The Saturday Night Jokes

Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently, and there was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu.

A Bird Pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to everyone’s relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu. The cause of death appeared to be vehicular impacts. However, during the detailed analysis it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird’s beaks and claws.
By analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2% were killed by an impact with a car.

MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of truck kills versus car kills.
He very quickly concluded the cause: When crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow in a nearby tree to warn of impending danger.
They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout “Cah”, not a single one could shout “Truck.” H/T Isophorone Blog

Did you hear the one about the guy with no hands that got the town’s bell tower ringer job and would ring the bell with his head…one day unfortunately he was ringing the bell, got caught off-guard and the bell knocked him over and he fell to his death. Passers-by in the town gathered around at the unfortunate scene and someone asked if anyone knew his name…the town cryer spoke up and said, “I can’t remember his name but his face sure rings a bell.”

So, some weeks later, in memory of his lost sibling, his younger brother honorably accepts the job to proudly ring the town’s bell like his brother before him. Well, it wasn’t many days later then when the young man fell victim to the same terrible fate as his brother. In a most unfortunate play of events, while admirably ringing the bells, the rope caught his foot, threw him off balance and well, sadly he fell out of balcony of the tower and like his brother, died instantly. Once again, passers-by gathered in bewilderment around the lifeless soul. Again someone asked, did anyone know his name? “No!…” cried one of the town’s people, “…but he’s a dead ringer for his brother!”

I have heard that flying is safer than driving a car. But if my car's engine stops I can pull over to the side of the road. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Kevin Mayes, pilot of a single-engine Cessna, was on his way to Sacramento from Seattle, WA when he suffered catastrophic engine failure at 9,000 feet. Luckily, he was close to an airfield at Hillsboro, OR. Kevin managed to glide to the airport, spiral down to the runway, and make a textbook non-powered landing, all while seeming to barely break a sweat.

Dogs eat homework. And snakes eat pants. Genius Award Winner.

A woman found naked from the waist down told Pennsylvania police that snakes had eaten her pants, according to a court filing.

Responding last Thursday afternoon to multiple 911 calls about a half-dressed woman walking in the middle of a road about 25 miles from Philadelphia, cops found Gloria Harpel, 35, “naked from the waist down and she was rambling.”

Oh I bet she was rambling.

Interesting, there was a major storm near DaughterH which took out a LOT of big trees and consequently a lot of power lines.

Suddenly, people realized that if the grid is not reliable, the local gas station may not have operable pumps so your house generator may run out of fuel and for a while.

saw Ciampino's post - to add, in the Pre-Cambrian and Cambrian period, atmospheric oxygen levels may have been double what they are today. Insects have a passive respiration system, so the amount of oxygen in the air is the limiting factor on their size. There are fossils of very early dragonfly's that were the size of seagulls.

It's looking like not too many. Looks like the Democrats have told their local AntiFa and FemiNazi commanders to keep a tight rein on their troops this time. They do not want to rile-up the law abiding Deplorables more than they already are due to inflation and baby formula shortages. Not this close to the mid-terms. Idiot Joe publicly repeated the message in his anti-SCOTUS screed Friday, on national TV, just in case the lower-level thug commanders didn't read the emails.

It is once again amazing how easily the Dems can switch on/off the burning and pillaging tactics of their battalions, based on political calculations.

Similar machinery just did Broadway, three lanes each way, right through the middle of Galveston. And, such machines are even now under the floodlights, tearing up old lanes in the I-45 expansion project, which will run from the Bayou Vista neighborhood just North of Galveston, about 20 odd miles North to League City, where it'll connect with an already expanded I-45. 5 lanes either side, wide shoulders and reverse-flow HOV lane in the middle. Progress, and about another 4 years of endless roadwork to make it happen.

Same problem with 7 layer dip but its issue is there's so much going on you're just gonna grab a fork and go to town eventually. To be considered a dip for me I imagine:

I'm charging a line of infantry on my trusty steed. On the way I reach into a saddle bag and pull out a bowl of dip and a chip. I plunge the chip in then raise it with my hand swinging it around in a mighty show of aggression. The front line starts to break in fear and i shove the chip into my mouth enjoying all the dip that was still firmly adhered to the chip.

This is the way it should be.

