Weekend Hobby, Crafting and Bodging Thread

Greetings all and happy Independence Day weekend. If BBQs and fireworks aren't your bag, then let's head to the basement, garage, workshop, studio or wherever it is you can make a mess, get creative and lose yourself for a few hours.

Let's start off with a relaxing watercolor demo. My dad was an accomplished painter and studied under one of the most renown watercolorists, Edgar Whitney, for many years. He'd have liked this one.

For those into jewelry making, here's a demo on making a bracelet out of copper wire.

Between the quality of today's kits as well as after-market parts, 3D printing and laser cutting, there's almost nothing you can't make and make look really good. But look what this guy did with a flattened PVC pipe, minimal tools and wicked skills.

Here's a good tutorial for making a basic mug out of coils of clay.

Woodcarving is one of those primal pastimes that have been around probably for thousands of years. Doesn't require a lot of expensive tools; just practice, patience and learning to work with the wood.

I've showcased this Estonian furniture restorer before. Here he tackles a really abused art deco coffee table. Who knew that dried PVA (Elmer's) glue was that good a contact cement?

The talented Dave Meek returns with a tutorial about how to put your ideas for a model railroad layout down on paper as a complete track plan.

Finally, the guys from Flite Test cap off a series on building a 20-foot span B-!7 with an amazing paint job (and some good painting tips/hacks). The next episode is supposed to feature in-flight video and laser tag gear for simulated combat.

Well, last week I finished the grill table by sanding, staining, and sealing it. This weekend, I'm putting up shelves (seriously!) and throwing out trash. I am finally able to refinance which has inspired me to clean my house.

I'm also working on my HF antenna. I need to bit the bullet and just wind the wire around the pipe, but that sounds too much like work, so I've been putting it off.

15 My troop painting tends to grind to a halt in spring, picked back up late fall.
I have longhorn steers coming and in 3 weeks should get wagons for the oxen, so painting might start when they all get here. Hoping the scale is correct of the cattle.

Today sra blaster and I installed a sewing machine in a sewing table for her. She loves sewing and knitting and all sorts of crafts and sometimes we get nice things and sometimes we get stuff that is...bodged. But it's all made with love.

32 Marine Rehab Status Update: My cockpit cushions finally arrived Friday after a nine-week supply chain-induced delay.

$1100 worth of custom cushions that fit perfectly but Mrs. Cicero is dubious. They're too hard and they'll be too hot in the sun, she says. I think they're clean and perfect for the sometimes very wet application.

The canvas is next. $4000 seems to be the consensus on replacing the dodger and the bimini. I would have this in the works already but the local canvas houses are all forecasting a 9-12 week turnaround. I'll check back this week to see if things have improved before I place the order.

Deck paint is the next priority. I haven't decided whether to DIY or hire someone. But once the canvas and deck paint are behind me, the boat will be a little gem.

The journey from derelict to living breathing vessel has been fun so far and the results ate really rewarding.

53 I never liked watercolor - but I did mess with it some.

Instead of the smear method which is shown here, try this:

Tape the watercolor paper down to the board first, then wet it completely. Let it dry. Take a pencil, which is the only time you'll use a pencil when painting, and draw the outline of everything on the paper - the scene, buildings, people, trees, whatever. Then, start with darks and shadows first and move progressively to lighter colors until the lightest of the lights are needed. It will still look like shit, but it will look better than if you just started smearing wet colors onto a piece of paper.

I have no experience with Flex Seal other than those Phi Swift commercials. But I'd think that putting it, or epoxy or whatever, on the outside of the tank would make more sense. Otherwise you'd have to remove the tank, drain it, put the sealant on the crack, let it dry, and reassemble.

Trying to get the first chapter of my new Theda Bara book going. Working title is Ten Thousand Midnights. It takes place in 1922 and Bara gets involved in the mysterious murder of director William Desmond Taylor.

I have the thing sketched out in my head, but the actual writing is proving to be a bitch.

