I Must Down To The ONT Again

I'm not in much of an ONT mood tonight. Those cowardly pieces of shit standing around for an hour while children were being slaughtered.....I'm sorry. This is all I'm going to say about it because it makes me physically sick. I'm not sure I'm up to my usual whimsy tonight. Sorry.

Dont Run.jpg

To be clear, my opprobrium is directed at the specific people on scene who not only did nothing, they prevented other from doing something.

Safety Message

Twitter thread featuring public safety drawing from the 20s and 30s warning of the dangers of electricution

Scroll down, they are quite something. The drawings were supposed to be from a coroner who was documenting actual cases he'd autopsied, but I dunno. Mythbusters tested this one and said that your couldn't maintain a coherent enough stream for the electricity to get back to you, but I also know personally the case of a toddler who was badly burned pissing into an open light socket.

The Good Side Of Sports

Things are not looking good for the Flames from a sports perspective in the Flames/Oilers series, but Matthew Tkchuck too time to post a greeting to Ben Stelter. Ben is a 5 year old boy who is fighting brain cancer. He's a huge Oilers fan, and the team has wholeheartedly adopted him, inviting him to practices and games and giving him lots of time with his sports heroes. Pretty much all teams do this, if you ever watched a Ravens game and noticed that “MO” in “Baltimore” painted in the endzone was a different color than the rest of the name, that was (I say was, I don't know if they will continue the tradition this year or not) in honor of Mo Gabba, a 14 year old Ravens superfan who lost his battle with cancer in 2020. The Ravens similarly adopted Mo, and he in 2019 he announced one of the Ravens' draft picks, becoming the first person to read a draft announcement printed in braille.

I know professional athletes get busted on a lot here, and there is plenty to bust on, but there's good there too. Today I wanted to feature the good.

History Minute

What Did Medieval Peasants Know?

Pretty interesting article inspired by a recent story making the rounds that Medieval peasants worked less than modern workers. The article delves into why this probably isn't so, and other than a paragraph claiming that “right-wing” folks promote the time period as an example of the superiority of “white Christendom”*, it's a good read.

*Honestly, this kind of thing is so common these days that you just have to ignore it. It seems that no one can write an article debunking one side's silly claims without at least mentioning something silly the “other side” believes just to prove they are “objective”. I know all kinds of “right-wing” people, and there ain't one of them that is advocating for a return to theocracy. If you find someone who is, we all think they're crazy too. It's tiring, but that's the world we live in.

The World We Live In

Speaking of the world we live in, here's an excellent thread by one of the Gormogons (the account is shared by 6 people) on exactly that.

Health Equity

To Save Millions of Lives

This is “health Equity” in action. “Equity,” as you may know from my prior articles on the subject, is roughly equivalent to Marx’s stage 5 of History: Socialism. This is the period of time in which the government (either a vanguard, or dictatorship of the proletariat), uses force to equalize outcomes along all conceivable lines. Equity = Socialism. “Equity” is why Communists always wind up stacking bodies to the moon in pursuit of manmade Eden.

Tom Nichols Hardest Hit

Why the experts keep getting it wrong

Specific independent variables help us understand this trend, and appear to predict patterns of expert error generally. Innovative thinkers at least since 19th-century physician Ignaz Semmelweis – if not since Socrates – have pointed out that set-in-their-ways ideological monocultures are more likely than other groups of smart people to be grievously wrong. And such monocultures exist to a truly remarkable extent across mass media and academia in the contemporary US

Question For The Mechanically Inclined Morons

I have a Toro Timecutter 4260 zero turn motor. Now, I assume that a zero turn mower has 2 transmissions, one for each control yoke. I mean, that's what they look like, just behind each wheel. When I start up, it runs fine. The right wheel is just a tiny bit faster than the left, but that's no big deal, I just keep that yoke a smidgen off full power. After about 20-30 minutes of mowing, however, the transmissions start to whine, like they are under heavy load, and the left side loses all power. If I let it sit for a while it's back to normal. I thought that the left transmission might be low on fluid or something like that – as it heats up the fluid gets thinner and stops working properly – but they are sealed units. There is no way to add fluid to them. Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem might be?