Dinos, especially the giant sauropods, got big because they were pneumatic, that is, they had air sacs through the bones, pleural and body cavities, and the rest of the body to differing extents.
Like birds they had hollow bones, and under pressure the tissues would stiffen with the gas pressure, as well as be lighter than solid bones.

this tendency may have contributed as well to the rise of birds.

Im able to cook, bake and heat water with propane for myself and two wimmin on a grill tank for 11 or 12 days. 800 gallon fill on a 1000 gallon tank will JUST last one year after an extreme winter.(propane forced air furnace), august or september is when we usually fill up as propane prices are historically lower then. Im pretty certain we can power furnace , 2 fridges, one freezer, well pump and a couple lights 6 - 8 hours a day for 2 days plus our cooking on a grill tank. (But plan on sourcing a pair of 100 gallon tanks gor the genset) in the winter i get 2 or 3 days out of a grill tank running the furnace, water heater and cooking.

270 A few notes from some light research today...

Trump isn't going to be indicted. The Democrats (wrongly) think they can beat him. They are very worried about DeSantis and taking Trump out makes DeSantis the nominee in 24.

Trump is inching closer to over 50% in the popular vote. It doesn't matter if Biden can get within 3 or 4 points of Trump. Once the 50% threshold is reached, then Trump wins under all scenarios.

As bad as Biden is, he is, by far, the best candidate the Democrats have for 2024. Susquehanna started looking at this and Trump beats everyone else in the Dem field at 1984 level margins.

2024 is shaping up to be the "I Told You So" election. Every prediction Trump made during the campaign about Biden has come true.

Looking like Republicans will pickup at least 50 House seats and 3-4 Senate seats. MAGA candidates will increase in the Senate by 6 or 7 depending on what happens in Alaska. While not pick ups, MO, NC, and OH will slip out of GOPe control.

272 Dinos, especially the giant sauropods, got big because they were pneumatic, that is, they had air sacs through the bones, pleural and body cavities, and the rest of the body to differing extents.
Like birds they had hollow bones, and under pressure the tissues would stiffen with the gas pressure, as well as be lighter than solid bones.

this tendency may have contributed as well to the rise of birds.
Posted by: Kindltot at June 25, 2022 11:37 PM (xhaym)

I saw a museum exhibit on the Sauropods that was very eye opening, based on the fact that biologists realized that the necks of the large sauropods were far too long for them to have had a simple 2 step breathe in, breathe out respiration process like we do. They concluded that they had a complex 3 step respiration system which included air storage sacks, with the effect that they were able to move fresh air into their lungs whenever they breathed in OR out.

Biologically, they were very sophisticated creatures.

I don't believe so, from my one minute troll indicates that some ancestral, non crown group crocs indicate a degree of pneumaticity, current crocs don't

"The presence of apparent osteological correlates of postcranial pneumaticity is here reported in some non-crown-group archosaurs, and some of the fossil taxa more closely related to crocodilians than to birds. This suggests that the last common ancestor of birds and crocodilians might have had a pneumatized postcranium, and that the absence of this feature in crocodilians might be derived."

Mexican americans as a subgroup are also moving toward Trump, as of today Trump would win Nevada without difficulty.

Currently McMasters in AZ, Walker in GA, and Laxalt in NV are almost certain to win. Flipping NH is possible but the hardest of the 4 potential flips. Holding PA is pretty likely right now, the Dem candidate there is deeply flawed. PA is the only real possibility for a Dem pickup this year.

The Greens leader removed the Australian flag before a press conference on Wednesday, claiming the national flag ‘represented lingering pain for “First Nations” people.’

Thorpe’s oppressor/oppressed cognitive distortion culminated in The Greens senator stating:

“The Australian flag does not represent me or my people. It represents the colonisation of these lands, and it has no permission to be here, there’s been no consent, there’s been no treaty, so that flag does not represent me.”

Well. We still live in the most amazing country the world has ever known. You can still figure out a way to make it work and be a good person and raise your kids right. We can still go to Mass or Church or Temple. We can still buy groceries and go to farmers market. We can still own land.

I don't get being a defeatist.

Live your life. Love your loved ones. Scale down and micro focus if you have to.

It is, considering those lost in the process, but I think God's purpose in the destruction is that it will motivate others to repent. 366 I'm not Berserker, but for San Diego and a novice OR experienced rider, the perfect commute bike would be a Honda Africa 1100 V Twin, with the automatic transmission.

