Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Gun Thread: July 24th National Thermal Engineer Day Edition!![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Engraved AR Receiver and a Hat I post under TB24601. My husband helped me put together my first AR and I had to get it engraved. The other side has 'Vera' engraved on it. I know some Morons will appreciate it! For anyone around Colorado Springs, we recommend Spartan Defense Armory & Training for engraving, cerakote and similar services.Awsomeness level 11! Is there any doubt TB24601 is a committed member of The Horde? Thanks for sending this in! Next up, our pal A.H.Lloyd makes a change! ![]() Charter Arms (top) and Taurus 85 (bottom) With a bunch of states now open up for concealed carry, some of our newly emancipated Morons might be interested in why I switched from my venerable Taurus 85 Total Titanium in .38 Special to a Charter Arms Undercoverette in .32 Magnum. I will begin by saying I really like revolvers as an EDC choice. While I have some alternate rigs, my mainstay has been the snubbie, a five shot .38 Special. It is light, compact and simple. I don't even have to think about whether I want a round in the chamber or if the safety should be on, all of that is irrelevant. The Taurus met all of those needs, so why am I swapping it out? What put the Undercoverette over the top? Well, there were several factors. The first is that the Undercoverette's grips are longer and provide better control. On the Taurus, the little finger is unsupported and usually rests along the butt. Having a full grip is nice. The second is the caliber. I think .32 Magnum has managed to achieve a sort of Platonic ideal in a self-defense caliber. Felt recoil is significantly lower than .38 Special, yet it produces superior kinetic energy. As you can see, .32 Mag hollow point absolutely destroys a gallon jug and it hit with such force that I actually got hit by some of the spray. Not only does it hit harder than .38, the cylinder can hold an additional round, so I now have six shots rather than just five. The biggest downside is finding ammunition, which has been particularly scarce and expensive of late. Still, the Undercoverette has several options when it comes to ammunition. In addition to using .32 Magnum, it can also safely use .32 S&W Long and .32 short. In fact, if you are someone who is very sensitive to recoil, getting one of these and using .32 Long in it is a viable option. Though some might call it a "mouse gun" caliber, .32 Long has twice the energy of .22LR or .25 ACP and it was a standard police cartridge for decades. Revolvers chambered for .32 Magnum are technically capable of using .32 ACP, but this is not officially recommended. Chris Baker of Lucky Gunner explains why. I've tested it and ammunition choice makes a very large difference in performance and reliability. I absolutely do not recommend using .32 ACP as a self-defense round in one of these revolvers. ![]() One issue with using different types of ammunition is that that point of aim can move around. This target helps illustrate that point. The orange tabs are .32 Magnum, and unsurprisingly they have the best placement. The green dots are .32 Long, and they typically fall a little lower, and I have the same experience in using .38 Special in a .357 Magnum. It may look like it is also far less accurate, but the flyers around the edge were the result of me experimenting with using a single hand and rapid fire. The pink dots are .32 ACP and you can see that they consistently hit low and to the right. An additional point in favor of the Undercoverette for me was that its similarity to the Taurus meant almost no learning curve. All I had to do was get a sense of the proper sight picture and I was good to go. As an added bonus, the Undercoverette is actually 1/4 ounce lighter when fully loaded. Is that significant? Not really, but if you look at the price points for the two weapons, it's remarkable that the Taurus, which I thought was the ne plus ultra of featherweights, can be surpassed with a conventional alloy frame. Add it all together and it's a lighter platform, better feel, less recoil, more power and higher ammunition capacity. It's not for everyone, but I'm pretty happy with it.How about it, .32 Magnum anyone? Great review AHL, and nice shooting! Thank you! Next, our pal Baron Munchausen offers the following PSA on a a Ruger Mark IV pistol recall. Here's what Ruger is saying on the recall webpage: Ruger recently discovered that all Mark IV pistols including 22/45 models manufactured prior to June 1, 2017 have the potential to discharge unintentionally if the safety is not utilized correctly. In particular, if the trigger is pulled while the safety lever is midway between the "safe" and "fire" positions, that is, the safety is not fully engaged or fully disengaged, then the pistol may not fire when the trigger is pulled. However, if the trigger is released and the safety lever is then moved from the mid position to the "fire" position, the pistol may fire at that time. Thanks Baron M! Anyone have one of the affected pistolas? Most of you know I tend not to include much here in the way of current events, rather choosing instead to focus simply on the hobby of guns and shooting. I'd be remiss, however, if I didn't mention that although we've had another deranged shooter, who opened fire killing three and injuring two more, this time there was a good guy present with a gun to take care of the problem. ![]() The countdown to the TXMoMe has begun. * I've got one and like it a lot. I didn't buy it as a gun safe so much as a way to keep little kids' hands off of it when I'm not in the room, but still allowing me to get to the contents quickly if needed. I'd love to find something similar for an AR or small pistol carbine type weapon. A clamshell that folds over the receiver would be ideal. "If you own a gun, learn how to use it and carry it wherever you go."
He hit 8/10 at 40 yards. I think a lot of us couldn't hit that at 25. And a lot of indoor ranges only go our to 25 or 30. But, still, I'm betting he spends time on fundamentals every time he goes to the range. Sight picture, grip, trigger pull, follow-through, breathing. Also, he used one of those pillars in the food court for cover and as a brace. I'm not sure most indoor ranges will let you shoot braced on the walls 'twixt lanes during regular range hours, even though it was always part of AF pistol qual courses (over brace, beside brace). And all in 15 seconds. Posted by: GWB at July 24, 2022 07:12 PM (SVBqo) 38

