"It is unfortunate that despite all of the evidence the Department presented, including that the group or its leader had been told several times that they could not be in the buildings without an escort, that the U.S. Attorney's office declined to prosecute any members of the group for Unlawful Entry," Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger wrote Republican Reps. Rodney Davis of Illinois and Jim Jordan of Ohio in a letter dated Tuesday. Manger revealed in the letter that the nine members of Colbert's staff who were arrested June 16 for unauthorized access to a House office building had previously been rejected for press credentials by the House Radio/TV Gallery, had been warned multiple times they could not stay in Capitol buildings without an escort, and were ejected by police from the complex just hours before their arrest for violating building rules.
The chief also revealed that two of the nine staffers when arrested refused to cooperate, citing their Miranda rights, and that one of the staffers initially falsely told responding police officers the Colbert crew was "credentialed staff."

The problem is that if no one feels anyone has their backs, and they will be knifed if they step out of line, the only choice is to be the Grey Man and at least act like conforming - though actively conforming is safer.
One of the problems of heavy, long-term stress is that we, as humans, narrow the world down to "people we care for" and "potential attackers."

Lets see, I moved out of cramped, crime-ridden hovel built in the early 80's in Austin that is assessed by the county at nearly a half-million... moved out to the sticks where I have acreage, several hundred feet of lakefront on a private lake, decade old custom home that is twice the size for over a 100k less. My utilities and insurance are all cheaper (except for the flood insurance), private security, no crime and outside of the failing ERCOT.
Moving out of the city has already saved me over a grand each month in living expenses.

One of the problems with murder-mystery shows is that they don't seem to have the same re-watchability as action or comedy shows (unless they involve action or comedy elements, like Psych). Once you know "whodunnit" (or "howdunnit" in Columbo's case), they lose a lot of appeal for a rewatch, at least for me.

Wife's brothers did because her dad lost the farm to the bank and the kids had to eat. The oldest used to log with my step brother, who logged because his dad lost his farm to the bank. Step brother stayed rural even though he was a decent mechanic. He liked logging.

The preference for the farmers is to pass along their property and traditions to their children. But, most farms can't continue to be a going concern if they are split up. As a practical matter, the farm is passed down whole to one of the children. There is no law requiring that it go to the eldest son, but that is how it tends to work out.
If there is more than one child, the rest of them have to find something else. It still happens.

That scene was dark, but damn did it focus the seriousness of the situation, and how evil(?) the bounty hunter was. Most threats in the show were kind of laughed off, but that moment was serious...and helped justify Kayleigh giving away the information.
I put the question mark after evil because...I'm not sure if he would have done it, and if he really was evil. He was very serious, and mentally ill, but as far as he knew, he was tracking down an extremely dangerous fugitive/terrorist. He could have just killed thr crew as he took them out, but he didn't...so I think he was just brutally effective, but had a code of ethics of some sort. At least, that's how I recall...

These days remind me of the world in "Stand on Zanzibar" by John Brunner. It was a near future semi dystopia, but one feature was people just popping off an running amok here and there as a symptom. The title came from a population thing, that if everyone stood side by side they would all fit on Zanzibar.
Not a bad book but I don't remember too much about its details, it was kinda all over the place.

A lot of taxing and collection agencies can "write off" bad debts, just they have to be reviewed if an income source pops up.
Debt forgiveness of a loan or a credit card debt, or even part of a loan, it is counted as income for the state and feds, and is taxed. Biden may wind up putting those forgiven into a tighter vice because unlike the student debt, the states and IRS can garnish your wages, income, and if you have stock accounts or commission payments, they can take those 100% the minute they find them.

There are 3rd, 4th, 5th generations selling their family's farms because they're more interested in a condo downtown near the hipster joints and a Mercedes. Yet, at the same time there are those who've been living in the hipster joints who've grown tired of the crime and related bullshit and are ready to relocate to the hills.
The movement over the last couple years seems to side with those leaving the shit holes. What they may, or may not bring with them is debatable. I live rurally and this is what I see. The exodus from the cities is ongoing. There are issues with this. Some who relocate need to be "educated" or turned away... IMO.

He knew too much about them from the dialog for that to be reasonable, that he would think Kaylee was a physical threat or needed excessive terrorizing to cow. He was able to get that across to everyone else he spoke with without such threats.
River even mocked his code of ethics, saying that he enjoyed it rather than it was necessary, but even so, I don't think the rape threat to the most vulnerable person was justified by the plot. He was scary enough

No. There are many people who decide to pass down their businesses to only one of their children while the other children need to find some other path in life. It is not inherently evil. Especially if the parents are clear about what their children can expect to inherit, and help all their kids prepare for their future.
What is the alternative? Have the land pass to the state and have the farms run by the government? That would be, as you say, not good.

there are not many businesses where the parents just decide to give everything the oldest and nothing to the others. they might give somebody operational control but the others get financial benefits. that is much easier to do with something that is not land based.
even then it is very rare anymore for somebody with a farm to jsut give the entire farm to the oldest and nothing to the others.
why would you think that the other alternative was to have the state get the farm?
why not sell the far and divide the proceeds? why not finance the farm give ownership to the oldest and cash to the others. or, why not put it in a trust?
everything is better than what you suggest, which rearely ever happens anymore anyway

I'll be honest that I haven't thought about it that much as far as motivation or strategy. As the nic suggests, I'm a small woman so the threat was enough to make me sympathetic to Kaylee's plight and believe he would do whatever he needed to get to River. Knowing that kind violence in random situations is less likely than in a domestic situations, it is no less unsettling when the prospect arises.

My main gripe with it was the ridiculous, excessive use of the flashbacks, far beyond their utility as a plot device.
I think what probably happened was that Pratt and Fuqua contracted with Amazon for eight episodes, and realized once they shot it that they only had material for six, so they did some reshoots and stitched in a couple hours of flashbacks throughout.

That does seem to be an ongoing problem with modern shows. They need to have 8-10 episodes for a decent story, but they may not have enough material. So they try to pad out the episodes, which doesn't always work. Writers in Hollywood seem quite bereft of ideas or creativity...

Since it isn't a game, I'm not rooting for anyone, just being practical. I think a small town or village with a few thousand residents may be able to form a protective barrier to roving bands of armed urbanites. However isolated farms and hamlets not so much.
You may have noticed the propensity of these primitives to use fire as a first resort? I noticed this in Africa and then we have Seattle, Portland, Baltimore, Wisconsin as excellent local examples.

Those in isolated hamlets or villages or lone farms will temporarily relocate to larger communities to join the communal defense. Some won't make it, of course.
Think of the hobbits in the Shire at the end of Return of the King. Or the Two Rivers folk in The Wheel of Time when Trollocs are rampaging the countryside. Both J.R.R. Tolkien and Robert Jordan were veterans and went through horrific experiences. They knew a thing or two about how small communities could form a defense against evil.