Question For Morons Who Are Mind Readers

Postal Museum

Did you know there is a Postal museum in DC? It's one of the lesser visited branches of the Smithsonian. It's kind of a fun look at history, but only as it relates to mail. For example, the caption on a photo of the Wright Brothers flight is “This plane did not carry mail....but others in the future would”. I'm sure that the I'm sure that the curator would give his left nut to be able to go back in time and hand the Wright brothers a letter so the museum could claim that mankind discovered flight just to deliver mail. You can even see Owney the Dog! This postal pooch traveled across America and around the world, following bags of mail. I've seen plenty of male dogs, but this is the first time I've seen a mail dog.

54 People who "back the blue" have never had any significant interactions with the blue. They back a figment of their imagination.

Yes, we need - any society needs - some sort of lawfully codified system and institution to apply force against lawbreakers. We do not necessarily need police forces, and we definitely don't need police as presently constituted in the United States. The first police force in the continental US was in New York City in I think 1879. Somehow, people got along fine without them prior.

Mainly via sheriff's departments and sheriff's deputies and posses of local citizens who were willing and able to shoulder the responsibility of maintaining public order - a responsibility EVERYONE had, not just a select class of badge-wearers who've exempted themselves from laws they enforce against you. Going back to sheriff's posses might not be the best answer. Staying with what we've got definitely is not a good one.

66 Point of order! Yes, P thankfully got his ass kicked in the polls by Ken Paxton in the Republican primary for AG, 68-32%. But while some of that was clearly "no more Bushes", another explanation is perhaps even more true.

George P. Bush was an incompetent running the Land Office. He led the way in the work of "reimagining the Alamo" and derided how the battle there was presented as "too divisive". The Land Office had gone to hell under his watch as Land Commissioner, and in any event he ran for Land Commissioner in order to break into TX politics (he came in from FL). Now, his name and appeal to women might have worked initially, but in order to rise to further more high profile offices like AG, you HAVE to prove your leadership in previous offices. He hadn't and had two terms to do so. So he was wisely sent packing.

82 69 I was recently in a group talking about how to react if you are in a active shooter situation and you are carrying. The advice was to get out and not be a hero. But I agree with the previous comments and I could not run away when there are children at risk. I keep thinking about those parents standing outside helpless knowing their children were dying inside. Were there no windows? I can't remember ever being in a classroom that had only one door and no windows.

Piss on 120V to ground, no big deal. Piss on probably up to 1 or 2 kV to ground and no big deal (Third rail subways are usually around 750 VDC or so).

Piss on say, 7200V to ground, and it's a different story.

Electric fences operate at around 10kV or so, but it's basically current limited and pulsed. There's an old ditty I learned in grade school:

When I was young and had no sense, I pissed upon an electric fence. Burned my dick and singed my balls, pissed all over my overalls.

Honestly, the way we would test them if we came upon one in the field would be to find a plant with a stalk, strip the leaves off of it and holding it in one hand (and sticking your other hand's thumb into the dirt), lay the stalk on one of the wires and then slid the stalk closer and closer across the wire. If it starts to buzz at some point, it's hot.

154 It seems people don't really get the medieval period. At the end of the dark ages, France, Germany, and Britain were *primitive*. In some places there had been Roman authority, but by the end the Roman elites were dregs abusing their citizens and letting everything fall apart.

So essentially, most of these areas were starting from scratch. The developed a system were warlords became local rulers and fought with each other.

But Christendom, which outside of the Byzantines, had been weak petty states at the start of the period, learn and produced some of the world's preeminent powers. In the 700s the Muslims were pillaging Europe. By 1100 the Western Christians had conquered the Holy Land.

This is the story of massive success in a culture. Though, it wasn't to be permanent of course.

But the second wave 1500-1776 saw the colonial powers conquer large swaths of the earth.

And of course the third wave from 1815-1914 saw Christian Europe literally conquer most of the Earth

I wonder if it needs a belt adjustment, or a new belt. My old mower had an old belt on it and as it ran for a bit it got unpredictable and the belt would sometimes fall off. Never when it was cold, but only after about 10 minutes of mowing. Changed the belt and all was right with the world. I don't know shit about those zero turn things, but get me a schematic/exploded view, or even the model # and I could probably tell you the color of the corn in the shit of the dude who designed it.

I would like to see a system that would have significant non-imprisonment penalties for smaller crimes. People laughed about Singapore caning some Western teenager for vandalism. Isn't that a better penalty then giving him a fine or time sitting in a cell?

