A couple of confessions. 1st: I found this before KT's Gardening Thread went up. So I'm not sure if she covered it. 2nd: the Fabulous says I better not pee on her peonies. Or she'll be pissed.

Environmental engineering professors Nancy Love and Krista Wigginton are regular visitors to the Ann Arbor school's Nichols Arboretum, where they have been applying urine-based fertilizer to the heirloom peony beds ahead of the flowers' annual spring bloom.

Ah the old Bi-lingual defense. I think this guy kicks ass in the determination game.

A man has won a lengthy battle over a parking fine – after he refused to pay it because it wasn’t in Welsh.

Toni Schiavone, a former teacher and education officer for the Welsh Government, had been told to pay up after he overstayed in a car park in the village of Llangrannog.

A penalty charge notice soon made its way through his front door, sent from West Sussex-based One Parking Solutions.

But Mr Schiavone took umbrage with the fact the fine wasn’t written in Welsh, and refused to pay.

Why women marry serial killers. Interesting.

As bizarre as it may seem, a number of women have married serial killers. According to psychologists, some wed such murderers due to a sexual paraphilia known as hybristophilia. Professor John Money, a sexologist, explains that such wives are sexually aroused at being with a person who’s been convicted of having “committed an outrage or crime, such as rape, murder, or armed robbery.”While this paraphilia may account for some such relationships, other psychologists, authors of books about such women, and serial killers’ own wives offer additional explanations that are also insightful, reasonable, convincing, and unusual. Let’s examine 10 reasons women marry serial killers.

Florida woman could be Florida man. And she is definitely a Genius Award Winner.

MAY 10--Angered that a neighbor’s chicken had been “pooping on the back patio,” a Florida Woman allegedly retrieved “a bucket of pee from her bathroom” and proceeded to douse the bird’s owner with the foul liquid, according to an arrest report.

Police busted Christine Terman, 57, on a misdemeanor battery charge following a confrontation late Sunday evening at the Palm Haven Mobile Home Park in St. Petersburg.

Cops say Terman, seen at right, was mad at victim Lawrence Stenzel due to “his chicken pooping on the back patio.” So, Terman “went inside and got a bucket of pee from her bathroom, walked out on the back patio and threw the full bucket of pee” at Stenzel.

I am still trying to work up the nerve to get out the lawn spreader and spread the non clumping bentonite litter when it gets too nasty to keep adding extra on top of it in the box.
I mean, it really is clay-sequestered fertilizer.

98 To keep this classified as a smart military blog, just stumbled across a video on YouTube about everyone's 'favorite' class of US Navy warship.

Remember the LCS? They are still finding ways to fail. The Freedom class is scheduled for retirement in 2023; it seems the complex gear used to shift between the jet turbines and the diesels was too FUBAR so the ships were limited to 18 knots top speed. So they are getting the axe.

The Independence class has its own issue. 6 out of 13 in the class have hull cracking at Frames 35, 36, and 45 between the shell plating and hull. USS Omaha is limited to 15 knots up to Sea State 4. Sea State 5 and above? Head to port or reduce speed and bob at sea hoping the hull does not split open.

There are many people who need a good keel hauling.

102 from the dead movie thread I joined too late, if anyone cares:

I saw Spielberg's Westside Story recently and it was great. Maybe Spielberg was woke but he's still makes a great movie. I was told the script was basically the same. So, any wokeness comes from the original, unless I'm misinformed.

I've never seen the story before so it's my first time. My impression, as an adult of 29, is that The Jets were losers and loners while The Sharks, such as they were were not portrayed as criminals, a gang...but more of a neighborhood watch trying to control idiots like The Jets. They have jobs, you see.

Bernardo is a boxer, but he is about 4'11" and hits like a girl, Tony easily kicks his ass. He's a hot head but he's a community leader and takes care of his family.

Anyway, Spielberg created something that was so visually impactful, I couldn't help but be drawn in and enjoy the whole damn thing. Never sleep on Spielberg.

103 also...one reply:
336 Did you get to watch it with subtitles on the Spanish? Because I guess they refused to include them on the theatrical release.
Posted by: Buzzion

yeah, I read about that when we discussed woke spielberg. it was more like being in a room with a dual-lingual family trying to speak english but slipping into spanish. Very realistic, the girl...anita...who wants to live in America...everything's great in America...keeps telling people to speak in English. So, it's not like there's whole scenes with Spanish in a fuck you to the audience.

104 Went out to my buddy's ranch in Cal City today, and lo and behold, one of his black "Silkie" chickens (a very odd breed, indeed):

https://tinyurl.com/Weird-Lookin-Bird

Comes walking out of the coop with 6 tiny little chicks following her: 2 white, 3 brownish and 1 black one.

