The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

Some are lawyers, which explains why they are in Congress and not raking in bucks lawyering. If I went to one of my clients and suggested, "Okay, I propose we resolve this matter by giving the other side a lot of money and getting nothing in return," I would have to find an alternate income stream too. Kurt Schlichter

Quote II

I would put it to all of you that there are more mass shooters, and they are on duty seven days a week, in places like Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, Newark, Chicago, Atlanta, Oakland than anywhere else. We just don't hear about them, because the victims -- typically people who look exactly like their killers -- are not interesting enough, and because their bodies don't have the same political impact or uses.

These are the real racists and this is The Narrative that needs to be told.Matthew Noto

Quote III

“We just want everyone to feel welcomed and included and cheer us on. No matter what your views on anything are.”Center fielder Kevin Kiermaier

A stingray can reason better than you Kevin. Just STFU.

Quote IV

“I mean, this kid was in the room for 40 minutes before anybody came in. It wouldn’t have mattered what kind of gun he had. Any kind of gun could do any amount of damage in that time.”Bill Maher

Former Mayor Pete Buttplug is a Communist quisling.

Remarkable Admission, Pete Buttigieg Announces Biden Inflation Plan is to Create Increased Dependency State and Apply Socialist Economics, Biden Led Govt to Provide Medicine, Childcare, Housing and Food

Here is one succinct interview containing the smorgasbord of far-left policies the people behind Joe Biden are proposing as the solution to the inflation crisis they have created. It is remarkable to see it all packed into one 8-minute segment. There is so much crazy in here it would take a week of articles to unpack it.

The ultra-leftist Biden Transportation Secretary, Pete Buttigieg, appears on ABC with George Stephanopoulos to discuss the solutions to the massive economic collapse that looms all around us. Within the interview Buttigieg states the Biden administration goal is to use the high cost of living (policy driven inflation) as an opportunity for the government to take over household expenses and create equity via government distribution.

The city government of Palermo, Italy did not have a stellar weekend. Or Monday as far as that goes.

The municipality of Palermo in Southern Italy suffered a cyberattack on Friday, which appears to have had a massive impact on a broad range of operations and services to both citizens and visiting tourists.

Palermo is home to about 1.3 million people, the fifth most populous city in Italy. The area is visited by another 2.3 million tourists every year.

Although local IT experts have been trying to restore the systems for the past three days, all services, public websites, and online portals remain offline.

We all know that there are at least two sets of law for American citizens. Employees at the Washington Post are finding out there are at least 2 sets of HR rules.

he Washington Post suspended reporter Dave Weigel for a month without pay Monday for recently retweeting a joke about women.

Weigel received backlash Friday after retweeting a post by YouTuber Cam Harless that said, “Every girl is bi. You just have to figure out if its polar or sexual.” The retweet received criticism from the Post’s chief spokeswoman, Kristine Coratti Kelly, who called the tweet “reprehensible and demeaning.”

“Editors have made clear to the staff that the tweet was reprehensible and demeaning language or actions like that will not be tolerated,” she said, according to CNN.

Weigel will return to the office on July 5, an out-of-office email sent to CNN said.

Now that inflation is under control, Mush Head can work on our foreign relations. Oh yeah, FJB.

Mexico City (AFP) – Mexico President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador announced Monday he would skip the regional Summit of the Americas in the United States due to Washington's failure to invite countries it views as undemocratic.

The White House confirmed that President Joe Biden would not be inviting Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua to this week's summit in Los Angeles.

"I'm not going to the summit because they are not inviting all the countries of America and I think it is necessary to change the policy that has been imposed on us for centuries: exclusion," said Lopez Obrador in his daily press conference.

Lopez Obrador said Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard would be representing Mexico in his place.

The Mexican view would have meant more if it weren't a 3rd world shithole which American manufacturers love to exploit for profit.

What happens when Congress abdicates its responsibilities? You and your small engine products suffer.

Last Friday the Biden administration raised the mandatory amount of biofuel, specifically ethanol, that must be blended within the U.S. gasoline supply. The previous amount of 10% (summer blend) was raised to a year-round 15% (waiver) by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is likely to lead to two sets of bigger issues, less food and higher gas prices.