Posted by: insurgens ad opus at May 26, 2022 10:30 PM (Dd7tE)

Yeah, and cops and people in general need to stop calling non-cops "civilians". Cops are NOT subject to the UCMJ. OK, some might be, if they are in the Guard or Reserves. But by and large, cops are themselves civilians. A quibble? Maybe. But to see why that is important, read the U.S. and TX Declarations of Independence as to why that distinction matters.

It took a big step for the worse when police were given take home cars, no longer required to live in the jurisdiction they worked, and put on 24/7 duty status. They are never simply a citizen now. They're always something more - a super-citizen.

They've become the Praetorian Guard. All while being deified with every sticker, sign, and flag displayed by the plebes who love to be lorded over by them.

177 These monocultures often feature the lowest barriers to admission among the sciences. I dug up graduate record exam (GRE) scores by discipline for a recent article, and while there are certainly many brilliant sociologists, just 1.9 per cent of aspiring scholars in that field scored at the highest level on either the verbal or quantitative component of the GRE – alongside 0.3 per cent of social workers and 0.1 per cent of those headed into early education. In comparison, 18.5 per cent of mathematicians and 17 per cent of bankers scored at the highest level of the GRE scores.

Did the feds tell the locals to stand down while getting their BFD Supertactical Fed Units in place? Did they give an ETA to the local command? Did local command push back when given a lousy or indeterminate ETA?

My take, willowed in preceding thread

The official lid is screwed-down tight on the story. Never a good sign. What is different from almost every other shooting incident I can recall is how few officials are saying anything in public. No appearances let alone press Q&A by the school principal, school district supervisor, school district police chief, city police chief, and county sheriff (Uvalde is the county seat). Thinking the worst, Abbott may have told the assigned Texas Dept. of Public Safety officers (state police) to keep a lid on all negative info until after the last burial and after Biden leaves town on Sunday.

I've been looking up the annuals of urination electrocution. High voltage is usually involved. Not impossible for low voltages to do, but much harder.

Last case. Guy hits a power pole, knocks some distribution lines down. They're on the ground, still energized. He's fine, but he gets out, and decides to take a piss. He does it right on the down line, and that was the end of the him.

Account I read doesn't mention what voltage it was, but distribution voltages to ground run around 10kV give or take usually. 14.4 kV to ground is the highest Mrs. Duke uses around here, and that's from long rural runs. We're 7200V around here.

Shortly after 9/11 most of the left was publicaly saying they wanted Bush and Rummy to protect them. They were shocked that poor anti-colonial muslim resistance fighters had attacked THEIR city (as Michael Moore put it).

But after 9/11, the anthrax mailings, and the DC snipers Islam started putting up fewer and fewer major attacks. The left, was no longer afraid of them. And they believed that if they could just get Bush to lose the WoT the people would of course rally to them.

And so an alliance of convenience was born.

237 Your mower probably has HydroGear trans-axles in it. They make several different sizes/version depending on the size and expense of your mower. It will have an oil fill plug on the top side of the case. They are usually an allen plug, if you lay on the ground behind the mower the plug will be on the inside top of the case. If it is low you will have to jack up the mower so the tire is off the ground and run it forward and backward after adding some oil. Keep adding oil and then running it until it takes no more oil. Also it could be the relief valves inside but if that's the case just order a new trans-axle. They are rebuildable but they aren't fun.

I went (briefly) to a high school that literally had no windows. It was a disorienting place. One of the very few buildings I got lost in.

I went to a middle school in CO that deceptively had individual classrooms. OK, there were individual classrooms on the edges that had windows high up, and thise were the exception. Most classrooms in the interior of the building looked deceptively like they were individual classrooms - except that they were separated from other classrooms by a partition that could be easily moved if needed. (Not a curtain; the partition was heavier than that.)

I've been thinking about it all day. I'm fairly certain I'd be in my car and busting through the doors nearest to my childs room.

Although apparently that isn't necessary since the cops were taking their kids out during the shooting, so the doors weren't locked. Or maybe they were. Who knows, f*ck it, we needed an hour to go in.

328 If any of you have clarification on what I have heard.

1. The local PD had in fact a BOLO (Be on the lookout) for the shooter well before he got to the school. Related to the shooting of his Grandma I will assume.

2. Were they in fact in an actual pursuit of the shooter when he crashed his truck in that drainage ditch just outside of the school and if so, why the fuck did they not engage him as he ran towards the school?

I'm asking the HORDE on this one.

That's what's odd. Those automatic reclosers are sometimes called "three strikes and you're out". They will attempt to reclose three-times, with a longer wait interval in between, and then give up on the third strike.