Which was strange because my friend collects this particular breed's eggs every day and has them for breakfast because they are very tasty. Apparently this particular momma bird "outfoxed" him and hid a clutch of eggs somewhere he couldn't see, and she hatched them this Thursday just gone. Cutest little things you've ever seen.

105 Let me explain Dune in a nutshell:

The movie cuts out as much off-planet stuff as it could. It may catch up the audience in part 2, but it's a pretty good way of cutting the movie down to a reasonable length.

You know how Gandalf literally reaches out a window to find a sidekick for Frodo? Sidekick has to be loyal, no other qualification. Having a mother for a sidekick is weird and it sucks. It is like having a past that won't help and no future at all.

Paul might be starting from scratch in one way, but using the past to set his universe in order (I mean that in the moral Jordan Peterson sense) is what he needs to do.

The emperor is betraying a loyal Duke (highest nobility) to help a shitty Baron (low nobility). The strength of these three seems to be similar, when the Emperor should be the strongest. That is the universe upside down and out of order.

Spielberg mucked around with the script and added in that perspective. Did need to do that, sort of irritating. Still, the dance sequences and how they are filmed are fantastic. Overall it is classic Spielberg quality. If you haven't seen the original film, you do not get better than that.

116 Watching "The Passion of Joan d' Arc" has convinced me that my personal theory--that there are only about twenty difference human faces--is correct.

This is a movie released in 1928. And you can clearly see Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Duvall, Patrick Troughton, Ben Stiller, Ian McKellen, Brian Stelter (ick) among the faces. There are lots more.

People are not that unique. They're like cats. There are only a few different coat patterns. They are unique in how their brains work.

And television and the internet are eroding even that.

123 Remember the LCS?

On the plus side, slow ships incur less damage when they collide with tankers, sea mounts, and whales.

More of a local group of guys trying to protect their immigrant enclave. they're not in it to be toughs or hurt people. So were the sharks always supposed to be that way?

It is one of America's greatest Broadway productions taken to the big screen. See the original film, it was made in the same time frame as the Broadway production, and it captures perfectly the live show. I saw the revival Broadway production about 6 times (I was working part time as an usher) and it was really great. To increase the range of the Sumner class destroyers, the follow on Gearing class had their hulls lengthened which resulted in ships prone to digging their bows into waves and a tendency of hull plates cracking.

The Harvest Moon is the full Moon closet to autumnal Equinox, and will occur in either Sept. or Oct.

Now, to look at all the complications on this. Most of these names are Indian names the Colonists picked up, but others have Anglo-Saxon and other roots.

189 That's a good rundown of the setup; the Emperor is always weak, you get the impression that is the root cause of most of the chaos going on. He lets himself get pushed around by the Spacing Guild, too.
Posted by: Tom Servo

The spice must flow.

Which is the threat the Guild put on the Emperor. With no Spacing Guild navigators (hopped up on the spice), there's no Empire, just a thousands of isolated worlds.
And the Spacing Guild navigators are needed and exist because "thinking machines" almost exterminated men. The "Butlerian Jihad" which destroyed all that. So no more smart (A.I.?) computers that could navigate ships through n-manifold space (which the Guild navigators can do....hopped up on spice).

Now, Blue Moon. That's the name of a 13th full Moon that occurs in a calendar year. It happens every so often because the lunar month is shorter than a calendar month.

Actually, there are two subtypes of Blue Moon, which are defined differently (the difference comes from misinterpretation of the definition).

The Seasonal Blue Moon is the third full Moon of a season which will have four full Moons. The Montly Blue Moon is the second full Moon that occurs in a calendar year. This second one was the mistake, but it's become accepted.

The people I feel the most sorry for (aside from the rape and murder victims) are the husbands and kids where the women left them for freaking serial killers.

He'd had stomach cancer back in 1986 (he was 25 at the time) that almost killed him, and cost him most of his stomach. He died at 61 last year of cancer and it sounds like he had quite a few bouts with various types of it over the span of his life, but he never revealed it to his friends or family.

He used to rub his stomach lightly when on stage doing standup. I guess that's why.

Turns out that is just one of four possible definitions of "Black Moon". This term was never formally defined, and there are different traditional definitions.

They are 1) second new moon in calendar month 2) The third new moon in a season with four new moons. 3) the absence of a new moon Feb. 4) The absence of a full moon in Fed.

2) is the inverse of the seasonal Blue Moon, and 1) is the inverse of the monthly Blue Moon.

Australian Rules Football is like the bumper cars of sports. But you get the rules pretty quick.

My Dad used to laugh at the umpire at the goalposts who'd wave the flag signalling a goal or a behind. He thought the long white coat and hat they wore were funny, and they were. From what I've seen recently, the umpires no longer wear the white coat and hat.