I've ridden one, and that transmission is INSANE. Smoother than silk, likely smoother than most of your four-wheelers. Lets 'im concentrate on the road and riding, and not the bike and shifting.

Plus, as BERSERKER himself has said in recent past, most beginners buy too small, and then weeks into their riding, soon realize that they need a bigger bike. Bigger bike has better equipment, suspension, brakes, and ability to accelerate and merge with aggressive, Southern CA traffic. https://tinyurl.com/59t23dx2

Well, there is so much about this situation I don't know. Is the commute going to be in the traffic from hell? That might dictate some stuff. I only know harleys, and I don't know how much used ones are in your neck of the woods, but around here they are almost giving them away. Most bikes really, because there is just so many. A few examples. I picked up a springer softail 2 years ago for $4200, low millage and really nice. I just missed a street glide for 4K, and last month one of my customers was selling a 100th anniversary 1200 sportster that I had done a lot of work to for $1800. 6 months ago I just missed a fatboy for $3500 and it was really clean. Not sure how it is by you, but around here you can get into a nice used well kept bike fairly cheap. If...If I was going to go harley I would get something in the softail line, because a 10 mile commute is nothing, the bike isn't huge but big enough to be nice on the highway and local riding. 383 The thing with harley, its not so much the year, but the era and the millage. I work on a lot of the from the 90's that still look like they just came off the dealer floor. A lot of dudes who are old farts now are selling them. The key thing is they got them when they were in their 40's or 50's, they had the money to have them professionally serviced, they were fanatical about how they kept them, and now are in their 60's, 70's or 80's and are getting rid of them. I would be all over a good used harley, but thats what I know. There are some nice jap cruiser bikes out there too, cool factor is lower, but many are water cooled, so commute traffic isn't that much of an issue, and they are reliable and smooth. Again, what is he leaning towards? harley? jap bike? No clue?

We searched for several hours, knocked on people's doors or approached anyone outside to see if they had seen the dog. We got a few leads, but none of them worked out. The mom was completely going out of her mind by the time we left, but we had done all we could.

If it was L.A. traffic on the 405, I'd suggest he get a Rokon TrailBreaker. 2wd motorcycle, with hubs that can be filled with water for extra traction.

Don't ride *around* the traffic. Goat Climb OVER the traffic, while it's at 0.5 mph on the "freeway".

Kidding aside. Any +700cc Jap water-cooled bike is the SoCal ticket, for precisely the overheating issues you'd raised, and the entry price on used ones is negligible.

yeah one other thing, california being the land of fruits and nuts has some weird pollution gadgets on the bikes. I worked on a bike a couple years ago that had some strange shit on it. I was scratching my head thinking damn this almost looks like pollution crap, then it occurred to me that it might be the dreaded "california" model, the only different harleys in the entire frigging country. I have no clue how they even run out there in that climate. Usually they leave the factory as lean as you can get them to run, and that blows ass in hot traffic. If he is registering it in california no doubt that bike will have to have the eternal cork in it's ass.

Nurse. He won't have a choice. Base WILL require the MSF course, and all the clothes as mentioned. Or, he'll never ride the bike onto the base. Period.

He needs to know all that, going in. Good thing on any MSF course though? The fee includes the riding of the bike provided at the course. They won't let him ride his own in the Basic Course, anyway. They're teaching all the basic physics, weight/balance, and etc., all on one standardized bike/chassis. Everyone learns the same basic lesson thus, accordingly.

410 It has occurred to me that perhaps fresh off two national victories in the legal arena it is time to really press forward on term limits for the ruling elite. I think term limits should be a ballot initiative on a state by state basis. The Dems do this all the time, ever advancing, never retreating. Joe Biden is the perfect national poster boy for term limits, let us see the full extent of his corruption. Right now they are setting Hunter up to be the fall guy.

I concur on the need for term limits, a very important issue/problem now thanks to the 17th Amendment removing states' voice in the Senate.

The issue is to pass a Constitutional Amendment, one of two things must happen. One is it must go through Congress, which we both know is never going to happen because Congresscreeps would be voting themselves out of a job. The other method for amending the Constitution is a Constitutional Convention called for by 67 states (2/3 of the states). The problem is, there has never been an Amendment passed via a Constitutional Convention of the States.

A term limit Amendment will be a huge uphill battle, but it is definitely a hill on which the citizenry should die. It would require some major 'Constitution' education to get people behind it, though, and I'm not sure the current electorate has such an attention span.

