Dell has replaced the old New Inspiron 16 Plus, which I rather like, with a new New Inspiron 16 Plus which is also mostly good and sort of much cheaper.

The new model swaps the 11800H CPU for a 12700H - 20% faster on single-threaded tasks and 30% faster multi-threaded. It only has six full size cores (down from eight) but also has eight half-size cores, for a convincing win overall.

The 3072x1920 16" screen is still there, as are the Nvidia RTX 3060 graphics on the high-end model. RAM is now DDR5, but be careful - except on the high-end model, half the RAM on this new version is soldered in place and can't be upgraded.

The list price in Australia seems to be about the same as the old model when it was 40% off. Since I got both of mine at 40% off I'm not mad about that, but I wonder if the new model will also get discounted. It will be a bargain if it does.

The only other change is that the numeric keypad has bitten the dust.
The Ryzen 5800X3D is a mixed bag. (AnandTech)

This is the 8-core 5800X with a jetpack strapped to it in the form of an extra 64MB of L3 cache. This reduces the thermal efficiency of the cooler so it is clocked slightly lower than the regular version.

The results depend on whether you need fast memory access, fast cores, or lots of cores to win a particular benchmark. It's the fastest CPU around for Dwarf Fortress for small and medium worlds, but lags behind for large worlds.

Playing Factorio it is up to 60% faster than Intel's i9-12900K, a massive difference. But on many tests the extra cache doesn't help at all, and it's competing against chips with 16 or 20 cores, so those results aren't pretty.

Instead of adding even more ports - called progress - we regress. The hardware for a USB port is chickenfeed in cost. So charge me $5 or %10 extra for another port.

No problemo. Just buy a dongle that will accept multiple USB and other attachments and then remember where you left it the last time you used it and remember to pack it for a trip.

20 Still on the USB ports. The old one has two on one side so that if I need to connect an older external drive that needs more power, I can use both USB ports to deliver.
The new one has each port on each side so I can't use those dual-USB headed cables for this as it won't stretch across. Bummer. Moron designers. Should have both ports on one side or have 3 ports.

Still having trouble with my 2014-ish MacBook Air. I swapped out the cord I bought about 10 days ago, which the computer was not recognizing, for another. It worked long enough to charge the computer to 100% at my office, and for a little 'Net browsing that evening. Then the little light stopped showing and the computer no longer recognizes that this new cord and charger is attached.

I'll bring the cord and computer back to the store. But is there anything they should be looking at on the computer? There are no "low battery" or other warnings.

Mine is a late 2014. The battery option in the preferences is telling me "the capacity is significantly reduced"

Meaning, time to get a new one.

When my wife died in early 2021 I didn't cut my hair for more than a year as she was my barber. Eventually my older daughter took a stab at it. I had not gone that long without cutting my hair since my time in Cambridge MA in the 1970s.

Anyway, figured I might as well review Exodus 21 verses 21 to 25, and do a little study over coffee. (It's never a bad time to do that sort of thing.)

It's simple, and clear. Two men fight, one is the husband of a woman who is pregnant. The fight hurts/injures the woman. She gives birth as a result. Child lives: Husband can demand penalties of the other man in the fight (probably property or money.) Penalties limited by Judge's say (if demand challenged.) Child dies: Other man's life is forfeit and from my reading of it, that's a "you shall" (you as in society, shall as in must) put that guy to death as part of the law of equal revenge.

If anything, this would encourage men to be very careful about getting into conflict with a man who had a pregnant wife, which is pretty much what you'd expect in a society that values childrens' lives and families in general.

Arguing that this set of verses justifies abortion? That would just be madness.

202 The new one has each port on each side so I can't use those dual-USB headed cables for this as it won't stretch across. Bummer. Moron designers. Should have both ports on one side or have 3 ports.

Those were only needed on very early computers because when they were designed, nobody had thought of using USB ports to power things so the power available through a single port was limited. Nowadays, people expect to power things through USB ports, so you don't need to double up on the power. Heck, the computers I used to work on had a limit of like 20 amps through each USB port.