94 A case of one hobby helping with another. I'm a bit OCD about keeping my guns cleaned, especially the black powder firearms. I'm fixing up an old hand drill, the eggbeater style, and many of the cleaners and lubes used for the guns are just what is needed for some hand tools. Heavy rust is another matter (soak the piece in white vinegar as a start) but for basic maintenance, gun solvent, oil, and a silicone grease will do a good job on the drill.

We used murphy's oil soap and water 50/50 mix to clean BP guns when we used to do civil war reenacting. Hot scalding water with murphy's and it was done in double quick time. Plus the murphy's left an oily residue when it all dried to retard rust.

Mine is vented at top, any water vapor turns to steam and goes out the top hatch. Granted it doesn't make as much smoke as a wood fired smoker does, but you can still taste the smoke from it. People can't tell the difference in my summer sausage if I do it on the wood smoker or the propane smoker.

We need drivers at work. Good, reliable, responsible types are increasingly hard to find. We've had bad luck with recent hires.. things like vans not cleaned-out (customer trash, food wrappers, etc.,) bad driver habits such as careless parking, radios left on "loud", A/C systems left on full-blast (we train 'em to leave EVERY thing in the van set to "off", every time), slovenly work appearance, etc.

When we hire in the semi-retired, strongly responsible work history category, we get hires without these traits. We need more such drivers. 'Cause I need to be able to take time off to come help Ben Had "Paint Barn", and serve Pintos with Bacon to as many as would turn out to help.

It's all to do with performance. One really modern engine can get an airplane to an airport. Note that the routes they fly are all via Alaska or thereabouts, across the Aleutians, etc., always near land in case of a PAN-PAN or MAYDAY. It used to be a commercial 2-engined plane was not allowed across the Atlantic.
The size difference between, say, an original 737 engine and the latest is enormous. Huge fans and most of the thrust now comes from the bypass air rather than from the jet part.

Also, those High-Bypass Fanjets are many times more efficient with fuel than their previous-generation "normal" fanjets. And forget about the old 737-100's turbojets, those things were thirsty! Oh, and incredibly loud, too.

Those economies translate into "range", and that's also how they manage to qualify for 2 engine ETOPS certifications. The twinjets are economizing the Airbus A-380 and Boeing 747 out of the vast majority of passenger routes, worldwide.

747s will remain dominant in cargo for decades yet, but the A-380 never really presented a specialized cargo airframe as did Boeing. Four engines work with cargo. Not only because "weight", but because cargo flies without all the costs of ticketing, feeding, luggage systems and "etc." of passenger routes.

And now, off to drive a four-wheeled passenger route.. home sometime deep into the ONT!

177 114 I know this is blasphemy to some but - on my propane vertical smoker, I added a thermocoupler valve from a modern day masterbuilt. I ordered the parts for it online then put it between the gas supply and the burners' controls on the existing smoker. Now I can set a temp on the thermocoupler and it'll keep it steady for the enter 24 hour cook of a brisket.

No criticism here. Brisket and ribs are so incredibly fiddly that I'm amazed that people can do it over charcoal or wood.

My hat is off to anyone who can do it, but the engineer in me says that the excessive demands of these meats for temperature stability cries out for automation.

For all of its superlatives and advanced tech, the A380 is essentially done as a viable commercial airliner. The B777 and B787 (and ironically, its stablemate the A330) are eating its lunch, offering similar range with lower seat-mile cost.

Well, then he should also apologize for playing a soldier in Saving Peivate Ryan and an astronaut in Apollo 13 as he was never a soldier ;pologize for Woody in Toy Story as he isn't a cowboy; apologize for Turner and Hooch as he was never a cop; and apologize for Dragnet, because Dragnet.

Late to the party (movie thread is up, but I don't movie), but usually WW tanks are made of polyethylene plastic, to which practically no glue will bond.

Best bet? Put a hot iron to it. Seriously. Weld the crack with a hot iron. Soldering gun or iron will work; you could use a big nail heated by a torch, too. If you have a hot glue gun, the hot glue is itself polyethylene, and can be fed into the crack as filler where needed. You are actually doing plastic welding.