351 Hockey is the least accessible of the big 4 North American team sports because of the speed and visibility issues - if you don't play/know the game, it can be difficult to understand what's going on. Even in person, at a pro game, the uninitiated can be lost. Even though in terms of basic rules it's by far the simplest game (just 2 major line rules, that's it).

On TV - unless they use 15 cameras and have a good producer - even worse.

But the game itself is less complicated and interesting now than earlier. Ice hasn't changed size (though the quality has tremendously improved - we called the pro rinks we played on "cocktail ice", they were terrible), but the players are now (like in every other sport) incredibly developed elite athletes, who've been doing nutrition and weights and the whole thing since they were 15 (unless they're from Russia/eastern Europe). Which - helped along by things like declining coaching standards that result in stuff like slap shots that miss the net, from 20 feet, from players who have 80MPH wrist shots - has resulted in game of dump/chase (maybe), push/shove, boring.

354 Watched a few AHL games late this season in person, and wow, the bonehead Never Do This stuff you learn as a bantam was non-stop. Centering the puck towards your own slot when the area is contested. WTFF?

By chance an in-law of sorts is uncle to one of the players on the local team, and at dinner he confirmed my impressions. Even he said his college team (Div I) was much more organized and disciplined. He agreed the style today is fairly boring, though he benefits from it - a big defensive forward. Looks like he'll get another year and will probably see some NHL time next season.

Now, you gonna gamble you can get into that side-profile position and make the benchrest grade, sub MOA shot to effect the kill, before M.Grizz Esq. turns it's baleful attentions in your direction?

Remember, said Griz can outsprint even a horse in the zero-to-thirty range on the speedometer. No staying power, but if you're within fifty yards, yer fooked, and within a hundred yards, you've got time to KNOW that yer fooked.

Of all the tv broadcast sports, hockey is the worst. I remember when NBC had 'the puck tracker'. All the gimmicks they used to try to get a tv audience for a game not meant to be televised.

I also find the game boring today. It's almost like a good corner board check is a penalty now, 'roughing'. Yeah, ref, that's the whole point, to hit a player in the corner to rough him up so he won't go into the corner to dig the puck out anymore. As stated, boring.

I honestly wonder if any of the current players could survive a game not just against the old Maurice Richard Canadians or Gordie Howe Red Wings but against the Broad Street Bullies of Big Bad Bruins of the early '70s. The modern hockey players may be super fit with great skating speed (lungs), but I don't think they could survive a game full of the punishing hits from bygone days.

My ice, you will get off of it.

At a bare minimum you want a 12 gauge loaded with slugs, or a .300 Winchester Magnum or better for a rifle.

Pistols (even a .44 Magnum) will discourage one if it doesn't really want to kill you right then, and may kill it eventually, but "eventually" might be after it's already eaten your face and the choice internal organs.

Just reading -- this whole "Supermoon" thing is basically a bunch of crap. There is no astronomical definition, and most serious astronomers and celestial mechanics despise it because it was first coined by an astrologer. To serious astronomers, an astrologer is the lowest of the low.

This astrologer, Nolle, provided some non-rigorous definition that didn't make any sense -- too ambiguous. People who actually know what they're doing cleaned that definition up to a rigorous one.

And the media and popular culture picked up on it and starting hyping the supermoon concept.

Posted by: Jim at May 15, 2022 01:58 AM (QzJWU)

Back in the late '70's, my friend went to Bard College, a couple of hours north of NYC near Rhinebeck. The Moonies had purchased a former monastery near the school and had turned it into . . . something Moonie, no one was ever sure exactly what, though. The school would lose a kid or two every year to the Moonies, just disappear. And being over 18, well, . . . . The local police's hands were cuffed, so to speak.

One time, my friend's Mom was driving to see him and got lost. She drove down this long driveway and ended up in front of the building. A couple of aggressive and burly goons came out and demanded to know her business, what she was doing there. She explained that she was lost and their demeanor abruptly changed and they became sweet as pecan pie. Figured they first thought she was some parent looking for her kid and were very nasty about her being there. I hate friggin' cults.

Weird but true stories.

According to the stupid definition of Supermoon, there are three or four that will occur every damn calendar year.

For some reason the media, click-bait websites and such starting hyping this as "the largest, brightest Moon you'll ever see!!111!".

Again, stupid. Not a big fucking deal at all. The human eye can't really distinguish the Supermoon diameter from the "micromoon" (the opposite, far full Moon), nor the apparent brightness.

If you had a side by side comparison, both Moons in the sky at once, you probably could see the difference, but otherwise, nope. A full Moon is a full Moon to the rough human eye.

Indeed, this supermoon stuff is all crap.

There is an Okra Moon, the divination of which is known only to the Okra High Priestess.

Clempson spineless okra was first germinated during the Okra Moon by the First Consort of the Okra High Priestess. A ritual know only to initiates was performed in Death Valley stadium.