The end of weeks of musing, I finally resolved the Heritage Rough Rider dilemma. This is kind of math, but the $89 Rough Rider from PSA ends up costing a bit more with shipping and FFL charge, so I determined to get one locally. And then I find that they make a "tactical" version with a carbon fiber like grip and a RAIL. It's tiny, but its there. I have been joking that red dots will end up on SAA's. Well, here was my opportunity.
But that was a bridge too far even for me, and then I found that Heritage had a "Deadman's Hand" edition. The grips are plastic and printed with a skull and the famous deadman's hand of aces and eights. Prominent in there was the Ace of Spades. sra blaster had to take a trip so she missed our anniversary, and she also didn't get me a gift, so I let her know that this would suffice. Gun review: I took my new Sig P365XL to the range yesterday. It was my first range trip in, oh, maybe 2 years. Yes, I consider that a mortal sin, and I confess and repent unreservedly. I said 20 Hail Clint Smiths in penance.
Long story short: I like it. Positives: my old eyes can pick up the big green tritium sight nicely. Grip is extremely comfortable and doesn't bite the hand like many smaller 9mms. I'll sandbag and bench rest it later, but for the moment it's "minute of bad guy" accurate. Negatives: spare mags are expensive, and if you load 12 rounds it may cause difficulty chambering the first round (this may change after the break-in period). I'm waiting for a Crossbreed appendix carry rig, since I intend on hiding this under a dress shirt in case my workplace gets targeted (a not improbable scenario). I can do minute of man at 40 yards with my 1911. However, I've got probably close to 10K rounds though my Kimber.
Given half a chance, I can probably do a head shot at 20 yards. (See: security guard shooting gunman in a TX church) Again, though, lots of practice, on my part. I might add, I can make the above shots at the range, but, under pressure, with someone shooting back? No idea, and hope I never have to find out. In a thread a couple of months ago folks were talking about Golden Retrievers ago where a few were bemoaning the Goldens docility and basic uselessness as a watchdog.
I mentioned that people might want to consider getting a mildly popular "hybrid" called a Golden Chow. They display a moderation of the characteristics of both breeds. You don't see them around very much but in the video about breaking up dog fights, the "red" dog there is a Golden Chow, acting pretty much like they act. Personally, I had one and I'm afraid that all the other dogs I've had take a back seat to her. The other owners I've met over the years pretty much agree. There's a Fakebot group for enthusiasts. OK, as to the bad guy, and his first victim....
I don't know how many others have seen the info, but his very first victim was carrying (likely concealed, though no one has said, yet). The bad guy shot him as bad guy was exiting the bathroom (where he had stashed his second rifle, apparently as the fallback point when the police arrived). This is a prime case to remind you to 1) be in Condition Yellow if you're carrying, and 2) to ponder and possibly practice OTHER methods of self-defense than your firearm. It is entirely possible a step-forward-and engage-the-firearm tactic would have worked. Drawing your weapon from concealment might not have worked initially, timing-wise. But being ready for physical contact or engagement at point-blank ranges is not something many people train for. And all that training would be pointless if you're not mentally prepared and AWARE of what's going on around you! Have the mentality of a fighter. Be prepared mentally (like nurse with the homeless guy on the street corner). Think through scenarios in your head. Ponder the what-ifs. Posted by: GWB at July 24, 2022 07:40 PM (SVBqo) 143

