Is This Something?
Added: Is The Terminal List Something?

Did you see It Follows?

So this is It Smiles.

Oh, to clarify: It's not called It Smiles; it's just "Smile." I was making a joke because it's similar to It Follows. It Follows made the simple, mundane act of walking horrific; this makes the simple, everyday act of smiling horrific.

Here's something scary I found: A scene from a Japanese movie called Kairo (also called Pulse), which came out early in the era of the Internet, when it was generally accepted that The Internet Can Do Anything.

I think the film's premise was that there was some kind of secret room on the internet. Maybe a connection to the underworld where evil ghosts live. A guy found it and was then found dead under suspicious, maybe supernatural, circumstances.

His friend drives to the guy's crime scene tape sealed apartment and goes inside.

I have it cued to 3:01, when he gets to the apartment. Worth the three minutes.

This might be fun:

I've been watching The Terminal List on Amazon, which is good.

The critics hate it, because they hate Chris Pratt because he believes in Jesus and that is a crime, and because the show has families in it and I think in one scene they say grace. And also it has the military and guns, so it's "anti-woke."

To complain: It's doing that thing that all Premium Quality Cable TV Shows do, which is to suggest it has Dramatic Weight by making people talk slowly and having scenes go on for longer than they need to. The show's got some unneeded flab.

But on the plus side: In every episode so far (I've watched six of eight episodes), there is at least one big moment that justifies your having spent 50 minutes watching it.

It's an action vengeance story with an interesting character twist: the main character, while a good and decent man, may have some serious mental issues, so his judgment is not very good. In the usual action vengeance fantasy, you're completely on-board with the hero's plan to just kill the bad guys.

In this one, you're not always sure he's mentally together enough to have correctly deduced who the bad guys are and you're sometimes very opposed to the extreme means he uses to exact vengeance. Like detonating a bomb on a crowded street.

Instead of always rooting for him, I'm frequently thinking, "Please don't do this." I don't want him to be just a crazy killer.

The tension there, between wanting him to succeed and wanting him to come out of this okay, but also being... worried by his behavior and shaky grasp of reality, is exciting. It keeps you interested.

This is overstating it for effect, but it's almost as if, "What if Joker was the good guy?" Or at least he's got some Travis Bickle DNA in him to go along with his John Rambo DNA. (Or, I guess: He's like Rambo for the first movie, except not just reacting, but acting proactively.)

21 I always thought the American remake of Pulse was extremely unsettling. Weird monsters living in unknown realms of bandwidth that can devour us mere humans...Only red tape seemed to be a way to stop it (probably had to do with the wavelength of red).

30 See How They Run does look good. It doesn't take itself ultra-seriously, at least in the trailer scenes. One would hope it would take the traditions of the murder mystery seriously, though, and actually have a closed mystery with a thunderbolt solution.

IMDb.com says that the writer, Mark Chappell, wrote one episode of Hustle in 2010, the series with Robert Vaughn, as well as other items I've never heard of. The trivia section says that the film is based on the Christie play The Mousetrap.

Good. Because I was wondering if it wasn't just me that liked Reece less as the plot went on.

And I think Carr is actually including remorse with the last person Reece crosses off his list.

Ever since you mentioned this, Ace, and applied it to the Westworld TV series, I've realized that this is why so much of modern TV bores me. (Or would if I wanted to pay for any of it.) Your notion that producers know that viewers will spend half the time on their phones or other devices, and will look up only occasionally to see what's going on within the show, thus the slowness, seems exactly on target.

103 When I felt like Hollyweird had completely abandoned me and was giving me the double-middle-finger in every scene of every movie....

I started cruising my streaming service for older movies for which I had fond memories. First, I started to notice that I simply could not watch ANYTHING made after 2010. Like a switch, things when from "cringy ham-fisted messageing" to "sledgehammer to the face Left-wing messaging" around that time.

The other thing I noticed was all the old action movies I used to love developed a pattern. Starting in the 80s and moving forward, most action movies featured a protagonist who was explicitly employed by the government. Cop, US Military, CIA, and FBI were the prime associations. Male action heroes who were not on a government paycheck of some kind could only be found in fantasy-adventure movies. Ash, from the Evil Dead comes to mind.

So, now when I see Hollyweird commercials to worship men who live off my tax dollars, I just move on from those, as well, because that's part of the subtle programming that's been going on for generations.