It wasn't that, because we have those on the circuits around here. One acted normally earlier after a big lightning strike.

This was something different.

Those 3-strike reclosers will behave that way under a certain range of fault currents. If the current is too much, they may give up right away, and it's not likely an arcing fault that can be cleared.

One of Mrs. Duke's engineers explained a lot of this behavior to me one time. One notable incident. There was a dairy farm around here, main three phase distribution line went through their operation. They had big round bale hay fire one summer. They had a bunch of bales all stacked together, and it caught fire for some reason. They had a 3-phase bank feeding a barn on a pole that was right the middle of that fire.

Flames went way heat. That three-phase bank actually exploded. Blew the lid right off one of the units.

That caused a massive fault. Mrs. Duke's engineer said that tripped out the main breaker at the substation feeding the whole thing. He said the system saw it as a massive just about bolted three-phase fault, and just said hell, no, I'm a tripping out that whole line.

The dielectric breakdown voltage of dry air is around 3 kV/mm. But, under less than ideal conditions, it doesn't have to be that high. Trouble is, field strength can get higher than that around "sharp points", and start a local ionization, which then travels. This is how lightning works.

This is why about 1 MV to ground is about the limit for high voltage lines in air.

And then for the next hour they jerked each other off, combed their hair and took hero selfies while tasering, pepper spraying and pushing terrified parents around while the shooter was still in the goddamn school killing children. Children. A pox on these bastard lives. I now believe that some of those cocksuckers ran in there grabbed their kids and hightailed it out of there. Those first responders had everything they needed to bring this to a conclusion and they chose not to. Sounds right, but isn't. That stream of salt-water droplets is way more conductive than air.

Consider not droplets, but just the individual water atoms that make up "humidity." With no salt. (Pure water is actually a great insulator. Water with a few ions suspended in it is not.) You bleed off static electricity in humid air. You build it up in dry air, and then get zapped when you grab a doorknob.

Though I've never tried it myself, being a city boy, my father did get zapped playing "don't whiz on the electric fence" as a kid.

They just buried it because they know it's bad and they needed time to go back and figure out how to public relations this into the fucking ground. No, there is potential difference. A charged body "sees" a body with a lesser or opposite charge, and wants to exchange electrons to balance out the difference. That's why circuits work. This happens in essentially zero time. So, if the AC on the trolley line happens to be at -660 volts relative to ground, and that first droplet of urine is at ground potential, the spark jumps to it. Now that droplet is at -660, and the spark jumps to the next. Rinse and repeat.

453 >>> Sounds right, but isn't.

Posted by: mikeski at May 27, 2022 12:06 AM (P1f+c)

They tested it on Mythbusters. Turbulent flow and nothing. You can only conduct through laminar flow. They could get the current to flow if they put the contact close enough that it didn't transition to turbulent flow yet. This was after revisiting the myth. So they said getting shocked by an electric fence was plausible because you could put your wiener almost on it but a street car's third rail was not because it was feet away.

There were some videos of some spectacular arcing mishaps with power lines. One was indeed an air-break switch. Thing was designed not to be opened under load, it was just for isolation purposes.

Opening it with current flowing, and it would arc, even on the charging current of an unloaded line, which is what happened here. You get a few seconds of three nice little blueish whispy finger arcs dancing around as the switch is opened.

Then, the streams cross. Two of the arcs from adjacent phases touched, and boom, you have a phase to phase arc fault. The camera was saturated white from the brightness, you didn't see anything until an upstream breaker tripped it.

I heard a loud Bang!, and a fireball about the size of a tennis ball came bouncing across the lease, missing me by twenty yards or so, and then vanished completely. Rig crew had been working on a power panel, and a 600 volt 3-phase plug with an aluminum shell (size of a beer can) had an internal short to ground. Blew a one-inch hole on the plug's shell, which gave rise to the fireball, which was a plasmoid, like ball lightning. Nobody was hurt, fortunately.

Actually, it's more thermal effects causing the dancing. It's like a flame, hot ionized air trying to rise. Wind can blow 'em out. Those arcs are actually fairly low current relatively speaking. Low current arcs are blueish and purplish and whispy.

High current arcs get yellow and "bellowing" as I've heard it described.

496 >> In arcs like that is the air phase changing to plasma and the current is flowing through that as a medium?

Yes, indeed. In an arc, the air (or gas in general) has become ionized, and is now a conducting medium.

