Wednesday Morning Rant [Joe Mannix]

Rehabilitate the Villains

One oddity in our miserable excuse for popular culture is the need to reform and rehabilitate villains. Villains of old - especially of the female variety - aren't bad, you see - they're merely misunderstood. Tragically misunderstood. If you merely understood them and empathized with them, you wouldn't find them villainous at all. In fact, they were only interpreted as villainous because they had the bravery to stand against the prevailing culture of oppression and advance the rights of the little guy.

Examples abound and Disney's Maleficent is a feature-length, big-budget example but it is hardly the only one. This same theme is moving down-market into other venues, too, and it is becoming common enough that it is almost hackneyed. This past weekend, I saw a great example of this phenomenon in the shortest and cheapest of entertainment products: advertising.

It was an ad for Amazon Prime starring Medusa. But was Medusa an ill-begotten Gorgon monster? No, of course not. She was a misunderstood woman born with a terrible birth defect that made her hated and ostracized. She overcame the odds stacked against her and was able to live her best life thanks to the sunglasses she got delivered quickly by Amazon Prime. Once she was able to enter the world at large, she was able to channel her powers to defeat the Dread Patriarchy by murdering a practitioner of the Male Gaze while her friend looks on and laughs.

Don't believe me? See for yourself:

The whole concept of "the villain isn't villainous, you're just wrong and oppressive" has gone from edgy academic expression and PhD bait to big-budget entertainment and now down to run-of-the-mill advertising. There can be no classical villains anymore, just modern villains who are usually the classical heroes (or like them). This particular Medusa rehabilitation isn't even new. It was itself, literally, once that edgy academic PhD bait. Starting in the 70s, Medusa was embraced as a grrrrl power symbol about how fragile men just can't handle strong women and seek to destroy them. This reached a mainstream peak during the election of 2016:

In Western culture, strong women have historically been imagined as threats requiring male conquest and control, and Medusa herself has long been the go-to figure for those seeking to demonize female authority.

And now the cultural degradation of the subversionists is so common that it's even in in bite-sized, throw-away trash designed to sell free shipping. I look forward to the day that it finishes its descent into self-parody.

It bothers me less that writers are putting this crap out than how people seem to want to slurp it up every drop when they are exposed to it. Maleficent made a ton of money, so Disney has started going through their entire roster of evil women and rehabilitating them.

This is where we are as a culture: there are no heroes, and the villains aren't so bad.

I had similar thoughts when I saw this commercial.

The male gaze is punishable by death. Accidentally killing people by a woman is fine and forgiveable.

29 The good news is that these things have a definite arc, and the "villain is really the good guy" has now reached the end of the road. There's nowhere to go after it becomes part of the mass culture. The next trendy thing is abrewing in academia, and will probably be some variation on "the white man has been misunderstood, and really did great things". That's just how academia works. You have to come up with a new twist, no matter how stupid, and say "those other guys are idiots".

--------------

Rehabilitation and redemption are fine.

But there are also people beyond earthly redemption - either their crime was too heinous (e.g., child rape) or they are simply beyond redemption (e.g., psychopath).

Society can try to understand root causes, but root causes should really have limited factor in punishment. And for some crimes or individuals should not matter at all. When punishing an individual, we don't need to care why he raped a child, we should just punish him.

As you say, some bad guys can be rehabilitated and do so. But not all.

I've always thought there was a logical hole, a big one, in the narrative about "U.S. soldiers gave blankets with smallpox to Indians to wipe them out." First of all, how would the Army know? Was the notion of disease-bearing germs well-known by the 1870s? And second, and more important: Who would have been sent to drop them off? It would have to be a survivor of smallpox, and thus immune, right? So . . . he would know what he was being sent to do.

Sounds like we got us a story there. . . .

Heinlein said it best in Starship Troopers when talking about the guy who killed the little girl. Was he crazy? Almost certainly. Does it matter? Suppose you try and "treat" him. What if he escapes and kills again? What do you tell those parent? What if you "cure" him? How will he live with what he did?

Sometimes the old ways are best.

92 There is a line between "go and sin no more", and "you are of your father the Devil". Jesus cast evil spirits out of some and some went on to recovery.

But some that climb the ranks of evil have "sold their soul" to evil, "their conscience seared with a hot iron", for them their is no going back. These types are more the ones that climb to power, seem to enjoy wrecking/abusing good people's lives.

A guy like Soros comes to mind in the sold out to evil department, but I'm not claiming to have any special revelation on the matter.