You can trust the government, because of all those angelic men who cash checks from it.

Good. Because I was wondering if it wasn't just me that liked Reece less as the plot went on.

137 I am kind of two minds on this show. I have only seen the first couple of episodes. I HATE the modern fascination with labyrinthine plots. I also have come to hate the 'plot twist' that 'changes everything'.

This show starts in on the rat fuck so quickly, that it never establishes the trust you need (that 'sense of normalcy') that builds credit with the audience that you are not going to fuck them in the ass right off the bat.

In short, I am kind of iffy on this one so far. Pratt and Kitsch seem to be doing a good job. Plus, the plot twist/motivation at the end of the first episode really fucking pissed me off. The only worse thing they could have done was the rape thing. There are some things I hate as plot devises, Josey Wales not withstanding. Note: I do not watch OJW when I am in a good mood and looking to just have something entertaining- I watch Rio Bravo.

The movie is a dog's breakfast wherein it's starts out as a kind of 1960s Batman TV show version of Thor. Thor is a big beefy blowhard idiot who causes more problems than he solves.
I suppose they handle the Lady Thor dealio about as well as they could given Marvel's New Universal Plot Point wherein the big name hero becomes a kind of sidekick in his own movie.
Then stronk grrrrrl section gets mixed up with a big Kidz Rock! movie section.
Then they try to end it all by asking us to take Big Dumb Thor seriously as a romantic hero who ultimately becomes a Sitcom Dad.
And, of course, Disney is still committed to grooming your kids with extraneous sucker punch teh ghey scenes throughout.
No there isn't a teh ghey Thor / Peter Quill scene as some have reported.
It had one truly great joke, which i'll remember. Otherwise, a forgettable mess. Avoid.

192 Saw the "Get Back" series about the Beatles
I have mind thoughts.

1)The break-up of the Beatles was due to 2.5 things
a)The constant presence of Yoko broke up the established way P&J wrote songs together. Paul complains at one point that they used to lock themselves in a hotel and emerge with songs after a week or so. This turned the sessions into endless boring rehashing of same few songs.
b) George Harrison's passive/agressive dickishness. Even when he gets his way, he's unhappy and a drag mostly. He wants to do his own thing, but wants the others to give him permission(or kick him out???)
c) McCartney gets tired of riding herd on the others. Except for Ringo, no one's ready to go but him. No one's bringing much to the table but him.
2) McCartney is a musical genius. But, he can be wrong in his suggestions sometimes for the others' music. And even goes down the protest path for "Get Back" until he figures it out.
3) John is more charming than McCartney(!) and tries to jolly things along. Often pays old r&r tunes they all love to try to get some comradely feeling going.
Interesting but not essential.

The critics do hate it because they hate Chris Pratt but I also think they hate it because it isn't woke.
It isn't actively anti-woke by any means (besides all the "toxic" masculinity, of course) but there is no boss who converted to Islam just so there could be a scene where a "bigot" French guy can complain about whole areas of Paris becoming "no go" zones so the Muslim boss can take out his tasbih (Muslim prayer beads) to tell said bigot he was praying to Allah to keep his cool (the exact scene I stopped watching the Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan series on Amazon, btw).

Was it an empty flatbed or lowboy? Many of them have an extra axle to lower the weight per tire for their heavy loads but they can lift them when not needed to save on the rolling friction and gain a bit of mileage.

This is a real "when did you stop beating your wife" kind of survey. I am asked to agree whether or not county executives support communication on racial nonsense (which I am sure they do), not whether I think that's a good idea or not. There are few sensible questions (do you think 'equity' trash is important, and do you know what 'equity' trash is). Most of the questions *must* be answered from the position that the 'equity' trash is the right thing to do. "I know how to advance racial equity in my current position" is not a valid response question because it presupposes that my answer to question #1 (do you think it's important) was "strongly agree."

This survey can get only a few valid responses to questions, because most of the questions are incompatible with any opposition position. The final tally will show huge support by definition. This was written by an unskilled amateur who acknowledges but does not accept that someone, somewhere, might disagree.

there's a game called Balderdash like that, which you can play at home just with a dictionary. The Caller looks up a hard word and writes down a definition, using casual english (that is, not using the dictionary's highly technical definition). Then he tells everyone the word. Then everyone writes down their own made up definiton (or the real one, if they know it).