♦ First issue. – The Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) is a government mandate, passed in 2005 and expanded in 2007, that requires growing volumes of biofuels to be blended into U.S. transportation fuels like gasoline and diesel every year. Approximately 40 percent of corn grown in the U.S. is used for ethanol. Raising the amount of ethanol required in gasoline will result in the need for more biofuel (corn). With farming costs and outputs already under pressure this could be problematic.

Corn was meant to feed livestock and people. If ethanol was such a wonderful product it wouldn't need to be subsidized.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

A large crowd turned out Saturday to see a new landmark in Minneapolis — a giant pencil near Lake of the Isles.

John Higgins, a homeowner on East Lake of the Isles Parkway, commissioned an artist to turn his damaged bur oak tree into a 20-foot-tall No. 2 pencil. The work is called the “Loti Tree.”

I wonder when it will be sharpened.

How long can you tread water? Sean Bickings, 34, not very long.

A man drowned in an Arizona lake as police officers stood by and allegedly ignored his pleas for help, according to a bodycam transcript of the interaction.

Police officers were responding to a reported disturbance between a couple near the Elmore Pedestrian Bridge in Tempe on May 28 when one of the people jumped into the lake, the local station News 12 reported.

Sean Bickings, 34, and his partner denied that any physical altercation had occurred when officers arrived just after 5 a.m.

The officers then told the couple that they were running their names to check if either had any outstanding arrest warrants when Bickings climbed over a four-foot fence toward the water and dove in, bodycam footage obtained by News 12 shows.

105 Rex B, in the last thread you brought up a very important, almost bizarre, and little noted aspect of WWII.

The complete lack of any interference in Lend-Lease shipping to the USSR, via the Pacific (the biggest by volume of the three routes - Arctic ports and Iran/Caucasus being the other routes) by the Japanese navy.

Japan was understandably frantically cautious about anything that could provoke Moscow. Tokyo had its hands more than full with China, and then the Allies, by the time the Pacific route was ramping up. If Japan had contested that route via submarine warfare, it would have been quite the challenge for the US.

Ironically, this Japanese caution persisted right up to the day Moscow dropped their diplomatic bomb on them and declared war - ironic because in the last few months prior, the US had launched a special urgent new round of Lend-Lease to the USSR, specifically to support Soviet attacks on Japanese forces in Manchuria and even amphibious ops against Japan itself. All this materiel sailed to the Soviet far east, safe from Japanese subs.

Sure, and if markets were free, we would not have to go to war to protect cheap oil from the Saudis and other MENA bad actors.

And what are the acres that grow cotton "meant to produce"? This is terrible logic. Corn acres are designated by God to feed livestock and people? Do you have a chapter and verse for that article of faith?

We are a nation that are so productive we have excess grain ... and instead of selling it cheap (due to overproduction) we (like Joseph in Egypt) decided to use our overproduction in other ways, so our enemies would not profit from our productivity ... we instead would act a little like OPEC .. restrict supply to raise prices for those that do not produce enough food to feed themselves.

just my opinion of course.

160 There are better crops, hell, even better varieties of corn, and better processes, that can be used for vegetable based energy production. I have no problem with "growing energy" as such, but the entire corn ethanol industry in the US is so perverted and distorted that it has nothing to do with actually producing energy anymore. It's just a weird cartel-ish racket designed to funnel money into the pockets of gangsters.

We were taught to give the victim a sock to the jaw to stun them, then get the crook of one's elbow under their chin to swim them to safety; usually works. But if it doesn't, better not to drown while attempting a rescue. A two-fer in that case is not optimal.

I don't believe that is how it's generally done in the US. Pretty sure they just do some bullshit process on field/feed corn for appearance's sake, dump whatever they wring out of it into the nearest body of water, and then go buy ethanol from South America to dump into the gasoline pipeline.

I don't see a point there. Cotton acres can grow soybeans, or other food.

Corn/soybean/wheat acres became more productive ... so there was excess and plummeting prices for producers (or our nationally essential food supply). If 40% (I doubt that number, but maybe, not around here) of corn goes to ethanol production, it still produces other products that feed cows (mostly, but also other bi-products).

So your "what percent of acres go to the ethanol plants" means nothing because part of the corn that goes to ethanol plants is used to make ethanol, part is high protein cow food. It is not a "see, 40% is accurate" gotcha statement.