And this illustrates why opening circuits, interrupting current flow can be a problem with high voltage systems. Imagine a switch opening in slow motion. As the conductors break, a tiny little gap opens up. Current is still trying to flow. Inductance (which all circuits have), gives a little voltage kick trying to keep that current flowing. That kick is enough to ionize the air in the small gap. If there is enough energy and voltage available, it will keep going.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion (Mzdiz) at May 27, 2022 01:20 AM (Mzdiz)

497
AC is easier to interrupt than DC, basically because the current goes through zero twice per cycle. DC is harder. Even on small, low voltage switches you'll see the AC current rating is generally twice the DC rating, and the voltage rating will be less. If they even have DC ratings.

AS crazy it may sound, this is why some universal motor tools, although they'd run fine on DC, don't have a DC rating. They don't want to put a DC rated switch for the voltage. Of course, with modern variable speed electronic controls, they wouldn't work on DC anyway.

502 Arcing is just voltage traveling the easiest path to ground, electricity is "lazy" that way.

In the case of spark plugs, that's where we want it to arc. A good test of ignition coils back in the day was to see if the coil wire would jump 1/2" gap to ground. If yes, the ignition was judged OK to fire the spark plugs.

But ignition coils aren't designed to fire 1/2" gaps. The voltage rise could exceed the dielectric limits and burn holes in the secondary transformer windings internally. So it was something only to be done for a quick test.

You can make plasmoids, which is what ball lightning is, in your microwave oven. Just take a birthday cake candle, set it upright on a china saucer, light it, and place it in the microwave, and zap for a couple of seconds on "high". The candle flame will become a brilliant fireball, and the microwave will buzz loudly as its circuits overload. Keep it up for too long, and you will burn out the magnetron, or blow the rectifier. Keep your finger poised on the kill button.

He says they are merely a structure to set up fields which propagate current and potential. I don't quite catch the distinction but he tries to set up an experiment where he can show how the speed of potential buildup between two points in a circuit doesn't vary with the length of the wire connecting two points but instead by the distance between the two points.

That is actually essentially correct. It's the electromagnetic field that carries the energy from source to load. The wires are just "wave guides" you might call it, that direct the fields. Now, the length of the wire is important, that latter part of your description doesn't sound right as phrased.

Of course, you need the wires -- you need the conductors to make the fields do what you want. And you're going to have to waste energy in those wires.

To fully appreciate this, you need some understanding of EM field theory, and the subset of transmission line theory. Much math is prerequisite.

Ball lightning has been confirmed. Some Chicoms actually got the real thing on tape and made some measurements.

Still aren't sure exactly what it is exactly. There are several possibilities, and the real thing might actually be more than one of those. That is, there are different types.

515 I've been shocked by 24 volt DC working on a pyramidal load balance/turn table under a windtunnel test section that was all run by DC stepper motors. It felt like touching a soldering iron with my hand wile having my arm torn off. No lasting damage but a burn blister on my hand and sore muscles.

I've been shocked by 120 volt AC and it felt like getting my hand hit with a hammer. I didn't know what it was at first and thought that something popped out and hit me so I decided to touch it again. It's lucky I've made it this far in life really.

I'm trying to remember, and I'm too lazy to look. Cheapo residential electrical equipment has not DC rating. Some wall switches will, but loadcenters and breakers won't.

Now, up the line in expense from loadcenter to real panelboard, I remember some of those rated 240VAC would have a 48V DC rating. To get to 250VDC rating, you'd have to use the very expensive 600VAC rated equipment, which would 250VDC rating.

That was back in the '90s when I really kept up with that stuff.

518 I got a good look at it, whatever it was. Just a few feet from me. It looked self contained, swirling. It had some kind of mass, as it bounced along the ground in ever increasing frequency till it dissipated away. Like sparks from an arc welder, sorta kinda. Not really a solid, liquid, or more of a gas.

520 Have you seen videos by that one math guy veritasium where he argues that electricity doesn't travel in wires? He says they are merely a structure to set up fields which propagate current and potential. I don't quite catch the distinction but he tries to set up an experiment where he can show how the speed of potential buildup between two points in a circuit doesn't vary with the length of the wire connecting two points but instead by the distance between the two points.

I'm trying to think of a good analogy to describe this, banana. We'll go with a water pipe.

Imagine you've got a water pipe, filled with water. You've got valve on one end, and a pressure source on the other, with a valve. Line is dressurized.

