Now, ignoring all the practical and legal problems with doing that - how could she not know that the ONLY reason the Feds ever had any say in abortion was BECAUSE of the SCOTUS? They've returned the authority to the States; and if you do something like take away their jurisdiction over abortion, all you do is guarantee that the Dobbs decisions stands for good.

I grew up there - in the summer you have friends who have pools, and you hang out in their pools every afternoon and evening. You don't really want to own one yourself, too much work. Fun factoid - in the upper end neighborhoods, close to 50% of Phoenix/Scottsdale houses have pools.

One of my favorite pools is in one of the big resort hotels, covers a couple acres and in the middle is an island with a cave you can only reach by swimming to it, and inside is a kick ass bar.

https://tinyurl.com/2p8u84j9

The advantage here is that you could drill right next to an existing coal plant and basically just switch the pipes over.

Unlike most of the "green" fantasy power sources, geothermal works, and works well. It's only currently economic where the hot rocks are close to the surface, though. If this guy can really bring down the cost of deep bore holes, it might amount to something.

@Rodrigo, my understanding is that the biggest issue with geothermal is corrosion of the steam pipes due to salinity, pressure, and minerals in the water. Great in theory, but awfully hard to execute in practice.

There are tab programs out there and there are huge tab data bases. Sometimes the tabs are written above actual written music. If you can actually read music it might be an option to search tab data bases for the song you want to learn. You might find the actual music.

With this place, the recipe is family made. they make two batches, hot, and mild. they will mix the two depending on how you order. I like spice, but I always get the half. It's a wonderful sauce, kind of creamy (I expect they use refried beans or something). I buy jars of it.

The also make chimichangas with egg roll wrappers. Good Lord, that's good stuff.

Kroger - Many big gaps on the shelves. Mine had the entire bagged salad and prepped fruits section emptied like there was a cooler problem or it was going to be deep cleaned tonight. Plant butter sticks have finally returned but with a huge price increase to $6/lb. A couple of tinned meats that had been on long-term specials that are ending this week are completely gone.

And people are leaving their buggies in the parking spaces next to their cars. Not even walking the buggy back from 2 or 3 spaces away from around the corner on the side of the building. Society is crumbling away.

Japan surprisingly has had a particularly idiotic epidemic policy, such that you probably couldn't get in at all until recently (as a gaijin with no connection). However all of this has meant that for now Japan's principal tourist attractions, which for some time have simply been swamped by numbers (Chinese), are probably pretty good. I'm assuming you'd want to go to Kyoto, for example. Last time I was there it was almost a wash-out, it was so crowded - and it wasn't even summer.

So if you're talking now/soon, check into that. There might be a "window" of good visiting time for Japan when the place isn't swamped with Chinese tourists.

Many oldsters were there today, especially the ones in wheelchairs, walkers, arms in slings, slow shuffling walk, winded just standing up, etc.

Weekday lunch price up to $12 and weekday dinner / weekend price at $15. These were $9 and $12.00 pre-Biden, respectively.

363 Speaking of Ethiopia, one of the best trips ever was to Eritrea. Some time ago, not long after the longest war of the 20th century (Eritrean independence war) had ended. Amazing place. Camel markets in the north, western US-like vistas in the south, Ottoman coral-block towns down on the Red Sea, capital is like a small Italian city from the 30s (for a reason). Good Italian (and "national") food anywhere you go, spectacular espresso and pastries for pennies.

Probably cleaned up a bit by now, but will never forget the advisory in the tourist pamphlet given out by the embassy in DC - "camping cannot be recommended due to the abundance of land mines". Did have to mind my less militarily literate friends to stay on the road at certain vista points on the highways (clearly long-time fighting positions), but the T-54s and BMPs rusting near the highways were safe to climb on.

Extremely friendly and beautiful people. Had many fun conversations with Eritrean-Americans - all either LA or DC residents here of course - about things there, and here. Possibly top "vacation" ever.

It was shocking how good their english is. Not sure how much english they speak in japan or greece. Then you got the food. I have been to places where if you didn't like the native shit you are fuuuucked. I don't even know what they eat in japan, but I'm damn sure its probably shit I won't like, not a rice and fish eye guy. Same with greece, not sure what to expect. In italy even if I say hell no to seafood the pasta falls from the sky over there, and pizza, and bread, and a fuck ton of other good shit that has nothing to do with seafood. Greece is tempting though, I would love to see the ancient stuff, and I have already been to italy. Do they got McDonalds in greece? Lol

Saw a video of Tblisi recently and barely recognized it - spent a lot of time in that region, but 20 years ago. Azerbaijan, northern part in the low Caucasus range is very pretty, Baku is an interesting city. Whole Caucasus area is worth a visit for those who like something off-beat. The attorney for Dr. Caitlin Bernard, the Indianapolis obstetrician-gynecologist who provided an abortion for a 10-year-old child abuse victim, has sent a cease-and-desist letter on Dr. Bernard’s behalf to Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita Friday afternoon.