My mother was a registered nurse from the days when the nurses did a *lot* of the hospital scut work as well as assist doctors. She left Florida during the Depression and traveled to NO to study nursing. And she was also a single mother, raising 2 rambunctious (but bright and honest!) boys when being a single mom was not yet fashionable. I'd say that qualifies as "strong."

175 Critical Drinker highlighted a moment from that show that I had forgotten about.

"You're holding a town captive against their will. Let them go."
"I'm not the one holding guns."

Well, you see, guns are ultimate evil and a substitute penis, so anyone holding one is a bad guy. But Fierce and Strong Wanda was simply acting out her grief, and we must understand her pain and respect her life story, not judge her. Maybe it was a little wrong, but we have to understand why she did it!

The Wanda/Vision love story was so badly handled it makes her TV show even worse. They met in Avengers 2 and had a mild attraction, then the next time we see them, they are supposedly so in love and overwhelmingly tied together that Wanda goes berserk when he dies. Talk about Tell, not Show.

At least one movie showing how she and he became so close and why it was such a great thing would have been good in between there, but no. They had their story flow and that's how it was going to be, dammit. So the next few outings for Marvel Cinematic Universe rotate around that storyline which was never told.

191 I've brought this up with my wife a bit recently. Men have been either dopes or dirtbags in popular culture pretty much forever. In popular culture, men NEVER have anything to say that isn't a) stupid or b) evil.

However, in REAL LIFE, sometimes men are smart and have some knowledge they'd like to impart. But a few years back TPTB invented the word 'mansplaining'. Now men can't even impart wisdom to women.

As a husband and father to 2 teenage girls, it pains me to say that I long ago reached the point where (by and large) women can go pound sand. If they're so all-powerful they will be fine without me warning them about an open manhole cover or unclogging their drain or offering to help them in the kitchen. They can mow their own lawns, plow their own driveways, and 'add printer' all by themselves. If they can't do it, then hire someone who can. I'm out.

This is the much bigger issue. The first 90% of the commercial was fine...kind of a funny/creative ad for sunglasses. The casual violence (including murder) of straight white cisnormative men (have to get all those identifiers in) is dangerous, and infects the brains of Antifa types, justifying and inciting their violence against those with different opinions.

This Twix commercial from a while back is along the same lines...a witch is encouraging a boy who wants to wear a dress around, and when the straight white cisnormative men boy says he's weird, the witch literally blows him away! Totally justified to kill a child.

Yeah, the mafia were well-dressed gang bangers, although they had more limits. In a way its hard not to make the life seem attractive: they are rich, powerful, can do anything they want, and live by a code of their own. They do nice things for their own people -- at a cost later to be determined. It is attractive on the surface, its just when you peel back the crust its full of maggots.

Just saw a thread on Orson Welles various ramblings and one thing he mentioned was how The Godfather romanticized the mob - which is a common critique. Goodfellas is usually the centerpiece of this kind of argument, and it's a great misunderstanding of Goodfellas. Goodfellas is Scorsese's version of La Dolce Vita, and in both films the high-flying lifestyles of the main characters are ultimately shown to be empty and self-destructive.

It's easily possible to look at the first half of Goodfellas and say, "This looks awesome!" But you have to completely ignore the second half to do that.

***
So 1700s, even earlier than the U.S. Army vs. the Apaches in the 1870s-1880s. My question about "How would they have known about the cause of smallpox" comes even more into play. Now, I'll admit that Jenner's inoculation technique was known by then. And the survivors of an epidemic could well have noticed that contact with a victim's blankets or clothes often induced a new case of the disease. They could have had a working theory of the contagion.

Still (if this even happened), who would have been detailed to bring the blankets to the Indians? If he wasn't a survivor of smallpox, did he get it too? Did Amherst know he was detailing one of his men to a possible early death?

Almost every current action or spy thriller movie has as villains white supremacists who want to somehow take over the world.

Which, nobody likes a true white supremacist of the KKK variety and I guess that would be an OK villain (if a bit trite and misleading considering there aren't very many "white supremacists" in actual existence and those that are, have no real influence or power).

But the "white supremacists" in these films are not portrayed as neo-nazi KKK members, - they are merely people who are against open borders and hold other conservative views.

The original story from the comics worked a hell of a lot better. He's called the "Mad Titan" for good reasons in there. But no, they had to go with sympathetic sad Thanos and his eco crusade in the movies. Some day the hype will die down and people will admit those two movies were pretty bad.

260 Goodfellas is usually the centerpiece of this kind of argument, and it's a great misunderstanding of Goodfellas. Goodfellas is Scorsese's version of La Dolce Vita, and in both films the high-flying lifestyles of the main characters are ultimately shown to be empty and self-destructive.