A question for this august assembly.
Over the past few weeks we've seen a number of public threats issued by various leftist zealots threatening violence, particularly in response to Dobbs. Yet other than property damage...not much. Is it possible that Rittenhouse's acquittal after dropping two and maiming one has resulted in a crisis of morale in the Soros SA? Does the swift resolution of the Indiana situation add to further demoralization? I mean, it's all fun and games to smash the abandoned storefronts in Seattle and Portland, but those midwesterners don't take prisoners. Posted by: Former Gun Owner A.H. For a first-time owner or smaller shooter, the 32 mag would be a fine choice: easy recoil, revolver simplicity, and lots of potential accuracy. Posted by: JTB at July 24, 2022 07:49 PM (7EjX1) 190

Visited a penguin sanctuary down in Argentina. The penguins did not fear humans. But they did not like you getting into their personal space. Walk up and they were okay. At about 3 feet they would turn their back to you. At two they would launch foul green and yellow liquid shit that would close the gap. Sounded like a partly empty squeeze mustard container.

I'm a pretty decent shot and I'm not sure I'd have engaged at 40 yards because of the possibility of collateral damage to bystanders. That's somewhat mitigated by the fact the shooter was in the process of creating a lot of his own damage to innocent bystanders. I can see both arguments. I think it's the sort of decision you make when you are there, have a weapon, and know how to use it.

For those of you wanting to practice drawing from a holster, please, if you've not done it before practice in front of the mirror.

I started practicing with my 1911 at 40 yards. Eli is an inspiration. I've never shot it an anything that far away. First take, I get only half my shots on target at that range. Man sized target. Not in Eli's league but better than I feared. Posted by: Muad'dib at July 24, 2022 08:02 PM (sKIIv) 236
Everyone is impressed with Eli's shooting in the mall, taking out that misguided punk with all due speed and accuracy.
The rational mind wants to say training and good tactics etc, but there's another option which is just as likely. I can get one at an attractive price, but the split rail means an extra $150 or more to get an attachment rail that bridges them to get an additional 20 or 30 MOA (zero MOA, otherwise), AND then you apparently have to use their proprietary rings (which are reported to be of good quality). Alright, I'll delurk for a little range report:
Took my 2 older boys (15 and 12) out to the nearby shooting area while we where up camping. Had my home-built 350 Legend AR, home-built 1911, wife's Browning 1911-380 and my 327 Mag Ruger LCR. Very first shots out of the AR where minute-of-badguy at 20 paces or so. With a simple carbine stock, you definitely feel the 350. They enjoyed the pistols and put up with a couple full-power loads from the magnum. Which are not usually bad, but I had my carry grip on. As one of my friends remarked, the only reason HE would have shown up was if a super-hot chick said that she and her also super-hot girlfriend needed him to defend their trendy coffee shop and they would be soooo grateful for his bravery and courage.

