The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“You can lead a man to the presidency, but you can’t make him think,” Republican Senator from Louisiana John Kennedy

Quote II

“I’ve spoken with other abductees and they’ve said the same thing happened to them, it’s quite worrying really.”Russ Kellet

Quote III

“We can also lead by example. Let us show as a commission how quickly we can put solar panels on our buildings.” Frans Timmermans

Quote IV

"I'll probably be eating Big Macs every day for the rest of my life." Don Gorske

Of course! Were you expecting any thing different?

The Biden administration this week closed a foreign lobbying investigation into a Hunter Biden-linked consulting firm without charges, delivering a much-needed win to the president's embattled son.

Beltway PR firm Blue Star Strategies had been under investigation for its work for Burisma Holdings, the Ukrainian gas company that had Hunter Biden on its board of directors. Biden’s work for Burisma has raised conflict of interest concerns, since the partnership began when his father was the Obama administration’s chief negotiator with Ukraine. The younger Biden facilitated a consulting deal for Blue Star Strategies in late 2015 to help Burisma burnish its image with U.S. government officials. Burisma’s owner, Mykola Zlochevsky, was the subject of a bribery investigation at the time.

Of course there is a conflict of interest. That's how our Federal Government rolls.

Anthony Fauci’s wife – who is also head of the Department of Bioethics at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center – authored a paper defending the ethics of corporations “pressuring employees to get vaccinated” and “embarrass[ing] vaccine resistors.”

Everything you wanted to know about gummy bears but were afraid to ask. Hey, The ONT is good for something.

Just over a century ago, in 1920, German confectioner Hans Riegel Sr. struck out on his own, establishing a new candy company called Haribo—an abbreviation derived from his name and hometown of Bonn (Hans Riegel Bonn). Working out of his kitchen with little more than a copper pot, a rolling pin and a stove, Riegel hired his first employee, his wife, Gertrud, the following year. While she delivered products to customers via bicycle, he experimented with hard candies before creating an entirely new sweet treat: the gummy bear.

“We know the stories of today [of] Apple [starting] in a garage, and at that time [Haribo] was a little bit like that,” says Christian Bahlmann, Haribo’s senior vice president of corporate communications. “[Riegel had] the will to do something different, to do something on his own, and to start with very few opportunities ... and very [little] money.”

Saginaw man shot woman once by accident, then 8 more times, victim testifies

SAGINAW, MI — Testifying from a witness stand, a Saginaw woman recalled the November morning she tussled with her roommate and “friend-with-benefits” during which she took a bullet to her abdomen. Believing the shot was accidental, she told the armed man before her to get help.

“See what you made me do?” the man asked her, before he shot her a second time. Running from her house with her daughter, the woman collapsed and slipped out of consciousness.

Hey Boo-Boo, let's eat these tourists, they taste like picnic baskets.

Three men now face jail time, probation, and thousands in fines after taking selfies near several brown bears during a 2018 trip to Katmai National Park in Alaska.

Recent sentencing determined three men who waded into a river to take selfies with bears will prevent them from visiting any U.S. national park for one year.

David Engelman, 56, of Sandia Park, New Mexico, and Ronald J. Engelman II, 54, and Steven Thomas, 30, both of King Salmon, Alaska, violated federal law by leaving the designated viewing platform and entering the Brooks River where a group of brown bears was feeding at Katmai National Park. The park requires all visitors to stay at least 50 yards away from bears.

45 I think "cell phones" and the cameras therein have ruined all sorts of things (obviously...)

The big parks included. It isn't unusual for people to get themselves into situations that formerly were "you're on your own". These days, running out of of sour cream and onion Pringles is a serious Emergency whilst at the bottom of Grand Canyon, so a call to 911 is placed. "Come Get Me. I'm Tired." I'd pay good money to hear the dispatcher tell them to get bent.

I spent a good amount of time hiking back country, sometimes solo, before the advent of cell phones or at least anything affordable, and even today the coverage is often poor in canyons. I got rimrocked once, that was interesting. I was unable to climb any higher, it was obvious. And the way back down looked really sketchy. Uh-oh. Off trail. Nobody knows I'm here. What now?

46 I really didn't think it possible, but I am becoming convinced that Bai-Den, the liberal socialist Democrat Party, the WEF, and the WHO, with the able assistance of the GOP Establishment, might just manage to destroy this country unrecoverably, even before the next Presidential pseudo-election results are available from Dominion Voting Systems!