It's easily possible to look at the first half of Goodfellas and say, "This looks awesome!" But you have to completely ignore the second half to do that.

the attraction is the outlaw life, which Americans are always attracted to. From Jesse James, to Billy the Kid, to Butch Cassidy, to Al Capone, through serial killers who have an endless number of books written about them and endless documentaries and movies made about them.

319 One of the great villains in fiction, General Woundwort of Watership Down, is understandable. He wants his warren and its inhabitants to be safe. 321 At the heart of a lot of super hero stories is a power fantasy.

Yes, but. Yes, comics are power fantasy (Superman was two nebbishy Jewish guys in a hostile culture creating the guy who could do all the stuff they wished they could, but who loved America). But they also USED to be about good, truth, and justice. For Marvel especially they were about sacrifice and struggle to do the right thing despite the cost.

Good guys were GOOD guys, they fought for a better future against evil people who wanted only things for themselves.

In mid-February Abbott Laboratories issued a nationwide baby formula recall and ceased operations at its plant in Sturgis, Michigan amid reports of babies contracting bacterial infections from its products.

An Abbott spokesperson told DailyMail.com Tuesday that ‘thorough investigation’ by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Abbott revealed ‘infant formula produced at our Sturgis facility is not the likely source of infection in the reported cases and that there was not an outbreak caused by products from the facility’.

However, despite the findings of the investigation, the plant remains shuttered nearly three months later, fueling the nationwide baby formula shortage.

Posted by: BourbonChicken at May 11, 2022 11:34 AM (44ww/)

Yeah, that didn't ruin the movie for me, but it was a plot point that bothered me afterwards. Though my issue is less that the villains were "redeemed" in the end than that it was done by tinkering with their brains (or chemical imbalances, whatever), rather than the villains making a conscious choice to change their behavior. In the case of Osborn/Green Goblin, that does sort of make sense, given how he became a villain in the first place, but in the Raimi/Maguire Spider-Man movies, Doc Ock actually chose to not listen to the voices in his head and do something good for a change. Here, not so much.

I would have been fine with a redemption arc in the movie, but we didn't get a genuine redemption arc.

Even worse, he was upset about overpopulation in an infinite universe where people could travel in space and there were obviously tons of habitable planets. Overpopulation would be impossible in such a situation.

And, of course, if you reduce the universe's population by 1/2 today, won't it just automatically start re-populating? Won't those people have kids, etc.? what exactly would he have solved?

It was just an unacceptable motive and plan.

346 Batman the Animated series did an excellent job with Mr. Freeze and made you feel real sympathy for the man, Wife was dying, so he Froze her and trying to find a cure he was screwed over my the Company and caused him to be Mr. Freeze and he only is stealing to cure his wife.

Yeah and that was really well done. But here's the thing.

Mr Freeze was basically a blank slate before that, he was a nobody who showed up and tried to freeze Batman, without a personality or background. So giving him a story and making him interesting and somewhat sympathetic was good writing.

Doing that to EVERY bad guy, even ones already well developed, is dull and bad writing.

Magneto is another good example. He's a monster and a murdering psycho, but he has powerful motivations from his past and you can almost feel for the guy. He experienced the holocaust first hand and is desperate to make sure that never happens to "his people": the mutants. But... he's still a bad guy.

351 The problem is the redefining of evil as good and good as evil. It is classic moral relativism.

Designed to deny the basic truth of our reality. The truth of undeniable evil and incontrovertible good, both things raging as a battle within most people.

And it is also a denial of redemption. If good is bad and bad is good, there can be no redemption for anyone. And if there can be no redemption, then Christianity must necessarily be a lie.

Late to this thread. Conservatives need to be mindful of not turning every movie, commerical, ad, etc. into some subliminal message of leftism. The first time I saw this commercial I laughed out loud. it's an age old story, creepy man at bar leering at some chicks across the way, and they are tired of it. We should really guard against losing our send of humor, therefore becoming the right leaning version of leftists.

372 Goodfellas is usually the centerpiece of this kind of argument, and it's a great misunderstanding of Goodfellas.

I remember reading that the studio wanted to cut the scene about midway through the movie, where Pesci's character guns a teenager down during a card game because the kid gave him lip. Scorsese insisted that it be included, though, because after that point, he said, the audience could no longer pretend that these mobsters were anything but bad guys.

It definitely feels like a different movie after that.

375 365 Late to this thread. Conservatives need to be mindful of not turning every movie, commerical, ad, etc. into some subliminal message of leftism. The first time I saw this commercial I laughed out loud. it's an age old story, creepy man at bar leering at some chicks across the way, and they are tired of it. They don't have to get up and move , they just have Medusa slide her glassed down her nose and he's gone.
We should really guard against losing our send of humor, therefore becoming the right leaning version of leftists.

