First-World Problems...

light problems.jpg

It's a crap design, but it seems to be ubiquitous! Luckily with the advent of LEDs the designs are changing, but for the vast majority or recessed lights in ceilings across America, those three little spring clips are all that hold the light into the can mounted in the ceiling.

Did I say three? Well, no. There are only two. The third one snapped off as I tried to reinstall the fixture after it dropped out of the ceiling. Why did it fall? I have no idea. Expansion and contraction of the joists maybe? Those springs are made of crappy metal riveted into the plastic base, so no surprise it didn't survive a little bit of torque.

And of course the plastic cracked, so there isn't even an easy way to fix it. Luckily they aren't expensive, otherwise I would have to hunt down the designer and have him flailed.

11 I have those same lights all over my house including the patio in the back. They are a stone cold biotch to change light bulbs in. Talked to an electrician buddy and he told me about sealed LED replacement units. Pull out the entire old unit and plug in the LED and shove it back in the ceiling. No more bulbs to change and the bugs can't get in them. Used to have to get up on the ladder twice a year to clean the bug debris out of the three on the back patio. So many bugs would get in them that I had to use shop goggles to keep them out of my eyes when I pulled the fixture loose to clean it.

20 I have 6 of those crappy fixtures in my family room ceiling 19 feet high. Replacing the bulbs over the years with a suction cup on an extender pole has resulted in three of the fixtures breaking and no longer held in place. 28 I found out last night that if I want the bed light on in my truck as I unload, i have to listen to a 130dB ding ding ding ding ding to remind me that the bed light is on. You can't listen to the radio with the doors open anymore, now you can't turn on your bed light while unloading. What is the point of the light then? And the kicker is that it is an LED which could probably run for a month without killing the battery. The dinger draws 100 times the power.

gorilla tape, or gorilla glue. They are surprisingly useful (well the tape, I have not tried the glue). My tailout on my 2007 Silverado started popping out on my rough lane after about two years. Gorilla Tape has been a solid fix. I replaced the lights once, but they also became loose. So Gorilla Tape is permanent.

Fortunately I kinda like the utilitarian look, and it holds up well when the truck gets its annual washing.

You didn't mention:
1) That if the CFL breaks it releases Mercury and needs a hazmat team to clean it up. If it breaks over carpet you're supposed to cutout and hazmat dispose of the carpet.
2) CFL bulbs spontaneously burst in to flame (a la Teslas). Again this results in a potential house fire *and* a hazmat situation.

Yes, this house had many, many exposed CFLs in recessed cans throughout the house. I think I have purchased and used all 30 of them so far there are a few more in hard to reach areas.

100 Another FWP: Faulty mathematical models.

According to the April 29 letter from the head of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Richard Spinrad, a subagency "discovered a miscalculation" that's responsible for the massive backlog, the Daily Caller reports.

Who's to blame? The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) - which is responsible for analyzing the impact of offshore drilling projects on wildlife - used faulty modeling which overestimated the effects on wildlife.

"NMFS understands the concerns of industry and is working with [the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM)] to expeditiously develop … revised regulations," wrote Spinrad.

Been wondering about this meself. Would not a large amount of windmills CREATE Climate Change?

Just like solar power would? You take sunlight out in the country, use it to make electricity, which should slightly lower temps there, as that energy is not being radiated back into the atmosphere... then ship it to cities where EVERYONE is heating their buildings.... thus you are moving heat from the country, to the city (heat Island Effect)....

Considering people are bigger as well as fatter than previous generations (bigger frames from all the extra nutrition) it would have made better sense to go the other way as far as having any meaning for predicting health and serving as a caution that one needed to get serious about changing what and how they eat. In this environment, especially with a work from home job, I wouldn't want to live on SS and "just a little extra" - SS only adjusts for inflation every 12 months, so it's always behind the price increases, and the gov keeps those "official" numbers suppressed in order to keep SS increases down. I'd wait it out awhile, although you can always look for the house you want, since you can bring the work with you...

There are hundreds of them in eastern Washington state. Besides being a blight to the vistas, and to bird life, it "feels" different. The air is displaced, not a normal wind. It's a micro issue and not a good one.

I've already begun pre-planning a trip there. Older son saw the one a couple of years ago in Idaho, and planted himself in that sweet spot where it goes totally dark for a few minutes. Here in NoCo it was 90% and it was cool and weird, but what he saw was even more awesome.

194 Here's a thought, generally, local codes will require fixtures, etc., that are UL Listed. Now, look at a swirch, fixture, etc., that was made 50-60 years ago, not UL. It will be robust. Brass, copper, assembled with screws and heavy porcelain.

When construction is undertaken today, such fixtures have to be replaced, because 'Not UL.'. Now, look at a UL Listed fixture; cheap, thin stamped aluminum, with aluminum rivets, plastic, etc.

It's another bullshit consequence of, 'We're from the government, and we're here for your own good.'

There's more to this, of course, after all, UL has become the clearing house for industry, If UL says it's good, then, it's good. Now, contemplate who controls UL. Oh, and btw, 'Double Insulated' is a dangerous farce..., but UL.

Well, I admit that it does get hot and humid where we live. Last week I stepped out into the backyard and got a steam-sauna blast. But it's often breezy and I've always been comfortable on the porch. Plus we now have air conditioning, which is a nice thing to have in the mid-south.
