Sri Lanka's Ruling Family Is in Hiding Due to... Hikes in Fuel Prices and Food Costs

Oh really.

Nearly a year later, Sri Lanka lies in economic ruin, with basic food items scarce, hospitals out of medicine and lines for fuel stretching for blocks as the country's foreign reserves all but run out. The wave of anger now gripping the country is as much about the family dynasty ruling Sri Lanka as it is about the economic disaster. Once empowered by a triumphant Buddhist Sinhalese nationalism after a brutal civil war, the Rajapaksas have been undone by what their own allies call incompetence and denial.

Now, that dynasty, which has dominated the country for the greater part of two decades, is on the verge of an end, with most of the family in hiding at a military base and only the president clinging to power. The latest to go: Mahinda Rajapaksa, the patriarch and prime minister, who was evacuated from his home this week after setting off clashes that left eight people dead across the country.

...

Over a period of decades, the small island nation of 22 million people had built a ,bloated state sector, robust social welfare programs that exceeded the country's means, a large military and an elaborate series of postwar construction projects. As economic growth slowed, it kept borrowing to pay.

Whew! At least America has done nothing like that.

The economic stress increased as pandemic travel restrictions dried up tourism dollars. Then came a disastrous ban on chemical fertilizers, as the Rajapaksa government pushed organic farming at a time when climate change was already threatening harvests and food security.

Just after the Russian invasion, Kyle Shideler, I think, noted that the Ukraine and Russia together were responsible for 25% of the world's wheat exports. He said something like "10% hikes in the price of wheat will cause economic crises, but 20% will cause governments to fall."

Sri Lanka was already headed towards crisis before Ukraine. Their calamity was largely self-engineered.

But Sri Lanka may be a preview of what's coming after Ukraine.

A friend sent me this: Sri Lanka's neighbor, India, has just outlawed all wheat exports, trying to hoard its wheat for its own consumption.

And India is the second largest wheat producer.

India, second-largest wheat producer, bans exports amid food supply concerns
Global wheat prices have increased by more than 40% since the beginning of the year

India, the second-largest producer of wheat, has banned exports of the commodity, due to a risk to its food security.

A Friday notice in the government gazette signed by Santosh Kumar Sarangi, the Director General of Foreign Trade, said that a "sudden spike" in the global prices of wheat was putting India, neighboring and other vulnerable countries at risk.

The export of wheat will be allowed in case of shipments where an Irrevocable Letter of Credit (ICLC) had been issued on or before the date of the notice and "on the basis of permission granted by the Government of India to other countries to meet their food security needs and based on the request of their governments."

...

Even though it is the world's second-largest producer of wheat, India consumes most of the wheat it produces.

I don't think India will be the last to cut off all wheat exports. This will be a chain reaction.

26 What's "interesting" is why Sri Lanka fell into anarchy.

Against the express wishes and desires of Sri Lankans, it's my understanding that their government outlawed synthetic fertilizers. They wanted to go "green". Honest Injun', that's what they did.

And broke their economy. Crop yields collapsed.(Nobody could see this coming, I'm sure)

Revenues fell, exports, currency under pressure, yadda yadda.

Beware "experts".

This is not really a cut-off, then. This is a "no more from this point forward unless we say so." That bolded bit it key. They will still allow wheat exports when the government deems it acceptable, as a form of pseudo-aid. But it isn't really aid, of course. They will get top dollar for it and wield the wheat supply as a weapon to achieve other policy goals. If you want Indian wheat, you can be damn sure they'll give it to you - so long as you support Indian objectives in the region. Maybe make some other compromises, too, like military bases or airspace and seaway rights or Indian sovereign control over the affairs of Indian businesses in your country.

Indians aren't stupid, and they've been watching China play these games for decades. India will play, too, and this new policy is laying the groundwork for precisely that.

Not just that but in a broader sense of: preparing for catastrophe as you say, but also looking out for their own interests and that of it's people first and foremost.

I was just thinking of how to characterize modern thought and I keep coming up with: we are all being treated like China as far as the bad days of Opium or the worst exploitation of Africa. 97 This hits very close to home for me. Out Sri Lankan "son" was just here visiting from UGA. His family are close friends of ours, as well, and visited us for three weeks three years ago.