Turn on the pressure source. A pressure wave travels down the pipe at roughly the speed of sound, much faster than any water velocity would be in the pipe. When that pressure wave gets to the end of the pipe, water will start to flow out of your spigot, even though it's much less time for that water flow to travel from one end to the other.

It works much the same with transmission lines.

529 As if the Atlantic had a clue about Medieval Europe. Barbara Tuchman is a tough slog to read, particularly since she often states a thesis and then blows it up in the next sentence. She was more interested in slamming Catholicism than writing a history. She spends an inordinate amount of time explaining how Catholics prevented us from becoming the modern world, and then explaining that Catholics invented the horse collar, which revolutionized farming, and the university, from which grew the notion of science, and then blames the Scholastics for the sin of coming up with the scientific method.

She gets her dates and people correct, but really did not understand how politics and the Church interacted, nor did she bother to look beyond her treasured "enlightenment" for the roots of the science and math we use today.

533
Now, when you energize a transmission line, a voltage wave propagates down it at for rough purposes the speed of light. Well, it's actuall a speed v^2 = 1/ L*C where l is the inductance per unit length and C is the shunt capacitance per unit length. That's about 80% light speed for most lines, somewhere around there, some 90% or so.

As the voltage wave starts bee-bopping down the line, a current wave starts as well. The magnitude of that current is just the voltage over the characteristic impedence of the line, which is the ratio L/C.

Now that wave propagates until it hits the load end. Suppose there is on open circuit. No steady state current should flow. Well, that voltage wave bounces back and the reflection goes back up the line to the source. A reflected current wave also bounces back.

That reflected current wave cancels out the forward current wave, and the line current goes to zero. The only net charge transferred will be that required to charge the total capacitance of the line.

Which is how they find breaks in underground power lines. Fire a pulse down the line, and if you know the math, you know how long it will take for the pulse to come back to you. So you know how far from your end of the line to go dig a hole.

Posted by: mikeski at May 27, 2022 02:09 AM (P1f+c)

535
Now suppose that line has a near short circuit at the end. Well, when the wave gets there, the reflected waves act very differently. The reflected current wave causes the actual line current to increase greatly.

Now note what happens. THe source doesn't know what the load is until at least the time it take for a light signal to get to the load and back, to carry the information so to speak about what it needs to do. :-)

If you terminate the line with a resistance equal to the characteristic impedance, there is no reflected wave, and the same current flow as initially.

A line so terminated looks to a source as an infinite length line.

Now, when add series resistance and shunt conductance (leakage), things get far more complex. Basically, your wave speed becomes frequency dependent.

Consider a piece of romex cable. That's close to twin-lead antenna wire, which is 300 ohm characteristic. You can look the actual properties and find the impedence and wave speed for romex, but twin lead will be close enough for rough purposes.

So, you throw a switch to energize a piece of romex feeding something. Say it's 240V. You'll have a transient current of just under 1A flow down that romex until the voltage waves hit the load and bounces back. :-)

This happens very, very fast, of course.

Wrench was just long enough to touch the other post when he bore down on it, and it moved quickly.

Wrench quickly became red hot, and stuck to the terminals. He had a pry bar thing (tool to open the cylinder door on the feeder housing) and used that to pry the wrench loose. Thing was red hot, and actually bent a little as it was red hot. That wrench is still out there in the shop somewhere.

As a result, they've punished us with the "pandemic", the fraudulent election of 2020, the riots, January 6, the destruction of the economy, all the way up to this sudden outbreak of mass shootings.

I suppose it's coincidental that the Buffalo event and now the school shooing check off all of the proggie talking points. For instance, in Buffalo, one of those elusive "white supremacist terrorists" finally appeared, following the preachings of Tucker Carlson and Trump by shooting up a supermarket with the dreaded AR 15. Now, a few days later, a disturbed 18 year old legally buys 2 expensive assault rifles, posts his itinerary of Facebook, and slaughters an entire 4th grade class while the cops fumble about outside. Since the background check failed and the "good guys with the guns" failed to prevent this, time to repeal the 2nd in the name of the children! It's too perfect.

First exploding battery. Going to Clempson Cow Collidge, junior year, I think. I'd stopped at convenience store. Got back, turned the key to start. Boom! WTF? Got to looking. Tiny little dent in the hood. Opened the hood. There was a battery with the top off, and acid everywhere.

