Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | A Music Thread: Run! It's An Ear Worm! It's time again for some stuff I listened to recently. No particular order, no particular genre, because it's mostly just random stuff from my collection, which includes an awful lot of pretty crappy stuff that I have, for reasons lost in the mists of time. And 3:00AM drunken CD buying. Or the brats buying crap in iTunes. I'm not sure about this one...I think I liked it a lot more when I was just a few years younger! But, what the hell: The Jam -- The Eton Rifles Steely Dan -- Deacon Blues is from their biggest album, "Aja," and to be honest, that's the album I think of when I think of Steely Dan, which isn't very often. But when I hear their music I am usually pleased, so that's probably a character defect that will remain unrepaired. Oh...shut up. It's fun music, and everybody knows it! KC & The Sunshine Band -- Get Down Tonight This is not music I would expect to enjoy. It's not a group I would expect to enjoy. Yet here we are! Arcade Fire -- Haiti is good for reasons I cannot articulate. The Ramones -- Blitzkrieg Bop is excellent mainstream punk rock that is just as good and fresh now as when it came out in 1976. Is it Soul? R&B? I don't really know, because in case you haven't figured it out by now, I don't know much about music, but I know what I like. And Gladys Knight & The Pips -- Midnight Train to Georgia is one of those songs. This is a video that seems to match the song pretty well. And what a fun song it is... First time I heard "Black Dog" I thought, whoa who is that black guy? Hooked ever since. Cut to 2018. Riding an almost empty downtown 6 train on a weekday morning. Doors open on 28th Street and in comes Robert Plant. Instantly recognized him and was sorely tempted to say hi but I just let him alone. He nodded then got off at Union Square. Despite the hair, I couldn't believe how old he got. Then again, look who's talking. Still, a great moment. Posted by: J.J. Sefton at June 18, 2022 07:37 PM (s2VJv) 11

I stayed up all night and listened to music, mainly symphonic metal. My younger daughter introduced me to Nightwish in the early 2000s and I liked the genre. It has minimal or no death vocals which I find mostly annoying. So I listened to an Italian group (though all in English) Lacuna Coil. Pretty good.

"Ramble On". YouTube has the acoustic guitar isolated. Take a listen to that, it is deceptively simple, kinda, but it is insane the tone and articulation he gets out of it. And fast. Almost sounds like two guitars at times, but it ain't. Then listen to people on YouTube trying to give lessons on playing that. Nobody can play it, near as I can tell. Posted by: Common Tater at June 18, 2022 07:47 PM (F0yZs) Blues guys stole from each other all the time. Music was sort considered to be a community property, and the concept of copyright ownership didn't sink in until fairly recently. If a blues guy copied another blues guy song, or his licks, it was considered to be a tribute. And the British blues scene really helped to save and revitalize the American blues scene. The old blues guys were sort of astonished that these young Brits cared about their work, and working in the idiom. And the money didn't hurt, either. ------ This was before Apple had a music store, but when I was maybe seventeen, I had a party at my apartment. One of friends at the time was what I'll term a "cokehead." Big on cocaine. 15 I stayed up all night and listened to music, mainly symphonic metal. My younger daughter introduced me to Nightwish in the early 2000s and I liked the genre. It has minimal or no death vocals which I find mostly annoying. So I listened to an Italian group (though all in English) Lacuna Coil. Pretty good.

I don't tend to get ear worms very often. I will focus on a particular artist or song. Lately I've been listening to every Rhiannon Giddens song I can find on YT. She does everything from traditional folk and blues (Wayfaring Stranger) to French bistro to Celtic (in Celtic) to jazz. Her duet with Tom Jones on "St. James Infirmary Blues" is the best I ever heard.
Other times I'll want to listen to as many versions of a song I like as I can find. "Girl From Ipanema", "If I Were a Carpenter"(tie between Bobby Darin and Johnny and June) "What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life" (nod to Sting's version), "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" all qualify. The Paul Stookey solo version of Kisses is a wonderful arrangement and masterful in how he involves the audience. Yeah, I know I'm weird. Posted by: JTB at June 18, 2022 08:55 PM (7EjX1) 258

If I am ever brave enough to try to out-drive Italians. Posted by: Miklos, noting that Hungarians are fucking lunatics on the road at June 18, 2022 09:46 PM (85b0r) ---- I couldn't drive there. Almost all cars in Europe are manual. My cousin's husband drove my late wife and I around Rome and environs in 1975. You have to remember that the engine is not important. All that matters is that you are proficient with the hooter. Everything is done with the hooter, it obviously has a language because cars made room, or didn't, sped up, braked, whatever - I never understood it. On the roundabouts, every piazza has a circle, the cars are almost touching door-handles, no kidding. Just non-stop hooting. I'm told that for complete madness go to Turkey. There the taxis, once they are in 3rd gear they will not shift down for anything, chickens, dogs, children, nope. The Jam are great. Pretty obscure stuff in WI in the early 80s. One of the first bands to be HUGE in England but was unknown here in most places. Here's some more personal faves to check out: Wax, early 90s punk pop out of California. School of Fish if you like sort of psychedelic guitar rock. The Wigs out of Milwaukee if you like power pop. Everybody knows about Big Star but my fave is the reunion concert live album from the early 90s.