Plus, what does "historically" hav e to do with any of it" "Historically" we need more buggy whip factories.

231 "Approximately 40 percent of corn grown in the U.S. is used for ethanol."

This is a very old lie, repeated so often it is accepted as fact by "the ignorant masses". Since the corn used for ethanol has other bi-products, the real number is about 23%.
Posted by: illiniwek

That doesn't make it a lie, as written.

Say 40% of the cars in my town are used for Uber services. You don't have to reduce the percentage if they're also used for the drivers' personal trips. 40% of the cars are used for Uber. Now, in the same situation, if you said "40% of the gas is used for Uber services," it would be a lie.

If 40% of the corn grown is used for ethanol, you don't have to reduce the percentage if the leftover parts of the corn are also used for animal feed or whatnot. I assume that would also happen if the corn was used for non-ethanol purposes, so the comparison is apples-to-apples. Or cobs-to-cobs.

But not COBs to COBs. Ethanol goes into COBs, it doesn't get extracted from them.

Well, initially, ethanol was added as an "oxygenate", i.e. partially-burned hydrocarbon, in an effort to reduce pollution. It was never intended to make up for a shortfall in petro fuels.

275 John Cornyn says bipartisan gun legislation won't include weapons bans or expanding background checks
https://t.co/0w4LTGrfal
Cornyn on Monday made clear in a Senate floor speech that there are limits to what he and the Senate GOP conference are willing to support in their efforts to pass bipartisan gun legislation.

WASHINGTON - U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, the lead GOP negotiator in the Senate’s efforts to pass bipartisan gun safety legislation, is managing expectations over what kind of bills he’s willing to get behind.

But the answer to that question isn't going to satisfy many Democrats who are pushing for restrictions that include expanded background checks and raising the age to purchase a firearm in the wake of the devastating elementary school shooting in Uvalde.
"Targeted reforms, I think, is the way to get to where we need to go," Cornyn said in a Senate floor speech on Monday.
"We're not talking about banning a category of weapons across the board, a ban for certain high-capacity magazines or changing the background check system by adding additional disqualifying items," he said.

So far I like both the slightly sweet ones, and the very dry bourbon-ish ones.

There's a tremendous range of flavor notes in different rums, owing to the usual reasons (molasses or cane juice to start, pot or column still or a mix, ABV at bottling, aging and vessels in which aged).

Try Real McCoy 12-year (Barbados, bourbon-ish, excellent), or Neisson Reserve Especiale (Martinique, very dry), or even (for less $) a sharp Spanish-style solera like Ron Alegro XO (Dominican, blend). Any sweetness in these is mild, and part of a much larger flavor experience.

299 We had no home pool in high school, unlike county and some private schools, so we were nomads. Our final home pool senior year was, fittingly, the one at Miramar (then a Naval and not USMC air station), setting for the awards ceremony scene in the original Top Gun.

It really did work out. It was *unheated*. Which, in November, in a pool of that size, meant ..... cool. We beat at least 2 much better teams at "home" thanks to their being unable to adjust to the cold. This got us to the county finals - in the big pool at the former Camp Gillespie, site of early WWII USMC paratrooper training - where we were blown out by a county school.

Top Gun, airborne training - see I'm trying to keep things topical and thematic here.

301 We raced alky engines for years. We burned methanol, not ethanol. Similar but not the same. Not chemically very efficient, requiring about 140% compared to gasoline. It was mechanically efficient, resulting in "more equal" performance in various weather conditions. Could be a bitch to start the engine in cold weather - we used gasoline to prime. Methanol was much less expensive than race gas. Alcohol is not necessarily very friendly to the environment, either when burned in the engine or in production.

I've been told the line can freeze .
Posted by: Anti

check the solinoids. should be two. one for the dispenser and one for the ice maker. if the ice maker isn't getting water, it could be the solinoid, or the line is frozen. do you hear the solinoid click or clunk? they are interchangeable. swap the dispenser one with the ice maker one. a known good part in the system will let you know that supply isn't an issue. from there listen for solinoid activation, as well as checking the line for blockages.