“I think that he has caused a great deal of public anger at this one individual. And so I think that a defamation suit might be possible,” says Jody Madeira, a Law professor at IU. “Until the Indiana legislature acts, abortion is legal — up to 20 weeks in the state. And so, she was well under that limit at six weeks and three days. And so, there are no disciplinary actions that can be taken against her at that time. Being an abortion provider in Indiana is not a crime.”

“There was no HIPAA violation, because just saying that someone is 10 years old, is not, while it’s health data, that it is not identifying information,” explains Madeira.

Questions:

1. So you vaporize the rock. How do you get the vapor, or dust, as it will quickly recondense into dust, out of the hole?

2. At near-mantle depths, rock is plastic, and the hole will simply close in. How do you prevent that?

3. If you do extract heat from the hole, the rock around the hole becomes chilled, and eventually you have a steep thermal gradient between the hole itself, and the rock it is in. Rock is poor conductor of heat.

422 > 1. So you vaporize the rock. How do you get the vapor, or dust, as it will quickly recondense into dust, out of the hole?
DOE has the same question. They say they'll be testing their idea for that (which may be proprietary) with their "100-1 hole" pilot.
>2. At near-mantle depths, rock is plastic, and the hole will simply close in. How do you prevent that?
They're not drilling that far, only down to where the temperature reaches 500 C. Magma is more like 700-1400 C
> 3. If you do extract heat from the hole, the rock around the hole becomes chilled
Unknown how they're solving this. Fracking?
I wish them well with it, but yeah, it's a research project.

Kind of like a percolator. Ground water, or surface water trickles down through cracks and fissures, encounters hot rocks, and gets heated, and heated. Pressure of overlying water keeps it from boiling until steam pressure exceeds the hydrostatic pressure of the water. Then the hole burps.

Posted by: Debby Doberman Schultz at July 16, 2022 02:02 AM (a4EWo)

462 I think water seeps into the Yellowstone lava pocket boundaries, and then there is a raise in steam pressure that is contained by the pressure from the water over top of it, which is relieved by forcing water up to the surface.
I think it operates like a giant coffee percolator with that bloop, [pause to reheat incoming water to the steam explosion level and then again] bloop

Without coffee grounds, but a lot of quartz and feldspar instead that is slowly being dissolved.

I was just reading about geyser mechanisms. Exactly as described about.

Because of the high pressure by a deep water column, the water remains liquid well beyond the normal boiling point. When the pressure gets high enough, it starts pushing the colder water in the hole out. As the rising superheated water rushed in, it flash boils to steam, reducing the back pressure and letting the superheated water chamber blow off very quickly.

I think the key feature is "one way in, one way out". If your circulation system allows for cold water to flow down one channel, and hot to flow up another, you don't get a geyser, just a plain old hot spring.

Black smokers are underwater thermal springs, with a high metal content. I have seen and handled encrustations from black smokers. Yep, there a geysers in Iceland. Also Russia, Chile, and New Zealand.

Some of the New Zealand geysers are being rendered dormant by geothermal plants as well. A geyser field area is a good place to put geothermal plants, of course.

Interestingly, there have been some artificial geysers created, some accidentally, some on purpose. Some geothermal wells can erupt just like a geyser. Again the key is the "one way in, one way out" for water.

A yuge long running coal mine fire in Pennsylvania also created a type of artificial geyser. The heat is from the burning coal.

In Iceland, they make use of the hot water and steam from geysers to heat homes, and do greenhouse agriculture.

498 In Italy you can cross the Rubicon and utter the famous phrase alea iacta est ('the die is cast') as per Julius Caesar. The river is also known as Fiumicino and the Rome International Airport (Leonardo da Vinci) is there.

I had a blast there. The reality of being there hit me right in the face when I stepped out of the hotel in Rome for a smoke and the ancient wall of the city was staring me right in the face, complete with some ancient bust of some ancient big wig. It was literally across the narrow street I was on. I could have pissed on it.

The story goes that the hoes on River Road in Durban tried to avoid the Japanese sailors.
(River Road is the red light district and also the road with the biggest potholes. I drove my 9-month pregnant wife over it trying to speed things up but it didn't work).

graffito (plural: graffiti) = writing that's scratched onto a surface

ostrakon (plural: ostraka) = broken piece of pottery that's repurposed to scratch a name onto, to use like a ballot