First of all none of us were there, so all we have is the police reports. The perp was shooting and literally killing people in the food court as soon as he came out of the bathroom when the good guy engaged him. The video shows him randomly shooting into the crowd at the food court.
But this is important, he took those shots and demonstrably saved countless lives. The police didn't show up for almost 10 minutes no matter what happened dozens of people would have been killed if not for the kid taking out the shooter. Posted by: confederatefifth at July 24, 2022 08:05 PM (kIwYf) Did you read the next sentence? About talking? A citizen (even a cop) has every right to say something like that to you. Just like he has a right to ask you to turn your music down. And a responsible citizen actually takes into account things like "making people nervous" when he exercises his rights. The drive to eliminate that self-governance is a huge part of the problem in our country today. A responsible citizen might retort with "I understand, and I plan on making my visit short. If you want to accompany so you make sure I don't do anything evil, I'm ok with that." (see? TALKING.) Posted by: GWB at July 24, 2022 08:20 PM (SVBqo) 302

And Weasel yes I have the Mil-Spec 1911. Got it (slightly used, my preferred buying strategery, from a guy switching to 38 Super in a 1911) back when they just phased out the GI model (yours).
My dain bramaged memory wants to say there were 3 changes - lowered (bigger) ejection port, bigger sights, and curved mainspring housing (?). Of course the serrations at the rear of the slide were switched to "angled" from straight up/down. Something like that. I thought some of these changes were the last ones done by the military when the 1911 was still in service, but that could be completely wrong. Anyway - love the 1911, kept it stock like everything I have. Trigger is still laughable compared to fancy shmancy competition triggers like the guys have at matches where I shoot, still heavy, but I will stick with my approach of "shooting it smoother" - if only to further rationalize more shootin' (always a good default position). Ben Had,
If I can put in my two cents for the "shoot and scoot" course, how about having something like the guys on the "9 Hole Reviews" You Tube channel have for their "Close Range Practical Accuracy" course? It has the following stations: Station 1: Deploy weapon. Two targets, 7 yards. Station 2: Shoot on the move. One target, 7 yards. Station 3: Barrier shot. Target 1 is a 7 yard hostage target. Target 2 is a 10 yard target. Shoot from behind cover on both targets. Reload on the move to Station 4 if no prior reloads. Station 4: Far target. One target, 35 yards. All targets require 2 hits to clear except for the last (Station 4), which requires six. Looks pretty challenging to me. Scoring uses IPSC (?) methodology, with total points divided by time to complete the course in seconds. Posted by: Ed L at July 24, 2022 08:23 PM (/lmRp) 315
I bought a Ruger .32 HR magnum, in its inception. I have it in my ledger of Dumb Guns. Maybe I just got it too early.
The entire point of that cartridge is small game and saving lead, with reloading. But when I bought it, that gun was fucking expensive and so was the brass. It did nothing a used .38 couldn't do, and 5 vs 6 was meaningless. I declared it a Dumb Gun. I haven't changed my mind since. I did come into a SW .32-20 6", and that gun would have been Awesome in .32 HRM but whatever. Dumb. Gun. Posted by: LenNeal at July 24, 2022 08:23 PM (U11/V) 316

Really pleased with the rifle, very budget build, only 2 feed hangups out of 30+ initial rounds. My 1911 ran like a top, as usual. I need to look at the Browning, it would hang >just< before full lockup. Could be related to grip and follow through. But, it doesn't even have a full box of ammo through it yet. Did have fun after hours, nicest time of the day, having main range all to myself, moved around trying shoot up the last of my HXP surplus ammo (and burning a Flor de Oliva bundle stick).
A federal law enforcement agency that wears green and is supposed to police the country's boundaries is now informally mentioning to us that it would be wise to carry something loaded in the front seat until back to the highway, when leaving the range (about 3 miles or so). Great gobs of more interesting stuff going on since the country opted for some self-destruction in 2020, foreign travel consultant entrepreneurs now penetrating much further into the US. It's fussy, high-pressure, and quite unforgiving, and let's not discuss the perfection of certain brand with unsupported chambers. The 10, however, accommodates lower loads like that like a champ. Have only held (not shot) the CZ Scorpion PCC, but is sure did feel nice. The Ruger PCC, have shot several times at the range when customers insist (!), easy as pie. First time I touched one, had a steel plate hanging @100 yds. Guy had a sub-$20 red dot on it. Shot - ping. Shot - ping. Every time. Ridiculous.
Some day hope to get around to building a super-light 9mm AR platform version, for fun, and the boss's use in "home defense" (this latter term to be pronounced with a heavy rural southern accent). Posted by: rhomboid at July 24, 2022 08:36 PM (OTzUX) 367

