A Music Thread: It's Saturday Night!

And time for a leisurely stroll through the chaotic music taste of your host.

One of the advantages of being almost 29 is that I am completely detached from popular music, and whatever I finally get around to hearing has been filtered by time and my curmudgeonly attitude toward the music industry. I am reflexive in my hatred of new, popular music, which is sort of childish because I don't listen to any of it.

Anyway...less chatter and more music.

Vampire Weekend's "Unbelievers" is sort of tough to categorize. Poppy, but it has something extra. Anyone care to take a stab at it? I have been assured by the internet that the band is far too "white" to play this sort of music (African influenced...whatever the fvck that means). Something about cultural appropriation, which is a perfectly reasonable point if Africa would just stop using automobiles, modern medicine, cellular phones, etc.

Prince seems to be quite polarizing, and I am not particularly enamored of junkies who kill themselves, but Little Red Corvette is a fun song, and one that I enjoy occasionally. Plus, he had lovely taste in women (remember apollonnia?).

I like covers when they respect the original song but add something. Supertramp's original of this song is good, but I like Give a Little Bit by The Goo Goo Dolls even better.

This is just fun. The Georgia Satellites have a great sound, and Keep Your Hands To Yourself is a great example of it!

Oops! I swear...I'm not cultured! Haydn's Trumpet Concerto conducted by John Williamson and the Boston Pops is too frenetic and poppy, but damn! Wynton Marsalis can play the trumpet!

I never got the hype that swirled around Nirvana. They have a few good songs, but I wonder whether they would have faded into relative obscurity had Kurt Kobain not been a narcissistic ass who cared not a bit about his family.

This is one of the good songs, and sort of a neat video.

Lately I've been digging on Japanese Jazz/Funk from early-mid 70s. One showed up in my YouTube suggestions (probably because I watched a short doc on Jaco Pastorius) and, you know how it is, once you listen to one record YouTubes keeps suggesting more.

I'm watching Handel's oratorio Saul on YouTube. They've opened it up such that it's almost an opera. The performers are decked out in 18th century clothing. I like it but I am concerned about what I may be seeing. The relationship between David and Johnathan is approaching fabulous. I doubt they change the libretto but it seems to me there is excessive hand holding. (I'm only about 45 minutes into the 3 hour work.)

74 I came across some videos the Doobie Brothers (yeah, They are still out there) did as isolation videos during Covid shutdowns and some of their newer appearances. I wasn't a huge fan but liked some of their songs, especially "Black Water". These grandpas still have their voices and I think the instrumentals have improved. Made for some nice listening.

80 Nirvana is the sensation that they are primarily because Grunge was what destroyed spandex and hairspray party rock from the 80s. Teen Spirit was the breakthrough for the entire scene.

Unless you lived through the transition, you will have a hard time grasping just what a shockwave it wad from glam and glitter to dirt and grit.

I was more of a Herb Alpert guy, than Al Hirt.

Doc Severinsen was the Pops conductor for the Buffalo Philharmonic during the 90's.

98 32 I commented on the last post that I got goosebumps from the Tabernacle Choir singing God Bless America ( a moron was in the choir) . I was thinking of other songs that have done that besides patriotic songs ( I admit I often get choked up when comes to patriotic songs) .

105 Saw Blue Oyster Cult at the Alameda County Fair last Thursday. Pleasant outdoor amphitheatre, very good sound system, great performance though no deep cuts, unless you count Extraterrestrial Intelligence as a deep cut (which I don't). The 2 new songs sounded good.

Kiss for a very short period bridged the gap between sabbath and RUSH for me. I Heard the sabbath paranoid album when I was young, namely the song Iron man, and that turned me on to aggressive guitar tones, and not the lame shit my father used for amps (he played too). Once I heard that I was hooked, but then Kiss was something different that I could learn other stuff from. Then...then I heard the RUSH 2112 album and I found a serious teacher in Alex lifeson, which got me in great shape for when metal really started gaining a foothold in the very late 70's. The shit I learned from him I use to this day.

I agree. I like Bon Scott-era AC/DC, some of their best tunes, but it was Johnson's voice that made them the post-70's juggernaut they became. "Back in Black" would not have become the colossus it is with Bon. He simply didn't have the voice for what they were becoming.