437 All states at once should have ballot questions in regard to term limits. Here in the blue heartland our state legislature has called efforts to waive the state gas tax a gimmick. I am going to put a large homemade sign on the more trafficked side of my property to remind people of that. If the state would waive the gas tax, that combined with feeble Joe's call for suspension of the federal gas tax would equal about 50 cents off of a gallon. If you add ten gallons of gas to the gaping maw that is your gas tank you could save $5.00, enough to buy a quarter of a pound of pot roast these days.

If we repealed the 17th Amendment, we wouldn't necessarily need term limits. Yes, the House could still be a problem with the Pelosis of the world, but with state legislatures or governors appointing senators, it is less likely we'd have 20 or 30 year serving senators. And the point of the Constitution when it came to appointing senators was to give the states representation in Congress being, after all, we are The United States Of America. The Senate's policies/politics are now party driven, not state driven. The 17th Amendment was quite destructive when it came to bastardizing the Founders' original governing concepts/principles.

There were two original "car phone" or mobile phone systems. MTS was the first, Mobile Telephone Service, and the IMTS, or "improved MTS", which came out in '64.

These were simply two way radio systems, which tried to behave like telephones. The old MTS systems required operator assistance to make a call. IMTS added direct-dialing. The damn thing transmitted the pulse dial sequence using varying tones on the carrier. They were quite amazing for the technology level. No ICs of any sort, all logic was discrete components.

Transmitter power was 25W, and they were bandwidth hogs of course. Very limited total number of channels.

And they were quite expensive. The units themselves were usually leased for a high fee, and the air time was cost over $1 per minute, back in the '60s.

Now, they get mad at each other, Dennis is always warning the PI to stay out of police business, and threatening to take his license away.

But guess what. They are always there for each other. Dennis bails you out every time you're about to get killed. You're lying there, in a bloody mess, and the bad guy is about to deliver the coup de grace. Dennis takes him out right at the last second.

My little grandson is the official mayor of the memory care facility where my husband is interred. I have such mixed feelings about the whole thing. Anyway, I think about you always, I need to meet you at a MoMe.

Might want to get a ham radio set, too. These will be important for communication in the Burning Times.

481 I have one of the two gray kittens, that we found on our back porch, sleeping cuddled against my leg. He's afraid of the thunder but has managed to fall asleep. He likes to touch. I don't know where is his sister as they are usually together, very attached to each other.

While I hold Dean Martin is the coolest cat what has yet walked this earth, Rockfish gives him a run for his money.

Mark Steyn tells a story that as a young man, he actually went out on a date with Jim Garner's daughter. She wasn't impressed, as he tells it. He said, we a gal's Dad is Jim Rockford, that's sets a pretty high bar.

This journey we are on is not easy! And yes! one day we will get to the same MoMe

485 468, my earliest memories were talking to my dad. We were chatting to Navy ships eT Al. After you said something you had to say "over".

It took years for me to understand I was talking to him in Vietnam. It is what it is. The one advice I give anyone. Listen to those who have been through it. There is no one experience. Learn from those who where there, and decide for yourself.

You had a catalytic converter in 1975? I thought those came out much later. My '74 Mustang didn't have one.

Mid 70s is when they first started putting that pollution control shit on. Basically just killed engine performance for a while. Really, wasn't until fuel injection became a thing that they recovered.

Our '74 LTD didn't have a cat, but they had started putting some other shit on it.

Yep, looked it up, the cats were mandated starting in '75. And the first generation sucked. Well, the were constrictive, and just killed performance.

My 74 Mustang II, which I took to South Africa in 75, didn't a cat converter but did have things like a positive crank case ventilation system to burn off oil vapors in the oil pan. It worked on engine vacuum and gave me problems so it was eventually disabled with a very short piece of lab vacuum tubing with the other end plugged by a glass rod. It was still there when I left the car 20 years later with my Sister and BIL.

I remember there was a pretty good local industry of disabling and removing the pollution control shit. Cutting the cats out, disabling EGR, PCV, etc, etc. Vapor cannister shit.

Re-tuning to proper performance those engines which had been disabled by govt. mandate.

502 I heard the bagphones retained popularity in remote areas for the simple reason they were much more powerful than more modern analog cell phones, and could get a signal when other phones couldn't. Once they went completely digital cell towers, they no longer worked at all, of course.
