Boris Johnson Announces Resignation, But Is Trying to Cling On to Power Until October While Everyone Else Wants Him Out Now

Screenshot (2487).png

He's still trying to stay on until October, even though he's announced his resignation at some point in the future.

But angry members of his own party are demanding he leave now.

Both the left and right are preparing a "pincer" movement, voting no confidence from both wings, to force him out immediately.

Johnson wants to remain caretaker PM until a new one can be found -- while almost everyone else wants someone else to be caretaker PM until a new, permanent one can be found.

So this isn't quite over. Johnson has been fired, but there is still sharp disagreement about when his firing will take effect.

A FURIOUS campaign to stop Boris Johnson limping on in Downing Street for another three months was thundering tonight.

As the PM assembled his "zombie Cabinet" in No10, a pincer movement of angry Tories and Labour was plotting to prize him out.

Critics demanded Mr Johnson resign immediately and make way for a caretaker PM like Dominic Raab rather than wait until October.

In his resignation speech this afternoon the PM vowed to stick around while a new Tory leader was elected before the party's autumn conference.

Top Tories lashed him for hopelessly clinging on and ramped up efforts to get him out as soon as possible.

Senior MP Sir Bob Neill said: "We should look to have this result not by October, I think, we should do it in the summer. Nowadays most people are on email, we can do it quite easily."

Former Minister George Freeman who resigned this morning said "his authority is gone".

He said: "Fifty ministers have resigned, and I think we're going to have to, in the next few days, select somebody. It's not beyond the wit of man."

I think what Johnson is really plotting is that his Fake Resignation will cause people to cool off on forcing him out, and then he'll have a few months to repair his reputation, and then he can take back his Fake Resignation and just be PM again.

And I think everyone sees through this and is saying "Nah, brah. I think you should leave now."

its a series of events

he had a number of social gatherings at his home, parties with a hundred or so people when everyone else was supposed to be in lock down.

his wife, he was schtupping before marriage while she was a govt employee, got a lot of promotions undeserved, and apparently he recently hired some dude who was a sex pest for some fancy govt job, and lied about not knowing he was a sex pest when he hired him.

Its an op.

Posted by: nods head at July 07, 2022 01:33 PM (FgS0M)

107 Yes, he's trying to stay on until the Conservative Party votes on a new Party leader but I understand that usually a P.M. ousted by a Party revolt resigns and someone not running for the leadership is named the interim 'caretaker' P.M.

A ton [tonne?] of current and former Party bigwigs like Major and May are urging him to resign immediately; Labour says they'll try to force a Nonconfidence Vote in the House of Commons [that could theoretically lead to a real General Election but not likely] if he doesn't resign immediately. I also see that the Party does have a Deputy P.M. position so maybe he'd be invited by the Queen to be the interim P.M.?

The BBC figures the process will take until September; I don't know when the current sitting of the House of Commons is shutting down for the Summer Recess.

||It's now up to the 1922 Committee of backbenchers to decide the timetable for electing a new Conservative Party leader.

My sources say there is likely to be a meeting on Monday, where the executive of the committee will decide on rules and timetable.

Tory MPs will whittle the number of candidates down to two. I'm told that’s likely before the summer recess.

The final two -- assuming they both want to run -- would then spend summer fighting for the leadership.

The expectation is a new leader will be in place by September. But I should emphasise -- some Tory MPs want Boris Johnson out much quicker.||

224 ||Johnson confirmed that he would step down as party leader on Thursday 7 July. His premiership began three years ago with the ousting of Theresa May in a coup he and Michael Gove instigated.

Johnson won an 80-seat majority at a snap general election in December 2019, but just months later was in hospital fighting for his life against Covid-19.

It was only in the autumn of 2021 that revelations about partying inside No 10 during Covid-19 lockdown came to light.

After that, scandal after scandal fell at the PM's door. The latest allegation -- that he pretended not to know about Pincher's history of sexual assault allegations when he promoted him to deputy chief whip in February -- led to a remarkable climbdown and admission he "forgot" about it.

That was enough for Tory MPs who had backed him in a June confidence vote to now turn against him. Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid quit, before the cards swiftly tumbled down behind them.

On Thursday, Johnson spoke to the chairman of the Conservative 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, to inform him of his decision.||

334 They say that the Royal Family is the symbol of the united Kingdom.

I am inclined to agree. The UK is this strange mix of people with no real purpose or direction in life. They parade around bearing titles and extraordinary history, but have no real value today. They contribute little. Eventually, many of them leave the UK for America (the Beatles, Prince Harry, David Beckham, etc. etc.) where they can find more opportunities.

The other day, someone asked me why I don't travel to England (I will go to Scotland thought), I tell them because London is boring and lifeless. There is nothing there anymore. All the musical talent is in the USA and the West End is nothing but a Freak Show.

Nope. The Queen is Head of State only, and has nothing to do with political leadership at all. Zilch.

If anything, the reverse is more true, though probalby not likely, insofar as the Parliament can end the royal family participation in Brit government at any time.

I would hold France apart from that (higher than the rest of Europe). They have a space program, their medical research is very impressive, they still have a global military impact (nuclear, submarines, global presence in the "Outre Mer" territories, the Charles DeGaulle Carrier in the Mediterranean) cultural impact in films and music, and political influence (people still care about elections and issues in France). 452 Asked Bing. From the comments at the Guardian:

"The Norman French phrase 'lieutenant' may have predated the Latin rendering 'locum tenens'. The earliest examples in OED are all from Scotland, and it seems even then that the "Lefftenant" pronunciation was being used (Barbour's "Bruce" has "luftenand" in the mid 14th century). Moreoever an Old French rending of lieu was "luef". The British pronunciation was still used in the USA in 1793 but had almost died out except in military circles by 1893. One could explain this the influence of non-British immigrants applying standard French pronunciation to a word with apparently obvious French origins."

520 Aluminium is at least legit.

Otherwise we would have calcum, potassum, and even sodum which would be easily confused with the VP.
Posted by: ... at July 07, 2022 02:10 PM (qJu7E)

This is not correct.

The names of metals came from the name of the ore, with the ending changed and a -um added. Turns out most of the ores ended with an i, so the final three letters tended to be ium. For example, calcite -> calcium.

The ore for aluminum is alumina. drop the a, and a um and you get the correct spelling. The Brits added the I some generations later just to be jerks about it.

Our propaganda organs cannot conceive that someone they loathe has popular support, hence the "strongman" theme and implication Putin clings to power only by murder and mayhem. Putin's hardly a nice guy but he tends to have pretty strong and widespread support in Russia because he lifted the country out of poverty and away from the same WEF trash that threatens us.

Contrast Putin with the corrupt and ignorant buffoons the Western "press" likes: Liz Truss, any Euro feminist leader, Barack Obama, HRC, and so forth. All despised by large segments of their population but loved by the media.

Pauline Kaels, the whole lot.

_____________

This ban is stupid, and wrong. But too bad the Supreme Court couldn't have just said that and instead sent it back to the Virginia state legislature to fix if they so chose to do so.

I understand the desire to fix things that come my way. But the Supreme Court disobeyed the law by 'fixing' it. Firmly putting the onus on where it belongs would have legal and the right thing to do in the long run.

It's still around, but less and less every day. It'll be gone soon.

The German language is flattening, but much, much more slowly than English - we eliminated most of the casing by shortly after Shakespearean times. Most of it still hangs on in German. But it's slowly going away there, too. Very slowly.