Republicans open the door to expanding federal gun background checks to juvenile court records
https://go.shr.lc/3tGrbVt

House and Senate Republicans say they are open to including youth felony records in the federal background checks for purchasing firearms.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, the Republican leading the gun legislation negotiations with Democrats, said he is looking at closing the juvenile records loophole in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, which is used to approve firearms purchases.

Mr. Cornyn has stressed that an expansion of the background check would not infringe on Second Amendment rights, which is a pivotal argument for gaining Republican support.

"My firm belief is that the Second Amendment protects the rights of all law-abiding citizens to keep and bear arms. And we start from that premise. But when young men who obviously are mentally ill [have] their records basically protected because they were just turning of age ... this is a sign to us that we need to do a lot more than we have done in the past"

368 It's really kind of fascinating how different regions of the world approach "bioenergy"

Europe does tons of it, fairly efficiently too. China does biofuels, but they primarily use animal wastes. The US is, oddly enough, more about municipal wastes as a fermentation stock for energy production. I think (not 100%, may be misremembering) that more energy is produced in the US by fermenting municipal excrement in treatment plants than by fermenting corn. Most of the ethanol that goes into gasoline here comes from South America. Iowa is barely a blip on the graph, as far as i recall. (I may be exaggerating a bit, but the point still stands)

377 "Seriously, it doesn't bother me that you grow corn for ethanol. With the market distortions in effect, you would be crazy not to. But please don't try to defend it as being a wise use of resources." Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon

point numero uno: none of my corn goes to ethanol, it goes down river to points unknown.

point numero dos: I made no effort to defend ethanol from corn as a "wise use of resources" ... I compared it to OPEC which restricts production to maintain an adequate supply/demand balance.

USA still pays farmers to grow acres into trees, to limit production. This is a (wise for the nation?) strategy.

I'm working on the mentality issue of people that think "Land Must Be Used To Produce Food" versus all the freedom concepts we here preach about. And I lean toward government has a strong role, but not when they are a corrupt globalist mafia government.

for small engines, idk why they can't make them work with E10, my guess is they may like all the money they make on putting in new carburetors.

In any case, Mercury Motors says E10 can work fine. 10% ethanol fuel will do damage when it is put into a tank that has a lot of water because it had been run on non-ethanol fuel. There is too much water sitting in that tank, and the ethanol absorbs so much of it that it makes dome bad chemical that can do damage.

Otherwise, the ethanol absorbs the water and does no damage (except less power as the water gets exhausted).

The husband didn't test positive, so he went ahead and flew home. The wife is still in Germany until she no longer tests positive.

The really bad thing, though, is that her mother died 2 days ago from cancer, and she couldn't be there.

Over time, ethanol in fuel absorbs water. The water in the fuel allows microorganisms to grow. The microorganisms oxidize ethanol to acetic acid. The acid corrodes metal.

The process isn't fast, so if you fill up every couple of weeks, it shouldn't be a problem. But it's worse in small engines, which can sit for a long time without being run.

LG has a second ice maker that does that craft ice, those spherical things that don't melt fast. That might have been cool, but I didn't get the LG.

449 Over time, ethanol in fuel absorbs water.

Well if I was producing corn in Nevada you would have a point. But any rain in the Midwest is flushed down the Mississippi. That was another HUGE irritating LIE ... as if that rain would not be coming if it was not used for corn. (it would be used to grow pigweed and giant ragweed).

Good Grief ... it is not known as the Muddy Mississippi for nothing. We don't take the limited water ... we control the MASSIVE rains.

Matthew Henry. Bible expositor and pastor who died around the mid 1700s in England . If you have a pastor who takes their sermon study and preparation seriously they will have heard of Matthew Henry, and if you want to give a great gift for your pastor consider giving them a two hour
Video of the life of Matthew Henry produced by Media Gratiae . You can by it from Vimeo for about $10.00 or rent it for a day for $5.00 . It's really a wonderful film about one of the last great beacons of the Puritan movement in England and it made me thankful to God again that such a man existed and gave his life in service to the Lotd and the church and the people which he served.

461 447 I live in the woods, surrounded by oak, maple, ash, birch and pine, even some black walnut. I have tried numerous seed, fertilizers etc. I can get the lawn to look great for 1 month maybe. I even re-did my whole yard and had black dirt hauled in. Seeded it etc. It looked awesome that time for maybe 2 months. Then it starts to dye off from the shade etc. I had a lawn guy come over and he said, you can have a lawn or all these trees but you can't have both.

