In news stories today, I think the one that made me smile the most was AOC's demand that Congress take Jurisdiction over Abortion cases away from the SCOTUS. Now, ignoring all the practical and legal problems with doing that - how could she not know that the ONLY reason the Feds ever had any say in abortion was BECAUSE of the SCOTUS? They've returned the authority to the States; and if you do something like take away their jurisdiction over abortion, all you do is guarantee that the Dobbs decisions stands for good.

Unlike most of the "green" fantasy power sources, geothermal works, and works well. It's only currently economic where the hot rocks are close to the surface, though. If this guy can really bring down the cost of deep bore holes, it might amount to something.

AlaBAMA there may be temporary considerations too. Japan surprisingly has had a particularly idiotic epidemic policy, such that you probably couldn't get in at all until recently (as a gaijin with no connection). And they just dropped their absurd "quarantine" procedures - which weren't enforced and were a joke anyway.
However all of this has meant that for now Japan's principal tourist attractions, which for some time have simply been swamped by numbers (Chinese), are probably pretty good. I'm assuming you'd want to go to Kyoto, for example. Last time I was there it was almost a wash-out, it was so crowded - and it wasn't even summer. So if you're talking now/soon, check into that. There might be a "window" of good visiting time for Japan when the place isn't swamped with Chinese tourists. Posted by: rhomboid at July 15, 2022 11:44 PM (OTzUX) 313

Speaking of Ethiopia, one of the best trips ever was to Eritrea. Some time ago, not long after the longest war of the 20th century (Eritrean independence war) had ended. Amazing place. Camel markets in the north, western US-like vistas in the south, Ottoman coral-block towns down on the Red Sea, capital is like a small Italian city from the 30s (for a reason). Good Italian (and "national") food anywhere you go, spectacular espresso and pastries for pennies.
Probably cleaned up a bit by now, but will never forget the advisory in the tourist pamphlet given out by the embassy in DC - "camping cannot be recommended due to the abundance of land mines". Did have to mind my less militarily literate friends to stay on the road at certain vista points on the highways (clearly long-time fighting positions), but the T-54s and BMPs rusting near the highways were safe to climb on. Extremely friendly and beautiful people. Had many fun conversations with Eritrean-Americans - all either LA or DC residents here of course - about things there, and here. Possibly top "vacation" ever. Posted by: rhomboid at July 16, 2022 12:10 AM (OTzUX) 364

The attorney for Dr. Caitlin Bernard, the Indianapolis obstetrician-gynecologist who provided an abortion for a 10-year-old child abuse victim, has sent a cease-and-desist letter on Dr. Bernard’s behalf to Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita Friday afternoon. “I think that he has caused a great deal of public anger at this one individual. And so I think that a defamation suit might be possible,” says Jody Madeira, a Law professor at IU. “Until the Indiana legislature acts, abortion is legal — up to 20 weeks in the state. And so, she was well under that limit at six weeks and three days. And so, there are no disciplinary actions that can be taken against her at that time. Being an abortion provider in Indiana is not a crime.” “There was no HIPAA violation, because just saying that someone is 10 years old, is not, while it’s health data, that it is not identifying information,” explains Madeira. At near-mantle depths, rock is plastic, and the hole will simply close in. How do you prevent that? 3. If you do extract heat from the hole, the rock around the hole becomes chilled, and eventually you have a steep thermal gradient between the hole itself, and the rock it is in. I expect pulling heat from the mantle wouldn't have much effect on the crust. The amount of heat humanity could use is a small percentage of what is produced. Maybe tectonics would slow by a tiny amount.

Hey Horde, Just arriving, but I scrolled upthread a bit. I took a one week trip to Italy in high school. I had a wonderful time and I actually preferred getting out of Rome and heading down to Pompeii for a day trip. The chaperones for the trip were woefully underprepared for 60 high school kids who just wanted to get drunk at the hotel at night.

I wonder how quickly heat transfers in the mantle, or just above the mantle.
For that matter, I wonder where the water in the Yellowstone geysers comes from, and if the flow of fresh water at all cools the magma chamber underneath it It would have to be some inflow of fresh water since that boiling water sprayed out should be losing a lot by evaporation. My cousin got back to me about the flash drought thing. He said, nope, that's not a term too familiar around these parts, but he said an event in '86 or '87 here, was getting into the flash drought regime. Not a full-on one, but it was getting there. I remember that drought and others since. He said that event seemed to kick of a long period of drought years, and the water table has not yet fully recovered on average from that yet. It's coming back up, but still hasn't made it all the way back. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at July 16, 2022 01:55 AM (Mzdiz) 454

Posted by: Infidel at July 16, 2022 01:56 AM (mn1Pi) Kind of like a percolator. Ground water, or surface water trickles down through cracks and fissures, encounters hot rocks, and gets heated, and heated. Pressure of overlying water keeps it from boiling until steam pressure exceeds the hydrostatic pressure of the water. Then the hole burps. I think water seeps into the Yellowstone lava pocket boundaries, and then there is a raise in steam pressure that is contained by the pressure from the water over top of it, which is relieved by forcing water up to the surface.
I think it operates like a giant coffee percolator with that bloop, [pause to reheat incoming water to the steam explosion level and then again] bloop Without coffee grounds, but a lot of quartz and feldspar instead that is slowly being dissolved. I was just reading about geyser mechanisms. Exactly as described about. Because of the high pressure by a deep water column, the water remains liquid well beyond the normal boiling point. When the pressure gets high enough, it starts pushing the colder water in the hole out. As the rising superheated water rushed in, it flash boils to steam, reducing the back pressure and letting the superheated water chamber blow off very quickly. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at July 16, 2022 02:09 AM (Mzdiz) I think the key feature is "one way in, one way out". If your circulation system allows for cold water to flow down one channel, and hot to flow up another, you don't get a geyser, just a plain old hot spring. Yep, there a geysers in Iceland. Also Russia, Chile, and New Zealand. Some of the New Zealand geysers are being rendered dormant by geothermal plants as well. A geyser field area is a good place to put geothermal plants, of course. Interestingly, there have been some artificial geysers created, some accidentally, some on purpose. Some geothermal wells can erupt just like a geyser. Again the key is the "one way in, one way out" for water. A yuge long running coal mine fire in Pennsylvania also created a type of artificial geyser. The heat is from the burning coal. In Iceland, they make use of the hot water and steam from geysers to heat homes, and do greenhouse agriculture. Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at July 16, 2022 02:34 AM (Mzdiz) 484