The dad was a major general in the Sri Lankan army, and helped to defeat the Tamil Tigers.

Once out of the military, the government confiscated any and all weapons. So they have that going for them.

Between their own corrupt government and China taking over the country, they're doomed. Our friends are running low on food and necessities, and our "son" has been unable to access his money. We have loaned him funds to get by until he has access.

98 I don't think India will be the last to cut off all wheat exports. This will be a chain reaction.
++++
The great dream of economic globalization and just-in-time supply chains for, well, everything was predicated at its core on three assumptions:
1. Large-scale war is a thing of the past
2. Free trade is ascendant and the use of trade as a policy or war weapon is a thing of the past
3. There are no negative domestic externalities

The third assumption was wrecked and obviously wrong by the late 90s. The first two have held up until now. The second one is now gone, and - as Ace points out - will get worse. And not just wheat, but likely everything. The WTO is dead now, even though it doesn't know it. The first assumption is the only one that remains, and it was the stupidest assumption of all. Russia/Ukraine is just a warning shot across the bow on that once.

The years 1920 - 1932, during none of which was the budget balanced, were characterized by an outflow of public funds on a scale as ruinous as it was unprecedented, fostered by a continuous stream of willing lenders. A new era of industrial expansion, easy money, and profitable contact with the American continent was looked for and was deemed in part to having arrived. In the prevailing optimism, the resources of the Exchequer were believed to be limitless. The public debt of the island, accumulated over a century, was in twelve years more than doubled; its assets dissipated by improvident administration; the people misled into the acceptance of false standards, and the country sunk in waste and extravagance. The onset of the world depression found the island with no reserves, its primary industry neglected and its credit exhausted. At the first wind of adversity, its elaborate pretensions collapsed like a house of cards. The glowing visions of a new Utopia were dispelled with cruel suddenness by the cold realities of national insolvency, and today a disillusioned and bewildered people... are haunted by the grim specters of pauperism and starvation.

The real crime here is that people have become so complacent that they have developed an existential dependence on a food that is objectively terrible for their bodies. But wheat is very profitable and it's addictive like sugar, so it's been foisted on us through propaganda like the food pyramid.

I didn't say a return to stone-age agriculture, which is a Luddite green fascist fantasy.

Modern farming techniques are a miracle. The actual foods that are being grown, OTOH, are abominations. Wheat as we know it today doesn't remotely resemble the grains our ancestors ate. But factory wheat farming is immensely profitable for Monsanto et. al. and their patented seeds, so you don't find modern farms growing heirloom grains.

Hmm, hopefully these shelters cannot be reached easily. It's one thing to try to ride out an apocalypse in an underground shelter, but then add the stress of dozens, hundreds, thousands(?) of people looking for it and threatening to blow it asunder.

434 The actual foods that are being grown, OTOH, are abominations. Wheat as we know it today doesn't remotely resemble the grains our ancestors ate.

I think you can take this too far, but yeah on the whole, I agree. Part of the reason we have high yield farms is the genetic tinkering over the centuries to produce what we get, but I don't think that always has been best for flavor and quality.

For example: tomatoes. What we get now is low acid, high durability, and nice looking but virtually without flavor. Great for taking to market, not so great for your table.

469 The great dream of economic globalization and just-in-time supply chains for, well, everything was predicated at its core on three assumptions:

==
We've been heading in this direction on the first two by 2010 - it was obvious. Once the US tired of being global policeman, we were the only thing allowing secure trade routes. We aren't anymore, and won't start anytime soon. This probably also begins the end of DC as we knew it over the last 30 years.

This is a pet peeve of mine (and I should hate "your" team but I've stopped watching sportsball). The schedules are entirely based on a rotation. 1 home and 1 away game vs all 3 division rivals, 2 home and 2 away vs all 4 in another division same conference, 2 home and 2 away vs all 4 in another division other conference, and finally, 1 home and 1 away vs the two teams who finished same rank in their divisions as you in yours, vs the other 2 divisions in your conference. It's possible to fck around with the *order* of those games I'm sure, but that's it, and I think the calls during each game are where the BS can happen.