It was the classic exploding failure mode, very rare. "Maintenance free", very hot weather. Water level drops below the plates. Battery is getting the hell charged out of it, builds up H2 and O2 from electrolysizing. Alternator voltage might have been a bit high. Who knows.

Heavy current draw upon trying to start. Spark forms between exposed plates (and why this can happen is also a bit of rare stuff going wrong), and lights off the H2. Battery blows.

That's what that was. Luckily it was contained under the hood.

Second exploding battery, well more a bursting battery followed by fire. Father and I are combining wheat. I'm maybe about 30 or so. He's in one combine, I'm in another. On these Gleaners, the battery was off to the side near the rear end, under the ladder to get to the engine on top at the rear.

I'm behind him a good bit, and I see a puff off dust, then fire at the battery area. I pull out, shut off the combine, put the thing in as high gear as I dare and take off and get him flagged down. Fire extinguisher we had thank God. Got it out.

Again, very hot conditions, maintenance free battery. Here, we surmised that the vent plugs had gotten clogged with dust. Overpressure inside due to charging. That blew out, and there was a short which got something hot and started the fire.

Third exploding battery. This one happened right under my ass, on a riding lawn mower. Dinky little battery right under the seat.

Battery was old, shot, and would take a charge. I jumped it off, well, with boost on a battery charger to get it started. Noticed a sulfur smell when I was trying to charge it pretty strong.

I'm mowing, and get on sort of slope. I hear a big "Whoomp!". I think I must have run over something with the mower, but I didn't see anything.

When I get through, I look and notice something looking wet under the seat. Flip it up, and see that little battery blew its top right off.

My father had another one explode. This was "operator error". Heh. This was before I was born. He had an old '55 Ford F-500 truck. Positive ground, 6V system. Battery was dead.

So, he and a hired hand jumped it off. You can jump off a 6V with a 12V, but you're gonna charge the hell of the 6V battery.

Well, the hired hand was sort of confused about a positive ground. Just didn't compute. You guessed it, he hooked up the 6V bass ackward. When my father, on the 12V side completed the connection, well, you had a 6V and a 12V in series, shorted out.

The 6V battery just exploded. Luckily, no one was too close to it when it blew. My father never trusted that guy again to make connections.

573 I actually heard a leftish co-worker defend the cops at the school. They were scared of the shooter because he was using the almighty AR 15. The SWAT team was hopelessly outgunned so they had to hide and wait for a more powerful backup.

578 Donnie Iris! The pride of Ellwood City, PA! He is still above ground. In his 70s at this point. I'd have to look it up to be sure.

589 Dad is in a 'Memory Care Facility'.

...which means a 'Home'.

It was as All-White as I could find and it is local. That may sound racist because it is. I'm sick of pretending that this hiring environment allows for Only the Best-of-the-Best in these facilities.

Dad is still my Hero.

Posted by: My Life is Insanity at May 27, 2022 04:26 AM (F48lu)

592 I still play "Guess the Word" with Mom. Her stroke has left her right side nearly numb, from the arm-up.

She still wants to talk while she eats. ...typical. You ladies can never stop yammering.

Mom is happy that Dad is out of her hair. As much as I want to deny it, with all the dangerous symptoms, I am, a little, as well.

609 Toro Timecutter 4260 zero turn motor.

As you've already guessed, it sounds like a fluid viscosity issue. It's a seal unit, yes, but "sealed" is a relative term in this case. Changing the oil will require removal of the unit. The service manual for the hydrostatic can be found on the Toro website which will run you through it if you feel you have the mechanical apptitude to tackle it yourself.

If you've lost oil, well changing the seals is a bit more complicated but the how to is also there in the service manual.

610 In a small town like that, people talk. How much you wanna bet that the cops knew all about that perp long before this?
Posted by: Cow Demon at May 26, 2022 11:10 PM (CdZ4i)

I wouldn't take that bet. I told Mrs. Cop that evening that it would eventually come out that this Ramos kid had repeated contacts with the local P.D. and either they and/or the Juvenile Court didn't do sh!t. A pattern of increasing violence is going to documented for this demon.

As far as the police response, it sounds bad, but 99.9% of the media people aren't in the business of providing factual information but, rather, propounding Communist propaganda. So, right now, I just don't know what to think about that part of the incident.

611 I went to a conference in DC once. One night we had a dinner at the postal museum! I didn't know it existed before that. They had an original stage coach that was cool. Other than that, I don't remember much except a lot of stamps.