Well, except that the left is overt in their motives. I mean...there's reading into Huckleberry Finn about the feminist experience, and then there's watching a "grrl power" commercial where a woman gets to laugh off actual murder of a white man who looks at her in a way she doesn't like.

The left isn't hiding their motives for this sort of thing.

377 Don Corleone seems like a good guy (relatively) in the first movie, but the second movie shows how he was a very, very bad guy that became nicer once he was firmly established in power. The problem with his son is that he followed the same arc but was a psychopath with no normal human emotions, so he couldn't really become that good guy once safely in power.

390 Yeah, that didn't ruin the movie for me, but it was a plot point that bothered me afterwards.

Barnette might have past issues but he can't do a thorough vetting of every primary candidate in every race, he probably relies in large part on advisors to do much of the investigating and then he does some last bit of confirmation.

401 There are all sorts of villains/antagonists.

If you're creating a story, your villain needs to be real. They need to have their own logic that makes sense (at least to them), they need to have their own motivation, their own plans, they need to adapt when things fail for them too. You can make them sympathetic (someone who just wants something the hero also wants) or you can make them literal monsters.

But I think a steady diet of making villians admirable is unwise. It weakens the idea that there is absolute right and wrong in the universe. And also, most people want clear cut good guys and bad guys in stories. They crave it.

See also the Ukrainian war...

402 I think someone should ask Kathy Barnette about that BLM and "Defund the Police" tweet. I do know some AA's who were on board with BLM when they thought it was a legitimate organization, although they were never onboard with defund the police, but since BLM didn't do anything for actual Black people except for the leaders who got Big, Large mansions, they removed the signs from their yards. Maybe Barnett had an epiphany.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 11, 2022 11:55 AM (fF2aM)

403 351 The problem is the redefining of evil as good and good as evil.

Posted by: ... at May 11, 2022 11:50 AM (/+8fz)

Good thoughts all.

I think it is part of the general need to remove strictures. Western Morality is unique: an objective good, that is removed from the ends you are trying to accomplish. Your actions matter, no matter if you think you are good. This is a problem for the people in power.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at May 11, 2022 11:56 AM (dNqv+)

404 But stories are stories for a reason. The fight between good and evil is real, and seeing it personified will be useful and interesting as long as hearts beat.

I don't think so. Stories are quite often simply how the author wished things were, rather than how things are.

Stories personify good vs evil precisely because true good can be found fighting pure evil so rarely, if ever, in reality. And even if it could be found, a room of ten people wouldn't agree on who wears the white hat and who wears the black one.

Stories like that wish-cast. Just like the story we're seeing written right before our eyes regarding Ukraine. We absolutely need the "villain", Putin, reconstructed with some sympathy for the devil. And we need the hero, Zelenskyy, shown as being something less than the current script. Something quite a bit less, as a matter of fact.

I want to know how, in the original story, Perseus managed his sword by looking in his shield as a mirror. Everything would have been reversed. Did he practice before he actually went up against Medusa? And he must have had *amazing* self-control, not to look at her to see how close she was getting. Something tells me that either he had divine help (Apollo gave him that shield, right?), or Medusa was kinda slow and not very bright, to walk into his sword like that.

Now that's my kind of revisionism!

Smart politicians can make dumb endorsements too. Sometimes because they are being "too smart." I don't know if Oz falls into this. I certainly think Trump has a reason / strategy for the endorsement and it may make sense. But it may also backfire on him. Time will tell. I think Oz is flaky and not at all a conservative, but I don't think he is quite a Romney type - who is GOPe. The end result may be the same, but I suspect it will be slightly different - should Oz win.

Did he practice before he actually went up against Medusa? And he must have had *amazing* self-control, not to look at her to see how close she was getting. Something tells me that either he had divine help (Apollo gave him that shield, right?), or Medusa was kinda slow and not very bright, to walk into his sword like that.

Also the thought that it is their powers that made them evil. I always took the old comics to rest on the idea that there are good people and bad people. When people get powers, it does not change who they are, it merely lets them be who they are MORE.

That was the whole point of the first Captain America movie. He was given the power because he was good. Stark had his power just because he was smart. Others, just because they were born that way. But Captain America was different. That's why he became their leader.

I agree with that. I didn't understand it at the time. I gave up on the fake election around November 20th.

The false hope was dangerous and destructive yet I also think Trump thought it was important to keep making noise and not be cowed.