Posted by: Minnfidel at June 07, 2022 12:23 AM

We have several bur oak trees in our yard that are over 100 years old. The previous owner tried to grow grass for years. He had a very green thumb, and failed miserably.

My wife and I researched what grows on the floor of an oak forest. She planted several varieties of ground covers. Some died, but several spread very well. Now the part of the yard with the deepest shade has some good green AND I don't have to mow it.

I can ask her what worked well if you really want to battle that dragon one more time?

idk about microorganisms in fuel, but ethanol absorbs some water quickly. In a sense, that can be a good thang, unless it is put into a tank that had water in the bottom, and then ethanol absorbs its capacity, and I think some bad chemicals can result after that capacity is reached.

Not sure how to get that water out before using ethanol, but my cars (over 20 years old) never had a problem with 10E.

I had to completely rebuild a fuel injection on a harley that say for 4 years. Ho-ly--shit. Everything is in the gas tank. The pump, regulator, the lines that connect it all, etc. The sock was rotted off and was laying in the tank, the pump was rusted, the plastic lines that connect it all literally crumbled in my hand like they were potato chips. Same deal with the sock fragments. The injectors were toast, I have an injector cleaner, you put the injector in, push the button, hear the little click from the injector opening, and you back wash it with carb cleaner. these didn't click, they were gummed up permanently closed. I tried for an hour to free them. I pulled the throttle body and it looked like the entire intake manifold, ports, valve stems, etc, were painted with a maroon nail polish. I changed everything and it lit right up, but it took like a dozen tries before it stayed running, and then it ran fine. What a mess.

478 "American corn farming uses more oil then the ethanol produces can replace. Again, insanity." Posted by: 18-1

This is totally false ... it is a statement of blind faith, faith in some ideology that is now accepted as fact, much like 2+2=5.

"Life cycle analysis (LCA) of ethanol production from corn grain has yielded a net energy ratio of 1.2 to 1.45 (Liska et. al. 2009). This represents just a 20 to 45% positive energy balance when producing ethanol from corn. This number has been the criticism of corn ethanol because of the large amount of fossil energy used to produce ethanol. A USDA Study published in 2016 reports increased efficiency at ethanol facilities have led to fossil energy ratios nationally at 2.0 to 1 and with some individual facilities with ratios as high as 4.0 to 1. "

it was always positive ... so some oil energy in, much more energy out. BUT, the answer ... stop oil production ... yeah, we are in Alice in Wonderland .. but really, they just want to kill us.

During the "category sort" I can set aside special stuff and/or individual sizes that are scanty in my bolt bins.

No the water used in the manufacturing process is what I asked. Go look it up. The water is then hazardous waste. If it (ethanol) was so awesome it would not need to be subsidized. It's another scam to get the ag vote. You're not being honest about the water issue. That water can never be used again. It's a net polluter. 511 Kindltot, have not tried any domestic rums. Sazerac down in NOLA blends one called Jung and Wulf (series of 3, Guyana, Trinidad, Barbados), but as the names suggest, it's all from the Caribbean. The Guyana is very good and interesting.

I probably should poke around in the domestic offerings. Sort of curious what they start with, maybe there's some cane still grown just for this purpose in CONUS. Nothing wrong with importing your cane juice or molasses. St. Lucia no longer grows sugar cane but has some respected rum producers.

Posted by: Minnfidel at June 07, 2022 01:03 AM (GwxCX)

I find that doubtful. What are they going to do, store huge ponds of "alcohol-polluted" water forever? Hint: they can't. Just let it run out into shallow ponds to evaporate, and the concentrated muck left behind can then be treated, or pumped down disposal wells. Same as is done with produced water from oil fields.

513 Theodore if you're still here, I recall you were dabbling in rum. A couple of low-cost and very good ones to keep your eyes open for are South Bay Small Batch (Dominican blend, very smooth), Doorly's 12 and Seale's 10 (both Barbados, both Foursquare distilling). All under $30 and all very good.

The water that evaporates gets used again. It's called "rain". You take your contaminated water, and evaporate most of it off, leaving a concentrated brine or "liquor" that you either reprocess or dispose of.

