Things have changes since I was stationed there in the early 90s. I recall lots of bitters, ales, ciders, and various lagers (didn't see Bud). Bud was found on American bases though.

Cases have appeared at the rehab hospital where Dad has lived for several months. He tested positive, but he has shown no symptoms. This means I can't visit him until I get the word from my sister, who lives in the area.

I'm one of those rare individuals that's mostly immune to colds and flu. Haven't had one in over two decades, despite all of my coworkers having COVID at least once...
So I just ignore it. I have health issues, to be sure, but colds and flu don't seem to be among them.

Cases have appeared at the rehab hospital where Dad has lived for several months. He tested positive, but he has shown no symptoms. This means I can't visit him until I get the word from my sister, who lives in the area.
I'm not really worried about Dad, just enough to mention it on the thread.

I'm not immune to them by any means (though I don't actually get sick that often); I just won't give them the satisfaction of adding me to their statistics. It does help, of course, that none of the places I have worked the past two years have made my employment contingent on Covid tests. If pressed, I would probably (very unhappily) submit to that, though the vaxx was and is a dealbreaker; but otherwise, nothing doing.

Because I give blood regularly, they did a Covid test on my blood that I didn't even know they would, and that was when I found out that towards the end of last year, I got Covid and got over it and never even noticed having it. So now I test positive for all the antibodies.
(I do recall having a slight fever for two nights at about that time, so I guess that was it)

We just got in from our little fireworks display. The highlight was the John Deere Tractors (bright, loud, and they move!). Bottle rockets this year were kinda duds. There's a new firework: a take-out coffee cup. It was a good amount of shooting star thingies.Our finale was a Let's Go Brandon "cake." Lady at the fireworks store said they were the best-seller this year. Go figure.
Anyway, it is 500g, 30 shots. Couldn't find an online photo, alas. About 11x11 cube. Great fun!

Well, just as I figured, Miley went crazy over pickled okra. We got a jar at the store tonight, and she loved it. We got a jar of "Talk 'a' Texas" brand. It claimed it was hot, but 'twarn't in the least.
I also got a jar of some chow-chow for the folks -- Daddy will appreciate that. Miley, however, was not that enthusiastic about the chow-chow. I might see if she'd like some of the really hot kind.

Back in 1974 I stopped at a place off the highway in Texas that advertised a 72 ounce steak. If you could then eat it with one baked potato and a small bread roll then it was on the house. The waitresses had menus in hip holsters. Anyone know of it? I don't remember the road but we were coming from CA and via the Grand Canyon. I think we went north then into OK, MO (St. Louis), probably passed close to where I am now in IL, on our way back to Cambridge MA.
We had a regular 16 oz steak and fries and it was good. Had a boardwalk outside front.

Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors is the only one I've read. The author (James Hornfischer) died, an untimely thing as he wasn't very old, last year or the year before.
I recall one regular HQ commenter from TX years back who'd read the book, emailed Hornfischer (who lived somewhere in TX), the author responded, and they had lunch.
I've never looked to see if there were any Japanese accounts of the battle. Not even sure the primary materials exist on that side, which is shameful, as by now I should know. Some contact with the JMSDF, though of course not the equivalent of their historical section (if they have one?).

Re collard greens: Couple of neighbors of mine, senior and junior. They were big gardeners. Sonny got in his head he wanted to grow collard greens one time. Senior was disapproving. He told Sonny he wasn't going to tolerate them.
Junior went ahead and planted some. Senior said nothing for a while. One day Sonny came home from work, and found all his collards had been yanked up by the roots and destroyed.

Navy chow is good because if it wasn’t there would be a mutiny. The Army is pretty much middle of the road, and as usual, the Marines do their own thing.
I don’t know about stockades. The worst golf course I played was at Little Creek. Even then I blasted the course but gave them credit for attending to other issues.

He got enough of that after a while. So he took an empty bottle, pissed in it, and left that under the seat. He came out to get back in his car, and the next thing he knows, he's coming to on the ground with a very sore head, and covered in his own piss.
The likker thief, upon realizing his punch had been spiked so to speak, laid in wait for Ol' Red. He hit him over the heat with the bottle, then poured the contents on his face.

From what I'm seeing of the "axe to grind" etymology, it is taken to mean "grievance", as in "I've got an axe to grind with him.", but that it originally meant "hidden agenda".
The Ben Franklin story involved young Ben being tricked into doing a lot of work to grind a brand new axe for this fellow. He flattered young Ben and his family, and tricked Ben into doing the work for him.
And then there are some claims of other, different origins, but involve trickery of axe grinding.

Three years old. The only legal way that those should have been jabbed is under clinical trials. But Pfizer's kiddie trials don't include but one serious AE report that they attribute to the vaccine.
One of those includes a 2 month old. Who went into cardiac arrest less than 2 hours after receiving the dose.

I slept a bit later and am here with Stirling the black kitten draped across my arm. He's clearly hungry, though he has plenty of dry food overnight. I need to buy him some more chow today.
My only plan is to exercise, have breakfast, and do that shopping.