I'm also of the opinion that January 6th was planned even if Trump had been allowed to win. The Left was going to turn it into their own rallying cry against Trump's shock troops - with their own people taking casualties - and have investigations and hearings for four years. It was going to be the new Russia, intended to paralyze his second term.

I remember the anti-American-norm trend beginning with "American Beauty" -- where all that was right and good was really just a mask for rottenness beneath. That Howard Zinn type of perspective has really ruined the American psyche.

566 Greetings:

TV commercials are by far the most insidious form of propagandizing because they come at you in 10-15 second bursts, and leave their vision and message without any chance of response or examination.

They have been doing this for decades but now they have morphed from trying to control your wallet to trying to control what's left of your freedom.

567 Wow, this Barnette twitter thing is wild.

I still say twitter is a ridiculously confusing medium. I'd never have noticed the actual Barnette video if people here hadn't pointed it out.

568 530 >>My child received a ballot in the mail the other day here in Kali. He didn't register to vote, he got it because he got his Driver's license.

In 2020, my son got two ballots -- one for Jon and one for Johathan [sic]. The whole family got mail-ins, even though the wife & I voted in-person. We could've had multiple fraudulent votes in a family of five.

569 529 496 Trump should have never pushed for the Jan 6th rally. You could see the set up coming from a million miles away ---
I agree. When I heard there would be a rally on Jan 6 I wondered, "For what purpose?" It seemed obvious that there was very little up-side and huge down-side potential.

I understand this, but if we are to be a free society after an obviously corrupt national election why would this be a bad thing.
Sure we know the republic is lost.. but it shouldn't be, therefore a rally on Jan 6th shouldn't be a problem.

570 I remember the anti-American-norm trend beginning with "American Beauty" -- where all that was right and good was really just a mask for rottenness beneath.

There was a lot before that but yeah, it was a peak of anti-American disgust. Everything was awful and stupid and wrong and terrible, like Requiem for a Dream. I do not like soulless, hopeless movies like that. Unforgiven ALMOST goes there, its very close, but has some bigger themes.

571 In 2020, my son got two ballots -- one for Jon and one for Johathan [sic].

I doubt that was deliberately trying to gin up voter fraud so much as an excess of zeal trying to get everyone a ballot to avoid "voter suppression"

572 One recurring theme here is that female behavior anymore is appalling. It's not just randos in the media, I have maybe one example in my personal life that isn't a force for mindless destruction and chaos.

Also, if you have-or are going through a bitter, painful divorce (Don't know if you are) or know somebody who is, it tends to color one's view about the opposite sex in general-both for men and for women.

573 I'm sure I'm too late for anyone to see this, but the topic reminded me of Charlize Theron's portrayal of serial killer Aulien Warnos in Monster. Warnos at trial claimed that all the men she murdered were murdered in self-defense as they were in the process of raping her when she killed all of them. In the movie, I think the first one kind of "gets out of hand" so you could kind of see it, but the last man she kills was very gentle and begs for his life, half apologizing for patronizing a sex worker with, "please, my wife has Multiple Sclerosis and has no one else to care for her." This was the nail in the coffin confirming she earned the characterization, "Monster".

574 OTOH, movies have gone from SURPRISE, SURPRISE the government is behind it to no surprise at all that the government is behind it. From Parallax View to Shooter.

575 It's worse, Ric Grenell is now slicing and dicing a video taking Barnett's words out of context. She'll need to address this immediately by sharing the full clips. If Barnett is a phony, show us real (and unedited) evidence. We need to know. Otherwise, this is a disgusting smear against Barnett.

576 Here is the link of Grenell's recent posting highly edited video of Barnett - appears very deceptive: https://tinyurl.com/4s3f5pku

577 Meh. Fate/stay night did it better. Sure, it was a high school kid's novel turned into an eroge and then rebooted into a clean version of a franchise, but still. Rider is a cool big sister.

Plus, this is one reason why Japanese media > modern Disney under "Paycheck" Chapek: there is no shortage of villains (antagonists) who have tragic, misunderstood, and sometimes entirely sympathetic back stories in Japanese comics, animation, movies, TV, and games. Yet, it is very clear that their pasts do in no way justify their actions in the story itself. (And that's not even getting into clearly Villain Protagonists like Death Note where the main character is obviously a villain and not intended to be sympathised with)
But even going back to the source material of Greco-Roman mythology, the originals understood nuance better than Disney: Medea specifically comes to mind. She got screwed over royally, both figuratively and literally. Yet, it is very obvious that she clearly crossed the Moral Event Horizon (it's even on TV Tropes) into villain territory via her actions.

tl;dr Even the ancients Disney is ripping off understood human nature & the Moral Event Horizon better than Disney.