Probably mix the juices with plum jam and maybe some sweet brandy like slivovic, and brush it on and use a torch to caramelize it. Mix in gochujang instead if you want a Korean touch to the dish.

Otherwise put it in the oven to brown and use the time to make a nice gravy with the pooch juices. I think dog is supposed to pair nicely with rice, though Cassava might have the right flavor if you have nice tropical themed sides.

84 So I occasionally visit higher ed job sites to see what's out there. (Okay, by "occasionally" I mean 3-4 times a week.) And yesterday I came across a posting for a history professor at Pierce College District in WA state.

Here's how they pitch themselves: "As an institution committed to antiracism, we are action-oriented and intentional in dismantling every systemic barrier that prevents Black and Brown student excellence and liberation....We are excited to invite you to bring your lived experiences and authentic selves to contribute to discourse and action in supporting Black and Brown students."

And lest you think that's just boilerplate tacked on, the listed job responsibilities include: "Creating race-conscious course assessments and evaluations," "Demonstrating cultural humility and intercultural engagement," and "the creation of an educational environment that affirms the identities and communications of students of color," among other things.

So basically you're expected to be an agitator, not a teacher. Just in case anyone thought academia might be getting better.

I fought to contain the groan that tried escaping my lips. It was at this point I began to panic; something was going horribly wrong, and I needed to get through this test before it got any worse.
By question 14 my worst fear was upon me; the Satan bears' burning, hot, liquidy dark magic crashed against my anal sphincter like a tidal wave. If the Republicans take control of the Legislative Branch of the Federal government, what actions are they going to take to free these victims, and to punish the traitors who have engaged in violating their civil rights?!

As far as I am concerned, most members of the Democratic Party are de facto criminals, as are compliant Republicans. If the Republican Party will not take a position against them, ONE THAT I CAN VOTE FOR, they join the criminals' ranks. In college I remember some guys at the dorm had a giant crate of ramen noodle packages. About the size of a closet. Thousands of bags. Some group of guys in the past got together and bought it together from a grocery supply warehouse and it was just passed on from group to group. No one remembered who it originated with though and it was still there years later when I left the dorm. I had some and other people did. It may have predated man or the universe. You'd try all sorts of combos of cheap additions to make it taste different. But it was still ramen.

I bought a new Presto canner 12 years or so ago, I financed it by bringing lunch to work for a month instead of eating hamburgers. I more than made that money back.
Even a stock pot with a rack in the bottom is a good idea to can fruit.

You can dry fruit simply enough by putting cut up fruit on baking sheets in your car on a hot summer day. It is better to have a dryer, but you can do it in open sun in your back porch if that is what you have.

Oh, and buy lids now. Don't wait until later.

I have to take my own friggin' stool sample (I'm not complaining, as the alternative is a colonoscopy, and I'm not one of these guys who actually enjoys having a Black and Decker Snake Light jammed up his ass).

How it works is a piece of paper with adhesive on the edges that you stick over the toilet bowl and do your business. Then you swab it and put the swab in a vial to take to the lab. The paper is flushable, along with the rest of the poop that's on it.

But I keep "choking" when it comes time to do the deed.

Something about shitting on a piece of paper strikes my bowels as wrong.

Some excitement in Ft. Inn tonight. I was getting gas for the truck a while back, $4.29. As I was pumping gas, I saw this clunker of a little shit box coming down the highway.

Ft. Inn po-po was sitting the parking lot across the street for the gas station. He turns on his blue lights, and goes after the shit-box. It looks just a normal traffic stop. He turns the blue lights on, and sort of "beeps" the siren.

Well, the idiot in the shitbox tried to run. He floored it, little 4 cylinder sounding off pathetically.

Well, Buford T. ain't havin' none of that. On go the sirens wide open, even more blue lights start flashing, and Buford floors his SUV cruiser like a bat out of hell. Sounds like a race car at WOT.

I have no idea what happened after that. Inquiring minds want to know.

The one near me closed. COVID-1984 got it, along with an IHOP a little farther away. I could see why the IHOP closed as in-restaurant dining was shut down for a long time and IHOP is not a take out place, but I didn't understand why a take out not-so-cheap burger joint closed. Well, I guess I answered my own question. The Mickey D's basic hamburger was a couple of bites more than a White Castle slider but around the same price.

Didn't go to White Castle often, but when you got a craving for it, you really got a craving for it. And it was 'a couple of blocks walking' close, a real bonus.

With the runaway inflation we are having, I can see a lot of lower priced chain eat-in restaurants going bye-bye. I've heard Pizza The Hut was not doing well financially because of 'no eat in' COVID-1984 decrees. But now with this inflation, I don't see how it can survive.