For a .45 ACP PCC, what about the original KRISS Vector in .45 ACP? It used Glock 21 magazines. Granted, it's much cooler (and arguably, more practical) as an SBR w/ a vertical foregrip and the extended 25 round magazines. It came out about ten years ago now. My Ruger PC9 is... finicky... with Glock mags. I haven't shot it much; I'm hoping that it's not a consistent problem. One reason I bought the darned thing is because it takes Glock mags, and I have a ton of those.
Posted by: PabloD at July 24, 2022 08:31 PM Same here and I gave up on the Glock mags and switched it back to the Ruger mags. I only get 17 rounds but I have yet to have a FTF or a FTE since I did that. When I was running glock mags I had a 2-3 round failure in every 15 round magazine. And the 33 glockazine rounds mags were such a complete disaster i gave up on them early on. Mine has over 600 rounds through it so it isn't a "break in" problem. If you've got the coin, HK SP5 or SP5K-PDW. Expensive as heck, but arguably the best shooting, most reliable, most accurate, and lightest recoiling PCC available today. And, it comes w/ the HK cool factor being a truly iconic (semi-auto only) SMG of the modern age.

The larger point with "gun free" zones is an interesting one.
I think most of us are instinctively law-abiding, and when the laws are unjust, we seek to change them through established methods. But the Indiana incident does raise some intriguing questions about whether risking whatever state-level sanction is worth the preservation of life. Hypothetical question: What if would-be shooters began to suspect that otherwise law-abiding citizens were going to show the same deference to "gun-free zones" that they do? Did get to the range, sorta, yesterday.
Lazy Messenger, the Nurse and I did some outdoor shooting. I scored a metal target in a neighbors garage for abusively cheap and we got to ring some steel as well as do some draw + fire drills at multiple, close range targets. Personal best that day: 4 seconds to draw, fire, hit 3 targets with two shots each and no misses. Short range but I'm still very happy with that score (glad I brought/bought that shot timer). The PSA Dagger (gen 2 with Vortex Venom) is doing amazingly well. Especially for what's basically a $300 pistol. Love using 17 round PMAGs in them, no reload troubles at all. Posted by: confederatefifth at July 24, 2022 08:25 PM Sigh. Well, first, as others have pointed out, the hero wasn't in Texas. Second, in Texas, that depends. I can post a sign that simply says "No guns", and it has no force of law. To have the force of law, the sign must have the specified wording AND be in the specified format and location. Now let's say I open carried into an establishment that didn't have the proper signage. I haven't broken any law. The owner/manager/HMFIC can come ask me to leave. If I do so, I haven't broken any law. If I don't, I'm trespassing, and *that* can have legal repercussions. Posted by: Duncanthrax at July 24, 2022 08:46 PM (a3Q+t) 412