259
Once that's done, the caller reads out the definitions and everyone chooses which one he thinks is the real one. You get one point for everyone *besides you* who picks your fake definition as a real one. You get one point for choosing the real definition and another point for having written the real definition yourself.

It's a lot of fun. People can get pretty inventive trying to come up with fake definitions that sound semi-plausible. People also get stuck in patterns that make their fakery identifiable as theirs: Like one guy I used to play with would always go with a variation of "a type of 18th century schooner."

I think that because of Covid and other scheduling/strategic issues, he basically freed up the principals so they could move on and get other work, and with that it became an "indefinitely" sort of situation.

The good thing about the BTK timeline though, is they could get the whole team back together in 10 years with 10 years of real-time aging on them and still be right where they need to be, still looking in all the wrong corners.

282 Also TV suffers from what I long ago dubbed Gilligan's Island Syndrome. Also to a lesser extent Wile E. Coyote Syndrome. And what most people would probably call Lost Syndrome.

Where the setup and main story for the show has a rule that can't be broken or the point of the show is utterly destroyed. In other words, the characters can never get off the Island. Or the chaser can never catch the chased.

Excellent writers can and do handle this situation well, and it's impressive when done correctly, but mediocre writers, which is 98% of TV, put themselves in this corner and then stay stuck there. Beyond a season or at most three, it makes for a frustrating and eventually very boring and pointless watch.

316 I have a suggestion -- I just finished watching The Vow on HBOMax.

It's a documentary about the creepy NXIVM sex cult that a lot of rich white liberal women got caught up in.

Pretty interesting if you're curious how people get involved in these kinds of things. Semi-spoiler: the main guy sold them on how being in NXIVM made them super-ethical and enlightened beings who were make the world a better place. He knew his targets.

The media really did not pay attention to this story as it was happening. One or two articles here or there but basically ignored.

It is funny how when 2 of the top level people first left and went to the FBI they were told they couldn't do anything because the women were over 18 and consented to being "slaves" and being branded. Then, once Trump takes office, his DOJ does prosecute and these libtards can't put 2 and 2 together. They think it is solely the media campaign former tv-star Catherine Oxenburg went on (her daughter was in the cult, had been branded and was refusing to leave it) that caused the DOJ to prosecute.

S1 is 9 episodes and ends with cult leaders arrests. S2 will cover trials (starts in October).

TNT made a series of that movie, but Noah Wylie (the Librarian in the movie) was only a recurring character. The series focused on 3 new librarians The Library recruits plus Rebecca Romijn as the "Guardian." Each librarian has areas of expertise and they all work together to solve whatever end of the world crisis that occurs each episode plus an overarching season crisis. It is called The Librarians (with an "s") and it is also a good light adventure/fantasy comedy. Ran 4 seasons and is streaming on Amazon Prime, IIRC.

They steal people's life essence like the guy in your clip and they eventually die and turn into ashes.

There's an American remake, Pulse (2006): https://tinyurl.com/2p9em397 that gets the idea across a bit more clearly though I prefer the Japanese one.

362 My son and I saw the Smile teaser before The Northman. We laughed.
I like crazy Japanese stuff as much as the next person. The girl coming out of the well and jerk walking and then out of the TV scared the snot out of me. They made fun of this in Cabin in the Woods.
The history blogger Dan Carlin said the Japanese are like everybody else, but even more so. And that's probably true. We're still getting creeped out by their ghosts partially because we are sort of used to rules of our ghosts. They have to keep changing the rules to make out ghosts seem more deadly. Essentially turning them into demons.
I bet Smile won't work.

Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at July 11, 2022 06:10 PM (Y+l9t)

365 I thought the Terminal List was pretty good. I feel like I've seen the story before, and I think most of the tension Ace describes is resolved by the 2nd episode (probably to the show's detriment, imho). The mental instability that lent itself to an unreliable narrator aspect that had a lot of potential interest was too quickly resolved in the main character's favor. I think if they could have left the question of whether we could trust his memory open for longer it would have added something. Maybe they couldn't realistically keep that up though. Anyway, the moral tension does pretty much remain, but the mental one kind of fizzles out even though they keep up with the fragmented flashbacks throughout. The final "twist" was a bit predictable, but it didn't quite work for me, and felt a little tacked on. Still, I thought it was overall quite good and enjoyable