Yep, or just an idiot. It's hard to tell, but logically, I'd assume he had something in the car he didn't want Buford to find, or he had some sort of warrant. That's the only logical explanation to run like that, and in a piece of shit.

But logical explanations just don't apply with these idiots, of course.

I was quite impressed with Buford T's SUV acceleration. I don't know what he had under the hood -- Ft. Inn Po-po have had these things for a couple of years.

When Buford floored it, that thing jumped and was on the shit box like stink on shit. They disappeared quickly over a hill. I drove back that way to see if I could see any aftermath, but nothing.

435 Thanks for the ODB link, Fenelon. A nice reminder that we have to seek spiritual food as physical. Apropos of which, Mr.b and I have been buying a little extra, off and on. A couple cans of vegetables or meat at a time, a box of pasta and it starts adding up. (Also picked up a can of freeze dried food or two as we could budget for it.) Sorry you have this stress added to that of your physical illness.

Si-reen is a common redneck pronunciation of "siren". Which reminds me of a story of my youth. They were organizing a local volunteer fire dept. in this area. Some were agitating for it, and they got some funding and built a station.

Now, they needed some volunteers. They got a bunch. The trouble is, you get a lot of characters who are still little boys who just want to drive like maniacs down the road with their "sireens" blaring.

Such was the sad tale of a young man dubbed "whistle britches" by a neighbor. Whistle britches got his name due to a red light bar he mounted on his car. A full width flashing red light bar he got, 'cause he was a fireman.

The aerodynamics of that bar made a whistling sound at higher speed. And thus he was dubbed Whistle Britches.

They had to let Whistle Britches go. He'd just go wild during a fire alarm. Jump in that car, turn on his lights, and drive like a lunatic.

It was sad. He had to remove his light bar.

461 I'm at 3300ft . My gardening zone is the same as Anchorage Alaska. I grow spuds, onions, green beans, tomatoes, cabbage, pickling cukes, carrots, peas and leafy stuff. I also grow raspberries, blackberries, strawberries and apples.
Posted by: Sock Monkey * Ungovernable at May 19, 2022 01:52 AM (hCQwg)

I just bought a couple of inexpensive "greenhouse" tops for my planter beds so I can grow more green beans. Peas, carrots, all the lettuce you'd ever want, potatoes, raspberries (like weeds, they are, and they spread), strawberries (although the deep freeze last November killed them, so this year I will cover the plants), cabbage if you can stand it (I can't), but the cukes need to grow indoors, if at all, because it just never gets hot enough for them outside. Parsley, dill, radishes, onions, lots of things to can and freeze and pickle with. Plenty grows here, but it does take patience and practice.

And a somewhat stubborn determination. I built two greenhouse tops for a couple of my boxes. I planted my tomatoes two weeks ago because they were getting too big indoors under the grow light. 468 In the late 70's, when I lived in Soldotna, mayor came home from the bar late one night to find a moose in his garden. He grabbed a rack and whacked the moose. Fortunately for him, he had just tilled up a portion of his garden. Moose stomped him good. Broke his pelvis, collarbone and an arm. I have my share of moose here. If they want what you have in the garden, a fence is not a deterrent. I know that one from experience.

This is actually a problem with modern journals. Typos and other grammatical errors occur at much greater frequency than one would like.

Even the Journal of General Relativity and Gravitation has been known to let a few typos into print.

I didn't see any of those typos you mentioned, actually. I don't see my own typos. And I make a bunch all the time.

If I were going to publish something, I would have a nick-picking pedant go over it, one who didn't understand jack-shit about what I was writing, so he could focus on the wording, and not let his own understanding interpolate and extrapolate the typos. That's what I do when I read and don't catch them.

I would probably punch the nick-picking pedant in the face before it was over, but I would be grateful for his cleaning it up, so other nick pickers wouldn't hold that against me.

When I was at Clempson Cow Collidge, three of the Physics perfessers thereof were collaborating on a standard "physics 101 - 201" textbook. Sort of an equivalent of the venerable Halliday & Resnick.

It took a couple of years. I remember when the final draft thingy went through, and they were all reviewing it. Then came the illustrations. There are publishing terms for all these stages. The Three would find things wrong, and correct them.

Then, the First Edition was published in final form. And then they found several typos and even one or two outright errors in that published text. They were aghast. All of that process, and errors still propagated. They were fixed in later editions.

Just as with software, that's why you need to wait until the Third Edition or so before you use a text.