Good enough for John McLane good enough for me. As Ferris Bueller said, they are so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend it. But if you want the ultimate smile for your shooting dollar I continue to recommend the Extar EP9. At $449 it is easy to shoot and you can shoot it all day with whatever 9mm ammo you have. Posted by: GWB at July 24, 2022 08:43 PM I don't think it's the magazine, I suspect it is the guts you put in the gun. Specifically the mag well and the ejector. You replace the entire internal guts parts when swapping out the magazine internal bits. With Glock mags they feel lose and the ejector seems to catch rounds quite a bit. Like I said I have had zero problems since I switched back to Ruger magazines. It may be my gun or the way I am holding it and shooting it but so far no issues with Ruger factory magazines. I own a G3c but was tempted by the slightly lower prices on the G2c. The big difference seems to be the odd cutaways on the front top edges of the slide for the G2c, which some folks seem to think makes it harder to rack the slide. Some other very minor differences. I'm not going to spend the money (even though it's CHEAP) on another one (2 or 3) at the moment, saving up for my .45 1911. But it's a decent 9mm compact. Coming in late, in WI, the posted 'No Guns', and it varies state to state, and JJS is moving here, if you are identified as carrying a concealed weapon in a posted no-CCW zone, you can be asked to leave. It is not a criminal offense.
If you refuse to leave the premises whoever it is can tell you to leave, and if you don't, call the police and have you removed, trespassing, etc. But in WI, and specifically where JJS is moving to, it is in no way an immediate criminal offense. The lifepod is nice but if it isn't chained down, it can be carried away. No safe or lock is perfect.
* This is one of the other reasons that I bought mine, with the first already being mentioned (kids}. It has a cable that can be removed, wrapped around an object (think car seat mounting bracket), and reinserted into the lifepod before closing/locking. Would it stop a professional lockpicker? No. Would it stop someone breaking into your car who also had wire cutters? No. Would it stop a smash and grabber from making off with it? Yeah, probably. Again, it's not a safe. Anyway, back on carbines. Of course, I don't care what folks care to use, buy, train with it, have it with you. Carbines are much more versatile than pistols at everything but very short distance quick shots.
But I can stuff a side-folding AK with a 16 barrel in a tennis racket case and that works fine. Or I have an AR pistol, 10" barrel isn't ideal but it's still a rifle. Both work as discreet car guns. Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards (Logan Tiberius 2012-2021) at July 24, 2022 09:15 PM (xcxpd) 512

I feel bad missing the Book Thread, but I have threatened for years to write a series of vignettes/short stories and call it, 'THE BOOK OF GUNS', made up of totally subjective impressions of all the guns I've shot/and/or handled, which honestly runs close to 1,000 different objects. Not kidding.
Everyone would hate it, because reasons, but the single story of one of the first USA Glocks in the Glock Box, where that ATF plastic sight flew off with first round, and subsequent fun, would be worth the purchase. Posted by: LenNeal at July 24, 2022 09:16 PM (U11/V) 517

Most revolvers feature replaceable grips or grip panels, allowing a nearly endless variety of aftermarket options. For example, I have the classic, wooden "Banana Grip" on my Taurus 85 Total Titanium. Does the same job as the Charter Arms grip, providing room for the pinkie finger. But, being smoothly finished wood, they don't snag on clothing. And the shape of 'em is damn near perfect, they're great at moderating recoil in the bargain. Finally, they look great, too! Hello Weasel and all other gun thread posters. Only two gun related items this week. Yesterday I loaded up some 300 Blackout with some 150gr and 125gr bullets. I had some previous data with the 150s while the 125s are new so decided to see how they’ll work out.
Today I just finished filling one of the Protektor rear bags I bought on Weasel’s recommendation. I bought one of the AR bags which will probably get the most use and one of their BB rear bags. If I had to do it again, I would probably buy them pre-filled as it is an exercise in patience filling them with the little fill tabs they give you. Last thought, I had a buddy who bought a Lew Horton Special .41 Magnum custom 3", and that goddam gun was absolutely the most ridiculous cannon I've ever had the misfortune to shoot. I vaguely recall it had fingergrip rosewood stocks, and it was like having both your palms being hit by an MLB star hitter with a baseball bat.
The blast, with 296 handoads, which he had to compress and crimp as they would otherwise push the bullets up out of the casings, were absurd. It was the size of a garbage can. Posted by: LenNeal at July 24, 2022 09:36 PM (U11/V) 561

Yes, you take an adrenaline dump, your heart is racing, fight or flight, and all that, trembling hands, even. But events like this, I suspect, force upon you a level of clarity and focus like you would not believe. That may have helped him. Sent this to my state legislators this afternoon:
Proposal: Add a None of The Above option to ballots Goal: Allow people to clearly state that none of the candidates represent their views In many elections, I find that none of the candidates are people I want in office. Currently, this means that I have to either vote for the lesser evil, but still vote for evil, or vote for no one. I find both options distasteful, because it doesn't tell the powers that nominate candidates that they have failed. My proposal has two parts. First, if None of the Above wins the most votes, then a new election is required for that office. None of the initial slate of candidates for that office, nor any loser from any other election on that ballot, is allowed as a candidate for the new election. Second, any candidate for an office where None of the Above wins cannot run for an elected office for four (4) years, nor be appointed to a state or lower-level office for the same period of time. I am also open to extending this restriction to any candidate who gets fewer votes than None of the Above. Posted by: Hour of the Wolf at July 24, 2022 09:39 PM (oGiDo) 566
Part 2:
Possible Issues 1) Presidential elections could get interesting. If None of the Above wins, it could create some interesting dynamics. If (my state) elects "None of the Above", it would certainly break any belief in a landslide victory. 2) It would create greater accountability of incumbents to the voters. Even if they run unopposed, they can still lose the election and office if they vote against the interests of their electorate. 3) For a time, there would likely be more elections as bad candidates and elected officials lose to None of the Above. For Lloyd- do you use moon clips with the ACP, and did the pistol come with them?

