40 I got nothin'. Per the cursory web search, this is "Domḗnikos Theotokópoulos" - also known as El Greco. It is much clearer in Latin letters

Here's the funny thing. This comment had the artist's name quoted with Greek letters and the comment got rejected as spam with:
Your message has been rejected because long strings of unbroken text are very annoying. Use the space bar or tinyurl.com as appropriate.

My bet is that it's being expanded to Unicode notation when posted and so appeared to be probably 50+ characters long, triggering the spam filter. This bug would only effect foreign alphabet letters or letters with diacritics, and thus the bug - and by extension the blog - is obviously dangerously jingoist.

Thanks for the link, Andy. I'm betting the figure in armor (see, I spelled it the right way ) is Greco's self-portrait. A common device in sacred judgement works - see Buonnartti's flensed face in the "Last Judgement" on the wall of the Sistine Chapel.

228 Chef Boyardee was founded by Italian immigrant Hector Boiardi in Milton, Pennsylvania, U.S., in 1928. Can anyone tell me why Italians would buy spaghetti in a can?

It’s an interesting story actually. He had a popular restaurant and people frequently asked for his sauces and what not to use at home. He went on to develop a take home “Dinner for Two” dish that was extremely successful. And more profitable. So he sidelined the restaurant biz and ramped up mass production. He changed the spelling of his name because he wanted people to pronounce it correctly. Then WW II hit and he turned his factory to produce food for the troops. Eventually he sold to Big Food Company.

Unvoiced "th" is the sound produced in the English words "think" or "thistle." No larynx required.

Not a diphtong.

RedState is correct that the letter Delta is pronounced in Greek as a "th" sound similar to "those" (tongue at roof of mouth) and Theta is pronounced as the "th" in "these" (tongue between teeth). But when you tell an English speaker the name Dimos (for example) is with the Delta "th" sound they don't get the distinction. To me, English speakers pronouncing it similar to Dino (Di-mos) sounds closer than pronouncing it THe-mos.

As I said it is difficult to explain and not worth making the English speaker frustrated.

291 The Econo-myth used to be my favorite publication. Now's it's just another zit on the butt of the financial world.

I don't think the point was to replace The Economist....it was actually to kill it. This is the blessing of the billionaires: they'll destroy stuff that they don't even care about, one way or another. It's just about exercising power. They've forgotten that we have guns.

Also (roller) coasters and IPA. And some say there's no God.

Posted by: LASue

Sorry didn't mean to ignore your question.

The Greek letter Delta is not pronounced with the English "D" sound in Greek. It is a "th" sound, but different from the "th" sound used for the Greek letter Theta.

It is "thelta" (tongue at roof of mouth); and "theta" (tongue between teeth). That is the best way I can explain it without "speaking" it for you.

But trust me, I've tried. I can clearly hear the difference but most English speakers cannot. And, honestly, I don't think it is a huge deal, which is why I went with "De-me-ni-kos" to explain how to pronounce Δομήνικος

A couple of friends invited us over for lunch a few months back, and were showing off their security system (I think it was from SimpliSafe) since they had been alerted to our walking up the driveway.

They showed us their myriad of camera videos on their phones (including us sitting there in their living room chatting), and that it was all being recorded "in the cloud" so they could have remote access if not home or traveling.

Needless to say, we were pretty creeped-out about having our entire visit recorded for future access by Bob from the Ministry of Truth (formerly NSA).
