( I mostly look for specific songs), but gems do show up, and sometimes I get dogs, but often for a buck apiece, you can't beat the price.
Oddly, all the Garbage CDs I've run across are often badly scratched...