Should homeboy have carried a gun in that mall? Perhaps not. But he did. And he was a few dozen yards out when shit got kinetic. Not optimal. He did what he could, and it worked.

A suppressor brings a 160db bang down to 130db. A kitten landing on a pillow, just like the movies.

That's pretty much the entire reason I have my 9mm PCC as a home defense weapon. It rings steel plates out to 100 yards, but it's headshot accurate - and I'd confidently take the shot - out to 40. But the biggest reason is having 30 HST rounds I can put in a pot-pie sized group anywhere in the house from any distance at any time, with another magazine clipped beside the first and ready to switch. Posted by: Mor I agree with that, however, I would think having "a gun" that is a bit more jack of all trades as a go to would be better. If you were just doing room clearing yes, but if you have to go outside then it is a hard fit. Posted by: confederatefifth at July 24, 2022 10:01 PM (wCKaf) 588

If you were just doing room clearing yes, but if you have to go outside then it is a hard fit. Posted by: confederatefifth * Sure, if I could only have one gun. For my environment inside our home and with our kids and their perculiarities, the PCC *is* the jack of all trades, though. If I go to walmart I've got the carry pistol and the PCC in the backpack in the car. Like I always tell my friends, I only use my pistol to get to my long guns. Just how "quiet" are sound-suppressed weapons?
Posted by: Ciampino - Is it PSST or psst? at July 24, 2022 09:52 PM (qfLjt) I have one .45 can that I got adapters to fit various rifles and pistols. Two of the rifles are almost "movie quiet", subsonic .300aac and subsonic 5.7x28. My Beretta Model 70 .22lr pistol is movie quiet with subsonic ammo. Literally just a *pssf* noise. Snapping your fingers is louder. It would be good for a mob assassin. Posted by: G'rump928(c) at July 24, 2022 10:05 PM (Iaj3u) 594
FWIW, I'm not chasing anyone outside. If they can successfully bleed out outside, that's great. I won't be following after I've stopped the threat.

Even if the shot itself is nearly completely silent, the impact of the bullet on the target will make noise. As I understand it (from the lips of a SOF veteran), the point isn't that the suppressed weapon is completely/nearly silent. It's that the noise the suppressed weapon makes gets lost in the noise of the battlefield environment. For example, if the M240B or M2HB opens up on the bad guys, someone flanking around w/ a suppressed weapon will be very hard, if not impossible, to pick up amid the noise the MG's make. Even when a suppressor only lowers the decibels to hearing safe, it attenuates the muzzle blast so that it just sounds like a noise, like someone dropping a hammer on their deck. Not sharp like an unsuppressed shot.
Suppressors really are the bee's knees. I wish they were not an NFA item. I know my hearing would be a lot better had I used one all my life. Posted by: G'rump928(c) at July 24, 2022 10:13 PM (Iaj3u) 599

No range report. I intend to order from CMP a USGI 1911 model A1 Colt .45 pistol tomorrow. I entered into a lottery about six months ago to try to win the right to buy a surplus pistol. I assumed that my lottery number was too high and that by now they had all been sold. Last week they called me to tell me I could buy either a Service Grade at $1050 or a Rack Grade for $850. I have bought several M1 Garands and 1903 Springfield from CMP. I have never owned or fired a 1911. Tell me all about this model of gun. Has anyone else bought a 1911 A1 .45 ACP from CMP?