The very first band I was ever in was an AC/DC and early judas priest cover band. That was when bon scott died. The singer we had did a killer bon scott, but he could not sing Brian Johnson to save his life, as we found when back in black came out. One observation here- When back in black came out it was a very crucial time in metal. Priest had released British Steel, Iron maiden released Iron maiden, sabbath had released Heaven and hell, and there were a few other pivotal albums at that time. The next band I was in was playing all of it right then and there in the metal clubs. Brian johnson probably came in just at the right time, because in my bones I feel AC/DC would not have ridden that wave without him at that distinct moment in time.

302 There has been some wonderful music made in the last 10 or 20 years but none of it in pop culture. It's the niche markets that shine. Suzy Bogguss did an album of American folk songs. There are several blue grass groups, often families, like The Petersens. Peter Hollens has created some wonderful acapella pieces. There's been more use of period correct instruments and arrangements in Baroque and earlier styles of music.

Besides YT and similar, I'm not aware of any other way to bring the music to peoples' attention. I can't imagine a radio station exists that would play it or some version of MTV. But they garner millions of fans over time. There is some hope.

Crazy shooter guy was in the military. Had some friends that were big into heavy metal. I *think* he may have gotten kicked out of the service due to escalating mental issues (could be wrong about this part). Anyway, crazy guy and friends are big into Pantera. Crazy guy even starts writing lyrics to songs "inspired" by Pantera.

Crazy guy then starts writing notebooks of lyrics "inspired" by Pantera and showing his buds. Problem: all the lyrics were verbatim lyrics from actual Pantera songs. So there was a big identity/reality red flag starting.

Mom wonders what to do with her troubled son, thinking he needs a hobby. What to buy for him that he can "get into". How about a gun?

I remember reading an article back in the 80s or so discussing how the label that made Springstein a star had a choice to push him or Tom Waits, and they chose Bruce.

In another timeline Tom Waits had the full backing of that record label and is the level of rock star that Bruce Springstein is in ours.

421 It feels weird when YouTube recommends a new band to you....and you actually enjoy it. A month ago they gave me some videos by 'Fellowship,' a metal band that films videos in a forest or off in some valley....But they're a happy band, and they're not above turning their videos into a bit of a joke. Still, I've become quite fond of their song "Glint." Anyways, their first full album actually drops in the next week or so.

And after watching the Fellowship videos, I was lead to some videos by cover band 'Lords of the Trident' who film metal videos in their back yard, or in the park, or in the random open spaces surrounding suburbia...Deliberately silly, but with a good lead singer. And through them I discovered "Carry the Flame" by 'Unleash the Archers.' Not fond of everything UtA does, but "Carry the Flame" was awesome! An upbeat male-and-female duet that just hits all the right notes....

He couldn't break away from them, and had continual pain issues. He won't be the first or last to get hooked on them - Rush did and many athletes have. But the pills got him all the way.

I've heard the same story. What I don't get is why this causes restrictions by the GOVT on physicians that are prescribing pain killers as innocuous as Tramadol.

I've taken it on and off for about 20 yrs, before and between a hip replacement and 2 back surgeries. Never been addicted to it, never got high off it, it somewhat blunts the pain.

Those that have problems w/ other drugs, like Prince or Michael Jackson, have created an environment where those needing even minor pain relief are denied meds, because the govt scares the docs.

426 There's still a lot of great new music out there, but you have to go look for it. I'm pushing 60 so I'm not supposed to like this stuff. My current obsession is a band named "Wolf Alice". They do everything from rock to punk to ballads, slow, fast, soft, hard...they're just a great all-around band. It doesn't hurt that singer Ellie Rowsell is very easy on the eyes. They've won big awards and played big shows (Glastonbury last month), but they never seem to get very big. Give 'em a listen. "Giant Peach" is probably my favorite song from them.

Great new music is out there, but it's not played on the radio and handed to us like it used to be.

427 Ace, I have 40 years on you and saw many great artists perform at their peak. I’ll never think of Prince as a junkie after having hip replacement surgery as the agony of pain from degrading hips was what drove him to pain killers. I was shocked at the time when David Lee Roth “Jump” had the surgery in his early forties. On stage, the greatest artists give it their all. Amazed today that Mick Jagger can move like Jagger.