OK, I missed that. but DDG is also dried distiller grains, the high protein food left after the ethanol process. So even if 40% of total corn (which I doubt) goes through the distiller ethanol process, good cattle food emerges on the other side.

So it is a LIE (even if by deception, the lie of omission) to say 40% Goes To Ethanol, when no, only 60% of that 40% goes to ethanol. It is not all "going to ethanol" when 40% goes to cattle (and other uses).

Rhomboid: For a mere $3K or so, you can get one of those "gourmet" ice makers, which make perfectly clear ice. The way they make clear ice is to freeze from the inside out, or actually in layers. A steady trickle of water if run over the molds, allowing it to freeze in layers as it were.

This is how icicles form. Freeze from the inside out, with water trickling down.

546 How do you make ethanol? Do you let the corn soak in water, and put it in the gas tank?

No, dammit, you distill the mash. With a great big natural gas burner. You could burn corncobs -- a mountain of corncobs -- and claim an energy gain (and some epic air pollution like you've never seen).

As long as alcohol is made by distillation, it's going to require more energy input than burning the alcohol can yield. You can bar fight all night about the noble farmer, and that does not change. Farmers don't believe in your liberty any more than factory workers do. They maneuvered for over a century to get federal farm programs going their way, and when it was democrats offering the controls, they were all democrats. It's a business like any other business, and they expect results for their donations.

559 "As long as alcohol is made by distillation, it's going to require more energy input than burning the alcohol can yield."

FALSE

you need numbers, not generalities. Small input might yield large return. The free energy part of the equation is sun growing the corn ... solar energy done right.
-- also the source of most of our oil ...

"Dead plankton - both phytoplankton and zooplankton - as well as algae and bacteria sink to the bottom of an ancient ocean and mix with inorganic, clay-like materials that enter these oceans from streams and rivers." that is our oil.

Also, before they shut down out energy production, there was an excess of natural gas, so making a liquid fuel like ethanol from corn was easier (maybe, idk) than making liquid natural gas.

Especially when producing excess corn was supportive of farmers growing a cheap American food supply, while then raising prices on our energy/food deficient enemies that needed food.

This thing is a Frigidaire. It's the second one. The first one developed a YUGE crack in the inner shell on the freezer side. Wasn't anything to do but replace it under warranty, which they did.

At the time they were building this house, appliances were in short supply due to the Covid crap (and may still be, fuckup-age is getting worse in everything), and you took what they could get.

The contractor said he could deals with a local appliance outfit, and he wasn't lying, as he got most of that stuff at a pretty good discount. This stove I saw at Lowe's for a little over $1500. He got it for $1100.

596 Re regular fridge ice makers. This new fridge in the new house has one of those with the dispenser in the door. It's a pile of crap. That dispenser takes a lot of room, and this thing doesn't have the capacity to keep up with my needs, being an ice tea addict and all that.

The non-dispenser ones can keep up. This thing is just inadequate.

Is your Frigidaire ice maker broken? My Gallery makes complete and half frozen cubes. I finally found a replacement part, but can't find a vid that shows how to switch it out. Plenty of vids for the other models, but not the version of my part.

I'd recently watched a Mel Gibson movie solely because Mel Gibson: During the Great War, he and this other fellow walk across Australia, end up in the invasion of Gallipoli, and the other fellows dies... That's it!

Whatever you do, don't get my re-tard meteorologist cousin started on "normal" vs average quantities. He's disgusted that local weather stations and the Weather Channels have started reporting "normal" values as averages.

He's been boycotting the Weather Channel for some time now anyway, because of their ridiculous hyping and sensationalism. The last straw was when they started naming winter storms.

The hyper with weather now is getting ridiculous -- helps push the global warmuning agenda, and gets clicks and views and ratings for the weather guys.

"They just make shit up, now", my cousin laments. A local weather here on one of the stations just makes up terms, such as "storm fuel". This is some "index" he pulled out of his ass that he relates to the potential for local T-storms and shit.

Just utter made up shit, cousin says. There's no such term, no such thing. If he thinks he got some new metric that's useful, publish it, and define it well, and see if it makes sense.

But no, it's all about the hype and the views.
